How to design a stylish outdoor living space

SUMMER 2020

on the cover “This kitchen is really the heart of the home in more ways than one. It’s the first room you see as you walk in and it’s open to both the living room and dining room. It’s the central hub for all family meals, entertaining, weekend hangouts, and so much more. You can be sitting at the island catching up on some work, lounging in the living room watching the game, or doing some homework on the dining room table all while maintaining a conversation with the cook. The double island means one can be used as a prep surface while the other remains clear, which is so useful for entertaining but also for when your family just wants to be with you while doing their own thing.” (continued on page 88) - Eugenia Triandos and Korina Khamis, Hibou Design & Co

WELCOME “Home should be an anchor, a port in a storm, a refuge, a happy place in which to dwell, a place where we are loved and where we can love.” - Marvin J. Ashton Over the last few months, it goes without saying that home has been the common theme for millions of people across the globe. As we embark upon a summer that inevitably feels different than summers of years past, our focus on home has not swayed. And with this focus, we’ve taken the opportunity to hone in on family-focused design, being home, and creating spaces to enjoy with the ones we love. Step into the talented minds of award-winning designers to explore Pet-Friendly Design, tour a Fun & Functional basement renovation, go behind the design of an active family’s Emerald Isle-Inspired Home, and discover 9 Tips for Creating a FamilyFriendly Home. Inspiration and Insight from Professional Designers With pets of their own at home, these five interior designers are well-versed in the art of designing a petfriendly home. From flooring and furniture to paint finishes and feeding stations, they’re sharing their best design tips for creating a beautiful home that’s suited for four-legged family members.

Beautiful Design Made Simple | 19

“ INTERIOR INSPIRATION

“Flooring is a primary consideration when cohabiting with pets. Most

important is the point of entry. Whether it is a back door, front door or

garage door, flooring needs to be impervious. We like natural stone, but

there are many affordable options today, from ceramic to porcelain tiles. On the main floor, hard-surface floors are most desirable. We like using wire-

brushed hardwood floors because they hide potential scratching from the nails but overall wear well and are very forgiving.”

20

Images courtesy of Phyllis Lui

“Choose low-pile, tightly-woven carpet and area rugs, and avoid white or very

light colors to minimize staining potential. You’ll also want to avoid any dark colors if your pet has light hair. Always look to add area rugs to cover flooring in key

areas. Area rugs keep furry friends happy and comfortable, but make sure to have a pattern to help hide any accidents. Consider the habits of your pets. Where

do they most like to go to sleep or spend time? Perhaps your pet is a window

watcher, like our pooch. We look to find places he can safely sit without breaking

items or ruining the backs of furniture. Tight back design of chairs and couches is a much safer option for them if you allow this activity.”

“ INTERIOR INSPIRATION

“As an official dog lover with two of my own, I can attest that selecting the right

fabrics and finishes in your home is important. Velvets and chenilles attract and tend to hold on to hair and fur. Opt for smoother fabrics. Investing in fabrics with finishes like Crypton or Sunbrella Indoor/Outdoor are fantastic options

for furniture. Consider the color of your pet when designing. Select colors that

won’t emphasize your four-legged friends’ fur between cleanings. Small patterns or variations in color are perfect for this too. For walls, the best paint finish is

eggshell. It still has a relatively low sheen but high scrubbability, which will keep your walls looking fresher longer.”

“When designing a foyer or mudroom, I always try to select finishes that are

durable and eco-friendly. This is most important when you have a furry family member who comes in with muddy paws. An entry area that has storage for

leashes, toys, and food is a bonus when you have a pet. Customize your cabinets to organize your and your pets’ necessities to make for a functional space. Hooks for easy storage, low cabinets to hold big food bags, and a nook for dog dishes are some ideas. Keeping the food bowls in the mudroom is the perfect spot to

keep them tucked away and makes for an easy cleanup.”

“If you are doing a reno like a kitchen, mudroom, or laundry room, don’t forget to integrate items for your pet. Build in or plan to add a food and water bowl station that uses leftover materials or complementary materials either into your island, or hide it in a toe-kick drawer.”

“When looking for soft upholstery with pets in mind consider using slip covers

over your key furniture pieces. Fabrics naturally just always attract the pet hair and leathers are keen to quickly get damaged and scratched. Looking for something

that is washable is a great idea to have in your home when you have four-legged friends. At our home, we have slipcovered armchairs and have slipcovered

our bed frame, and I love that I can throw it in the washing machine whenever needed. Slipcovers work far beyond that cottage chic look and now are used

often in contemporary settings to provide a clean, contemporary vibe when used with the right fabric selections.”

n u F e h t g n i t Put IN FUNCTIONAL

Written by Joann Kandrac and Kelly Kole Design by Kandrac & Kole Interior Design Photography by Lauren Rubinstein

Beautiful Design Made Simple | 27

FUN MEETS FUNCTION

When it came to designing the basement of this Atlanta residence, designers at Kandrac & Kole Interior Design were tasked with creating a casual space that was tasteful and beautiful but not too fussy. Plus, it had to be comfortable and practical for family time and tons of hustle and bustle. Meet the clients: Mom and Dad are doctors who just relocated to Atlanta. Their two young daughters are quite different—one is quiet and loves books and music, and the other is rambunctious and creative. Mom wanted a space for family TV watching and creative time with bright, fun colors and a girly flair. Dad wanted a space where he could play pool and hang out with his buddies. He wanted “his side” to resemble his favorite restaurant, which has a distinct “wine cellar” feel. The design team was challenged to meet the entire family’s needs in this space. With everyone’s tastes and personalities to think about, the Kandrac & Kole team set out to meet these needs while making the space flow seamlessly because they were connected! The design team started with the family TV area as they laid out their plan for this cohesive space, where comfort and functionality played into every decision they made.

