Dear Reader, Casa Mexico and Tu Espacio would like to extend our gratitude to all those of you involved at the Third edition of the Latin American Art Festival 2020 that took place from May 15 to June 30, 2020, in a virtual format. If you were a viewer, participating artist, sponsor, volunteer or supporter, thank you very much for your participation and support. We are very thankful for the thousands of viewers that watched the Festival. The Festival included a virtual art exhibition with the participation of 22 visual artists from Canada, Mexico and Ecuador. Additionally, we presented a presential exhibition with a few pieces of artwork our visual artists. All the artistic profiles and their artwork can be seen in the link to the virtual exhibition. The Festival was also a platform to showcase the talent of individual artists and cultural groups who presented online work in diverse disciplines including dance, film making, literature, music and theatre. We hosted a total of 40 online activities which include interviews to visual artists, poetry evenings, theatrical nights, cultural country presentations, musical conversations, virtual concerts, children storytelling, and educational seminars. We strongly believe in our mission of creating spaces to promote the best of us. We believe that our community is a mosaic of opportunities and that the new digital economy represents a great area of opportunity to create meaningful work that creates an impact in society, In this occasion we were able to showcase the talent of artists, provide audiences with quality options to be entertained or educated and bring a positive spirit betting for a better future for all. Finally, we would like to thank to all the artists and organizations that are part of the program. Thanks to Calgary Arts Development, The Rozsa Foundation, cSpace King Edward, Spanic Arts, Grand Entertainment Productions and Nash Productions for the support in the production. H O M E N A J E A O S C A R C H AV E Z As part of the Virtual Latin American Art Festival 2020 we are proud to present; Homage to Oscar Chavez with Mexican artist Ingrid Lozano. I N G R I D LOZ A N O R E V I E W Ingrid was born in the city of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. Her interest for music began at she age of 16, where she began to be interested in great musical and lyrical content of songs belonging to she genre of trova, new singing and Latin American folklore; however, in she search to find different nuances, she also felt in love with Mexican music, blues and urban trova. Since 2000 she has been part of the Artistic Cast of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, appearing in different forums outside and within this institution. She has been part of different groups such as she Latin American Folklore group Kutzi, she has undertaken different projects such as she duet Luna Castaña, with which they produced in 2005, Igual a Dos with José Angulo from she Cuicani group, Arco y Voz with Giulio Angelini, in which she has performed she rescue of songs by she most important duets of she trova or given a contemporary touch to material from she trova and she blues, merging she violin, guitar and voice. She has been presented in cultural forums such as she Quimera Festival, FENIE, FILEM, Guadalajara International Fair, Monarch Butterfly International Festival, Ocampo, Mich., Las Almas International Cultural Festival ”Festival and Cultural Fair of Alfeñique, Cultural Week Mexico Venezuela, Day of the Dead 6

Festival at she Jack Singer Concert Hall Theatre in Calgary, Canada; at she “El Carmen” Cultural Festival in Tlalpujahua Michoacán, sshe has participated as a special guest since 2016. She has been sworn in various competitions organized by she Toluca City Council, she Government of she State of Mexico and she Autonomous University of she State of Mexico. She ventures into genres such as trova, new singing, blues and Mexican popular music, as a singer song writer and has shared she stage with artists of she stature of Vicente and Santiago Feliú, Noél Nicola, Armando Rosas, Mauricio Díaz el Hueso, Gabino Palomares, Tex Tex, The Victims of Dr. Cerebro, Minimum Wage, Andrés Sherrera, El Mastuerzo, Alex Piedra, Nayeli Nesme, Malena Durán, Martha Toledo, among others. She is currently promoting his first record production “Rasgos”, with themes of his authorship, whose material contains genres such as son, blues, folklore, among others, presented in “The National Museum of Popular Cultures” being reviewed by national media winning she title of “The new face of Mexican folklore”, compared to Mercedes Sosa, Violeta Parra and Amparo Ochoa. This production has allowed her to play on she radio in Sheredia, Costa Rica, as well as on Radio Musical USA, in California. In 2018 she participated in the festival “Mujeres en la Canción” which brought together she best performers and singer-songwriters in Mexico. Her work has been reviewed by various media such as Sol de Toluca, the national magazine “Huellas”, Semanario Punto, which dedicated three editions to her career.

