ON THE COVER “To design with purpose, you must understand intent; what is the intended use or desire for the spaces you are examining? It’s easy to get lost in material selection and picking out new furniture pieces because, let’s face it, that’s the fun part, but it’s also important to understand the reason why. I have a three-pronged approach when it comes to reimagining spaces with purpose: what it needs to be (the intent), what needs to change (the transformation), and how to finesse (the editing).”

Spring Gardening
One of nature’s best gifts is the promise of new seasons. Winter, spring, summer, fall— each inspires a different sense of purpose within us and our homes. For us, spring evokes renewal—a clean slate, reorganized spaces, and revitalized décor—and we’re here for it. While these things remain top-of-mind this season, we feel that it’s more important than ever to lend some appreciation and energy toward Mother Nature’s type of renewal. Whether it’s a potted herb garden, a new perennial bed, or an array of your favorite annuals, you won’t regret getting your hands dirty and breathing in some fresh spring air.

HIGH DESIGN CARPET
As you plan a refresh of your home décor (because who isn’t these days?), choosing a flooring type that will fulfill your design dreams can be overwhelming. If style is a top priority, you may feel limited to a hardwood look throughout your home. While a beautiful hardwood or luxury vinyl floor isn’t a bad choice, if you desire something a little warmer, softer, and more comfortable underfoot, then we’re here to tell you that you can still achieve that beautiful, polished look with carpet. You might think that carpet is just a more casual flooring option, but it’s time to explore some of the trendier carpet styles that will not only make your space more comfortable but also elevate your design.

Style Choosing an Elevated Carpet Style
Ready to explore the best of both worlds—comfort and style? Let’s start with color.
For many of us, home became a central hub as we shifted our work, school, and entertainment to our home base. Taking the time to make our kitchens, living areas, playrooms, spare bedrooms—any space we can find—into functional places is now key. Home has become the place where we relax with family, have a virtual night out with friends, cook our meals, work in our home office, teach our children, and enjoy a good movie or game night. As we adjust to this new way of living—and dare we say, even enjoy our slightly smaller world—calm colors that reflect nature are going to be vital for keeping a healthy work–life balance.

Focus on Natural Elements
Solid colors will give way to tonal ones this season as we delve into the comfort of soft grays, wooden beiges, black stones, and other earth tones. All these blended hues can work to tie a bit of nature into our interior design.
this year, people are reaching to their past for security. You will see a lot of incorporating things of the past and heirlooms into home design to add a nod of nostalgia that makes everyone and everything feel safe.
These natural styles create the feel of a comfortable sanctuary and soothing environment to live and work in, which translates into a more earthy and subdued color palette. Unlike previous years where we’ve seen a pop of bold colors,
Following this rule of thumb, carpet manufacturers are shifting to a pleasantly serene palette of beiges, soft pinks, and ocean blues.

Functional Focus Perhaps one of the most important themes in carpet styles this year is the idea of functional focus. Your carpet should not only be stylishly you but also serve a bigger purpose: providing comfortable and durable living underfoot. Doing almost everything at home, from workouts to office work, means that your flooring needs to be able to support your active lifestyle. The good news is that durability is in! Along with the focus on natural elements this season, easy-to-clean carpets that are made of nonporous materials are making a comeback. This calls to mind specific carpets that are stain-resistant, waterproof, and pet-proof. This practical trend is due to consumers looking to control what they can and striving to make their space as comfortable, functional, and operable as possible.
Statement-Making Patterns One way to elevate your carpet style is to choose a pattern. For the more daring, this could be a boldly contrasting polka-dot like Stanton’s Dottie. For a stunning look that’s a little more subtle, there are many patterns available in tonal shades. These options provide beautiful style but also fade appropriately into the background to allow other décor items to shine. For a more organic vibe, we love the deconstructed patterns of Looking Forward and So Refined from the Passages by Tigressá collection. They are reminiscent of a favorite well-worn rug and add a cozy-chic element to your space. When a little more formality is in order, a structured pattern like Story to Tell or Bright Future, also from the Passages by Tigressá collection, makes a perfectly poised statement.
n o i t c fun
Not only can carpeting add an element of function to your home design, but it’s also an affordable alternative to the more expensive flooring options like traditional hardwood, porcelain tile, and luxury vinyl plank. In past years, hard surface floors like waterproof luxury vinyl and engineered hardwood have been a staple in the retail flooring market. This year, many designers are looking to custom area rugs to tie spaces together and make them more comfortable to live and work in.