“We started the space plan on the TV side with an oversized, deep (for cuddling) sofa in a performance fabric. The coffee table was fabricated with performance fabric as well so everybody could have their feet up. The green side tables were family pieces from the ‘70s and were very sentimental, so we had them lacquered in a fun green. The round mirror is from Phillips Collection and is made with open paint cans—a nod to the kids’ art stations.”

28

A creative place for two young girls was next on the list. The design team wanted to give each child a place to create, study, and find their own inspiration.

“The kids’ craft stations were the biggest hit. Ikea desks with great storage, good lighting with USB charging in the lamps, and oversized linen bulletin boards to display artwork made for great functionality. The Matisse quote on the wall was custom-painted by local artist/designer Kristen Fountain Davis. Adding to the functionality of the space was the modular rug, which consists of durable commercial-grade carpet tiles in a variety of colors.”

Beautiful Design Made Simple | 29

FUN MEETS FUNCTION

Last but not least was Dad’s space. Smoothly transitioning from craft station to pool table and bar was no easy feat. Common flooring—a luxury vinyl plank in a rich wood tone—helped connect the entire space. While Dad’s space had fewer bright colors and more rustic accents, the spaces worked together to represent the entire family.

“The great design element in the pool area is the Stikwood wall—authentic reclaimed wood that is adhered to the walls, giving us that instant wine cellar feel. We then added statement lighting, and custom art depicting wine cellars as well as an American flag made out of bottle caps [not shown].”

This functional space also served the family as an additional kitchen for storage and food prep for all the fun times to be had there.

SPENDING TIME WITH FAMILY AND PETS, MAKING MEMORIES, AND PLAYING SPORTS BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE IS COMMON IN ALMOST ANY HOUSEHOLD. WITH A VARIETY OF GAMES, PUZZLES, AND ADVENTURES TO EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR FAMILY, THERE’S AN ENDLESS AMOUNT OF FUN TO BE HAD IN YOUR HOME. CRAFT NIGHTS COMPLETE WITH GLITTER AND SEQUINS, HOMEMADE SLIME PARTIES, AND EVEN GAME NIGHTS ARE OFTEN SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENINGS IN OUR SPACES. We may often ask ourselves the question, “How can I hold on to this moment forever?” The best way to answer that may vary from person to person, but one thing is for sure—by concentrating on what matters most, focusing on the relationships we create and the time we spend with loved ones, we’ll be working toward keeping those favored memories close. As we give added attention to what’s most important to us, we invite you to take time to think about how you and your family use your home, and also think about what ways your flooring plays a part. Stunning, intriguing visuals in a home design often take priority over other features like durability, resilience, and lasting strength. While good looks will always be crucial, so will the features of the flooring you choose, especially over time. With pets, kids, and a variety of different activities that occur in your home, we think it’s time to shift your focus to flooring that dazzles with its enduring stability, strength, and, as an added bonus—beauty.

DESIGNER Q&A

Q

Adding color can be a daunting task for those designing their own spaces. How do you go about adding color without making a room feel overpowering?

A

Color is one of the trickiest elements in any space, home, or design. With endless options in a variety of hues, tones, and textures, striking the right balance of color and intensity is the most integral element to any space. If done correctly, you can have a space beautifully accented through the use of color! First and foremost, find the balance. Where will your color be introduced? Typically, we suggest accents: furniture, rugs, pillows, art, and accessories. These are “noncommittal” items that will allow your space to transform through the seasons, trends, and years with you. This means that keeping a neutral palette in your base finishes, such as your floors, walls, and ceilings, will allow for the perfect base and canvas. So why not a white? Also, assessing your light is integral. Whether washed mostly with natural or artificial lighting, light will allow you the opportunity to assess how colors will be perceived. Where ample flooding of natural light fills your space, you have leverage in also going bolder! Next, know your palette. It’s important to choose your tiers and tones and stick with them. Your base items and largest pieces should always reflect your base/grounding color. They don’t necessarily need to be in your darkest color, but rather they should provide the springboard for your accents to shine while also ensuring you stick within the same family of either warm or cool tones. Next, work your way up the tier. Begin to select your accent colors; limit them to two or three colors (typically), and then most importantly, repeat them. Repeating accent colors from the detail in a pillow to an object or coffee book cover to the frame of a piece of art will help to create not only repetition but also balance, and bring significance to the color(s) introduction into the space. In cases where you may be feeling most adventurous and want to introduce more than just a “few” colors, maintaining them in the same intensity, vibrancy, and family will allow the same principle of continuity and balance. Imagine the pictured space with a variety of colors, but all within the same primary family of colors in the replicated intensity, striking a bold but balanced visual feast.

40

Q

What are some tips you can give to make those who are fearful of color feel better about bringing color to the overall design?

