Culture & Heritage
The Heart of Devon is home to some of the UK’s most important historic towns, villages, monuments and conservation areas. Its rich heritage is evident wherever you go, and spans many millions of years! 250 million years ago – scorching desert conditions led to the formation of the burnt red rocks at what is today Orcombe Point in Exmouth, the start of the Jurassic Coast a UNESCO World Heritage site.
8,000 – 700 BC Devon was one of the first areas of Britain settled after the last ice age. In Dartmoor National Park remains of human habitation date back as far as the Mesolithic period (8,000 – 4,000 BC), and the country’s largest concentration of Bronze Age remains are scattered across the Moor. Standing stones, Bronze and Iron Age hut circles and hillforts are visible in several places. 8

800 BC – 1st Century AD The remains of Iron Age settlements can be seen today across Devon – visit Blackbury Camp, an Iron Age hillfort near Honiton with impressive earthwork ramparts. Today it is an excellent picnic spot, carpeted with a sea of bluebells in spring. AD 55 - 400 The Romans arrive in Exeter. A large part of the wall they built surrounding the city still stands today – follow the City Wall self-guided heritage trail to find out more. AD 909 Devon’s first cathedral is established in Crediton, reputed to be on the site of what is now the imposing Holy Cross Church. 1050 – 1270 The Bishop’s Seat moves from Crediton to Exeter and the Norman Exeter Cathedral is built. 11th Century Devon’s largest castle is built in Okehampton, its ruins are now managed by English Heritage for visitors to explore.

14th Century Documents indicate that Teignmouth was a significant port by the early 14th Century, second in Devon only to Dartmouth.
From the mid 15th Century Topsham’s trade and port was further boosted by the increasing export to the Continent of woollen cloth produced in Exeter and in and around towns such as Tiverton and Cullompton, and the import of other goods in return, including, after the Civil War, of the famous Dutch bricks as ballast.
16th Century Beacons were constructed on the Devon coast to warn of invasion by the Spanish Armada. One of these, Grade II listed Culmstock Beacon high on the Blackdown Hills, is one of the very few still standing today.
18th – 19th Century The Heart of Devon’s elegant seaside resorts became popular holiday destinations. The Regency town of Sidmouth attracted many royal visitors including Princess Victoria. Victorian, Regency and Georgian buildings add to the charm and character of Dawlish and Teignmouth.
Smuggling by sea in East Devon reaches its peak during the Napoleonic Wars (1793 – 1815). Beer and Branscombe are particularly notorious for their histories of smuggling of goods including casks of brandy, tea, tobacco and silk!
21st Century The Heart of Devon’s rich heritage is today celebrated through traditional events, such as Ottery St Mary’s flaming tar barrels on 5 November and the unusual Honiton Hot Pennies Day in July. Wildlife
The Heart of Devon’s landscape is home to a beautiful selection of flowers and wildlife. The area includes two stunning Areas of Outstanding National Beauty (AONBs) and a great selection of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI’s). See below for some of the Heart of Devon’s wildlife sites that are not only important but are incredibly beautiful. The Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs is the most renowned area of landslipping in Britain, also designated a National Nature Reserve. A massive landslip in 1839 has today become a large area covered with woodland and scrub. Because of its isolation, plant and animal communities have developed virtually untouched by man, with interesting species including the wood white butterfly and the nightingale.

The Beer Quarry and Caves is important for its population of eight species of hibernating bat, some of which are very rare, including the Bechstein’s bat and the greater and lesser horseshoe bats. Dawlish Warren is a 500 acre National Nature Reserve at the mouth of the Exe Estuary. An area of international importance for several species of wildfowl and wading birds, including Wigeon, Dark-bellied Brent Geese and other species of wildfowl. If you’re lucky you may see a short-eared Owl, or maybe a Cirl Bunting. The estuary also supports nationally important numbers of wintering Black-tailed Godwit. There is a bird hide that gives excellent views particularly either side of high tide.
Wildlife
The Heart of Devon is home to fascinating wildlife On the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths over 70 breeding bird species have been recorded, including nightjar, hobby and in most years, Dartford Warbler. Among the 21 breeding dragonfly species are the small Red Damselfly, Southern Coenagrion and the Downy Emerald. The waters, foreshore and low-lying land of the Exe Estuary are of international importance for over 10,000 wintering wildfowl and 20,000 waders, plus the largest flock of wintering Avocets in Britain. Parts of the site are managed by the Devon Wildlife Trust, including the Old Sludge Beds, which has good access via a path with boardwalks running through the site. Haldon Forest supports several has rare breeding birds of prey, and has a nationally important population of breeding nightjars. The forest also has rich communities of butterflies.
The Grand Western Canal Country Park meanders through 11 miles of pleasant landscape from Tiverton to Lowdswells, with a wealth of wildlife, including swans and kingfishers which can be seen from the level towpath. Axe Estuary Wetland covers three areas; Seaton Marshes, Colyford Common and Black Hole Marsh. The area contains a freshwater grazing marsh, with scrapes, ditches and ponds that attract considerable wildlife interest. Visit the easily accessible viewing hide to see wildfowl and wading birds in the winter, and dragonflies and butterflies in the summer. Stover Country Park contains over 114 acres of woodland, heathland, grassland, lake marsh and a substantial variety of wildlife, which can be viewed from a bird hide and aerial walkway. Our coast and countryside is just perfect for a number of activities whatever you’re in to, so what are you waiting for? Walking Whether you fancy a short, leisurely stroll or a long distance hike, you will be spoilt for choice in the Heart of Devon. Long distance trails include the Exe Valley Way and East Devon Way, which wind along footpaths, quiet country lanes and villages, or experience a wonderful diversity of scenery along the Two Moors Way. Follow town trails around the Heart of Devon’s historic towns, or join free guided walking tours of Exeter and Topsham. There’s also the fantastic South West Coast Path and 2013 is its 40th anniversary! One of the best ways