Elevated Carpet Style Sans Commitment If all this carpet style talk has you thinking about an elevated style floor, but you’re just not quite ready to commit to those beautiful wall-to-wall polka dots, there is another way. Custom area rugs are the perfect way to take advantage of the beautiful carpet styles available and update any room with some added warmth and softness, whether it be turning an extra bedroom into a home office or creating a study nook in a storage closet
for your little ones. Custom area rugs make perfect pieces to throw under your coffee table or roll out as a runner in the hallway. Muted color tones are a great canvas for your bigger statement pieces and bolder décor. Patterns liven up more subdued décor. The best part of creating a custom area rug is that you can easily switch up your design and create a whole new look.
STANTON L Belladonna Ocean
Although cut pile patterns used to make up a small fraction of the flooring installed, homeowners are now using more patterns to make smaller areas of their home more unique. Many of the new carpet styles available reflect current home décor trends, drawing inspiration from the tribal look, color blocking, medallions, and more traditional, less edgy patterns than before.
26
As you look to freshen up your décor and maybe even take on a few renovation projects this spring, turn to carpet as the flooring choice for your home. Whether you are searching for a patterned wall-to-wall carpet or a formal custom-sized area rug, don’t forget to tie in those beautiful tonal colors to bring a sense of comfortable tranquility to your home design.

Multifunctional spaces in a home are truly the best way to perfect a specific area and make a room useful for everyone. From a bedroom that will sleep two or more kids to a kitchen that will constantly be used by a family of five, there’s simply no better way to take advantage of all the possibilities of a home than by designing multiuse spaces. Our stunning collection of beautiful home interiors features a variety of design styles and various rooms that showcase just how easy it is to create multiuse spaces that are practical, trendy, and beautiful.

A TOUCH OF MODERN Bedrooms don’t only need to include beds and nightstands. They can also include other elements and be just as practical and multifunctional as any other room, especially if there are no built-in closets. Providing as much as two closets’ worth of space, these two armoires make a built-in closet unnecessary. Not only do they offer storage for clothing, including tall items, but they also fill the empty space in the room and add to the modern design with their glossy finish. And, nestled between the closet spaces is a conveniently placed desk or vanity space, leaving plenty of room to walk between the bed and the storage closets. Design by RED BARRINUEVO Photography by MIKE CHAJECKI 30
COZY AND COMFORTABLE There’s no shortage of practicality, comfort, and beauty in this multifunctional bedroom that doubles as a comfortable seating area. Symmetric wooden nightstands with metal pulls embellish a tufted headboard that exudes a traditional style, and the chic nailhead accents help unite several styles. What truly makes this room multifunctional and unique, though, are the leather chairs situated at the end of the bed. A fuzzy throw rests atop one of the leather chairs, adding texture and warmth while also providing a place to relax in peace and quiet. Traditional but chic, this bedroom is the ideal space to escape to after a busy day. Design by KATE DAVIDSON Photography by JASON HARTOG PHOTOGRAPHY Beautiful Design Made Simple | 31

EDGY ELEGANCE Showcasing just how calm and collected an entryway can be, this multiuse entryway features enough storage for a family while keeping its unique design flair. However, what’s truly multifunctional about this space is how it provides as much storage as a typical hallway closet. Tall cabinets next to the door offer ample space for linens, summer or winter accessories, and even last-minute weather items like umbrellas. Six compartments beneath a bench seat also add to the substantial storage, and a basket increases the storage further. Deep brown cabinetry and beadboard feel sleek and composed, whereas hooks and a light fixture add a mix of metals. Design by KATE DAVIDSON Photography by MIKE CHAJECKI

