Summer is a great time to be outside. But when the rain comes or the temperatures become too hot for outdoor activity, summer provides you with a chance to relax and develop your mind instead.

Not sure what you can do to increase your mental fitness this summer? Here are a few life-giving choices you might not have considered: ♦

Summer is the season to be physically active in the outdoors. Beach volleyball, running, and playing in the park are popular activities that get your heart pumping and your body moving. But slowing down once in a while is important, too. A picnic with friends, for example, can provide stimulating conversation that keeps your mind sharp and active while giving your body the rest that it needs to thrive. The key is to balance activity for your body with relaxation and mental stimulation. Spending time with others allows you to learn more about them and connect with them on a deeper level than you ever thought possible. Seek opportunities to share your summer with your friends and extended family members. If you do, you'll continually improve physically and mentally. You'll also develop deeper and more meaningful relationships with the people you care about most.

Turn fitness into a lifestyle

Walk Your Way To Fitness! Fitness experts now recommend walking at least 10,000 steps per day.

You know that your health is important, and that daily exercise can cut your risk of disease while dramatically increasing your energy. But how do you fit a workout into your busy schedule? Are you too tired after a hard day of work to take advantage of a gym membership? Thankfully, it's possible to stay fit without missing a beat of your busy lifestyle. Who needs expensive, cumbersome exercise equipment or the daily commute to the gym, when you can get valuable, heart pumping exercise almost anywhere?

5 | Fire Up Your Fitness | Week Four

To bring greater fitness into your life, try these easy tips around your home or workplace. 1. Take a walk. Walking is one of the most accessible forms of exercise. You can incorporate more steps into your day by simply walking around the block during lunchtime or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Even if you exercise regularly at a gym, walking can supplement your routine for more energy and a leaner body. ✦ Consider purchasing a pedometer that counts your steps.

Wear it all day, and write down the number of steps you've taken at the end of the day. Each week, set a daily goal of steps and increase that goal each week. You'll be surprised how your mind finds ways to get more steps into your daily routine. ✦ If getting instant feedback motivates you, wearing a pedometer will drive you to burn

more calories. 2. Drink lots of water and eat nutritiously. Drink as much water as possible to keep your body well hydrated and functioning at peak efficiency. ~Think of the food you put into your body as fuel for your life, and choose to fuel your body with highenergy foods that keep you fit. ✦ Eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables

as possible. Fill your dinner plate with vegetables and a smaller portion of meat and carbohydrates. Eat fruits for an energy-producing alternative to candy bars or other sugary snacks.

3. Exercise for at least 10 minutes per day. You can exercise anywhere, without using special equipment. ✦ Examples of exercises you can do without a gym membership or expensive equipment are push-ups, skipping rope, stretches, and crunches. In as little as 10 minutes a day, you'll notice a huge difference in how you look and feel.

4. Get plenty of rest. The amount of rest each person needs varies. The important thing is that you make it a priority to get to bed early enough that your body gets adequate rest. If you feel groggy every morning, consider going to bed earlier or finding a way to get in a short 15 to 30 minute power nap during the afternoon. When you put these tips into practice, starting today, you'll experience a greater sense of vitality and self-confidence. With these simple techniques, the only thing that stands between you and the new fit you is action!

Fun Ways to Burn Calories & Shape Up!

Do you avoid exercise because you feel it is time consuming and boring? If so, it's easy to see why you make excuses to get out of having to face it. The problem is, the more you avoid exercise, the more sedentary your lifestyle becomes, and the more you may face health challenges instead. It doesn't have to be this way! You probably remember having lots of good times when you were younger that involved quite a bit of strenuous activity. At the time, you didn't even realize that you were doing something healthy for your body because you were having so much fun. Instead of forcing yourself into boring exercise routines, you can recapture some of those good feelings of your youth by seeking out activities that help you burn calories and shape up while having fun.

Shoop! Shoop! Hula Hoop. You can work out whatever sets of muscles you want with a hula hoop. They now make special hoops that are balanced with weights for different parts of your body. Before you know it, you'll be toned and in shape and you'll have had fun in the process. 7 | Fire Up Your Fitness | Week Four

These old school activities are often more fun than just walking around town. However, if you're the type to enjoy a good walk, that'll certainly benefit you as well. Other wise, try these ideas for fun ways to get in shape:

Fire up your fitness! Jump Rope. Jumping rope has many health benefits. It also gets invigorating very quickly. You may find that you've burned 100 calories in only 10 minutes while jumping rope.

Dance. Even if you think you don't know how to dance, or have no natural rhythm, dancing can be a lot of fun. You can sign up for a class or just get crazy in your own home. Let yourself loose and you'll find that you're burning calories in no time.

Go for a ride. Go for a ride outside and enjoy the scenery. The trick to this technique is that you won't be using a car. Ride a bike, rollerblade, or try skateboarding.

Swim. While this activity might not be available to you year round, it's good for you to take the opportunity to do it when you can. Swimming is excellent exercise, and you can get creative so you never have the same swim twice. Yes, getting in shape can be a lot of fun. As long as you're moving, you're exercising and burning up calories. Use these exercise tips as a springboard for your imagination and you'll never run out of ideas for a fun way to exercise again!

refuel your mind, body & spirit Practice breathing exercises. As often as possible, focus on your breathing. Learning to relax and slow down your breathing will do wonders for your physical and mental health. You'll handle stress better and meet the challenges of your life with more effective responses when you learn to relax under pressure by focusing on your breathing. âœŚ You can focus on your breathing anywhere. When you're stuck at a red light, use the time to relax, instead of getting frustrated at the delay. In between activities or duties at work, take a breathing break. And, when you start to feel stressed, take just a few seconds to breathe deeply and refocus on solutions.

Just breathe!

TRY THIS: Close your eyes (if you're not driving, of course), and slowly inhale

through your nose. Then exhale slowly through your mouth, pause, and repeat a few times. Place your hand on your stomach, covering your belly button. If you're breathing correctly, your hand will slowly rise and fall.