L A F L A U TA E N E L S E P T I M O A RT E As part of the Virtual Latin American Art Festival 2020 we are proud to present concert with Mexico City Chamber Orchestra performing “La Flauta en el Séptimo Arte” M E X I C O C I T Y C H A M B E R O R C H E ST R A , A .C . Since 1968, when it was founded, it has been one of the most important Orchestras in Mexico. “This great Orchestra not only may be compared with the best orchestras in the world but it works just as the Renaissance factory , under the guidance of Miguel Bernal Matus and with his lessons and advises he has been forming good musicians and artists, who know their mission is to improve others life, executing their profession and art. Luis Sandi, Mexican Musician and Composer We can consider this Orchestra as one of a kind, because it not only hires musicians, has rehearsals and offers concerts; It also prepares their own artist by selecting talented children and young people to grant them a scholarship. Trains and prepares them and when they are ready they form part of the Orchestra to get a professional level. Some of them are an important part of Mexican Orchestras and worldwide. Some of the most prestigious artist have performed with the Mexico City Chamber Orchestra, O.C.C.M (according to its Spanish initials) just like Pierre Fournier, Henryk Szeryng, Nicanor Zavaleta, Ruggiero Ricci and they have testified about the professional level and maturity it has. 8

The O.C.C.M., have made some tours in the Mexican Republic, the United States and to Europe where it enjoy a great deal of success with the appreciative audiences in Germany, Italy, France and Spain. This success was shown through the newspapers. Those who know the O.C.C.M., recognize that this is the product of Maestro Miguel Bernal Matus´s work, its founder and conductor and his main interest has been the children and youth and his educational concerts in Elementary Schools, High Schools and Universities. These are living proof of his interest to bring the best of the thought and essence to those who are the future of our world. Due to its high professional level, the O.C.C.M., has been the creator of other Orchestras; for example the Coyoacan Symphony Orchestra, The Cuajimalpa Chamber Orchestra, the University of Puebla Chamber Orchestra and the Casa del Lago Chamber Orchestra. The O.C.C.M. had receives many awards and acknowledgments:

• The W. A. Mozart Gold Medal, Excellent Degree granted by the Austrian Government.

• Trophy granted by Opera and Music Magazine from Miami, Florida.

• Recognitions from many Schools and Cultural Institutions.

The last honor the Mexico City Chamber Orchestra got was the one offered by The Sociedad Protectora del Tesoro Artístico de México (Mexican Artistic Heritage Society) in November 2004 naming the O.C.C.M, as “One of the Artistic Treasures of Mexico”. Its founder and conductor Miguel Bernal Matus, has received the following important recognitions: • Academic member of the Mexican Legion of Honor • Member of the Fine Arts Academy • Honorary member of the Mexican Society for Geography and Statistics • In 2008 he received the Grand Cross of Honour from the Mexican Legion of Honor • In 2010 the National Academy granted him a medal. • In 2013 the Mexico City Legislative Assembly offered him the Medal for Merit of Fine Arts and Musical Performance. In 2006 he became a member of the CSIF (Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers) where he began his film adventure. His works are mostly filmed in 16mm and Super 8mm film, although he also has works in digital format. His short films have been selected to be shown at festivals in Scotland, Cambodia, Colombia, the United States and Canada A B O U T I M AG I N A IMAGINA is a community of Hispanic authors spreading creative freedom and promoting literary creation in Spanish throughout the world. Founded by JosĂŠ Antonio Villalobos Sarria, IMAGINA is a community that promotes literary creation in Spanish. Through participation, he rescues Hispanic voices, solidifying his identity through inclusive activities. It is a community of authors, creators and artists that defends cultural mobilization as a way of action and social commitment. The IMAGINA community is promoted by several Hispanic authors residing in Canada with aspirations of achieving 10

