A warm

WELCOME

to the Experience Devon 2015 guide.

The county of Devon offers something for all ages, all year round. In fact, one of the hardest decisions you will have to make about your trip to this diverse county is where to go first! In addition to beautiful golden beaches and stunning scenery, we are blessed with rustic villages and towns, historic buildings and two National Parks. Devon is proud to boast no less than 5 areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO Geopark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and two National Parks. Possibly the most famous of which is Dartmoor with over 350 square miles to explore. The famous historic cities of Plymouth, where Sir Francis Drake set sail to circumnavigate the globe in 1577, and Exeter, where parts of the Roman Wall still remain, are both full of excitement and entertainment. Couple this with some superb shopping from main high street retailers to independent shops and boutiques, they are a must for the whole family. The gateway to the English Riviera and the UNESCO-stamped Geopark is Torquay, a place teeming with maritime history and playing host to a number of sporting events including the Riviera’s own regatta. South Devon’s beautiful coast and undulating hills are backdropped by the dramatic wilderness of Dartmoor, making it a region of contrasts. Throughout South Devon, there is an abundance of galleries, music festivals and alternative lifestyle centres.

North Devon has its own unique character, with the rugged beauty of Exmoor National Park, a perfect location for hiking or mountain biking, to golden sand beaches and excellent surf. It is also home to many stately homes, with their glorious grounds, through to the steep cobbled street and deep blue harbour in the timeless village of Clovelly. With so much to offer, you’ll be spoilt for choice wherever you decide to go; however, no trip would be complete without a traditional Devon Cream Tea and a healthy debate about whether the jam or clotted cream goes on first!

Its deep wooded valleys, high cliffs, wide open moorland and clear streams provide inspiration and enjoyment to both locals and visitors. The farms and villages that have developed over hundreds of years combine to create a rich landscape that belies the National Park’s relatively small size of 267 miles2 (693km2). Exmoor is also an amazing place to marvel at the wonders of the night sky and in recognition of its dark skies and the work that the National Park is doing to keep them that way, Exmoor was designated Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve in autumn 2011. More information and telescope hire is available from National Park Centres. Exmoor National Park supports a fascinating variety of wildlife including herds of wild red deer and free living Exmoor ponies, rich lichen communities, rare fritillary butterflies, bats and other species uncommon in southern Britain. Exmoor National Park Authority works with others

to protect the special qualities of the National Park. It also provides a number of services from planning and conservation to high quality visitor information and maintaining Exmoor’s excellent network of waymarked footpaths and bridleways. The amazing new Lynmouth Pavilion was opened just over a year ago and is home to the National Park Centre and the Heritage Lottery Funded Lynmouth Pavilion Project which is set to deliver another fun programme of events this year. The Centre has a mix of high tech and more traditional exhibits with everything from a huge touch screen table and iPads to a traditional seaside photo board. WILDLIFE

Why not try one of the great networks of cycleways, footpaths and bridleways to help you explore this fabulous countryside and get active at the same time. Devon’s environment has something to offer throughout the year, indeed many sites are best visited out of season. Nothing can beat an exhilarating cliff top walk on a blustery winters’ day, the vivid autumn colours as you stroll through woodlands or the activity in the estuaries, teeming with migrating and wintering birds. Our heaths and moorlands take on their own unique beauty during the winter months and the stunning displays of spring flowers such as wild daffodils and bluebells are simply breath-taking. Devon provides endless opportunities for all ages and abilities to get out and active. Leave the car at home and use the integrated bus and train network to access multi-use routes, ideal for safe and easy walking or cycling. A number of accessible trails are suitable for families with young children and pushchairs or the elderly and those who use wheelchairs. So why not take a weeks’ holiday to walk a section of the

HORSE RIDING

South West Coast Path or cross the county from north to south coast along the Two Moors Way? Or take a day out with a leisurely cycle ride around the Exe Estuary or for the more active go mountain biking in the Tamar Valley. For those who enjoy wildlife Devon has an abundance and variety that few other parts of Britain can rival. From wintering avocets to Dartford warblers and cirl buntings, even the most enthusiastic bird watcher will find something to excite. Our landscape also tells a fascinating story, don’t miss the Jurassic Coast in East Devon, Slapton Ley in the South Hams, the towering cliffs of the Hartland coastline or the awesome granite tors strewn across Dartmoor, to see geology in action! www.exploredevon.info

DEVON & SOMERSET BORDER

Exmoor National Park, although one of Britain’s smaller national parks, is certainly big on beauty with an amazing variety of landscapes encompassing high cliffs that plunge down to the sea, gorse and heather covered moorland, ancient woodlands, valleys and rivers. The many footpaths are well maintained by the National Park rangers team based in Dulverton. Exmoor is partly in North Devon with the larger part being in Somerset. The border between the two counties on the coast is at County Gate where there is a visitor centre giving information to enable you to get the most from your visit to the area. Nearby are the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, linked by a Victorian waterpowered cliff railway, and thatched buildings on the harbour side make a picturesque scene. Travelling from the border into Somerset, after descending one of the steepest hills in England, is the village of Porlock with interesting shops and quaint tearooms and a falconry centre at the village of Bossington. The nearby National Trust village of Selworthy is famous for its thatched cottages on the green.

• Lynton & Lynmouth

Further along the Somerset coast is the town of Minehead where you can take a steam train ride on England’s longest heritage railway through 20 miles of coast and glorious countryside. The first stop off the train from Minehead will take you to Dunster station where a short walk will bring you to the medieval village with its ancient buildings and cobbled footpaths, nestled beneath the magnificent Dunster castle and gardens. The Yarn Market Hotel in Dunster is an ideal location for its close proximity to these and many more attractions and with so much to see and do on Exmoor in the Devon and Somerset border area, do come and take a look around you will not be disappointed!

• West Somerset Railway

YARN MARKET HOTEL Situated in the medieval village of Dunster within Exmoor National Park, we offer a warm welcome to all who want to enjoy the magnificent surroundings of Exmoor and West Somerset. • 28 ensuite bedrooms • Pets welcome • Walkers & cyclists welcome • Boot & drying room • Restaurant open every evening from 5.30pm • Special interest breaks for artists, singers and musicians • Groups welcome