A

Color is one of the first things people see when they enter a room. It can be on the walls, furniture, or accessories in your room. It creates an instant mood, style, and atmosphere within the room while enhancing the architectural and design elements. Though color can be tricky, and yes, downright daunting for many, don’t let it overpower you or your space. Take baby steps. We like to say the easiest and cheapest way to explore working with color is through the introduction of some accent pillows. This may translate to a throw blanket, perhaps a more colorful piece of artwork, and then a rug. But the larger the item, the less intense it should be, and vice versa (depending on the impact you want for your space). This will allow for some “rest and repeat” throughout the space, giving breath to colors while also limiting the “fearful aspect.” Especially if color is only introduced into the accent pieces in your home, they can be more easily replaced over the seasons and years while also presenting less of a financial risk or investment.

Q

What pieces of décor do you find are the best to add color to a space? Blankets, pillows, rugs, artwork, curtains, accent furniture?

A

We use, love, and work with blankets, pillows, rugs, artwork, curtains, and accent furniture to bring color into any space. Ensure you base your color selections not on trends but on personal taste and preference. Don’t force yourself into a color simply because it’s been deemed “Color of the Year.” Surely we cannot help but find ourselves in these predicaments when we’re in the hands of retailers and suppliers who manufacture these goods for us, but base the purchase (whether on trend or not) on the emotion the color evokes for you and your space. Color has been studied for centuries for a reason. Colors can emote and transmit certain emotions, reactions, feelings, and ambiances. So have color work for you, not against you. Consider your space, too. If you have darker or bolder walls, you may want to consider lighter and brighter accents to incorporate for contrast. Alternatively, if you maintain a light, bright, and airy foundation to your space, you may be seeking contrast on the other end of the spectrum, so look to deeper and bolder hues. Again, seek items easily accessible and that you can transform in later months or years.

Beautiful Design Made Simple | 41

DESIGNER Q&A

Q

For homes with several family members, how do you choose a color/colors that everyone will love?

A

Start on common ground. Neutral colors and tones will serve everyone’s desires well. This could be taupe, gray, white, brown, etc. Once this common ground has been established, it then becomes easier to find objects, accents, and items within that base color that also introduce another accent color within. For example, this family home is mostly neutral in palette in the walls, flooring, and sectional. Let’s say, for instance, the palette ranges in a variety of light to dark grays. By finding rugs or pillows that have grounding in one of these gray tones, but then quietly introducing another accent color—such as a navy blue, perhaps in the border of a pillow or pattern of the rug—you’ve “broken the ice,” so to speak. Using this as the springboard to introduce a variety of blue accents within this family home will be much easier, such as a few complementary blue vases, candles, or paintings, allowing everyone to see eye to eye! In addition, we find blues, reds, and greens to be the simplest way to find an accent in “common ground,” and they are commonly quite accessible when it comes to shopping for the right accents.

Q

What is your favorite way to start adding color to a room? Do you like to choose a piece of furniture with a fun print, or do you opt for neutrals and then add small pieces into the design?

A

Finding inspiration for using color in a space can come from many things: a beautiful silk gown, a painting, or another piece of art you love. This can serve as your jumping-off point and provide you with the foundation necessary to build your room of color. Being inspired starts your journey into creating a beautiful and well-thought-out room. Sometimes, we cannot deny the heart, and we find the perfect accent chair or fabulous rug in the ideal color or pattern for the space, then use it as inspiration for the rest of the colors to follow. Although in most cases, we would be ideally limiting our largest pieces in the home to a neutral tone and color, then seeking our focal. In most, spaces this would be perhaps a wall covering or piece of art that is vertical, visual, and dominant in the space. Once we’ve found that fabulous covering or art, we can begin to pull tones, textures, and colors from this piece or pieces to be emulated in other areas and elements of the space.

42

Q

What advice can you give on choosing colors that will stay timeless in a newly decorated space?

A

So, where do you start? Color has been proven to have psychological effects on people, so as you dive into the pool of paint swatches, ask yourself how some of your top color choices make you feel and how you want to feel in your space. The same room can have a completely changed ambiance in a new hue. For example, cool colors such as blues and greens evoke feelings of tranquility, reliability, and calmness. On the other hand, colors on the warm side of the spectrum tend to act as stimulants. Reds, oranges, and yellows are known to elicit feelings of excitement, warmth, and playfulness. Consider this when making your color choices. Keep in mind that color resonates with different people in different ways. The short answer to the color quandary is this: it’s all about personal preference. If you love it, then it’s right. We believe if you stay true to you, you can never go out of style. One of the most common hurdles we face in our profession as interior designers is our clients’ sheer fear of color. Honestly, we’ve heard it all: “It’s too bold”; “It’s too trendy”; “It’s too colorful.” To all those excuses we say, “You’re not afraid of color. You’re just afraid of the wrong color.” Common mistakes we see in people’s homes are that they’ve purchased everything in the home adhering to that time period or the Color of the Year, which will quickly go out of style and not provide the longevity most desired. So whether there’s a little or a significant amount of color in the home, if you’ve maintained your personality and your style, your space will always reflect you and not the times. Though, like trends or seasons, we can certainly change or adapt our personal style over the years; therefore, also using color in a balanced and thoughtful approach, again such as in smaller or limited pieces in your home, will allow you the opportunity to more easily transform your space in the future. Also, following our initial suggestion, a neutral or white palette in your space and on your walls will leave your space feeling bright, timeless, and always in style.

Beautiful Design Made Simple | 43

DESIGNER Q&A

Q

When it comes to designing a home that has colorful inspiration, how do you unite the design throughout rooms within a home?