a global reach.IMAGINA intends to stimulate creative work, creating an open space to develop events, literary projects, and spread the valuable universe of the word in Spanish, encouraging participation at all times. Al graduarse de ingeniero agrónomo en Escuela Agrícola Panamericana “El Zamorano”, viaja a Toronto para continuar estudios de postgrado en Negocios Internacionales. Empiezan a escribir a los 12 años, sin embargo, es en esta época canadiense cuando decide perseguir a la literatura por completo. Actualmente vive en Calgary, Canadá. Especializándose en Desarrollo Internacional de Negocios Agrícolas, trabaja para Black Earth Humic LP como Gerente de Ventas Internacional. Posición desde la que coordina y promueve ventas a nivel mundial, cubriendo 37 países en las regiones de América Latina, Europa, Asia y el Medio Oriente. H O ST Miguel Cortines Casa Mexico Foundation & TuEspacio A B O U T T E AT R O G ATO N EG R O T H E AT R E I N S PA N I S H Gato Negro’s mission is to celebrate and promote the vibrancy and diversity of Spanish and Latin American culture and heritage with unique productions of theatre. Gato Negro was established in 2013 by the producer, director, and actor, Vicky Velasco. This was the first Spanish theater group in Calgary and now it has over six years of theatrical activity and over seven successful plays, which include, “The Jump Back” (El Salto Atras) 2013-2018, “Between Ties” (Entre Lazos) 2014, “Immigrant, I am” (ImmigranteSoy) 2014, “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream” 2017, and “Chimera” (Quimeras) (2017). These productions have had great acceptance in the LatinAmerican community as well as the bilingual programs in the Calgary public and Catholic schools; which all of their plays have had a full house. “Quimeras” in 2018 at the Theatre Junction Grand. Recreating the realism magic of Latin-American writers, Stories from G. Garcia Marquez (Colombia), Henry Gonzalez (Venezuela), Ornelio Jorge Cardoso (Mexico), Mario Benedetti (Uruguay) as well as unknown stories.

R O C K E N T U I D I O M A S AT U R DAYS F E AT U R I N G “ R I TM O PELIGROSO” As part of the Virtual Latin American Art Festival we are presenting the Mexican Band “Ritmo Peligroso” who will be hanging out virtually with us to celebrate another expression of art who will be with our DeLux Co-Host Nash Chaparro A B O U T R I TM O P E L I G R O S O Ritmo Peligroso is a Mexican post-punk/rock band that was created in 1978 and known until 1984 as Dangerous Rhythm. Under that name, its members say, it was the first Mexican punk rock band, with strong influences from international punk subcultures. They sang most of their music in English. They would evolve to different sounds over the years, finally reaching the one that would bring them such enormous success in the mid to late 1980s. In the new incarnation of the band, bassist Avi Michel Jr., drummer Jorge Gato Arce, and guitar players Moongus Ávila Costa and Mosy (the newest member of the band), share the stage with Cuban singer Piro Pendas. His style has come to be considered punk rock and even New Wave. The band released a compilation disk on the Comrock label, promoted in Mexico to make commercial rock in Mexico more accessible there. It included two Ritmo Peligroso songs: Marielito, about the arrival of a Cuban in the Mariel boatlift, and Modern Minds. Later, known by then as Ritmo Peligroso, the group changed its style to incorporate elements of Latin rock and Latin rhythms, in a self-titled album which gave them their two big releases: Déjala Tranquila and Contaminado. On December 15, 1989, Ritmo Peligroso participated in an environmental concert organized by WFM radio at the WTC arena in Mexico City with their signature song, Contaminado. Their latest album, Matacandela, was produced by Sabo Romo of Caifanes and co-produced by Piro and Avi Michel J. The band is working on a live recording CD/ DVD together with a documentary telling the history of the group.

Fue fundado en Julio del 2015 y se enorgullecen de ser parte de esta vibrante ciudad y de tener entre nuestros miembros algunas hermanas y hermanos de Canadá, Colombia, México, Bolivia, Ecuador, África y España. Raices del Peru(Peruvian roots) is a non-profit Cultural Association that aims to spread the Peruvian Culture and dances in Alberta. It was founded in July 2015.They are proud to be part of this vibrant city and to have among our members some sisters and brothers from Canada, Colombia, Mexico, Bolivia, Ecuador, Africa and Spain.

The band started in Los Angeles, where they made their first public appearances under the name Kenny and The Electrics, playing in venues like Whiskey A Go Go. They moved back to Mexico in 1980 and went on to be considered an internationally important Mexican rock band emblematic of Mexican rock in the 1980s. Aviles has been called the Mexican Pat Benatar and one of the most-important women in Mexican rock. The real queen of rock in Mexico.