TRADITIONALLY CHARMING Using an extra few feet of wall space in the living room to create a desk nook makes this traditionally styled space perfectly multifunctional. A desk lamp, pinboard, and comfortable office chair adorn the desk and make it practical while adding to the overall appearance of this charming space. From an early morning work session to daily notetaking and more, this adorable desk space offers just the right amount of productivity, class, and style. FULLY FUNCTIONAL A wine cooler, dining area, coffee nook, and full kitchen make this space a top-notch multifunctional room that doesn’t disappoint. Featuring various seating areas, there’s a place for everyone to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee, read the morning newspaper, or gather during a dinner party. Not only does this space have room for everyone, but there’s also a dedicated area for each task: large countertops for preparing food next to the stove; wine glass storage in the nook, perfect for quickly opening up a bottle; and plenty of counter stools for entertaining guests while appetizers are being served.

INSPIRATION: THE FORGOTTEN SPACES
SHINY AND CHIC Full of chic brass accents, white cabinetry, and glass shelving, this large bathroom lends enough space to create a seating area for applying makeup or getting ready for a night on the town. Rather than going traditional with a sink and some countertop space, this trendy, upscale bathroom becomes multifunctional, offering increased storage by using wall space wisely. Paired with one-of-a-kind lighting, including vertical, horizontal, and chandelier fixtures, there’s the perfect amount of chic décor, elevated design, and high-gloss materials to create a complete, polished look. AN ELEGANT ADDITION The entryway is one area of the home that begs for storage, efficiency, and organization but often lacks the elements necessary to fulfill these needs. In this stunning entryway, however, substantial cabinetry, a large mirror, and a sconce provide all the components necessary for an entryway that is precisely as it should be—flawlessly multifunctional. Ideal for storing shoes or cold winter accessories under the cabinets, checking the mirror before waltzing out the door, and leaving the light on for a well-lit return home after a long day, it checks all the important boxes for a useful entryway. Design by SARA BEDERMAN Photography by STEPHANI BUCHMAN 36
THE HIDDEN NOOK Taking up just a small corner of the kitchen nook, this cute desk area makes a kitchen into a working space for any family member. Using the same white kitchen cabinets above the desk helps blend this area into the already beautiful kitchen space and creates additional storage for office supplies. A wooden chair makes the space feel functional and tucks in nicely when the kitchen is bustling with friends and family or guests. Taking up just a small corner of the kitchen nook proves just how easy it is to create multifunctional spaces in any home while also staying true to the design vision. JOYFUL DESIGN
It’s safe to say that 2021 will be a year that finally brings a little renewed faith and hope—it’s that breath of fresh air and light at the end of the tunnel. As the world acclimatizes to the new ordinary, I can’t help but feel a sense of rejuvenation and rebirth and the yearning to echo a similar sentiment of meaningful change and cathartic release in my own home. But before I start to purge unwanted items, it’s important to examine the idea of purpose. This is always the most critical piece of the puzzle and a starting point to any project. To design with purpose, you must understand intent; what is the intended use or desire for the spaces you are examining? It’s easy to get lost in material selection and picking out new furniture pieces because, let’s face it, that’s the fun part, but it’s also important to understand the reason why. I have a threepronged approach when it comes to reimagining spaces with purpose: what it needs to be (the intent), what needs to change (the transformation), and how to finesse (the editing).
40
The thought of approaching all this can seem a little daunting, but it’s more intuitive and innate than you think. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and get lost in the details when deciding to make updates or renovations to your home. You might ask yourself questions like: What room should I start with? Am I choosing the right color? Will this just be a passing trend? Am I investing in the right pieces? I’ll let you in on a little designer secret . . . there isn’t a right or wrong answer because design is subjective—as in, the only thing any of these questions have in common is how each of them relates to you and your family’s needs. What may work for one family may be a complete waste of time and resources for yours. So, take a breath, clear your mind, and let that little voice inside your head take center stage. If you listen carefully, you’ll realize you already have the answer to how each space needs to function.
Beautiful Design Made Simple | 41
JOYFUL DESIGN
STARTING WITH