A

One of the most important factors of introducing color into any home is the use of repetition. Introducing it heavily into one space and then not another—or at all—will leave your home feeling unbalanced and appearing noncommittal. If you’re going to take something, we like to say, “Take it, run with it, and make a statement!” But find ways to introduce that color and tone respectfully into areas, adhering to their purpose and use. For instance, you may want to make a splash for impact in a foyer or powder room because these areas are more transient and allow the opportunity to take a larger risk in a smaller space. In contrast, for a bedroom, you may want to take a lighter hand and approach the introduction of color in more limited areas in a softer tone or hue of the same color.

Q

One of our favorite things about the summer is how the sunshine can truly bring brightness to a room with longer, sunnier days. Do you have any advice on how to achieve the same goal in every season?

A

Again, maintaining an overall brighter and neutral tone for your base finishes, such as your floors and walls, will ensure you have a home feeling more like summer year-round. This allows you to take advantage of even the slightest rays of light we may receive over the fall or winter months by reflecting them off brighter walls. Drab and dark walls simply absorb those rays. While accounting for color, don’t forget about artificial light. Finding the right temperature of light and replicating it throughout the room in floor lamps, table lamps, and overhead lighting will create a cohesive and bright space that emulates those summer months.

We like to opt for 3,000K temperature in our lights, which refracts into a perfect bright white that is not too yellow or blue, creating the perfect atmosphere, and most importantly, accurately reflecting the colors in the home.

Is there any way to ensure a foolproof color choice in a space when adding multiple design features? Should different shades be chosen, or is it okay to add several colors in one space?

A

The world is truly your oyster, so whether using one or one hundred colors, it’s a matter of ensuring you stay true to yourself and your space. If working with just one color, simply introduce it into the space with a variety of tones and shades to create layers and avoid the look of a “one-trick pony.” If multiple colors are introduced, try to adhere to the same intensity of hue throughout those colors in the same shade so that you begin to complement all of the colors in the space, rather than presenting a discordant variety of shades and hues. Advancing colors such as red, orange, and bright yellow will make a room seem smaller and more intimate. Blue, green, and violet are cool and soothing. In the right settings, colors can be mixed, coordinated, combined, and juxtaposed to create a contrast that pleases the eye and stimulates the senses.

Q

We want to help create spaces that flow. Are there any huge design flaws with color that should be avoided from the very beginning?

A

Be careful with accent walls, which can limit your space opportunities. Instead, opt for a wall covering that can still bring color into the space but with more interest through pattern and texture, and which will also act as art for your walls.

Q

We love a space with tons of windows, light, and color. Is there any way to mimic this look in a home with fewer windows or doors, where there’s not as much opportunity for light to shine through the home?

A

The easiest way to ensure you don’t go too far with a bold, colorful look where the space is smaller and dimmer is to maintain a neutral base. Light floors and white walls will always help balance the colors in the space. Then consider introducing the right levels of light into the space through ample artificial lighting, such as overhead fixtures, floor lamps, and table lamps, in the same color and temperature of light. This will also ensure the space remains bright and that you perceive the accent colors in the space cohesively. Also, limit yourself to the items you introduce with color. In a larger and brighter space with ample windows, we may be able to be more adventurous with brightly colored accent furniture pieces; but in a smaller and darker space, you may want to consider these brighter colors in the rug, pillows, artwork, and even the shade of a lamp.

Q

Are there ways to make a room feel more colorful without adding on to the texture of the space?

A

Focusing on solid color introductions in your accents helps to reduce visual noise and texture in the space. Keep to accents without patterns or stick to color-blocked accents. A solid throw adds an accent, but a mix of two or three colored pillows in a complementary color will help to maintain a space limited of texture while bringing in some color. BEHIND THE DESIGN

Inspired by the colors, sounds, and feelings of the Emerald Isle, there is no shortage of beauty and grace in this truly elegant design. By bringing together a sophisticated color palette that makes everyone feel warm and cozy and a focus on family, this home design is one that shouldn’t be missed. We’re excited to share the full reveal of our clients’ worldly and collected residence. Over the past several weeks, we’ve been detailing the interior design of this familyfriendly home, inspired by the colors of Ireland. This new-construction home transports you to another place, a place where nature takes the spotlight. Working with the team at Scott Frasier Homes, our design marries our clients’ cultural roots with their love of travel and sports. Old World elements give the design a distinctly European feel while singular interior design details lend personal touches.

Our Interior Design Concept The beauty of the Irish coast comes to life through the home’s bold color palette and thoughtful accessories. Inspired by sapphire and emerald jewel tones against an artisan touch of reclaimed wood, we created warmth and Old World ambiance by carrying dark wood throughout the home in a variety of ways.

48 | Beautiful Design Made Simple

the Foyer From the carved front door to dark hardwood floors and wrought iron accents, the foyer brings the home’s Mediterranean style from the exterior to the warm indoors. The chandelier greets you as you enter the foyer, while wrought iron branches delicately adorned with a single crystal celebrate the beauty of nature in a modern way. This chandelier is like a piece of art! 49

the Dining Room Since the dining room is one of the first spaces you see in the home, we wanted it to feel distinct but visually connected to the foyer. We worked to refinish the dining table in a new stain, Brazilnut from Sherwin Williams, which is a perfect match to the charming floors. Above the table hangs a chandelier that adds visual interest and delicate beauty to the space.

50 | Beautiful Design Made Simple

The curved back and bramble finish on the legs of the chairs mimics the architectural style of the front door. We selected a velvet Schumacher fabric for the side chairs and a Sahco fabric with a lovely pattern for the head chairs. Holland & Sherry drapery fabric in Mediterranean makes a bold statement in this sophisticated dining room.

