Give the Gift of Reading
The United Kingdom has long enjoyed a wonderful way to support independent bookstores. More than 80 years ago, the charming English publisher Harold Raymond created an easy way to give your friend a book. He polled his friends after Christmas and learned they received a total of 119 gifts, but only three of them were books. He determined the reason behind this sad state of affairs is that gift-givers are afraid of giving the wrong book. “I cannot say why [this fear] does not apply equally to cigarettes or powder puffs,” he wrote in a trade magazine. “I can only say that apparently it does not, and that I wish it did.” He questioned the “capacity for giving pleasure” of many of the presents received, commenting that surely a book is more welcome a gift than a “hatpin, ornament, photo frame . . . or ashtray.” To address this situation, he invented “book tokens,” a type of gift certificate redeemable for merchandise at any bookstore in England. Since then, book tokens have grown into one of the largest multi-retail gift cards in the UK and Ireland and were renamed “National Book Tokens” in 2000. Graced with beautiful and historic art, the tokens became treasures unto themselves. You can enjoy a wonderful collection of book tokens at www.nationalbooktokens.com. In the spirit of Harold Raymond’s love for giving books, our catalog cover features a 1936 book token by artist Gwen White. In choosing this cover, we encourage you to give the gift of reading this holiday. By shopping at independent bookstores, you are investing directly in your own community. Browse this catalog, choose something for everyone on your list, and visit one our nearly 200 member independent bookstores throughout the Midwest (see pages 21–22) to purchase a gift that would make Mr. Raymond proud.
