on the cover As a designer, I’m often asked by clients to make their homes more functional and family-friendly. A great place to start is by finding ways to add extra storage to the home. Mudrooms and small entry nooks are a perfect solution. In the case of this entry, I wanted to curate a space for my clients to have extra seasonal storage as well as a practical everyday place to grab daily items. We turned an old mirrored coat closet into an inviting and functional nook, carrying the home’s craftsman style and casual feel into the cabinetry with shaker style doors that hide shelves for bins of hats and gloves. We added a fresh and durable fabric cushion to the bench to make it feel homey and relaxed. The pop of art above is a welcome change from the typical hooks full of coats. It’s a practical and clutter-free first impression in this home.

Instead of moping about that carpet of snow, concentrate on that green carpet of grass that will soon cover your lawn. Now’s the perfect time to plan a makeover for your outdoor living space. Carpeting, a new deck, outdoor kitchen, and sculpted landscaping can really improve the look of your outdoor paradise.

Lighting

One of the simplest ways to spice up the patio is with lighting. You can string hanging lights or place separate fixtures in open spaces. Outdoor solar lights convert sunlight into electricity, and they’re easy to install and maintain. Solar lights won’t increase your electricity costs. They illuminate gardens, landscapes, lampposts, entryways, and pathways.
Container Gardens Flowers, vegetables, and shrubbery brighten up front and backyard landscaping. Short on space? Try container gardening. Design the garden with hot and pastel colors. For example, petunias grow in all shades—pinks, purples, reds, yellows, whites, and stripes. Cardinal flowers are bright red. Zinnias bloom in single- or double-flowered stems. Hang a few containers on your porch or attach a couple of wicker baskets to an outdoor wall filled with annuals and greenery. Native plants adapt to the climate as they repel pests and disease.

OUTDOOR LIVING: SPRING UPDATE
Seating and Decorating Dump those old broken lawn chairs. You can find bargains this time of year at your favorite home improvement store. Chaise lounges, rocking chairs, and swings are comfortable for backyard decks, patios, and front-facing porches. Color things up with standout hues—how about peacock blue or flamingo pink? Buy some new cushions or re-cover the old ones. Drop a runner or two on the picnic table. Dress up the deck with an outdoor carpet and large urns. Hammocks are a great way to relax on a lazy summer day.

These wooden outdoor structures dress up walkways, decks, and patios with their filtered shade. Sizes vary, but many options are available. Some types have attachable panels or canopies to block the sun. Build a pergola over the deck or patio and place hanging flowerpots on the rails. Grow vines and ivy over crossbeams and lattice.

It’s like getting the best of both worlds: a kitchen on the patio! You’ll no longer have to run back inside during those cookouts. Talk to a contractor about space and structural requirements. One thing to consider: The temperature and humidity inside the house differ from the outside, so your cooking experience will vary.

Outdoor living has gotten high tech. Smartphone apps control lighting, heaters, security, and even the barbecue. “Alexa, turn on the grill!” With these upgrades, you’ll now have another “living room” to entertain guests.
Hidden Storage Because you never seem to have enough room to store things, utilizing every spare inch is a plus! Build an accessible cabinet or pullout drawer underneath a raised deck to hold barbecue tools, mosquito repellants, and lawn toys. Benches with lift-up seats make great storage places, too.

Q
Nothing transforms a space quite like a fresh coat of paint. What is your go-to color(s) for creating a refreshed look and feel within a room?
A
I can’t say that I have go-to paint colors simply because choosing the right paint color is specific to each space based on fixed elements of the room (such as countertops in a kitchen or bathroom), the light that the room receives, and the fabrics and furnishings going into the space. For a fresh neutral that goes with just about everything, however, I love a pale greige like Benjamin Moore Classic Gray and Sherwin-Williams Shoji White. Although they aren’t quite as versatile as a neutral choice would be, I am totally in love with SherwinWilliams Naval, Benjamin Moore Glass Slipper, and Benjamin Moore Guacamole. I’ve used each of these colors on either cabinetry or trim, and it’s such a fabulous look!