51

the Family Room We wanted the design of the family room to be an inviting space the family could use for entertaining, gathering, and play. The bench-made sectional is unique, and the espresso ebony stain on the inset wood base mimics the door stain to achieve a unified look. We chose a highperformance Crypton fabric in a chocolate shade that can go the distance with any type of play, no matter the age of the kids, while pillows upholstered in Seema Krish fabric and a lounge chair layer the design with rich color. What’s unique about the bench behind the sectional is that it’s actually made from the family’s existing breakfast table! We had it disassembled and fabricated as a simple bench. Versatile and conversation-starting, the Columbus Trunk Console suits the home’s worldly, collected style.

52 | Beautiful Design Made Simple

the Breakfast Area The open space between the kitchen and the family room serves as the breakfast area. Upholstered chairs in an opposing shape add structural detail and balance to the design. Bespoke cookbook shelves in navy and beautiful wood grain shelves unify the kitchen and family room spaces.

the Kitchen In the kitchen, subtle hints of gray in the tile soften the contrast of the sapphire blue cabinets and sleek white counters. The addition of a rug adds character and cushioning underfoot. The stools carry the stain on the exposed wood beams in the kitchen to the fireplace mantle in the family room.

53

BEHIND THE DESIGN

the Master Bedroom Blue and white have a powerful, calming effect in the master retreat. The beautiful hand-tufted area rug reminds us of waves crashing against the sea cliffs along the Irish coast. We love the uniqueness the outturned legs on the bed add to the cohesive design. We selected a Joseph Noble window drapery and a Holly Hunt drapery trim with a great hand and texture, and the drapery allows ample amounts of natural light in.

54

the Pub There is a secret space in this home—the pub! The tucked away location of this special hideaway meant we could design a space that truly feels like an Irish pub. Rough-hewn brick, distressed leather, and herringbone hardwood floors feel rustic and cozy. Hues of espresso, navy, and emerald create a masculine, moody atmosphere. The space also boasts a home theater with a wide-screen projector and a pool table, but this room is more than a media room. There’s a large bar with bar stools and a pair of Irish green leather chairs intended to give the family a central gathering spot. This room is decked out with everything they need!

Beautiful Design Made Simple | 55

the Boys’ Rooms THE CHARMING ROOM Designed for the oldest of the four boys, this bedroom is refined and sophisticated. A large desk offers plenty of space to do homework, and a comfy leather recliner is the perfect spot for reading. The pairing of slate gray with lighter grays gives the room a moody, tranquil atmosphere.

THE BRIGHT AND YOUTHFUL ROOM Soft blue and hunter green lend an energetic ambiance to this room. Graphic pillows, plush toys, and an eye-catching wall design are youthful and fun. We selected larger, high-quality furniture that can easily be transitioned as he grows up and will be appropriate for years to come.

THE TEXTURED FUN ROOM In this room, bold blues and orange punch up the design. Graphic wall decals paired with glossy white furniture convey the sports theme without feeling too cliché. Reclaimed wood floating shelves imbue beautiful texture into the room’s otherwise sleek design.

THE ADVENTURE ROOM A large map wall mural gives this room a global perspective and brings a sense of fun and adventure to the design. Industrial touches and classic plaid bedding marry Old World charm with sleek modernity. The result is a bedroom that’s both youthful and mature.

I hope you loved the full reveal of this sophisticated interior design project! The home’s classic architectural style and modern functionality give the family plenty of space to gather, play, and entertain.

WHY THE ALL-WHITE TREND IS HERE TO STAY Contrary to popular belief, white is anything but basic. White can be expressive, energizing, and exciting. White can make a space feel bigger and brighter than its actual square footage, and in my professional designer experience, these are two characteristics that everyone covets for their own home. Particularly in small spaces but applicable in every home, any chance to create a greater sense of space and light is a golden opportunity. This is why the white-based color palette has been a long-standing trend, and it’s here to stay. This is also great news because it happens to be one of my favorite color choices, despite the fact that it’s not technically a color at all. From living rooms to kitchens and bathrooms, across a vast range of styles and style preferences, here are a few reasons to consider this trend in your home. As with all interior trends, there’s a right way and a wrong way to go all white. Believe it or not, many people are intimidated by the thought of going all white. It’s the whole idea of the “blank slate.” Where do you start? Rather than fearing it, tackle those white walls as you would a blank canvas—seek inspiration from what brings you joy, and you can’t go wrong. Whether you look to nature (think earthy, organic, tactile experiences); technology (clean, sleek, and slim); or something in a completely different realm, you can translate its essence in white.

59

WHITER & BRIGHTER

THE WIDE APPEAL OF WHITE White’s neutral nature gives it wide appeal. Other colors have the potential to evoke strong feelings—and the risk of offending. Don’t get me wrong; I love designing with color, but especially when designing a space for someone else, you’d better be sure to reconfirm the color choices before putting the brush to the walls. By contrast, for someone who may be hesitant to commit to a bold color palette or when differing preferences are in the same home, white is typically an easy win that still makes a big impact.

