SITE ANALYSIS LIVE / WORK - BALTIMORE - REPAIRING THE URBAN FABRIC CREATING THRESHOLD CONDITIONS AT VARYING SCALES EACH REQUIRES A DIFFERENT SET OF TOOLS, OR “ELEMENTS” TO HELP CREATE THE DESIRED SPATIAL EFFECT. ACCORDING TO KEVIN LYNCH: “SPATIAL CHARACTER VARIES WITH PROPORTION AND SCALE...SCALE IS THE RELATION OF SIZE TO THE SIZE OF OTHER OBJECTS...DUE TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HUMAN EYE AND THE SIZE OF OUR BODIES...ALL THIS REFERS TO THE STATIONARY OBSERVER OR THE MAN MOVING SLOWLY. SPACE PERCEPTION AT HIGH SPEED IS ANOTHER ANIMAL.”(SITE PLANNING, THIRD EDITION, PG.157). THEREFORE, THIS THESIS INVESTIGATION FOCUSES ON THE SCALE OF THE PEDESTRIAN (SINGULAR AND IN GROUPS) AS HE OR SHE MOVES THROUGH SPACE, AUGMENTED BY EACH THRESHOLD CONDITION.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL BOUNDARY - CITY BLOCK SCALE DEFINING THRESHOLD EXPERIENCE THROUGH PROGRAM ANALYSIS THE SOCIAL BOUNDARY PROGRAM / USE THE SOCIAL THRESHOLD IS BEST EXPRESSED THROUGH THE SCALE OF THE URBAN BLOCK. IN THIS CASE THE BLOCK FORMATION IS DEFINED BY PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS. THE THREE THRESHOLD EXPERIENCES OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE AT THE BLOCK SCALE ARE: 1. THE STREET 2. SEMI-PUBLIC AND PUBLIC OPEN SPACE 3. THE INFILL CONDITION (RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PROPOSED NEW AND EXISTING LAND USE AND PROGRAM)

A THRESHOLD IS AN IMPORTANT SPACE BECAUSE IT PROVIDES A NECESSARY BUFFER BETWEEN (CIRCULATION INDUCING) AND INHABITABLE (BOUNDARY DEFINING) SPACE. PUBLIC OPEN SPACE / GREEN SPACE / IN-BETWEEN SPACES ARE ESSENTIALLY THRESHOLDS IN THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT. WITHOUT THESE POCKETS OF REPOSE THERE WOULD BE LITTLE TO NO TRANSITION BETWEEN THE INTERIOR SPACES FOR LIVING AND WORKING TO THE PUBLIC SIDEWALK/STREET (DOMINATED BY VEHICULAR CIRCULATION AND PARKING). BY CREATING INTERCONNECTED POCKETS OF GREEN SPACE & VISTAS WHICH WEAVE INTO THE EXISTING RESIDENTIAL ROW HOUSE AND INDUSTRIAL WORKING URBAN FABRIC CONNECTS THE DISJOINTED DISTRICTS ON THE PENINSULA TO LARGER PARKS AND SURROUNDING LANDMARKS. THE SITE STRATEGY TAKEN REGULATES THE URBAN FABRIC AND INFRASTRUCTURE TO THE CONSTRAINTS OF THE PRE-INDUSTRIAL MASTER PLAN.

VIEW ACCESS CORRIDOR AT LAWRENCE STREET
CREATING THRESHOLD CONDITIONS AT VARYING SCALES EACH REQUIRES A DIFFERENT SET OF TOOLS, OR “ELEMENTS”
THE EXISTING CONDITION OF LAWRENCE STREET CONNECTS VEHICULAR TRAFFIC FROM THE SOUTH GATE SHOPPING
TO HELP CREATE THE DESIRED SPATIAL EFFECT. ACCORDING TO KEVIN LYNCH: “SPATIAL CHARACTER VARIES WITH PRO-
CENTER TO THE MUSEUM OF INDUSTRY. IN ORDER TO REFOCUS THIS VIEW ACCESS CORRIDOR, THE OVERALL STREET
PORTION AND SCALE...SCALE IS THE RELATION OF SIZE TO THE SIZE OF OTHER OBJECTS...DUE TO THE CHARACTERIS-
WIDTH HAS BEEN REDUCED TO MATCH THE CROSS STREETS JUST ADJACENT, AND A PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY PROMENADE
TICS OF THE HUMAN EYE AND THE SIZE OF OUR BODIES...ALL THIS REFERS TO THE STATIONARY OBSERVER OR THE MAN
AND SIDEWALK HAS BEEN EXPANDED TO CELEBRATE THE CONNECTION TO THE HARBOR, PARK, AND MUSEUM OF INDUS-
MOVING SLOWLY. SPACE PERCEPTION AT HIGH SPEED IS ANOTHER ANIMAL.”(SITE PLANNING, THIRD EDITION, PG.157).
TRY. THE USES ALONG THIS THRESHOLD CORRIDOR INCLUDE RETAIL SHOPS AND RESTAURANT ESTABLISHMENTS.
THEREFORE, THIS THESIS INVESTIGATION FOCUSES ON THE SCALE OF THE PEDESTRIAN (SINGULAR AND IN GROUPS) AS HE OR SHE MOVES THROUGH SPACE, AUGMENTED BY EACH THRESHOLD CONDITION.