It’s probably more accurate to say that I incorporate seasonal textures into my home, but all within the context of the existing color scheme. For example, I love to drape a sumptuous cashmere or wool throw over the arm of my sofa the moment the first frost hits. For spring, I’ll swap out my gray mohair pillows for pale-pink linen.
I also rarely use “traditional” colors in my holiday décor. Last year, I used various shades of pinks, ranging from blush to a deep berry. One great way to pull your holiday color scheme throughout your home is to buy lots of ribbon in one of your colors and tie it on a frontdoor wreath, onto the backs of dining room chairs, and around lamp bases. You can also bring one or more of your colors to your holiday table by layering colorful chargers under plain white plates or your regular china.

When it comes to rooms that are highly lived in and loved on by all ages, how do you approach the design differently?
A
The first order of business when creating a space the whole family can enjoy is to balance style with durability by choosing beautiful fabrics that will stand up to the challenge of daily life. Look for performance upholstery fabrics; they’re the Holy Grail for homes with children and pets. Thankfully, over the last few years, manufacturers have come out with a bevy of colors and styles that look and feel amazing, so there are plenty of great options to choose from. Incorporating areas for different activities in to the living room’s layout is a great way to ensure family members of all ages will gather there. A seating area encourages conversation, a chair with a side table and a lamp will invite curling up with a book, and a quartet of chairs surrounding a small table is perfect for enjoying a snack and playing games. One thing I don’t do any differently in spaces for active families than I would in any other space is to add beautiful artwork, original or otherwise. There’s just something about art on the walls that makes a room feel more personal and complete.

Everything gets a bit lighter as we transition from winter to spring. Fewer layers, lighter fabrics. Do you have any favorite fabrics and textures to introduce in the spring?
A
A perfect way to lighten up your home for spring involves one of my favorite tricks for cozying up your home in winter. I love to layer wool rugs over seagrass rugs in the cooler months to add a little extra softness and warmth underfoot. Then come spring, remove the wool rugs to unveil the natural texture and cool feel of the seagrass rugs. It’s a simple action that transforms the entire room. I also love to swap out heavier quilts and accent pillows in cozy fabrics on the beds for ones made from lightweight, cooling fabrics that feel fresh and breezy. There’s nothing better than laying your head on a crisp cotton or linen pillowcase. Of course, spring in my home always means more fresh flowers than ever (I’ve never met a peony I didn’t like). Put them in every room for a home that looks and smells like a springtime garden.

Q
Just as seasonal blooms give life to exterior landscapes, artwork gives life to interiors. What advice can you offer someone looking to do a complete art overhaul in their home?
A
That sounds like a fun undertaking! While I recommend always keeping an eye out for new pieces you’ll love, I think most art lovers remain sentimental about their favorites. I have certain pieces I know I’ll keep forever. I’d say the first thing to do would be to take an inventory of any existing pieces you own. Which ones do you still love? Are there any you love but that could use a frame update? That’s a great way to freshen up pieces you aren’t quite ready to part with, but that don’t fully work with the look and feel you’re going for in your space. Then take an inventory of the wall space you have available. Make careful notes about the height and width of each space. I even recommend snapping a photo so you can quickly recall what’s in that area of the room when you’re shopping. In terms of where to find great art, you might want to start by looking online or at local galleries. If original pieces are what you’re after, follow and search #originalart on Instagram. You’re bound to find artists, if not specific pieces, you’ll love. From there, you can contact the artist directly to commission a piece, or discover which galleries represent them. If you’re looking for reproductions, there are a lot of good manufacturers, but I particularly love Wendover Art Group’s collections (they sell to the trades only so you’ll need to get in touch with a designer or other dealer to purchase pieces).

From a functional standpoint, what is the secret to making the most out of built-in bookcases and shelving?
A
I think there are three keys to using built-ins and other open shelving as functional storage that looks beautiful: 1.