AGELESS BEAUTY

Trends turn with the seasons—and trust me, when a color choice or tile style is “last season,” it can be glaring. The fact is that some design choices can instantly date your home. The bolder you go with the trend, the higher the likelihood you’ll want to update it sooner rather than later. White has no expiration date. You could say it has the gift of eternal youth. It is the ultimate in neutral design options. It’s easy to update with new accessories, patterns, and metallic finishes to bring it back to life. This is a quick and inexpensive fix when your home feels like it’s suffering from a “style slump.” The timeless appeal of white bodes well for your wallet, especially when it comes to expensive or difficult-to-replace items such as floors, tiles, cabinets, countertops, and big-ticket furniture items. Now, there’s a right way and a wrong way to work with white. Here are some tips to keep in mind before you crack open the paint can.

CARTE BLANCHE

50 SHADES OF WHITE

Some people might feel intimidated by the vastness of an all-white room, but this happens to be the very reason I love working with white. It’s a blank slate that lets a home’s natural focal point shine. Start by painting everything white, and see what pops. It could be the home’s unique architecture, its natural light, or its views. What the eye is drawn to without the distraction of a kaleidoscopic color palette is amazing!

Speaking of color, before you choose “white” and move on to your next design decision, know that white comes in hundreds of different hues. In fact, every color in the rainbow can tint white, resulting in literally thousands of variations. Pure white, China white, antique white, bone white . . . when compared side by side, it’s easy to see just how different they all are.

Beautiful Design Made Simple | 63

WHITER & BRIGHTER

LAYER YOUR WHITES Layering different tones and shades of white within a space can be a great strategy to warm up your palette and bring depth to the overall design. Just be sure your whites complement one another. Remember to pay attention to the natural lighting in the space because this will change the overall perceived brightness of the white. Beyond color, be sure to bring different textures into the mix. Textures can be as effective as color when it comes to bringing variety and interest to a room. I often combine different materials such as wood and natural stone, fabric, leather, plastic, and metal to bring color to a white space without using any color at all. Another consideration is sheen—using matte, eggshell, or high-gloss surfaces is a subtle way to showcase different elements within your space. Imagine a white dining room with a high-gloss white dining table taking center stage. Topped with a shimmering chandelier and a mirror overlooking, this allwhite dining space is quite a dish. I advise my clients not to shrink away from white upholstery. Of course, those who share a space with young children or pets might not consider white to be the most practical choice. That said, modern fabrics come in a range of washable and fiber-guard options that look great, are practical, and will stand the test of time—and sticky fingers.

64 | Beautiful Design Made Simple

WHITE IS A WONDERFUL PALETTE TO USE IN AN OPEN-CONCEPT SPACE, LIKE THIS ONE. THE OPEN-CONCEPT FLOOR PLAN IS GENERALLY COUPLED WITH A CLEAN, MODERN AESTHETIC. HERE, THE WHITE WALLS, CABINETS, AND BUILT-IN BOOKCASES BALANCE THE ACTION TYPICAL OF A KITCHEN AND ADJOINING FAMILY ROOM, INSTANTLY BRINGING CALM TO THE CHAOS.

I believe white interiors have the unique ability to lighten the mood. Maybe that’s why I love working with this palette. I believe part of white’s appeal comes from our deeper urge to simplify life. Declutter your home, and why not do away with those heavy colors and cumbersome trends while you’re at it? You’ll be surprised at how much simpler life seems when your home actually lets you breathe.

POWDER ROOM PROJECT

When thinking about the design for your guest bathroom or powder room, approach it as a chance to do something exciting! Use more color than normal, go bold with moody-dark paint, or spice it up with a funky pattern. This is your chance to add dramatic visual interest to a space in your home that will have a lot of eyes on it. Whether you want to redesign the whole area or just make a few relatively inexpensive updates, we’re ready to help you create a room worthy of oohs and aahs.

daltoncarpetone

Making a Statement Let’s start with a few good moves on the design front, regardless of what your budget may be. A great way to make a statement is with a feature wall behind the sink. Whether you’re working with restricted funds or taking “the sky’s the limit” approach, either an interesting tile or a fun, patterned wallpaper (or both) is a great option. Tile styles can range from a colored subway to jaw-dropping water-jet marble mosaics. There are even great tile options that are color-neutral but will add visual interest by adding texture to the space. Wallpaper is available in a plethora of amazing colors, textures, and patterns. You could alternatively add trim details like ship-lap or board and batten, which can be fairly inexpensive but look like a million dollars. Whatever option you choose, a feature wall is the way to make a statement in your guest bath.

Faucets & Fixtures Another way to change the look of your guest bath is to update your faucet and light fixtures. You’ll want to make the switch of these together so you can match or coordinate the metals and colors of these products. If you decide to keep your current countertop, be sure to choose a faucet with the same number of holes as your previous one or one with an escutcheon plate to cover holes you aren’t using. When it comes to selecting new light fixtures, consider a fixture that not only provides an adequate amount of light but also coordinates with the lines of your plumbing fixture while making its own unique statement. There are an endless number of options to consider—from a basket weave or beaded pendant light to updated, modern sconces. Go with fixtures that inspire you!

Transforming your Vanity Other small adjustments that carry a big impact include tweaking the hardware, and painting your vanity cabinet. For cabinet hardware, so many amazing options are available: interesting metal finishes, glitzy or elegant acrylic, clear or crystal-like knobs and pulls, leather straps, or even industrial-inspired options that look like pipes. Changing your hardware is like putting on the perfect set of statement earrings to complete your outfit. Putting a fresh coat of paint on your cabinets can have as big of an impact as installing a brand-new vanity. This is an area where you can play with a bold color—sage or hunter green or even the Pantone color of the year: Classic Blue.

