Parc Peulwys Celebration In the last newsletter we reported on the Ysgol Tan y Marian school trip to the Aber Quarry to see the stone that will highlight the entrance to Parc Peulwys. As you can see from the photo that stone is now in place and the environmental work on Parc Peulwys is complete. Following 8 months of intense work to redesign the open spaces on the estate, the moment of celebration came at the end of May. All residents were treated to a day of fun to say thanks for their patience and to officially open ‘Parc Peulwys.’ The day ended with a hog roast and live band on the school field. The improvements which included the reconfiguration of roads, new paths, hundreds of new flowering shrubs and trees, a human sundial, a stone compass/seating area and a grand entrance have been enthusiastically welcomed by the residents. The work has reinvigorated the Go Green Association, which have established growing plots and are planning other environmental projects. They are keen to involve everyone in the area that wants to lend a hand to keeping the ‘Parc’ in Peulwys. Cartrefi Conwy is now in the final stages of deciding the next area that will benefit from large scale environmental improvements, and this will have been announced at the Family Day on 27 August.

PEULWYS GO GREEN GROUP The Peulwys Go Green Association has been active for almost six years, planning the acquisition of land locally from Cartrefi Conwy; who have been very supportive of the Association's aims to develop a Community garden and growing plots with a community beehive. Along with Cartrefi Conwy we also work in partnership with City Farms and gardens, Groundworks and the Peulwys and District Partnership Board. Recently due to a hold up in the granting of the lease on the intended land, we have been granted use of land at the local junior school Ysgol Tan Y Marian, to facilitate a growing season, for community members to gain access to small plots of land in which they can grow vegetables and flowers. As we are on school land, we facilitate both the junior school and the infant school Ysgol Penmaenrhos, so that the children can grow vegetables from seeds to harvesting the vegetables at the end of the growing season. Our vision in the long term is a large social hub with a community garden and access to growing plots for the local community to use, offering a social enterprise that in turn will offer training and volunteering opportunities to the local community right on our doorstep.

Kinmel Bay Youth Space On the 16th July at 6.30pm Kinmel Bay Youth Space promoted a fantastic family show Circo Rum Ba Ba. The event was funded and delivered by the Arts Council for Wales and Noson Allan night out scheme. Over 50 tenants and residents thoroughly enjoyed the show whereby they were treated to a spectacular show of comedy, acrobats and cake throwing out of a giant skirt!!! Lots of audience participation involved too. The show took place on a beautiful summer evening on Chester Avenue Park with a BBQ and refreshments stall arranged by Collette Gaskell from the Youth Service. Fun and laughter could be heard all over the estate. Children involved were each presented with a certificate of achievement. Vicky Welsman, Community House Manager, Cartrefi Conwy would like to express her sincere thanks to everyone involved for organising this fantastic event.

Parc Peulwys attracts classroom of overseas visitors Students who used their own gardens as the classroom during a horticultural course attracted a classroom of overseas delegates to view the blooming marvellous results of their labour. Nineteen delegates from 7 European countries arrived in Llandudno on a 3 day visit as part of the Grundtvig Partnership Project funded by the European Union. The Delegates were from national and local organisations from Lithuania, Hungary, Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland, Finland and the Czech Republic. This visit is part of a Grundtvig Partnership project which NIACE Cymru coordinated. Programme Manager Kay Smith of NIACE Cymru said: “We are fortunate that we have some excellent provision in this area to showcase outreach and community based project, family & work place learning and effective partnerships. The delegates met up with tenants in Parc Peulwys who had enrolled on the course as part of the £1.1 million environmental scheme at Parc Peulwys. The opportunity to gain qualifications in their own community led to one tenant gaining permanent employment with the landscaping contractor who was working on the Parc Peulwys scheme. Steve McLeod was taken on after he enrolled on a horticulture course and put in hours of unpaid voluntary work. He said: “I moved here to the Peulwys estate with my wife, Morwenna, and daughter Katlin, six, from Liverpool about four years ago. Morwenna is Welsh while I’m from Bootle. “I’d been unemployed for quite a while and had applied for hundreds, or even thousands, of jobs. I sent so many CV’s out it was ridiculous. “Then, I enrolled on the horticulture course that was being run by Cartrefi Conwy and really enjoyed it. I loved the work and really wanted to find a full-time job doing landscaping and other ground works. “After we started work on the nature trail I was offered a full-time job with Brenig Construction. Another tenant Phyllis Higgins, 69, signed up for the horticulture course and was delighted when tutor Chris Joynson agreed that she, and her fellow students, should address problems in her garden as part of their coursework. Phyllis, who has been a Peulwys tenant for more than 25 years and is a retired Bodelwyddan Hospital Domestic Supervisor, said: “I signed up for the course as my husband, Brian, passed away. He was so ill and I never left his side. “The problem was my garden just became overgrown, I was really ashamed of it but I couldn’t get out sorting it out as Brian needed me with him constantly. “After he passed away I set about cutting the garden back and tried to sort it out. Then a leaflet dropped through the door explaining about the horticultural course and I thought it was a really good idea.” She added: “I’ve learnt so much and didn’t realise how little I knew when it came to plants, soil and weeds. But perhaps the best thing is I’ve made a new friend which is brilliant. Ruth a visiting delegate from Switzerland said: “Thanks very much for sharing your experience with us. Great work” Another delegate from Finland said: “It was so nice to see you making beautiful gardens and surroundings. Beauty gives us more energy and happiness. Great work.

