Rugby Festival of Culture, supported by Rugby First and Rugby Borough Council, is back following the success of the first event in 2011. Taking place in Rugby Town Centre the Festival provides a fantastic platform for local musicians, dancers, comics, artists, writers, actors and singers to show case their talent and be part of what is already one of Rugby’s biggest and most popular events. In this guide you will find an exciting array of activities that are guaranteed to offer some great fun and entertainment for everyone – to get a quick overview of all that is happening visit the Festival Planner on page 32.

All the events within the guide have been organised by a variety of individuals, local businesses, groups, organisations and volunteers. Without their help the festival would just not happen. Rugby and Dunchurch welcome the Olympic Torch

On Monday 2nd July between 8:20am and 9:50am, the Olympic Torch will be running through the town and on to Dunchurch before leaving the West Midlands for the final time. The Torch is coming to the town to celebrate the links between Rugby School and the modern Olympic movement, specifically the time that the founder of the modern Olympic games, Baron Pierre du Coubertin, spent at the School. During this time he was inspired by the way the Headmaster of the time, Thomas Arnold, used sport and competition to enhance the learning environment of the pupils. TUESDAY JULY 3 Rugby Reads ‘Mugby Junction’

All change at Rugby Station, when Dickensian costumed characters, join commuters on Platform 2, to read aloud short stories from ‘Mugby Junction’, written by Charles Dickens in 1866. Elephant’s Graveyard

The SAMPAD Story

This year’s festival exhibition tells the story of SAMPAD (South Asian Arts) through visually stunning photographs. Sampad started its journey 20 years ago from humble beginnings working locally with artists, schools and communities and has been a key organisation in supporting the development of South Asian arts. Over the years Sampad has established a regional, national and international profile delivering many projects to support the continual development and dissemination of art forms in new contexts and for new audiences. The arts of South Asian origin are steeped in deep traditions, some of them nearly six thousand years old, and are the products of centuries of co-existence between different faiths, languages and ethnic groups.

Elephant’s Graveyard is the true tale of the tragic collision of a struggling circus and a tiny town in Tennessee, which resulted in the only known lynching of an elephant. Set in September of 1916, the play combines historical fact and legend, exploring the deep-seated craving for spectacle, violence and revenge. ‘Elephant’s Graveyard buzzes with truth about the consequences of misunderstanding, the invisible but enormous gap between artists and their audiences, and the infernal beauty of Vaudeville’. – The Stranger, Seattle

Eisteddfod Forget Gavin and Stacey and discover the true cultural character of Wales at Rugby School’s first ever Eisteddfod! What is it? A festival of music and literature. Medea

When the great hero Jason, along with his Argonauts stole the magical golden fleece, he was helped by the princess (and witch) Medea. Medea fell so greatly in love with him that she sacrificed her home and family, even murdering her brothers, to be with him. This tragic play begins several years later after Jason and Medea have been living together in Greece with their two children. Jason has just left Medea in order to marry a beautiful Greek princess. The play tells the story of Medea’s passionate love and despair and the lengths she goes to wreak revenge on the people who have hurt her. It really does show that ‘Hell has no fury like a woman scorned’. This production will be in English although there will be some ‘Greek twists’ as homage to the original. Medea is one of the most performed tragedies on the modern stage. Its terrible ending is exaggerated (one hopes) but its themes of love and betrayal are universal.

The Railway Children The gentle Edwardian lifestyle is about to be turned upside down for Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis... Back, by ever more insistent demand, is Rugby School’s very own version of: ‘WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY?’ - a quite brilliantly hilarious hour of improvised sketches devised by Helen Lawson and performed by our willing victims - er - actors, for your delectation. CMS Choral Festival

With just a needle and thread talk The Royal School of Needlework was founded in 1872 and has been teaching the techniques of hand embroidery to the highest standards ever since. Its Studio has also been involved in prestigious commissions from coronation robes to the wedding dress of the Duchess of Cambridge for Sarah Burton last year. This fully illustrated talk by the RSN’s Chief Executive, Dr Susan Kay-Williams will feature commissions, pieces for major public events and work by students past and present, and shows what can be achieved with just a needle and thread. It will follow on from an exhibition of work by RSN students based in Rugby which will be held at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum, Floor One in June. You do not have to be a stitcher to enjoy this stimulating and eye-opening lecture.

In association with Samuel French Ltd In this stage adaptation of the hugely popular TV series by Jimmy Perry and David Croft, Paul Carpenter and Ian Gower revisit the 1950s and Maplin’s Holiday Camp with its host of colourful characters. It’s the start of a new season and founder Joe Maplin announces that he is setting up a camp in the Bahamas. He needs female Yellowcoats to go and work out there and the annual ‘Miss Yellowcoat’ competition will decide who is to go. Rivalry between the girls is fierce, with Sylvia and Gladys joint forerunners to win the coveted yellow sash. Camp cleaner Peggy, meanwhile, is thrilled at the prospect of a vacancy for a new Yellowcoat and convinces Entertainments Manager Jeffrey that she is the ideal candidate for the job. Ted is forced to employ numerous moneymaking schemes when his ex-wife turns up at the camp with a bailiff in tow, and Yvonne and Barry Stuart-Hargreaves send the rumour mill into overdrive when they overhear Gladys escorting Jeffrey into his chalet late one evening. Tuesday 26 June to Saturday 7 July Warwickshire Open Studios offers a wonderful opportunity for artists and makers to exhibit and sell their work directly to the public through a trail of artists studios and exhibitions across Warwickshire. Come along to Floor One Gallery to see a selection of work by artists based in the Rugby area who are taking part in this years Warwickshire Open Studios. Warwickshire Artists’ Annual Exhibition

Saturday 30 June to Saturday 14 July Warwickshire Artists’ annual exhibition as part of the 2012 ‘Warwickshire Open Studios’ event. 15 professional artists are showing a variety of contemporary and traditional artwork, including drawing, painting, glass art, textiles, prints, photography and sculpture. Oxfam Bookfest and silent auction

Monday 2 to Sunday 15 July During bookfest a silent auction will be held for two weeks. Items include valuable books, LP’s, homeware and anything which is valuable.

‘Rugby Reads’ Dickens Relay for Myton Hospice

Monday 2 to Saturday 14 July An appeal to the population of Rugby to book in for ‘laps’ of 15 minutes each, to read aloud (wherever they are at that time) from Dickens’ novels or short stories, and collect sponsorship or donations to support Rugby Myton Hospice in its ‘Myton at Home’ appeal. We’d like someone in Rugby to be reading aloud from 8am till 8pm every day of the Festival. Registration and sponsorship forms are available at Hunt’s bookshop, and can be left there or posted to St Andrew’s Church or anyone can leave their name and contact details on 07500 484756 or email info@ucltd.co.uk or go in through the Festival website. An appeal for volunteers to help read ‘Nicholas Nickleby’ aloud from 10am – 3pm, each day of the festival (monday to friday) in the garden of St Andrew’s Church (or inside in bad weather!) Don’t miss the schools’ presentations of their reading at the Clock Tower on 12.30–1pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday of both Festival weeks