Painting for Impact Want to make a big impression without totally overhauling your current design? Try painting the ceiling and trim. This is a lower-budget option that lets you make a big impact by changing the feel and design of your guest bath. This is especially a great option if you like your classic white vanity or are keen on keeping the natural wood or stain you have on your current vanity. When selecting a color for the trim and ceiling, we say go bold! This is something you can easily paint over if you ever want to switch it up again. Coordinate with the colors you like in your shower curtain, wallpaper, décor, or flooring. All you need now is a bucket of paint and a paintbrush (and some painter’s tape . . . you’ll definitely need some painter’s tape).

daltoncarpetone

Consider New Flooring If you have more time on your hands and a larger budget, you may want to update your floors with a new tile. If you’re going bolder on patterns in other elements of your design such as the wallpaper selection, you may want to opt for a simpler patterned or textured tile. You can still spice up your flooring by having this more simplistic tile laid in an interesting way, such as in a herringbone pattern. You can use your grout color selection to highlight the pattern you choose as well. If you went with a quieter color palette for your vanity and walls, this is a great opportunity to go bold with your tile floors. We’re thinking refreshing cement tiles with a multitude of fun and funky patterns or even an interesting geometric in a bold color—like a teal hexagon. Whatever option or design you’re leaning toward, new tile floors will give your new bathroom a clean, updated touch.

Whatever your budget may be and no matter which of these design recommendations you go with, your guests will love the space you put together. Your home is a reflection of your style and personality, which will shine through any changes you make to your guest bath or powder room. Now have fun getting those creative thoughts flowing!

Tips for 9 74

family- friendly

INTERIOR DESIGN BY HIBOU DESIGN & CO. PHOTOGRAPHY BY DREW HADLEY

Beautiful Design Made Simple | 75

DESIGN TIPS

Get Organized with Increased Storage Keeping your home organized by investing in storage baskets, “catch-all” spaces, and areas where you can place miscellaneous items is one way to create the perfect familyfriendly haven where everything has a place. Furniture with hidden storage, such as beds with built-in drawers or ottomans that lift to reveal space inside, are excellent touches to make your home both beautiful and organized.

1

Entryway rooms that feature space for shoes, keys, and mail will allow you to set your things down where they belong, and as an added bonus, you’ll always be able to find them! Think about what you need when you come and go from your home. Choose multifaceted decor pieces that provide you with both a feeling of happiness when you see them, as well as the space you need for your things.

Think About Inclusive Elements Making your house feel more like a home by adding inclusive elements that truly make it feel warm and inviting for any child, adult, or family member is an excellent way to establish a family-friendly design. Shift your perspective from raw design to a vision that includes the things that make you happy. Kids’ artwork set out for display in a charming frame is one way to provide family-friendly touches that make your space feel like home for everyone. Plus, the whole family will be proud when they see their accomplishments set out for all to see!

76

2

3 Opt for an Open Concept An open-concept home is one of the top trends for constructing a design that works for any family. With sight lines from the kitchen through the dining and living room, you can keep an eye on your little ones and have conversations, all while continuing to work on the task at hand. You’ll also benefit from the unified design that can be achieved in these spaces, all the natural light that flows through on a sunny day, and the ability to create a warm, inviting focal point in your home.

Open-concept layouts offer the flexibility and adaptability of a space that truly works with any activity, whether it’s kid- or adult-focused! They are tasteful, versatile, and sophisticated—an ideal way to get a family-friendly look and feel.

Beautiful Design Made Simple | 77

DESIGN TIPS

Invest in Family-forward Flooring Flooring is an essential piece of the puzzle to any functional home design. For the highest-performing family-friendly spaces, consider luxury vinyl for the main areas, soft, stain-resistant carpet for kids’ rooms and playrooms, and avoid light-colored area rugs that show dirt and debris. The hard surface of luxury vinyl offers a charming look to your space, while the durability and stainresistance of the floor offer you the practicality you need in a home with children. Plus, it doesn’t just perform well in a home with kids; it also adds elegance and refined flair to your home design, whether you’re looking to create a contemporary oasis or a modern farmhouse.

78 78

Soft, stain-resistant carpet in both children’s bedrooms and playrooms brings warmth, comfort, and safety. Babies and toddlers will be able to explore the world by feeling the fibers of carpet between their little fingers, while older children will find that the carpet flooring is the perfect spot to lie down and read a new book. Area rugs that feature primarily bright white, light yellow, or soft gray hues should be avoided, if possible. They are simply ideal for areas where dust, dirt, and stains are common, which is why heavily patterned rugs with deeper colors are a much better alternative.

4

Add Intentional Space

5

With kids, you never know when an activity is going to break out. By leaving some space to rearrange the furniture on movie night, game night, or for a midday dance party, you’ll be ready to turn your home into the perfect spot for any familyfriendly occasion.

6

Use furniture that’s the right size for your room to ensure you have the right amount of space. Oversized couches quickly make a room look smaller than it is and usually leave less square footage for coffee tables or other accessories. Crowding the room with tons of seating when it will only be used occasionally can also become a hassle. Instead, choose multi-functional furniture or storage that doubles as seating, such as storage stools or window seats.

