Presentation Juan JosĂŠ Herrera de la Muela, General Director
In this publication, Casa Asia gathers a synthesis of the activity developed throughout a year, through its different areas of action. Despite the context of tough financial and political crisis, and therefore large budget adjustments, we have not stopped having an active role in our purpose, which is to approach the diversity of the countries of Asia and the Pacific. These are, in my opinion, some of the most relevant activities. In the economic field, I would like to highlight the 2nd International Congress on Asian Tourism that brought together around 30 experts of the sector and successfully analysed the potential of the Asian tourism as an issuing market towards Europe. Another activity that must be mentioned was the holding of the 1st edition of the China at Barcelona Summit, a pioneer initiative linked to the arrival of Chinese investment to South Europe and the area of the Mediterranean with the purpose to position Barcelona as the best option to locate these investments in the area. In this direction, the presentation of the study Analysis of the Potential of the Ports of the Spanish Mediterranean as China's entrance to Europe took place and it approached the sea commercial route that joins Asia and Europe and goes past the Spanish ports. Within the field of Politics and Society, more than 50 lectures were held, mostly in order to contribute a greater dissemination of the current news affairs of the region of Asia and the Pacific. Among others, the intellectuals Tariq Ramadan and Ramin Jahanblegoo visited us, as well as the expert in security Narushige Michishita Casa Asia organised the 2nd Meeting of Asian and Spanish Women and the 8th East-West Dialogue, two discussion forums that analysed the role of women as the driving force of change of their societies, on the one hand, and the world government system in a moment of economic crisis and political and social response, on the other. Both forums included the participation of Asian personalities such as Kiyotaka Akasaka, from United Nations, Attiya Inayatulah, MP in the Parliament of Pakistan, or Sun Jisheng, Deab and Professor at the Department of International Studies of the University of Foreign Affairs of China.

Annual Report 2011
Zainah Anwar, co-founder and first Director of the NGO Sisters in Islam, and Ratna Osnam, Director, received the 2011 Casa Asia Award during the closing of the 2nd Meeting of Asian and Spanish Women. The award recognizes their firm commitment to promote the rights of women from Malaysia in the Muslim world. In the cultural field, I would like to especially mention two exhibitions. The first one, “Afghanistan”, an exhibition that brought together the work of three photographers, Guillermo Cervera, François Fleury and Rubén Guillem, the journalistic writing by Plàcid Garcia-Planas and Guillaume Fourmont-Dainville and the literary work, by the Afghan writer Atiq Rahimi. And the second one, "Japan: Kingdom of Characters", an exhibition about the Kawaii culture, Japanese manga and anime presented through images, sculptures, panels and screenings of the popular characters that have been incredibly successful among the Japanese society until now. Casa Asia’s bet for cinema stands out once again with the organisation of the first edition of Casa Asia Film Week, a new film festival specialised in Asia. The contest presented a cinematographic programme of 30 films, 11 of which competed in the official section, and it became a ticket success. Ann Hui, film director from Hong Kong, received the Honourific Award Casa Asia Film Week 2011. The Asia Festival in its tenth edition showed the diversity and richness of Asian cultures through a multidisciplinary programme aimed at all kind of public. The main stars of this year were the Central Asian folk group Turan, Samurai Jazz Band Pe’z, the Chinese indie sing-and-songwriter Mamer, the traditional Korean music band Sorum, the Pakistani pop singer Humera Arshad and the fighters of the Naadam Festival of Mongolia. In support of the cultural industries of our country, the programme “New Urban Cultures” was presented in New Delhi. This event turned to the dialogue among prestigious artists and creators from Spain and India: Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Ritu Kumar and Jivi Sethi about fashion and design; Xavier Carrillo, Iván F. Lobo and Vishal Gondal about videogames; Kike Maíllo, R. Kumar Gupta and Mike Hostench about author cinema, together with the musical performances of the band Fuel Fandango, DJ Ale and Sunny Singh, a tasting of Spanish 9

products, a film display of novel directors and the exhibitions by Agatha Ruiz de la Prada and by Frederic Amat. In the educational field, 85 different courses of Asian languages and specialised disciplines were offered, and the Bamboo School, the programme of intercultural education of Casa Asia, offered more than 350 activities in schools and educational centres. The two observatories of the institutions, the Iberoamerican Observatory of Asia and the Pacific and the Observatory of Central Asia, continued their activity focused on promoting the knowledge of its respective fields of interest, whereas the project Communities continued organising activities and empowering the Asian residents of our country. A third observatory devoted to the region of India and South Asia began to be worked on. In 2011 two tributes took place: the one we offered to the victims of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated the Northeastern Japanese coast, and to the figure of Raimon Panikkar, one of the internationally most recognized Catalan thinkers. I do not want to forget that Casa Asia’s 10th anniversary was held in 2011. The 9th of November 2001 the constitution signature of the consortium took place thanks to the will shared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat) and the Barcelona City Council. Finally, I would like my last words in this Annual Report to be grateful of the support received by the administration of the consortium and by the companies of the High Board of Trustees of Casa Asia. Moreover, I would like to thank the collaboration offered by Spanish economic, academic and cultural agents, as well as the Asian communities resident in our country and the civil society. I would like to congratulate the whole team of Casa Asia for the quality of their work and success achieved in 2011. Thank you all very much.

Within the field of science, education, business or culture we have many examples of this process of transformation from an economy with low labour costs towards an economy of knowledge based on innovation. However, there is still a long path, which is why at this roundtable the challenges of this transition and the implications for the rest of the world were discussed.