Clutter is neither beautiful nor functional. No matter how neatly you try to arrange everything, too much of anything never says “well-designed.” A cohesive color story really matters here. We’ve all seen shelves with books of every color in the rainbow, and it usually looks chaotic. The same is true for dishes. If you have items in a wide array of colors, that can absolutely work. Simply group similar colors together and, if possible, separate the different color groups on different shelves. Or create delineation on the same shelf with separate stacks. For nondecorative items you want close at hand (kids’ art supplies, media remotes, etc.), employ beautiful covered storage boxes and baskets that fit neatly on your shelves.
Q
We adore ALL of your kids’ room designs. For a space that’s bound to get messy, how do you combat the chaos through design? Favorite fabrics and textures to introduce in the spring?
A
First of all, I’m not a minimalist in my design style, but I am with respect to just about everything else, including kids’ toys and clothing. Simply put, the less you have, the less there is to mess up! That said, I do try to incorporate simple, beautiful organizing solutions into my own home and the spaces I design for my clients. For example, covered bins or baskets work great for kiddos to quickly stow toys away at the end of a play session, as well as for collecting loose items like shoes and sports equipment in foyers and mudrooms. Kitchen: Great cabinet design is vital. There’s nothing less functional than a kitchen that doesn’t have storage configured to suit what you have and what you use regularly. Small appliances often clutter the countertops simply due to the lack of easy-to-reach storage. Living Room: Having sufficient seating to accommodate everyone in your home, and providing each seat with a place to put a drink and a book, makes a world of difference in how you’ll use and enjoy your living room. Bathroom: Including a linen closet (or large cabinet) in the bathroom itself is a must. It’s never fun to realize midshower that you forgot to grab a towel—and that the linen closet is down the hall! No room for that? Maybe there’s a spot for an extra towel bar or hook! Office: Every office needs certain items to be functional, and we traditionally rely on our desk drawers to stow many of those items. But if space is at a premium, opt for a smaller desk with no drawers instead and add a console or credenza with larger cabinets for your closed storage. That way, you can hide away bulky items like the printer and router as well as the little items that would have gone in your drawers, like a stapler, tape dispenser, envelopes, etc.

My husband often finds it necessary to declare himself a minimalist. In so doing, he is contrasting himself against my, apparent, maximalism. I don’t self-describe as a maximalist. I do love the layers of life and character that populate the faded chintz curtains and upholstery of English country houses. I do want to display all the gorgeous art books I own. I am driven to find the needle in the estate sale haystack. And I absolutely want to go to the red apartment Billy Baldwin created for Diana Vreeland just to breathe it all in over cocktails. Dare I even mention Tony Duquette? Or Doris Duke’s Shangri La? OK, OK. Perhaps I have a penchant for more. For the sake of a happy marriage and a spring refresh, I have agreed to explore the art of minimalism. After all, I love the simplicity and beauty of Japanese ceramics. I love a Zen hotel as much as the next person. I admire how one can live a spare industrial artist loft. How hard could it be? As I look out over my stacks of art and design books held up by a variety of bookends and my carefully curated collection of African cowbells that offset the Memphis-inspired candle sticks with their towering candles, where do I start? We start as we always do, of course, with a list. Here are my top ways for a maximalist to explore the art of minimalism.

Clean Slate For this exercise to work, we need to start with a clean slate. Let’s say you want to refresh your dining room. As much as possible, empty the room of all unnecessary accessories, décor, and furniture. Keep only what is absolutely required for the room to function. For a typical dining room, that would be your table and chairs. If you want to go a step further, consider if you can abandon your chairs and opt for floor cushions and a low table. Once you’ve determined how you want to dine, then you may invite some of your other pieces back to the party. However, before we go from stark to stacked, consider the value added by an item versus the amount of space it takes up. Bring back as little as possible. Be strict. I think you can have an elegant dining room by just bringing in three more things. On my list , those three things would be a modernist console table, an antique candelabra, and a plant or vase for flowers. Done.

Start with an Investment Piece Our firm always mixes furniture and accessories from vendors high and low. Working like this allows clients to invest as they can, but still be able to live in their homes and be comfortable. Following our minimalist doctrine, let your investment piece be the star of the room. It does not want to share the spotlight with clutter and distraction. Give space for your special item to be special. If it is a credenza, for example, keep the surface clear of dĂŠcor and accessories and allow it to float freely on a wall without overcrowding it with other furniture. This will draw your eye as well as help the special something be center stage in your room. Drama.

Shop Your Own Collection Rather than purchasing something new and acquiring more stuff, consider refreshing your living room by redecorating it using items you already have—perhaps you can swap lamps and throw pillows from another space to mix it up a little. Try putting one of your bedside table lamps in your living room, and move that floor lamp into that dark corner of your bedroom! Bring the art from your dining room into the entryway. Roll up those rugs and move them around! This exercise will also help you to see your items differently. After the relocation, you may have some leftover pieces that don’t work anymore. If you don’t love them, donate them. Release.