Keep it Comfortable Whether you prefer soft, cozy blankets, extra decorative pillows, or comfortable seating, make your home into a space you never want to leave. Kids and adults alike will love the added warmth, and when you’re spending time making memories, you won’t have to worry about moving to another room to find a more comfortable spot to sit. Dining room chairs are available in tons of designs and styles, so consider the chairs that feature increased cushion and comfort. After all, you never know when your game night will go on for hours at the dining room table! Similarly, your accent chair shouldn’t just be a pretty piece, but also one that your family members enjoy using during movie night!

Find Fun Décor and Designs

7

Just like the spontaneous fun you have with your children, it’s just as important to have fun with your home design. Textured wallpaper, a unique backsplash, or a herringbone tile pattern will bring visual interest to your design without hijacking the overall concept. Statement pieces like bright artwork or fashion-forward décor can be changed easily as your design style evolves, and these fun statements will add even more depth to the cohesive look of your space. They may even become your favorite conversation starters!

79

DESIGN TIPS

Embrace Easy-Care Surfaces For both kids and adults, spills and accidents are bound to happen. Whether it’s a sippy cup of milk on the floor or red wine on the counter, there’s no telling when or where a mishap will occur. To make the most of your family-friendly home, opt for stainresistant upholstery and fabrics. Blankets, couches, and even dining room chairs should be easy to clean so you can get back to your fun-filled activities as soon as possible without the worry of stains. Satin finish wall paint is another top choice for creating the perfect family-friendly space. Matte or flat finish paints are tough to keep clean; the paint will come right off with the dirt and debris on the wall. Glossy paint finishes tend to show every imperfection on your walls and are simply too shiny for most interior spaces. Satin finishes, on the other hand, offer a unique balance of beauty, shine, and easy maintenance.

8

80

9 Curate Creative Spaces What kinds of activities will take place in your home? Homework, craft projects, or board games should all have their place in your space, but where will that space be? Create an area that can double as a few different spaces, whether it’s time to start prepping for dinner or time to break out your favorite puzzle. Kitchen islands are a trendy, useful addition to any home, and they can double as the perfect spot for homework and artwork, especially if you want to keep the kids busy while you’re in the kitchen. Islands also work well for gathering around a birthday cake, allowing everyone to join in the fun.

FLOORING 101 CARPET ONE FLOOR & HOME HAS THE WIDEST SELECTION OF COLORS AND STYLES AVAILABLE TO FIT YOUR SPECIFIC FLOORING NEEDS. BUT BEFORE YOU CHOOSE, HERE ARE SOME BASIC GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINING WHICH FLOORING OPTION IS RIGHT FOR YOU.

FLOORING 101

TILE Both timeless and trendy, tile can complement any style, ranging from traditional to contemporary. This flooring also resists most spills and is a great option for moisture-prone areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and foyers.

LAMINATE

Laminate flooring offers the look of hardwood, tile, or stone at a more affordable price point. The unique construction of laminate flooring makes the product highly durable and waterresistant and therefore a great candidate for high-traffic and moisture-prone areas.

AREA RUGS Area rugs make a wonderful addition to hard-surface flooring, adding a level of protection, along with increased warmth and comfort. Available in a wide variety of colors, designs, and sizes, area rugs can play a major role in a room’s dÊcor.

82

CARPET

Carpet is a great choice for almost any room in your home because of its warmth and comforting, quiet qualities. With today’s advanced flooring technologies, carpet is softer, stronger, and more stain-resistant than ever before. Carpet comes in a variety of colors, patterns, and styles and is a key design element for your room remodel.

HARDWOOD

Hardwood flooring has beauty, strength, and character, along with options for every look. From smooth, glossy, traditional strips to wide, weathered planks, hardwood creates a beautiful backdrop for any room. Today’s hardwood floors are also milled and finished using techniques that require much lower maintenance than in years past.

VINYL

Vinyl flooring offers an elegant appearance and enduring value. Modern, cuttingedge technologies and digital design make natural-looking textures and great visual depth possible. Luxury vinyl tile is one of the newest, most popular flooring choices today, offering trendy finishes that closely resemble wood, tile, and stone.

A Note from the Designer This kitchen is truly the heart of the home in more ways than one. It’s the first room you see as you walk in, and it’s open to both the living room and dining room. It’s the central hub for all family meals, entertaining, weekend hangouts, and so much more. You can be sitting at the island catching up on some work, lounging in the living room watching the game, or doing some homework on the dining room table all while maintaining a conversation with the cook. The double island means one can be used as a prep surface while the other remains clear, which is useful for entertaining but also for when your family just wants to spend time with you while doing their own thing. Open concepts like this one are great for families with small toddlers who are too young to be alone. The laundry room is also on the same floor, which means Mom and Dad will never have to leave their babies out of sight while getting some work done around the house. The main wall of cabinetry where the stove is includes a hidden, paneled fridge and a mirrored pantry, creating symmetry on both ends. With few or no upper cabinets in this kitchen, the natural light coming in from both ends of the house shines right through, and even on gloomy days fills the home with light. The double island not only is the perfect solution to a tricky layout but also gives our clients the best of both worlds: one island where the sink can face out toward the window so they can watch their son play in the backyard and another where they can host guests and face the stools. Having two islands plus a built-in dining room create plenty of space for added storage. The dining room bar is used as both a home for the family’s wine collection and a coffee bar. The storage found in the island facing the window is perfect for board games and toddler toys. Outside of the main workspace is the kitchen, which is close enough to be accessible when seated at the dining table or island. It’s great for sippy cups and all of the plasticware, which can remain accessible to the little ones.
