Tenby and Cadley Island

“ My very first job as a 16-year old deckhand ferrying holiday makers from Tenby across to Caldey Island was the best I ever had”

TENBY WAS AWARDED SILVER IN THE BEST COASTAL RESORT CATEGORY AT THE BRITISH TOURISM AWARDS IN 2014.

MY PEMBROKESHIRE PAUL GOGARTY

OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GLOBETROT THE WORLD WRITING TRAVEL FEATURES FOR NATIONAL NEWSPAPERS AND A HOST OF MAGAZINES. For three years, whilst Jill Dando was at the helm, I also regularly reported for BBC1’s Holiday programme in exotic destinations. A pretty lucky boy then as far as earning a living goes I hear you say and you’d be absolutely right. And so why is it that I still think my very first job as a 16-year old deckhand ferrying holidaymakers from Tenby across to Caldey Island was the best I ever had? And why is it that having visited some of the world’s most fabled coastlines - I still haven’t discovered anywhere that can quite eclipse the Pembrokeshire coast. Unlike other British national parks bordering the sea, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is unique in being almost entirely coastal. Alongside the Park, the National Trust, which owns significant stretches of the coastline, is also responsible for preserving its heritage and beauty.

PEMBROKESHIRE COAST PATH FOR A COUNTY THAT STRETCHES JUST 25 MILES FROM NORTH TO SOUTH, THE PEMBROKESHIRE COAST PATH MEANDERS FOR AN IMPRESSIVE 186 MILES FROM AMROTH TO ST DOGMAELS. The dramatic scenery and the variety of landscapes make it a fascinating stretch to walk, taking in red sandstone bays, craggy volcanic headlands, sheer limestone cliffs and stunning glacial valleys. While much of the path follows the cliff top, it does occasionally drop down to a beach or road and passes through a number of towns and villages. It also connects to the Wales Coast Path, the first coastal path to outline an entire country. With an excellent year-round coastal bus service designed especially for walkers, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is open to explore at your leisure.

TOP TIPS

Coastal Bus Services www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/coastbus Wales Coast Path www.walescoastpath.gov.uk

Hop on the Coastal Bus and walk back. There are no timetable worries that way.

If the Coastal Bus normally goes past your accommodation, hail it. It’ll stop if it’s safe to do so.

Use the buses to link several Coast Path stages from the same base and avoid having to transfer luggage.

A HAVEN FOR WILDLIFE WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF ANIMAL LIFE, PEMBROKESHIRE IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR A CHANCE ENCOUNTER WITH WILD DOLPHINS, PORPOISES AND WHALES.

In recent years huge ‘super-pods’ of common dolphins have been spotted off the coast, while resident populations of bottlenose dolphins and porpoises can be frequently seen from April to October.

Risso’s dolphins, plankton-feeding basking sharks, humpback, fin, and minke whales, as well as the occasional orca, are also drawn to these nutrient rich waters. A third of the world’s population of grey seals can be found around the Pembrokeshire coast. Visit between September and November, to see pups born on isolated beaches. In spring and summer huge populations of nesting Puffins, Gannets, Guillemots, Razorbills and Manx Shearwaters can be seen on our five islands of Skomer, Skokholm, Grassholm, Ramsey and Caldey.

May and June offer the best opportunity to see Puffins. Shearwaters return to their burrows under cover of darkness during July and August. August is also the best time to see Gannets, who are in residence on Grassholm until the end of the month. In September and October large numbers of migrating seabirds can be spotted travelling along the coast.

DEFENCE OF THE REALM THE CASTLES OF PICTON, PEMBROKE, CAREW AND MANORBIER, AS WELL AS THE REMAINS OF TENBY CASTLE, DATE BACK TO THE NORMAN ERA. A string of smaller castles between Amroth and Roch, known as the Landsker Line, were constructed as a buffer zone between the Normans and the Welsh Lords in north Pembrokeshire. Over the course of time Cardigan, Cilgerran and Nevern castles were claimed and lost many times. At the Iron Age Hill Fort of Castell Henllys you will find round houses that are exact replicas of those located on the same spot 2000 years ago. A visit to this extraordinary attraction gives a tantalising glimpse of Celtic life. Other notable places to visit are the numerous Napoleonic era forts dotted around the Haven Waterway, a couple of which can be reached on the Coast Path, and the Carew Airfield Control Tower, which has been carefully reconstructed to look just as it would have in World War 2.