There are plenty of well signposted trails through towns and countryside, plus adrenalin pumping off-road trails on Dartmoor and at Haldon Forest Park. Less experienced cyclists can take a leisurely pedal along one of the flat, traffic free routes alongside the River Exe Estuary and Tiverton Canal. Climbing The granite tors of Dartmoor National Park provide plenty of opportunities for climbers, with breathtaking
views from the top! Practice first at Exeter’s Quay Climbing Centre, also home to the UK’s first Clip ‘n’ Climb Centre! Isca Outdoor in Exeter and the Rock Centre in Chudleigh offer tuition in climbing, caving and abseiling for the more adventurous. Bird watching The Heart of Devon’s landscape of estuary marshland, forest, fields and commons make it a haven for birdlife. The Exe Estuary is an internationally important site for winter migrant birds, including the Avocet, Brent Geese and Lapwing. At the mouth of the estuary, Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve is also an area of international importance for wildlife. Public trails, viewing platforms and hides allow visitors to get close to the birds without disturbing them. Yarak Birds of Prey is also a great day out. Exeter Cathedral, at the city’s heart Renowned for its heritage and culture, Exeter is an exciting place to visit all year round. There are over 2,000 years of history to be explored and wherever you go in the city there’s a discovery to be made. Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum, rightfully awarded ‘2012 Museum of the Year’ is a key attraction and a fascinating day out for everyone. The medieval Underground Passages are the only type of their kind open to the public in Britain, and are certainly a way to get a different perspective of the city. Coastal towns
The Heart of Devon coastline – simply spectacular The Heart of Devon is home to some absolutely stunning coastline – a natural draw for visitors to the area due to its range of sandy and pebble beaches, dramatic red cliffs plunging into the sea, and charming towns and villages which sit on the edge waiting to welcome visitors.

Dawlish Warren, Shaldon, Exmouth and Teignmouth are charming towns and reflect back to a pleasant past that’s not quite forgotten. Beer and Branscombe are beautiful little villages and wonderful places to get away from it all.
2013 is the 40th anniversary of the South West Coast Path. This 630 mile trail is a great way to make the most of the Heart of Devon coastline. Also in the Heart of Devon is the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast which runs the length of the East Devon coast. This part of the coastline has a fascinating insight into geology and is an ideal place to hunt for fossils and to go rock pooling.

Beer & Branscombe Beer is a picturesque fishing village with a fascinating past that includes smuggling, quarrying and lace making. A colourful population of fishing boats, fresh fish for sale and mackerel fishing trips speak of Beer’s long fishing heritage. Beer Stone was first quarried by the Romans and was used in the building of 24 cathedrals, including Exeter and St Pauls. Visitors today can take a guided tour of the Beer Quarry Caves. Budleigh Salterton & Dawlish Budleigh Salterton is an elegant seaside town with a beach composed of unique pebbles, carried from Brittany by an ancient river flowing into the Triassic desert around 240 million years ago. Around the headland from Budleigh Salterton is the famous and striking geology of Ladram Bay, with its towering rock stacks and red cliffs plunging into the sea.

Topsham Located four miles from Exeter, the estuary town of Topsham was once a thriving port and shipbuilding centre, and retains a distinctly maritime flavour today. Cullompton & Honiton A peaceful country town set within the tranquil Culm Valley, Cullompton has many fine Georgian and Tudor buildings, and one of the UK’s most magnificent churches. Ottery St Mary & Tiverton Set in the beautiful Otter Valley, Ottery St Mary is one of the south west’s oldest towns and so has many historical buildings and traditions. Take the train Why not travel in comfort by train, a family-friendly option with main-line stations located at Tiverton, Honiton and Exeter. Companies operating in the area are First Great Western, Cross Country Trains and South West Trains. Once you are in the area, why not make use of the regular local train services, which run from all over the South West to Exeter.