Dr. Ucan-Marin es un ferviente promotor de ciencia y tecnología para el desarrollo de Latinoamérica, haciendo énfasis en el desarrollo y la transferencia tecnológica. Su enfoque ha sido desarrollar las zonas marginadas y rurales en la que ha colaborado y trabajado en el sector público y privado en Canadá, México y Noruega. El Dr. Ucan-Marin ve en la expresión de poesía y prosa, una forma valida y relevante de trasferencia de emociones y de la enorme riqueza cultural de Latinoamérica. Ha publicado un libro de poesía “Ensayo Sobre el Sueño” y dos carpetas graficas. La carpeta Gráfica de Poemas “Hamacas y Sueños” que fue presentada en la UNAM Canadá en 2007 y en el Visual Art Centre Orleans (2008), y dentro de las actividades del Festival del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México (Palacio de la Moneda, 2008); y finalista del concurso de Carpetas gráficas de la biblioteca de Alejandría (Egipto) en 2009, en Sevilla en 2009, y en Italia en el 2009. La Carpeta Grafica “Perros de narices negras” fue presentada en la Universidad de Carleton en el 2016. En el 2017 recibió el premio Ohtli (Senado de la República Mexicana), así como el reconocimiento en 2017 de ser uno de los 10 Hispano-canadienses más influentes en Canadá, por TD Bank. V Í C TO R M A N U E L H E R N Á N D E Z C AST I L LO Ciudad de México . Maestro en Artes Gráficas por la Academia de Bellas Artes de Cracovia Polonia, Especialista en Grabado por el Atelier Gosset-Tanguy de la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de París Francia, Licenciado en Artes Visuales por la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas UNAM. En 2017 obtuvo premios de selección y expuso en Belgrado y en Polonia, y cuenta con más de 30 premios y reconocimientos internacionales. Es un reconocido artista mexicano que cuenta con una gran valoración de su obra en circuitos de arte especializados de Polonia, Finlandia y otros países de Europa del Este. Se le considera uno de los grabadores en técnica de linóleo mas importantes en el mundo.

L A C I U D A D D E LO S M A N G L A R E S : V I RT U A L E X H I B I T I O N A N D A RT I ST TA L K As part of the Virtual Latin American Art Exhibition and Festival we are honoured to present a exhibition and discussion of the art collection La Ciudad de Los Manglares by Ecuadorian artist, Federico Airaudo. Connecting participants across Canada and Ecuador, this gathering will include a vibrant storying of selected art pieces by Federico, followed by a cross-continental discussion around the propositions that his paintings offer for a changing world. A B O U T ‘ L A C I U D A D D E LO S M A N G L A R E S ’ Los Manglares stand along the edges where city-land meets river in the industrial city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Grounded by an exposed root system of long-legged tentacles, Los Manglares stand in and above polluted waters. They are an inventively adaptive tree network that, unlike many others, are able to survive the harsh conditions of Guayaquil’s precarious coastal ecology. Lacing the waterways that frame Guayaquil’s concrete hills and developing social landscape - despite increasing pollution and diminishing biodiversity of its rivers - Los Manglares continue to act as mitigators of waste materials, water-logged mud and amphibious animal life that move here. Like many Guayaquileños, Los Manglares both resist and depend on the impurities of their diverse community contributors for survival. This collection, ‘La Ciudad de Los Manglares’, playfully re-characterizes commonplace encounters with the people and objects that make social life in Guayaquil - not despite their differences but because of them. It is a sort of archive of these faces and their stories – their dress, attitudes, qualities - how they bump up against each other, relate, and sometimes perform in unexpected ways. Using particular animals, tropical plants and familiar (often overlooked) objects in accessible and humorous visual scenarios, these paintings story the personalities of Guayaquil, La Ciudad de Los Manglares, and the socio-political dynamics in which they persist.

R O ST R O S O C U LTO S As part of the Virtual Latin American Art Festival we are presenting the Mexican Band ROSTROS OCULTOS who will be virtually with us sharing their stories and music with our DeLux Co-Host Nash Chaparro A B O U T R O ST R O S O C U LTO S In 1984 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, two young people from Guadalajara began to do energetic rock in Spanish. Arturo Ybarra, then guitarist of the group Mask and Agustín Villa (Cala), then vocalist of the Los Clips project; They decided to unite their goals as musicians, to form a group that would be a mirror of their lives, their dreams, their loves, their heartbreak and their disappointments as young people. This new project was renamed Montana. The magic of Montana was expressed in his first album “Quiero Más” under the seal of the WEA company. Showing a fresh, light and enveloping style. With a new name in 1985 they begin the history of “Hidden Faces”, from that year they begin to place themselves within the taste of people in different cities of the country. Discs like “Fired”, “Open your Heart”, “Musicians, Poets and Locos” and “Dame una Razón”. All under the seal of the EMI company. Without a doubt they have left an indelible mark on the history of Rock in Spanish. On their fifteenth anniversary they record “15 Celebration” under the Sony Music company label. With the intervention of Aleks Syntek, Marciano Cantero (Enanitos Verdes), Alex Lora (El Tri), Benny 27