FUNCTIONALITY Good design is always led by functionality. However, trying to hone in on your own design intent can be trickier than it seems. A great starting place is to ask yourself if the rooms you currently have in your home are still serving their initial purpose. Maybe that beautifully crafted guest bedroom isn’t getting a lot of use, and perhaps it’s now the perfect time to turn it into the dream home office you’ve always wanted. Another way to approach function and intention is to identify problem zones. For example, does a certain section of the dining table get completely out of control when it comes time to dinner with the kids? Or does your living room always end up turning into a mess by the end of the night, no matter how hard you try and keep it under control? These are all problems that need to be addressed first and foremost in their function, not their appearance. So now that you’ve established a little more clarity around intent, where exactly do you start in creating a meaningful transformation? A design principle that I abide by is to design for who you actually are.
42
What I mean by this is that you should be honest about how you actually live versus how you wish you lived. If you have high aspirations for a perfectly serene and minimal living room, but the reality is that, by 7 p.m., it becomes a dumping ground for your work notebooks, binders, and laptops, make peace with that and try to design a solution that will work with your lifestyle. Perhaps you dedicate half of the living room credenza to storing your work-from-home equipment and create a tangible yet hidden space for things to go. I once had a client who loved the new kitchen nook I designed for her so much, but, when it came time to have a meal with her two-year-old, it simply became a warzone. So rather than trying to change her family’s eating routine, we simply added a laundry basket (disguised as a charming wicker basket) complete with a lid to store a set of sheets to place on the floor when it was dinner time. When everyone was happy and fed, the sheets went back into their proper home (within arm’s reach of the table), and her nook went back to looking beautiful.
Sometimes all it takes are these subtle tweaks and additions to completely change how you experience your space. But what do you do when the amount of change needs to be substantially more dramatic? I start by considering what updates in the room can be made to create the biggest impact with minimal investment. Ninety-nine percent of the time, paint and wallpaper are your best friends. If your dark and gloomy dining room isn’t bringing you joy, then a fresh coat of sun-drenched Hawthorne Yellow can be completely transformative. Adding a subtle houndstooth-textured wallpaper to your home office can have a profound effect, bringing it from a drab little room with a desk to a British-inspired den and library. With so many palettes and patterns, the options and potential are limitless. Don’t be afraid to try something new this year. Repainting or wallpapering a room will be substantially easier on your wallet than committing to a new set of furniture.
Beautiful Design Made Simple | 43
JOYFUL DESIGN
DECLUTTERING AND ORGANIZING Something interesting happens in our brains when we use the term “declutter.” Picking out new furniture or drapery can be fun, but sometimes the very idea of the “decluttering” process is enough to elicit an anxiety attack or complete mental breakdown. Sifting through sentimental memories and having to make an endless number of decisions can be stressful, which can ultimately lead to complete analysis paralysis—a state where your inability to make a decision prevents you from moving forward in any way. Influencers like Marie Kondo and the gals from The Home Edit are leading the charge in decluttering, and a key takeaway is to hone in on what truly brings you joy. If something doesn’t serve a function, make your room look beautiful, or have some sense of personal connection to you, then perhaps it’s time to upcycle and send it to the donation box. Having a room with a thoughtfully curated number of sentimental items is way more effective than a space filled with items that bring you a mediocre amount of joy.
44
If the term “decluttering” strikes fear in your heart, take baby steps by practicing the art of grouping. Instead of having personal memorabilia peppered throughout the living room, dedicate one entire bookcase to displaying all your favorite possessions. The act of grouping items and trinkets into one area will create a huge impact and reclaim some breathing room. Your eye will start to see them as one larger object (e.g., a bookcase) as opposed to broken decorative fragments that can create extra noise and clutter. Another easy solution is to decrease the amount of open storage and shelving in the room. Closed storage is your best friend. Simply adding doors to open cabinets will make a world of difference. Open shelving needs to be art directed . . . as in, not only do items need to be put away, they also need to be styled and dusted regularly to look visually pleasing. If you have a little bit of extra money to invest, custom millwork and storage is a surefire way to add depth and Zen to your space with the abundance of colors, textures, and decorative paneling available. Any time you can add visual interest to your home by moving items off the floors and onto the walls is a good thing.
Beautiful Design Made Simple | 45
JOYFUL DESIGN
They say, “You are what you eat.” If this is true, then I’m inclined to argue that, “You’re even more of where you live.” You start and end every single day of your life in your home. It’s where you settle on new goals, set your intentions for the day, and raise your children. Taking the time to refocus and examine your most used areas is the first step to creating more functional and beautiful spaces. As you dust off your cleaning supplies this spring to sweep out the old with a revitalized sense of renewal, it’s the perfect time to assess whether your home is truly bringing you joy and purpose.