Tighten Up Consider how many dishes or glasses or towels you have versus how many people live in your home. How many of these items can your family use in a given day? How many sets of sheets can you use on your bed at once? Rather than having four sets of sheets when you really only love one of them, donate those that are no longer your favorites, and treat yourself to another set of the best! That way, you are always sleeping your best sleep, and there is less clutter in your linen closet. For me, this provides a good reason to invest in a brand I love rather than have second-rate bedding. I am also more likely to make my bed if I want to show off those gorgeous sheets! Clean and fresh.
Eliminate the Negative Even as maximalists, we can understand how too many pillows may not be the best use of our sofa space. Rather than storing all the things you can’t currently use, consider donating them. Keep only the items you must use or that you feel you aren’t ready to release. Clinging on to things you don’t need will hold you back. Having less stuff allows you to consider the architecture and lines of your home.

Flipping through the pages of design and dĂŠcor magazines today is an excellent source of inspiration for homeowners and dreamers alike. The featured rooms are big and bright, with tons of natural light and an airy feel. Some of the appeal comes from wonderful architecture, high ceilings, and large-scale windows. The rest comes

from strategic planning and a sleek designer touch. We are often asked to create a sense of greater space for our clients, and short of a renovation, there are easier ways to achieve that. Here are some of our tried-and-true tricks for making a home feel larger, brighter, and more open.

Probably the simplest shortcut to creating a bigger and brighter home is to declutter it. Granted, this won’t actually get you any more square footage, but you’ll be amazed at your newfound perceived sense of space. We suggest to minimize and remove items from tabletops and countertops. Minimally adorned shelves and surfaces will help accentuate your home’s architecture, furniture, and artwork by not competing for your attention. This trick is more about achieving a visual sense of space, and it works every time! If you’re renovating your home and have carte blanche (within reason, of course), now would be a very convenient time to build “visual space” right into the design from the ground up. Starting with your floors, opt for a flooring product, dimensions, and design that elongate the space in your mind’s eye. Think “long and lean,” like grainy hardwood floors and rectangular tiles. The way flooring is installed also has a huge visual impact on your space. Parallel or diagonal flooring is commonly known to achieve the illusion of space. Be sure to continue the same flooring material and pattern through connecting rooms to create a greater sense of continuity. Wall color is another easy way to create the illusion of more overall space in your home. Lighter colors can make your walls visually recede, while deeper shades tend to bring them forward and create coziness. To bring a greater sense of light and air into your home, choose a neutral color palette consisting of white, beige, or light gray. This is because neutral colors reflect more light and make a room feel larger. Avoid dark paint or overly bold wallpaper, which can
make a room (particularly a small one!) feel even more cramped and cluttered than it may already be. Paint the room and all adjoining areas in the same hue to create continuity and blur the breaks from one living area to the next. Along the same lines, keep contrasts to a minimum. A monochromatic color palette from the ground up will achieve an overall cohesive, seamless look.