FIVE THOUSAND YEARS IN THE MAKING As a hugely important Celtic base, its strong spiritual links with Stonehenge are now a well known fact, most notably as spotted dolerite ‘bluestones’ from the Preseli Hills were used in the construction of Stonehenge’s second phase in 3,000BC. It is thought that around 80 of these 3 to 4 tonnes megaliths were transported on a 200-mile journey, a truly staggering achievement.

MAKING THE GRADE A GUIDE TO QUALITY ASSURANCE All the accommodation featured in this publication has been independently assessed so you can make your choice in confidence, knowing that each place to stay has been given a rating according to the quality and facilities on offer. These ratings mean that you can be sure of standards and choose the accommodation that’s just right for you. Visit Wales/AA are the only checking agents in Wales, checking out over 5,000 places.

WHAT DO OUR STAR RATINGS MEAN? Visit Wales STARS are evidence of quality. They range from one to five stars and are a reliable indication of the services and facilities you can expect in accommodation which includes hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfast, farm accommodation, hostel/hostel type accommodation, self-catering cottages and apartments and caravan holiday home and touring/camping parks. Alternative Accommodation such as yurts, tipis and tree houses are also checked to ensure that they meet minimum standards. Cleanliness is the most crucial element of any assessment and minimum standards, particularly at the higher star ratings reflect consumer expectations. All accommodation grades are based on a set of common quality standards agreed by Visit Wales, Visit England, Visit Scotland, Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the AA.

DOES A LOWER STAR RATING EQUAL LESS QUALITY? Many lower star rated accommodations may still offer high quality but do not meet all of the facility and service expectations for the higher star ratings. Is it particularly important not to compare Guest Accommodation ratings against Hotel ratings as different criteria are used when assessing. The advice is to always check with an establishment before booking to check that the accommodation offers the services and facilities that meet your needs – they will only be too pleased to help. Also look out for that extra-special property that has been awarded Visit Wales’ Gold Award, given for exceptional standards of hospitality, comfort and food in serviced accommodation. Occasionally, it has not been possible to visit the accommodation prior to publication. In these instances, the property is marked as ‘Awaiting Grading’.Some accommodation operators have chosen not to be star rated, but they have been checked out to ensure that they provide an acceptable level of services and facilities appropriate to their type of business. They are identified as either ‘Verified’ or ‘Listed’. 32

A WARM WELSH WELCOME Watch out for this sign as these places have achieved a Croeso Award in recognition of their exceptional Warm Welsh Welcome.

VISITOR ATTRACTIONS Look out for the Visit Wales Quality marque. This only gets awarded to attractions that have been independently assessed against the national standards of the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme to ensure that all areas important to your visit are of the best standard.

ACCOMMODATING VISITORS WITH DISABILITIES All Visit Wales graded properties have an Access Statement. This statement tells visitors in a clear, accurate and honest way how the property can meet their particular needs. Three symbols have been introduced to help visitors with physical impairments find the Access Statements of most relevance to them. Accommodation providers have selected the one symbol which best describes the improvements that they have made to their properties.

LOOK OUT FOR THESE SYMBOLS:

Access improved for mobility impaired people

Access improved for visually impaired people

Access improved for hearing impaired people

The advice is to always check with an establishment before booking to check that the accommodation offers the services and facilities that meet your needs.

PLEASE NOTE: All gradings and awards were correct at the time of going to press. Occasionally, it may not have been possible to undertake a grading. This situation is clearly identified by ‘Awaiting Grading’ appearing within the advertisement/entry. Grading assessments are on-going and improvements made by establishments may have resulted in a revision since publication. Please check when booking. Further information on gradings and awards is available from Visit Wales, Welsh Assembly Government, Rhodfa Padarn, Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion SY23 3UR Tel: 0845 010 8020 email: quality.tourism@wales.gsi.gov.uk www.wales.gov.uk/tourism

ANY PROBLEMS? In the unfortunate event that you do encounter problems with your chosen accommodation, please refer to www.wales.gov. uk/tourism for further guidance.