Today more than ever, our homes are the havens we seek at the end of a long and stressful day. We at Michelle Berwick Design (MBD) see a home like a well-oiled machine; all
the parts need to be working simultaneously to operate at
optimal capacity—very scientific! When we say all the parts need to be working together, we are referring not only to
style, color, and all those pretty things, but also about the floor plan and storage functionality. We want your home
working for you, not you working for your home! There are so many ways we can achieve great balance within a space. That said, before the hammers start swingin’ and the floors start coming up, take time to plan out every inch of your
space to make sure you are not underutilizing what you have to work with. Even if the budget is creeping up, there are still many ways to create that organized, “everything in its place” feeling. The project we are going to be sharing involves all of those elements rolled together to create a space that works perfectly with how our clients live.

“Great design is how the interior works and enhances how you live.” Now come on in: this minty home refresh will take your breath away. In this home renovation, color takes center stage, while form and
function are the Oscar-winning supporting actors. How you use your home is so important to consider when making any alterations. As a designer, I believe form and function must come first. Great design means the interior enhances how you live. Let me show you what makes this home renovation magical.

functional—not to mention you can store twice as much in the same amount of
space! No need to make room for a snack grocery haul.
Large base-cabinet drawers provide
excellent storage for larger appliances,
pots and pans, serving dishes, and even
dinner plates! Dinner plates in a drawer? Yes! It’s a thing. We designed a large pantry here next to the panel-ready
fridge to keep baking and dry goods
readily available. Because there are no
windows in this townhome kitchen, we
designed a plate-rack upper cabinet to sit above the sink. It’s not only cute but also super functional, keeping that precious counter space clear.
The cooktop is flanked with oil and spice
pullouts for the home chef’s convenience. Food tastes so much better when the
ingredients are beautifully organized, am I right? A mint island drops down into the homeowner’s existing table, which
we altered slightly to attach to the island and create an eat-in kitchen area. This
lowered table also provides a great prep area for the aspiring little chefs in our lives!