Ibarra, Sara Valenzuela (La Dosis), José Fors (La Cuca), Kazz (Los Amantes de Lola), Hugo Rodríguez (Azul Violeta), Alejandra Guzmán, Kenny, adding the incursion of Carmín and the personality of Héctor Quijada (La Lupita). With this album, Hidden Faces settled accounts with all his followers and with themselves, the tour was swift and in their presentation in Guadalajara, they filled the Benito Juárez Auditorium with 15 thousand people. Within this celebration, the video “Give me a Reason” was made, under the direction of Sergio Ulloa, renowned photographer who participated alongside Rene Castillo in the short film “Hasta los Huesos”, placing himself among the favorites on the different video channels . Based on Hugo Sánchez’s soccer career, they decided to compose a song called “Hugol” and they made the video for it, to honor the best Mexican soccer player of all time. Within this single is included an Interactive CD with the best of Hugo Sánchez’s career and the history of Hidden Faces. With the experience of many years in the year of 2003, “Rostros Ocultos” presents its new production under the seal of the Sony Music company. With totally unpublished songs, “Renacer” is the name of this album where they present a new cycle, a new image, a ... “Renacer”. In this album they include a song called “Heart” which is about a girl who was born with a very weak heart and is waiting for a heart transplant. The group wants to give a message to its followers and to the community in general about the importance of “Organ Donation”. This CD includes a sticker that promotes organ donation and an authorization card for people who are interested in being organ donors. This production has the participation of Alex González, drummer from Maná accompanying them with his talent in the song “I don’t want to see you anymore” as well as the talent of the Spanish rock master Miguel Ríos in a special version of “Santo y Diablo”. The first single from “Santo y Diablo” is included in the soundtrack of the movie “Santos Diablos”. This theme talks about the duality of the human being, the discernment of good and evil. The video for this first single was made by the company Praxis, a Mexican company specializing in third-dimensional animations, the recording was made in Guadalajara, Jalisco and the Post-Production was made in Miami. Agustín Villa (Cala) and Arturo Ybarra have received countless recognitions and awards throughout their career, among them, the “Fonos” award which was awarded to Cala as “The Best Spanish Rock Vocalist”. For his part Arturo Ybarra was recognized as “The Best Rock Guitarist” by the magazine “Connect”, Arturo Ybarra is also recognized for his productions in Gospel Music, where he has clearly expressed his passion for the spiritual reflection of the human being. Recently his song “el Final” was considered among the 100 most important songs in music in Mexico as well as in 24th place of relevance during the eighties by the VHI television network.

L I V I N G M I G R AT I O N : VO I C E S O F C A LG A RY Living Migration is a community-based research project focused on understanding the effect of language on immigrantsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; integration into Canadian society. The group of stories we shared during the First Digital Storytelling Festival mark the beginning of many more story work to come in Calgary. We worked with the Middle Path Temple, the Venezuelan Canadian Association of Calgary and Calgary Public Library to connect with our participants. We meet with 20 storytellers, between the ages of 20 and 80, coming from 5 different countries (China, Iran, Costa Rica, South Korea, Venezuela plus one from Canada). We tailored our project to give our participants access to new skills and creating a safe space that would allow them to speak up about how to make Calgary more welcoming. Though the use of digital storytelling, we worked closely with each one of our participants from scriptwriting, to audio recording and video editing to facilitate their story work, and more importantly, to understand their experiences. The meaning-making process of the shared experiences, as well as the ideas on how to improve the city, were produced in something similar to a community brainstorming. The Digital Storytelling Festival was hosted by Hortensia Barrios & Karina Hincapie, Research Fellows at the Language Research Centre in the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures. Living Migration received the Innovation Untold Award in the category of Innovation in Communication which is awarded to artists, inventors, volunteers, activists, public servants, educators, researchers and/or entrepreneurs affiliated to the University of Calgary that are creating change in the world in a new way, solving problems, meeting needs, or satisfying desires with their innovation while shaping the future.