Thousands of Mosaic pieces turn School logo into stunning masterpiece Hot on the heels of winning a national award on a knitting project, a group of youngsters from a Kinmel Bay housing estate have once again turned to older people for help, this time to produce a mosaic masterpiece. Ten pupils of Ysgol Maes Owen together with ten members of the craft group at the Chester Avenue Community House worked for ten weeks, meeting every Wednesday at an after school club, to produce a 5 Ft. circular mosaic of the school logo.

Vicky Welsman, Cartrefi Conwy’s Chester Avenue Community House Development Manager praised the commitment of the craft group and schoolchildren who had to individually hand pick thousands of pieces from Mosaic tiles. She praised Craft Group member Jo O’Keeffe and said: “Jo was not only fantastic creatively but just brilliant helping me coordinate everything. “This has been another fantastic community partnership project and wouldn’t have been possible without all involved working together.

With many of the thousands of pieces sparkling in the summer sunshine and taking pride of place on the prominent school chimney stack the Mosaic was proudly unveiled to the community on Thursday 17th July.

“I’d especially like to thank Communities First who gave £300 from their ‘Learning Theme’ grant, local builders merchant, Roger Jones who supplied the materials for free and local builders, K& C Construction who installed the Mosaic.

It was a double celebration on the day for retired engineer Ed O’Keeffe who celebrated his 70th birthday. Ed was the draftsman who hand drew, on his lounge floor, the 5 ft. Mosaic template from a 5cm image of Ysgol Maes Owen’s school logo.

Aled Owen Site Manager of K&C Construction said: It was good to be involved and help out installing the Mosaic. Many pupils attending this school live in one of our nearby developments and we are active in supporting and helping out in the communities we build in.

Jacqueline Richmond, Mayor of Towyn and Kinmel Bay said: “What a great pleasure to see such a brilliant project in the local community.

The head teacher of Ysgol Maes Owen, Catrin Foulkes said: “It’s been fantastic once more to see a range of ages working together. The children’s self-esteem has been boosted as they have now seen the fruits of their labour.”

“The logo will stand proud for all to see and this is a true statement that intergenerational groups are working well for young and old in our Community. Everyone involved should be proud.” When asked by the head teacher what they’d enjoyed most about the project it was a mix of enthusiastic responses ranging from how colourful and messy the project had been through to the challenge of matching the thousands of tiny pieces to the school logo design.

“I’m really pleased with the work we have done with Cartrefi Conwy and their commitment to building community and agency links. “Once again the work our children have done with the Chester Avenue Community House volunteers has been fabulous and the only question now is what’s next?”

Communal Entrance improvements Is the communal entrance to your flat looking tired and dreary? Not for long! We have just started a programme of improvements to the communal entrance areas to many of our blocks of flats. This work could include new flooring, decoration, and in some places the replacement of balustrades. Over the coming months we will be coming to relevant blocks of flats in Colwyn Bay and Old Colwyn, Abergele, Rhos on Sea, Llandudno and Penmaenmawr. Before any work is started you will be contacted by G Purchase’s Tenant Liaison Officer who will consult on the colour schemes and flooring choices as well as telling you how the work will affect you.

Is there an open space in your neighbourhood that lets the whole area down? Have you and your neighbours talked about making some changes to the way your neighbourhood looks? Enviro SOS could be the solution. Over 40 projects costing over £100,000 have been approved over the last 3 years that have made positive changes to the open spaces in our Reminder neighbourhoods. These projects have ranged from creating a meeting area on a sheltered emergency SMS service scheme to creating communal spaces for the whole community to investing in school projects lets deaf, hard of hearing and that are near our housing estates. If you think Enviro SOS might be just the thing to save the speech-impaired people in the UK day- then ring Cartrefi Conwy and request the simple application form and information sheet. Once we receive this send an SMS text message to the UK information, we will research your proposal with you and a tenant panel. If your project is given the ‘thumbs up’ 999 service. You need to register your you then have one more small step which is to present your idea along with all the other proposers at a tenant eventwhere all the people present will vote on each project. So the decision making power is literally put into tenants mobile phone before using service. Visit hands to decide which projects get the money. Any one project can be allocated up to £4,000, and with £50k up for http://www.emergencysms.org.uk grabs- there will be plenty of winners. Don’t miss this chance to bring some Enviro SOS to your neighbourhood. Deadline for submission of applications is Friday, 10th October 2014.