BEHIND THE DESIGN
54
INTENTIONAL LIVING (AND PLAY) Media storage in a living room is often overlooked. Often, unpleasant black boxes end up being the needed, but unwanted, décor adorning the tops of our media units. Here we designed custom millwork for this family’s diverse entertainment needs. A pulldown door with a gold mesh insert housed all media accessories, yet the mesh still allows access with a remote. We met the media necessities, and didn’t compromise the style at all. We at MBD call that a win! Media consoles, 0—Team MBD, 1. This floor-to-ceiling living room built-in not only houses the media consoles beautifully but also minimizes clutter with drawers for game discs and remotes, as well as other media accessories. Doors allow the homeowners to store miscellaneous items such as batteries and candles because we all know they need a home, too. To add a personal touch to the living room, we included built-in open shelving to showcase travel souvenirs and framed family memories.
Beautiful Design Made Simple | 55
BEHIND THE DESIGN
In the playroom, it was essential to store craft supplies and toys behind closed doors. Introducing built-ins with tons of storage not only kept things tidy but also gave us a chance to add a touch of pretty through the hardware. A built-in desk for both children to work at will grow with the family. The tall pantry doors enhance the height of the ceilings and make the room feel larger. To keep the playroom feeling light and airy, we gave the built-ins a high-gloss white finish.
56
COLOR IS KING Color is a key way to freshen up your home. Whether you decide to paint
your entire home or just add a few new accessories, the impact of introducing a new color will amaze you. One of
our favorite ways to add personality
to a room is by adding some colorful elements.
At this client’s home, the recurring color is mint green. This color came from the front entry tile, which sparked instant
joy in the homeowners’ hearts. The mint color carries throughout the main floor of this townhome and onto the interior doors, as well as onto the kitchen
cabinetry. Sometimes all you need is a
jolt of inspiration, and, bam, you have a design scheme!
Why stop at trim and cabinetry
with color? Yes . . . we even hit the backsplash grout with mint. Mint
grout? You betcha. It ties everything
together and really makes this beautiful marble mini-fish-scale backsplash sing. Using one color throughout the home
adds cohesiveness and is an easy way to freshen up your spaces.
Beautiful Design Made Simple | 57
BEHIND THE DESIGN
Bedrooms are spaces where color can run wild to reflect more of your personality. For this project, a sweet shared bedroom, our design inspiration came from an antique rug. Pink
upholstered beds, complemented by the pink nightstand, and
pink-and-gray drapery bring such joy to this pint-sized space.
“Bedrooms are spaces where color can run wild to reflect more of your personality.”
Pro-tip: when designing any space with a recurring color,
it is important to add and play with varying shades while
repeating the color in the room to add extra depth and interest within the room.
The master bedroom has no lack of color either! Are you
surprised? The trending high-gloss, black-trim wall creates the perfect backdrop for the neutral upholstered headboard. To
contrast with the black, a white textured duvet hangs over the bed topped with white and yellow pillows. The bright yellow barn door invites you into the en suite. Hannah Banana is the
name of that yellow paint color. Now, if that doesn’t make you happy, I don’t know what will.
58
“Custom millwork can create more function and less clutter, giving you a sense of relief.”
Creating space in your home doesn’t necessarily mean
demolishing walls. We created space in this townhome by designing custom millwork to ensure every item
has a home. Custom millwork can create more function and less clutter, giving you a sense of relief. If custom
millwork is outside your budget, simply creating a home for your items in your existing millwork is a great costeffective option to consider!
Introducing a new color into your home can instantly
have you feeling renewed—like adding a red earring and a red lip to your little black dress. Game changer! Our
team loves adding color in unexpected places and ways, such as kitchen cabinetry, baseboard trim, and floor tile. Now consider how you will alter your home this spring to help you feel renewed!