CREATING THE ILLUSION OF SPACE
While we’re talking walls, have you taken stock of your windows yet? Windows are worth their weight in gold, in my professional opinion, flooding a room with tons of natural light, fresh air, and lively, vibrant views. Maximize the natural light in your home to make the space look and feel larger. Replace your heavy window drapes with simple white sheers, which offer the benefit of privacy without impeding the flow of sunlight. If privacy is not an issue, omit the window coverings altogether for a more modern, minimal look.
Tip: Window covering expert Specialty House Manufacturing recommends hanging your window coverings as close to the ceiling as possible to make the ceiling feel higher than it is and make the window appear larger. When you’re finally ready to furnish the space, remember that especially in a small home, less is more. And always consider the scale of a new piece of furniture in relation to the room and other items in it. A small home that’s outfitted with sleek, streamlined furniture will look more spacious and be more functional. Opt for pieces featuring clean lines, clear glass, and reflective materials, which hold less visual weight than solid pieces do. As you arrange your furniture, steer clear of doorways (for functional and aesthetic reasons), and ensure you keep trafficked areas clear. Finally, and importantly, leave sight lines open to ensure you maintain that great sense of openness. Whenever you shop for an item for your home, ask yourself if it can do double duty. Always opt for pieces that can serve more than one function. Multipurpose pieces are a great way to declutter your space and spend less money on items you don’t really need. Modern designers and manufacturers have mastered the art of storage and space savings, with beautiful pieces that surprise and delight. Many furniture stores offer smallerscale items, but there are condo-specific stores out there that specialize in small-space essentials such as d-leaf kitchen tables, storage ottomans, wall desks, compact chairs, and nesting tables. Furnishings with exposed legs or feet are another trick of the trade. There’s something about the air flowing freely around and underneath these pieces that gives them a lighter appearance. Invest in leggy couches, ottomans, and chairs as well as bed frames, dressers, and other furniture that catches the eye. The final and perhaps most overlooked way to enhance a home’s sense of space is with accessories. No home is complete without these finishing touches, and believe it or not, some strategic pieces can actually make your home appear larger. Mirrors are an essential piece in every home, but I especially love using them in compact spaces. Their aesthetic impact is incredible, and the best part—it’s instant! This interior design tip works for all sizes of rooms and can work almost anywhere in your home, regardless of the size of the mirror. Bathrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms—anything goes. Think beyond the walls when using mirrors. Play with mirrored finishes and reflective surfaces in your living room, entryway, bedroom, or kitchen décor to add depth and brightness to the space. Lighting is commonly found in reflective finishes like polished chrome and, more recently, trending gold, but don’t stop there. Virtually anything can be found in a reflective finish, such as high-

sheen fabrics, art and photo frames, vases, mirrored side tables; the list goes on. Hint: Placing reflective pieces near windows will subtly bounce more light around the room. The old saying “size is just a number” is only true to a certain degree when it comes to your home’s square footage. Realistically, there’s only so much “visual space” you can get. There are many creative ways to make a small space appear larger, but the true secret to making the most of your home is to use every inch wisely. This doesn’t mean cramming every corner and surface. It means standing back and incorporating empty “white space” into the overall aesthetic. You’d be surprised at how liberating an empty corner or countertop can be. The most beautiful homes aren’t necessarily the biggest ones. Be smart and selective with what you choose to bring into your home. Think light, open, and airy. Simplify. By freeing up visual space in your home, you’ll soon find yourself living larger than you ever thought possible—regardless of your home’s physical restraints.

As a designer, my objective is to help tell the homeowner’s story through a carefully curated collection of furnishings, art, accessories, and an overall aesthetic that speaks to them. Truth be told, I love antique hunting for my interior projects, and when my clients have their own hand-me-down pieces that they’d like incorporated into the design, even better. There are so many benefits to including older furnishings as part of a new design. First of all, it’s more cost efficient, with some fabulous items either already within your possession or available for purchase at a hefty discount. Repurposing existing furniture is not only greener for your wallet but is also better for the environment—and as we all know, environmentally friendly living starts at home. Last but not least, as you purge your home of unwanted clutter, you’ll notice an elevated aesthetic to properly showcase those pieces that you really love—regardless if they’re old or new.
The “mix-and-match” trend Older furnishings can lend your space a look that is particularly hot right now—it’s cool and contemporary, yet warm with retro character. A lot of this comes by way of the beloved dents, scratches, and time you’ll find covering antiques from top to toe. Aside from those, you’ll also find handcrafted quality, time-honored traditions, and a good story or two. By highlighting a few thoughtfully selected, vintage objects, your space will have a “collected” and very deliberate look that’s evocative of an art gallery.
The big purge Step one to a successful “old-meets-new” interior is to really evaluate every piece you currently have in your space. Start by asking yourself: Do I need it? Do I have room for it? And do I love it? If you answered “yes” to all three of these questions, then it can stay. Items that are damaged or broken belong on the curb. Most cities have great recycling programs for curbside pick-up. Furnishings, accessories,