Photo competition Put your photographic skills to the test! As part of our planned improvements to the communal entrances to many of our blocks of flats, we are looking for budding photographers to capture their local landscapes or landmarks- which may in turn decorate these entrances in the relevant area. To be part of the competition, send your photos to communications@cartreficonwy.org and if your photo or photos are chosen then you will not only grace the entrance areas for years to come, but you will also receive a prize voucher.

Bryn Eglwys & Maes Glas environmental improvements Overgrown communal spaces, wheelie bins scattered everywhere, no drying lines and no place to sit out and enjoy the sunshine. These are some of the comments we had from tenants in Bryn Eglwys and Maes Glas in Rhos on Sea. Following a period of consultation, a programme of environmental improvements was put together for the area which tried to deal with some of these issues. In total this involved seven new wheelie bin enclosures and improvements to 3 communal gardens- which included levelling of the land, erection of fencing and gates, and drying lines. We are always looking for opportunities to improve other green spaces and how these areas are used- so if you have an idea- either consider the Enviro SOS scheme- or approach your Neighbourhood Coordinator.

Marl Crescent Cruisers thing to do was run away, back home to Liverpool. Luckily, I met a lovely couple on the road from Birkenhead who agreed to take me with them but as it was late when we arrived I had to stay overnight. By the time I’d travelled back to Liverpool from Birkenhead the next day my mum was beside herself with worry as she’d had already found out that I was missing.

With the sun splitting the heavens and their gardens in a ray of colourful blooms we caught up with some lovely ladies at their homes in heart of Llandudno Junction. Lillian ?, Yvonne Cox and Iona Roberts from Marl Crescent bungalows had invited us round to chat about ‘Marl Crescent Cruisers’, a club they and fellow residents have recently set up with the help of the Cartrefi Conwy start up grant. “The main aim of setting up the club was for social reasons really and for funds to get transport to go out for a day together for afternoon tea. Lilian is less mobile than some of us but being part of the club means she won’t feel left out or miss the chance to catch up with us over a cup of tea plus we all love to hear her stories especially from the war” 83 years young Lillian met her late husband when they were both in the RAF has lived at the bungalows for 14 years. She agreed how she likes to reminisce especially about the war years. Lillian’s childhood years were in spent in Liverpool and she was evacuated 3 times during the war and giggled as she told us all about her last evacuation and the turmoil she had caused.

That was it for my mum; she’d had enough of evacuations and immediately sent for my two sisters to return home to Liverpool to be with her and my baby brother for the rest of the war years.” The Marl Crescent Cruisers look forward to making the most of the summer months and are busy planning coffee mornings with some brica-brac stalls to raise funds for the club’s days out during the autumn and winter months.

Get ready to celebrate! Save the date in your diary for our Older Persons Day – 1st October 2014 at Kinmel Manor, Abergele from 11am until 5pm. Don’t miss out!

SIMPLY THE BEST IN PEN Simply the best results for tenant Tina Turner who was over the moon when she told us all about her Bryn Difyr group’s success in the local ‘Pen in Bloom’ competition. “It was the first time we had entered the competition and were really amazed at winning a 1st and two, 2nds for our entries, something we never expected. “We were fortunate to receive £840 from the Community Chest grant in April, the first time we applied, and have spent £500 of that on hanging baskets, plant seeds and soil, which have all bloomed absolutely beautiful. It really is brilliant and makes the place look really nice. It was a lot of hard work but well worth it and we plan to use the rest of the money we received to plan some residents’ trips out together. Now that we’ve been so successful we plan to apply for different funding to maintain and keep the place looking great.” For more info on Cartrefi Conwy grants including the Start-up and Community Chest grant contact the Communications Team on 01745 335345 or email communications@catreficonwy.org

“Soaked to the skin after jumping in a big puddle on the way back to my evacuee’s home and thinking I’d be in big trouble I decided the best

Lisa Jones, Mike Thomas and Linda Holmes work to help tenants improve their financial situation where possible, and the service is completely free to Cartrefi tenants. A food co-op is a simple way of buying fresh fruit and vegetables in your community whilst supporting a local business. Food co-ops are run weekly by volunteers from a community venue such as a school, community centre or work place. All the produce supplied through the food co-ops comes from local suppliers who select fresh fruit and vegetables according to the season, availability and value. You go along to the food co-op, order your bags, pay and then collect your fresh produce the following week. There are around 300 community food co-ops up and running already in Wales. As well as helping you eat more healthily you can save money by using your local food co-op. As well as selling fruit and vegetables, many also offer additional produce such as eggs. Many are linked to other community activities. Log on to www.foodcoopswales.org.uk to find food co-ops in your local areas.