DESIGNER Q&A:
Inspired Spaces for Children AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SARA BEDERMAN
Design by SARA BEDERMAN DESIGN Photography by STEPHANI BUCHMAN
Beautiful Design Made Simple | 61
DESIGNER Q&A
As you can imagine, designing children’s rooms
can be a fun and challenging experience. Kids have a natural way of pushing boundaries and testing limits, which can be refreshing from a design
perspective. We can all take some cues from the next gen when it comes to life, and we can certainly take our design approach. When my team received the
task to design four rooms for sisters, that’s exactly what we did.
What was the goal for these children’s rooms? My goal was to create inspiring spaces for the young teenage sisters to enjoy now and to joyfully grow
in later. It’s a lot tougher than it sounds because the long-term success of interiors designed for kids is based on personalities and preferences that don’t exist yet.
62
Let’s talk color. What was the inspiration behind the color palette for this bedroom? The girls shared a common love of white, which also aligned with myself from a designer’s perspective and which served as the predominant palette in each of the four rooms. White is clean and contemporary, and it has “legs,” which is a key consideration when designing a room for kids. In the face of quickly
changing trends and tastes, the neutrality and versatility of white works well on
all levels. It also proved easy to warm up with texture, color, and some whimsical elements.
Then there’s that obvious theme of pink as the secondary fixture in these rooms,
ranging from a barely-there whisper of pink to an in-your-face hot pink, Pop Artinspired sitting corner—but more on the duo-toned sequined wall and banana swing later!
Pink often gets pigeonholed as the classic color choice for girls—sugar and
spice and everything nice. I wanted to challenge that notion and showcase this
versatile color’s real personality, as reflected by the preferences and personalities
of each girl. The right pink can be powerful, soothing, or lively, depending on the shade and tone.
Beautiful Design Made Simple | 63
DESIGNER Q&A
We love the multifunctional use of this space. What is your best piece of advice when it comes to making the most out of a cozy room? “Cozy” spaces require a tailored approach that maximizes their aesthetic possibilities
while balancing their practical demands. When presented with a small floor plan, I start by
delineating the essential “zones” for the room—in this case, the sleeping, dressing, studying, and socializing areas. Then I layer in all the rest.
64
Beautiful Design Made Simple | 65
DESIGNER Q&A
There are some uniquely angled ceilings in this bedroom. What are some tips for maximizing space when working around structural elements? Custom built-in furniture—such as this bed and dresser/desk concept—offers the best
use of space when dealing with a small room, awkward dimensions, or restrictions of any
kind, such as the angled ceiling. Yes, custom
work will most definitely cost more (as anything custom tends to do), but it will also fit your
space like a well-tailored glove and make the most of every available inch of space.
Going custom also often leads to creative shapes in the furniture, which I love as a unique way of adding unexpected visual interest to a room.
The layered textures in this room are so inviting. What are some of your favorite textures to layer in kids’ rooms? I love a casual, relaxed vibe for kids’ rooms—and a great
way to amp this up is by layering upholstery and textiles. Linen is a favorite fabric because it’s not too heavy or
overbearing. I have also gravitated to large-scale cable-
knits and chunky corduroys, which are texturally weighty and wonderfully comfortable to sink into. 66
A child’s room can be very inspiring for young minds. What were some of the elements that your client wanted to incorporate into your design? The goal was to give the daughters a lounging
area. We incorporated a cozy round swivel chair for curling up with a good book, as well as a
playful shag rug where the kids can hang out with their friends.
The banana swing, first seen at the Miami
Museum of Ice Cream, was also an absolute must. They fell in love with the swing and wanted to
incorporate it into this room, so we had a replica
created just for them. We tucked the swing into a feature bump-out that we wrapped in pink and
gold flip-sequin wall panels, which aptly finish the room with some essential glam.
We always aim to incorporate some playful energy into every kid’s room that we design. Each space has some amazing design features, such as the
princess theme in one of the rooms, the ballet barre in another, or the aforementioned and adored
banana swing. But, overall, the rooms’ aesthetics are timeless and designed with room to grow.
Beautiful Design Made Simple | 67
DESIGNER Q&A
What would you consider are the top three things to keep in mind when designing rooms for children? 1. Know their tastes will change.
2. Know their functional needs will change, too.
3. This doesn’t necessarily mean you should prepare yourself for
another redesign in a few years—which can prove both mentally and
financially taxing. It just means the room’s design needs to be versatile enough to evolve with your child.
My advice is to choose versatile colors and finishes and items such as adjustable shelves and customizable organizing systems that
can handle a growing child’s ever-changing needs. Multifunctional furniture is also my go-to whenever it’s an option.
68
Children have a vast difference in taste, and we adore seeing their inner personalities shine. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind this fun wall and banana swing? The banana swing corner captures the vibe of the
Miami Museum of Ice Cream—a vibrant and trendy tourist attraction and buzz-worthy selfie hotspot with candy-colored walls and a fun, quirky vibe reflective of Miami life.
Of course, the kids themselves are the ultimate sources of inspiration, both in their current
personalities, and in the hints at who they will be a few years down the road. When designing a kids’ room, we always want the space to have a strong element of fun and playful energy, regardless of
the child’s age. At the same time, we aim to achieve a sophisticated design that’s as long-lasting as possible.