small appliances, clothes, and toys that are gently used but no longer loved or needed should go into a “donate” pile. More and more charities and nonprofit organizations are popping up, eager to accept these still-good items for a good cause— and they will even come to collect them from your front door. If you’re even the slightest bit tech-savvy, you can always sell your used items online. As they say, one’s trash is another’s treasure and there’s no shortage of people out there who can take your old items off your hands. Online is a great place to purchase these items as well, but more on that later! Now that you’ve emptied out the space you’ll be redesigning, you’ll have to fill it up again! Now, before you lose your head (and your wallet), remember that in this case, less is more. The objective here is a highly curated aesthetic, so ensure the few items you choose to showcase make the right statement in your space.
The art of “up-cycling” You likely have some solidly built furniture items you can’t quite part with. Perhaps they look dowdy and dated. But really look at them, and you’ll surely find something you love. The quality construction, the unique lines, the comfort. This is where “up-cycling” offers a great option. As designers, my team and I have been doing this much more frequently, and we’re glad to see this trend picking up speed. It’s easy to repurpose old dining chairs, sofas, armchairs, tables, and even lighting by refinishing them. A fresh coat of paint in a trendy color or adding a new fabric can instantly update and bring a tired piece back to life. No one will even suspect that it was ever—dare I say it— once destined for the curb.
Antique hunting So what if you haven’t inherited any cherished antiques? It might surprise you, but there are high-end and affordable finds right at your doorstep. These unicorns do exist and they are called “consignment stores.” Vintage décor is popular now, and good pieces are easy to find at places like consignment shops, estate sales, and flea markets. These secondhand furniture hot spots are filled with high-end, beautifully made gems that tell a story. An added bonus is that the quality of some older furnishing can be vastly superior to some pieces that are being manufactured today, proving that they sure don’t make ‘em like they used to!

Once you find your furniture, accessory, or light fixture, mix it up by selecting some newer, more contemporary items to blend into the space. When creating an “old-meets-new” look at home, remember the design rule of repetition: a single modern element will look out of place in a sea of antiques. Be sure to balance these different styles with an equal ratio of pieces. Up-cycling is a great way to achieve that perfect balance of old and new, with a truly one-of-a-kind, custom piece you’ll never find in any shop.
With the furniture side of things covered, the last area to focus on is the accessories. I love to incorporate old, vintage finds from unexpected places. They become like buried treasures, tucked away on shelves, bookcases, and side tables. I prefer this to any mass-produced piece found in a big-box store. Scour antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales for some real beauties and bargains—it’s worth the effort. Not only will you be doing your part for the planet by minimizing your carbon footprint, but you’ll also be bringing lots of character and interest into the interior space.

Think “vertical” as a great way to showcase those interesting, vintage decorations and collections. Using a wall to store and showcase your pieces will help liven up the room without creating tabletop clutter or occupying valuable square footage. Dedicated wall storage means you’ll finally have a home for all those unconventional and perhaps unused items that still tell a good story. Consider enhancing your display cases with dimmable integrated lighting. This will highlight your collections and turn them into a focal point in the room while adding illumination and ambience to the overall space.
Think outside the box When it comes to your used pieces, think strategically. Not everything is destined for the trash. Consider finding new uses for old objects. This is a fun way to challenge your creative side. Simple projects, like converting an old suitcase or trunk into a trendy side table or turning a sewing machine table into a vanity, can be an interesting approach to up-cycling that becomes a talking point for visitors and perhaps creates something cherished enough to be handed down. By repurposing pieces you already own, you’ll keep objects you’d otherwise never use out of the basement and better yet, out of the dumpster. This old-meets-new, mix-and-match approach to interiors is much loved, and popular among homeowners and the design industry alike for many reasons. My team and I have certainly made a concerted effort to change our approach to our profession. Old and new can work together in perfect harmony, and they must for us to do our part for the planet. Reusing, recycling, and upcycling takes some know-how, forethought, and a keen eye for style. Working with an unbiased professional designer can help you objectively weed out the trash from the treasure and identify the items that are truly worth keeping.

When you walk into a home, flooring may not be the first thing you see, but in beautiful design, it most certainly plays a role in the overall flow and functionality of a home. In our exclusive video interview with Kate Davidson of Kate + Co. Design Inc., Davidson shares the importance of flooring in interior design and the key functions it plays. For entryways, Davidson recommends tile for its durability and resistance to water. Depending on the entryway, there are different styles of tile that can be used to complement the design of the home.
