ARE YOU READY FOR UNIVERSAL CREDIT? Universal Credit is a new benefit to support you if you’re working and on a low income or if you’re out of work. NB – Universal Credit only affects you if you are working age. What is Universal Credit? Universal Credit is a single monthly payment for people in or out of work. It replaces some of the benefits and tax credits that you might be getting now:

HOUSING BENEFIT

CHILD TAX CREDIT

WORKING TAX CREDIT

INCOME-BASED JOBSEEKER’S ALLOWANCE

INCOME SUPPORT

INCOME-RELATED EMPLOYMENT AND SUPPORT ALLOWANCE

It can take at least 5 weeks to get your first payment so try and put some money aside so you’re not left struggling. 2

www.cartreficonwy.org

When could it affect you? Universal Credit will affect more people in the County of Conwy from April 2018. If you receive benefits and your circumstances change, or if you are a new claimant, you will be asked to claim Universal Credit. A change of circumstances could be: • You are found fit for work so Employment and Support Allowance stops • Relationship starts or ends • Bereavement • Change in working hours • Loss of job • Move from Job Seekers to Income Support when your child is born • Becoming a carer • You are a lone parent and your youngest child turns 5 • If you become sick and unable to work

Things you need to know • Universal Credit is paid monthly in arrears so it will take at least 5 weeks after you make your claim to get your first payment. • If you get help with your rent, this will be included in your monthly payment – you’ll then pay us directly. • You have to make your claim and stay in touch online. • You must have a bank account in order to receive Universal Credit.

• If you live with someone as a couple and you are both entitled to claim Universal Credit, you will get one monthly joint payment paid into a single bank account. • There are no limits on how many hours a week you can work if you’re claiming Universal Credit. Instead, the amount you get will gradually reduce as you earn more, so you won’t lose all your benefits at once.

DON’T LET CUCKOOING TAKE OVER OUR COMMUNITY NESTS

Cuckooing is real and happening around us. It is a huge threat to where we live for: • you, • your children, • your family and friends, • everyone! What is Cuckooing? Gang members go to a new location away from where they live and where they know there’s the potential to run a profitable drug market. They set up a form of business franchise to market their product using a single named telephone number or ‘line’. They then find new bases (homes) where they can rest, hide, and store and distribute drugs, weapons and money. They gain and secure entry into homes through bullying, violence and taking advantage of vulnerable people. Local children and vulnerable adults are often used as ‘runners’, or forced labour.

What to look out for • An increase in the number of comings and goings, including people you haven’t seen before • There might be new vehicles outside the property • An increase in anti-social behaviour in and around the property • Unknown people with keys to the property What to do if you suspect it’s happening where you live Protect your children, your family and friends, and the area you live in by telling someone. Contact Cartrefi Conwy, local Police or other support agencies.

T A Y A S R HAVE YOU NWY O C I F E R T R A C Taking part in tenant consultations is a quick and easy way to get your voice heard. Here at Cartrefi Conwy we run regular consultations to find out what tenants think about our services. You can take part in consultations online, by post and telephone surveys or at many different events. What you say does make a difference and changes things for the better. Last Summer we asked tenants what they thought about having a member of Cartrefi Conwy Customer Services team based in the Conwy Housing Solutions office in Colwyn Bay. We talked about the use of this service and the fact that most people who came into the office were visiting about Conwy Housing Solutions services and not Cartrefi Conwy. With this in mind, between May and June last year the Customer Service team member moved from Conwy Housing Solutions to work from our call centre instead, to see what happened. 14

www.cartreficonwy.org

Here’s what happened

• We got more calls to the Customer Services call centre (0300 124 0040 number) • The number of calls answered within 30 seconds increased from 21.80% to 53%

• The number of calls waiting over 2 minutes decreased from

28.2% to 8.8%

• The average time to answer calls reduced from 118 seconds to 45 seconds

• The longest wait reduced from

11:20 minutes to 05:58 minutes

Why? Because there was an extra staff member in the call centre. We were really happy with these results so we asked tenants if we could keep this person in the call centre. This would mean no Cartrefi Conwy Customer Services staff in the Colwyn Bay office but an improved service on the 0300 number. 78% of tenants said that they would be happy for us to do this. So that’s what we have done and so far it is working really well.

REPAIRS SATISFACTION SURVEY We wanted to know what tenants thought about the survey that we ask tenants to complete after a repair at their property. We asked tenants how they felt about: • The number of questions in the survey • The relevance of the questions in the survey • The amount of data collected by Cartrefi Conwy through the survey There was a bit of a mixed response from this consultation. Our tradespeople also told us that tenants in general are fed up of having to answer so many questions. So now we’re looking at the questions we ask and how we can use a smaller set of questions in the future. Thank you to everyone who took part in the consultations. And don’t forget you could win £25 Love 2 Shop vouchers if you take part in future consultation.

st Love 2 Shop la r ou of r ne in w e th s a Marie Peck w time for Christmas. in st ju ed iv ce re e sh ch vouchers, whi vouchers. D O O G S A Y L N O IS A PLACE IT IN E L P O E P E H T S A With local authorities being hit by more cuts and having to deliver the same services for less the saying ‘A place is only as good as the people in it’ is becoming more and more meaningful. Next time you think about the place where you live and have a reason not to join in to make it better why not think the opposite…

Thank you so much to everyone who attended a Community Litter Pick at Tre Cwm on an icy cold day in late February to help clean up the area.

It’s great news that Parc Peuwlys Go Green Group has signed the lease for a piece of land to transform into a community garden. We look forward to following their progress and share their news over the coming months. Pictured are members of the group getting rotavator training. They will be using a rotavotr to speed up cultivating their land once it is cleared. 16

We think Gwilym and Janyne Jones from Cerrigydrudion are just marvellous. Just as the January blues blow in these Cartrefi Conwy tenants organised an afternoon tea for their community. Other local volunteers helped them serve up afternoon tea to over 100 local residents. They also arranged the raffle prizes and entertainment – including a good old singalong with a local musician and the showing of a local movie featuring local stars.

We loved reading about Llanfairfechan couple Pedro and Sarah Griffiths who have turned around an issue that was causing bitterness in their community for dog walkers. They made their own dog poo bins and by getting community volunteers to empty them it now means Glan y Môr Elias nature reserve is an area for both dog walkers and others to enjoy together.