Simple tips for simplifying your home’s look and feel this spring

STYLING TIPS
GET RID OF WHAT DOESN’T SERVE YOU The first step to creating a more
simplified interior style for your home is to get rid of what no longer serves you—not only for the sake of visual clutter but also for the sake of your
soul. Look around. What isn’t being used, doesn’t serve a purpose, or
simply is no longer a good fit for your home? Have you acquired multiples
of certain items over the years? Could you narrow down your collection
of kitchen appliances? Do you have
shelves full of deserted toys, linens, or toiletries? What about a closet that’s
heavy with clothes you haven’t worn in years? Or home décor pieces that you loved 10 years ago but that no
longer suit your current style? Good
riddance to them! Now, once you’ve freed yourself from the burden of
clutter, it’s time to redesign your way to a more simplified style.

CREATE THE ILLUSION OF SPACE We’re not all blessed with high ceilings, large
windows, expansive open-concept floor plans, and
spare bedrooms. Sometimes, you have to create the illusion of space, when the reality of actual space
is just not possible. Our favorite tricks of the trade
come from designer Andrea Colman of Fine Finishes Design: •
•
•
• • Design by ANDREA COLMAN Photography by NICOLE AUBREY
•
Remove items from tabletops and countertops to help accentuate your home’s architecture, furniture, and artwork
Choose “long and lean” flooring like extra-long
hardwood planks or rectangular tiles and install them in a parallel or diagonal fashion
Pick a wall color that’s light and bright to create a greater sense of light and airiness into your home
Keep window treatments minimal or, if possible, go without for a simple, modern look and feel Select furniture with exposed legs, such as
couches, ottomans, chairs, and bedframes, for an open airy feel
Add mirrors and reflective finishes, such as
polished chrome hardware or high sheen fabrics, throughout the home for instant added light

STYLING TIPS
FOLLOW THE 60-30-10 RULE
Color plays a vital role in achieving a simplified interior style. A room with too many colors can feel busy and chaotic, whereas a space with too
few colors can feel stark and lifeless. The 60-30-
10 rule utilizes three colors—a dominant shade, a secondary shade, and an accent color. Your
dominant shade will take up approximately 60 percent of your design. Typically, this leading color will be neutral or subdued in tone such that it can be used heavily without feeling
overwhelming. The secondary shade will take up an additional 30 percent of the room, normally coming in slightly bolder than its leading
backdrop. Finally, an accent color will make up
the last 10 percent. This is your playful color that can come through in accessories, pillows, and throws.

USE THE SAME FLOORING THROUGHOUT MAIN LIVING SPACES Installing the same flooring throughout the main
living area creates instant visual continuity, blurring the divide from room to room for a streamlined and simplified feel. Offering both beauty and function, a waterproof, engineered hardwood like Hydrotek™ H2O is the perfect candidate for this tactic because it is suitable for both design-focused spaces like
the formal living area or dining room and perfectly capable in the work-heavy areas like the kitchen,
family room, or foyer. Opt for a medium tone style
that’s not too heavy in graining, like Anchor Wharf in Desert Sand by Hydrotek™ H2O, from Carpet One Floor & Home’s 2021 Trending 10 list.

5.
INVEST IN SMALL UPDATES THAT IMPROVE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE Convenience brings comfort. Choose a space and invest in one or two small updates that
will make a positive difference in your dayto-day life. In the kitchen, this might mean
investing in a tiered organization system for your workhorse drawers. Or, it could mean a new chalkboard wall to keep important
dates, lists, and reminders front and center
for the entire family. When considering what improvements to tackle, remember that not all updates need to be big, expensive, and
overwhelming. Sometimes the simple things make the biggest difference.