DO YOU OWN A DOG THAT ISN’T MICRO CHIPPED? You may have read or heard the many horror stories of dogs being stolen from people’s gardens. Unfortunately this crime is becoming more common place and isn’t just confined to big cities. Many types of dogs are being stolen and we shouldn’t assume that it won’t happen to us because we own a ‘mongrel’ dog and not a pure breed. Please ensure that your dog is micro chipped. This way if your dog is stolen or lost it can be identified by the chip and returned to you sooner rather than later. Having to foot the bill of kennels for your dog whilst the authorities are trying to trace the owner will be expensive. From March 2015 in Wales and April 2016 in England ALL dogs must be micro chipped. If you are unable to afford to pay for this you may qualify for free micro chipping. If you are able to access the internet please log on to www.chipmydog.org.uk and you will be able to find out participating veterinary surgeries in your area. Tenants! Have your say

Voices@CartrefiConwy

Plans to improve the way tenants and residents can get involved at Catrefi Conwy were approved on Thursday 14th August 2014 by tenants attending an extraordinary general meeting of the Cartrefi Conwy Tenants’ Forum.

• taking up formal training such as food hygiene, computer, horticulture and photography courses,

For many months and with independent support from TPAS Cymru (the Tenant Participation Advisory Service), members of the Tenants’ Forum Management Committee together with Board Members and Cartrefi Conwy staff and have been exploring ways of improving involvement opportunities.

Who? Involvement opportunities are open to all those living in Cartrefi Conwy homes – not just those named on the Tenancy Agreement – and we also welcome views from other residents and agencies. If you feel you need additional support to get your views across or get involved you can bring someone with you, such as a friend, carer or other family member.

The changes will move away from a formal structure and related processes, which will be replaced by a more flexible framework and Terms of Reference to be branded ‘Voices@Cartrefi Conwy’. The new ‘Voices@Cartrefi Conwy’ framework is aimed at ensuring greater representation and accessibility across a wide range of community engagement and tenant involvement activities at Cartrefi Conwy. Activities linked to Community Action, Service Improvement and Personal Development will be promoted under the title ‘Voices@CartrefiConwy’ to encourage more people to share their views and access information about matters related to the homes and services Cartrefi Conwy provides to its tenants and the wider community throughout Conwy. Cartrefi Conwy’s Community Governance Coordinator Laura Thomas said: “It is important tenants exercise their right to influence services. We believe the new Voices@CartrefiConwy framework will make it much easier for our tenants to do just that. “We want more tenants to feel they can have a say, that their views are important and can make a difference. “We hope that providing greater clarity about the engagement opportunities available for our tenants and others in the wider community will encourage greater participation and a more co-operative and inclusive approach whereby leaseholders, staff, residents and supporting agencies and networks can work better together in our communities to influence, shape and improve our services for the benefit of all.” David Lloyd Director of TPAS Cmyru officiated over the vote and confirmed the proposed changes were carried. He said: “My colleagues and I at the North Wales office of TPAS Cymru have enjoyed being involved with Cartrefi Conwy tenants and staff since the Transfer. It’s good practice to periodically review your approach to community engagement and tenant involvement, and the decisions taken by the tenants tonight are aimed at building on the achievements so far and helping to deliver positive outcomes for tenants and the communities into the future. The challenges faced and the steps being taken here at Cartrefi Conwy to help make involvement more inclusive and accessible are consistent with what we are seeing across the sector, both in Wales and the rest of the UK. Your tenants are to be commended for the commitment they have given in coming this far and I look forward to continuing our relationship with you all in the future”. Some tenants are already familiar with the opportunities offered by Cartrefi Conwy to get involved and have benefitted from participation by; • gaining greater understanding about the services provided by Cartrefi Conwy • being more confident about raising concerns or complaints, which ensures they are addressed through the right channels

8

• making new friends and increasing their personal confidence from just being involved The new approach recognises that individuals choose to engage in a variety of ways to suit their individual circumstances, interests and preferences. To help you decide if you want to get involved, and then to help you if you do;

What? We’ll publish a menu of opportunities with a calendar of activities and make the purpose of the activities clearer, to help you understand what you could be doing and what can be achieved. Where? We’ll be clearer about where activities or events will be taking place; for example In the Home, somewhere in your Local Area, or somewhere that you may need to Travel a little distance to. arrangements and transport costs.

We can even assist you with travel

How much time? We’ll be clearer about how long we expect a particular activity to last and try and help you find activities to get involved in which fit with the amount of time you feel able to give. To find out more about the opportunities to get involved at Cartrefi Conwy; Phone: 0300 124 0040 and ask to speak to Laura Thomas.
