We Design for and with Nature.

Sustainable Practice U+ Design Partners is committed to the idea that environmental stewardship and effective use of resources must be the foundation for design of the built environment. Sustainable design principles are woven into all our design solutions and inform our approach to the relationship of landscape and waterscape design to architecture. Across a vast range of project scales, we must always be prepared to consider the environmental impact of our choices in the belief that an effective design process starts with a sincere intention to create buildings, landscapes, and public spaces that simultaneously serve the daily quality of experience of human occupants, engage the natural environment and uplift the human spirit.
01
Biophilic Design Principles We are often guided by metaphors of nature and the organic environment to inform our design concepts and articulate an understanding of the reciprocal relationships and complementarity of natural forces and building systems, building engineering, and construction means and methods.
“We aspire to create lasting contributions to the built environment that honor the quest for new knowledge, and that uplift the human spirit.” Our Core Values (Convergence)

Pukou Hospital Nanjing, Pukou District, China Program Full Service Hospital (Inpatient, Outpatient, Emergency & Administrative Services Area 371,753 m2 Status SD Awards 2020 AIA NOVA Design Awards - Award of Excellence - Unbuilt
Nestled into a serene urban setting at the foothills of Laoshan Mountain which borders the Chengan River; a tributary to the nearby Yangtze River rests the existing Pukou Hospital campus. The hospital is an important service to the Pukou District in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province. The design for this new 371,753 m2 full service hospital building provides a new branding opportunity for the client while meeting the needs for high-quality medical resources. The design sought to maximize efficiency, sustainability, and patient experience while placing an overall emphasis on patient-focused care. The conceptual metaphors of “sky”, “waterfall”, & “forest” invite a sense of breath into the design by celebrating the important role to heal and sustain quality human life.

Nanjing Culture and Sports Center Pukou, Jiangsu Province, China Program Arena, Gym, Swimming Pool, Theater, Cultural Hall / Expo Area 309,360 m2 Status Under Construction Collaborative Partners CTA
The design for this project began with an investigation of place. From our research, we discovered four elements; Mountain, Water, Wall, and Forest, were major themes that embody the spirit of Nanjing. Intrigued by the potential relationship between these four physical environments, the city, and its people; this project aims to synthesize these elements into extraordinary spaces. The four major program anchor the corners of the rectangular site which creates a large urban plaza with water features that visually connect to the adjacent canal bordering the site to the east. The outer edge of the campus is fortified with a dramatic stone wall creating an abstracted echo of Ming Great Wall. By contrast, on the inside of the urban plaza, the buildings are clad with transparent glass on the ground level, while a lantern like, white frosted volume hovers above the lower structures creating a magical effect reflective of ancient times.

Yanghe Headquarters Nanjing, China Program Global Headquarters Area 77,916 m2 Status CD
The architectural expression of the New Yanghe Headquarters in Nanjing draws on the organic themes that are essential to the Yanghe brand. The concept is driven by Senior Management’s desire to create a memorable brand image in a major urban corridor and to introduce Yanghe to the global market. Within the urban context, the design intends to be transporting in a way that is consistent with the three distilled spirit product lines: Ocean Blue, Sky Blue and Dream Blue. Elements of the design refer to these natural and organic guiding brand themes through building form, detail design and material selection.

Baiziting Community Cultural Center Xuanwu District, China Program Mixed-Use Campus: (Renovation) 11 Historic Buildings, (New Construction) Luxury Commercial, Retail, Restaurant, Financial Complex and Underground Parking Land Area 28,672 m2
The Baiziting Community Cultural Center Project is located in Xuanwu District at the intersection of a major Commercial and Cultural axis near the city center of Nanjing, China. This project will showcase the style and art of the Republic of China while also improving the cultural and artistic value of the land. The design concept for the project rests on the value of “Cultural Exchange”, and therefore the metaphor that emerged to tell the story became “A Tale of Two Cities” taking references from Nanjing & Taipai, and Nanjing & London. The resulting design elements create a high-end cultural and commercial destination marked by a distinctive urban style, extensively integrated with a lively new arts district on the first below ground level; an innovative use of submerged space in a high density urban context.

BPV Business Center Pukou District, Nanjing, China Program Mixed-Use (Apartments & Commercial) Area 110,119 m2 Status Construction
The new BPV Business Center is an administrative and business center in the Nanjing Biomedical Valley R&D Zone of Jiangbei New Research District. With the concepts of Cooperation, Dialogue and Embracing Nature, the twin apartment towers take form from a setting sail, referencing the transformation of wind energy into forward motion. Bounded by the majestic rolling Laoshan Mountain range to the west, the project acts as a reminder that technology, ingenuity and natural forces interact. The dynamic lighting elements employed on the prefabricated modules of the gently curved tower sails reinforces the building as the Landmark of the Innovative Zone.

AI Park Phase II Nanjing, Pukou District, China Program Office Headquarters, R&D Area 114,451 m2 Status Completed, 2019
AI Park is located in the Pukou District of Nanjing, China and is a part of a larger transportation-oriented development plan for China-Europe Intelligent Rail Transportation International Research Innovation Base. The project occupies two adjacent plots of land which will be built in phases. Phase I of the master plan will be a multistory factory and Phase II will be an office headquarters. A unique challenge for this project was to successfully integrated these divergent uses to maximize efficiency while ensuring comfort for occupants within and around the site.
