Words from CARTIF CEO
Dr. José Ramón Perán GonzálezThis is a truly historic milestone, since we have been regional leaders in the four indicators. Our satisfaction is even greater because the aforementioned data rank CARTIF eighth among Spanish technology centres according to the economic return achieved. Only some Basque and Catalan technological centres are ahead of us, but they benefit from various aids that can reach between 40 and 50% of their budget, a situation radically different from what we have in our region.
CARTIF, faithful to its founding spirit, has continued to grow and transfer technology to companies, especially those of Castilla y León. We have also tried, sometimes successfully, to be accompanied by those mentioned companies in European projects. This, regardless of the value of the financial aid, allows them to remain at the leading edge of the technologies recommended by the European Commission and to establish relationships with companies and institutions in other countries.

Industrial solutions
If there is anything that defines CARTIF’s activity is our ability to provide end customers ready-to-use industrial solutions. The efficient manufacturing and the transition towards the Factory of the Future are at the core of our fundamental objectives. To achieve them, we rely on our research lines continuously updated, and according the market needs. These research lines include flexible manufacturing, intelligent and efficient manufacturing processes and collaborative robotics and advanced automation, among others. In addition to this research work, we also keep track of the needed profitability four our customers so they maintain their market position.
Energy and environment
We have 18 years’ experience in technologies, R&D projects and developments for the companies that concern to all the stakeholders in the Energy and Environment sector. We were pioneer in renewable energies and biofuels research in Spain and now, we have one of the most prepared research group in Energy all over Europe.
Construction and infraestructures
In order to respond to the needs of the market, at CARTIF we have been developing a research line for years that integrates the concepts of Sustainable and Intelligent Construction. In it, the teams of integration of renewable building work, smart home and those seeking new solutions to the rehabilitation of buildings, with special impact on those who are part of the Artistic and Cultural Heritage. All this is integrated, in addition, in the global concept of urban regeneration (Smart City). The same criterion is applied in the study of the behaviour of infrastructures, logistics and transport, a field in which we stand out for our intelligent maintenance software and for the development of new materials with innovative properties.
Agro food
The concern of modern society to control their health through food makes essential an exhaustive control of the production processes of food, which ensures maximum quality and safety.
At CARTIF, we have been providing solutions to the industry and consumers for more than 20 years, attending to their needs. To achieve this, we optimize production processes, develop new products and value agrofood residues, in addition to performing physicalchemical, microbiological and sensory analyses.
Health and quality of life
From CARTIF, we are committed to one of the greatest challenges of the future: improving the quality of life of people. For this reason, we work to provide health professionals with the tools that engineering provides as an aid for research, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and for the improvement of the technological systems currently used in the various areas of health. We work on projects about active aging within the philosophy of the 'silver economy'. Our objectives: to improve the health and quality of life of the elderly citizens; maintain the long-term sustainability and efficiency of health and social care systems; and improve the competitiveness of the industry in this sector.
Of the more than 100 projects in which we have worked during 2017, we have selected some of the most representative in order to show our capabilities in the different areas of research and economic sectors in which our teams develop their activity.
IOTEC
Development of technological capabilities for the industrial application of the Internet of Things iotec.usal.es
The IOTEC project works on the development of a network of scientific and technological actors to promote innovation in the field of Internet of Things research (IoT)
The objectives of this network are:
The expected results at the end of the four years of work are:
MAtchUP
Urban planning to get smarter and cleaner cities
The objective of this European project is to strengthen urban planning processes by consolidating the benefits of large-scale demonstration projects that develop innovative technologies in the energy, mobility and ICT sectors
These actions are:
This project, led by CARTIF, works on the development of a methodology and a group of demonstration projects in the field of Nature-Based Solutions (Nature Based Solutions)
Among the Nature Based Solutions, also known as 'green infrastructures' or 'blue infrastructures’ will be developed:
SHCITY
Management and conservation of historical urban centres through the application of technology
The SHCity project (Smart Heritage City) is working on the development of a system that will allow online control, intelligent management and preventive conservation of a set of buildings and heritage elements, based on the use of new technologies and the installation of wireless sensors. In addition, it will include an application designed to improve the control of tourist visits
ESMIMET
Take advantage of strategic resources in metal mining
The objective of this project is to generate a network of scientific-technical knowledge and R&D&I around the development of metal mining capabilities of the border strip between the regions of North and Central Portugal and Castilla y León
The expected results of the project are:
