INTRODUCTIONS Foreword by Chairman of Board of Management On behalf of the Board of Management of the Artane School of Music it gives me great pleasure to present the Strategic Plan for the School for the years 2013 to 2016. Covering the headings of Governance and Structure, Finance and fundraising, Facilities, Musical Activities, Communications and Marketing, the Plan provides a blueprint for the future of the School that will build on its traditions, develop its activities and offer the highest standards of musical education and musicianship to the communities which it serves. The Artane Band has, through its long involvement with the GAA on major national sporting occasions, become part of what is unique and symbolic of the Irish way of life. The school of music from which the Band now springs is dedicated to educating boys and girls from its North City catchment area in musicianship, carrying on the tradition started by the Christian Brothers in 1872. It is committed to musical excellence and is fortunate to have on its staff musicians and teachers of the highest calibre. Like all successful organisations the Artane Band has had to adapt and change with the times, the most far reaching being the formation jointly by the Christian Brothers and the GAA in 1998 of the Artane School of Music Trust, under which the School of Music is now run. This Strategic Plan represents the next step forward for the School. It has been developed through the joint efforts of the entire School community, trustees, board members, staff, parents, pupils, past pupils, band members and people with musical expertise. It is forward looking and challenging and is intended to bring this unique school to new levels of excellence, offering the best in musical education to its pupils. We are fortunate to have on our staff and in our supporting community people with the energy, vision and volunteering spirit to implement the Artane School of Music Strategic Plan so that by the end of 2016 we will be able to say: “The Artane School of Music is recognised as one of Ireland’s leading schools of music providing outstanding tuition and opportunities for development to students and has become recognised as a leading band in Ireland and overseas”. n ARTANE SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND BAND
INTRODUCTIONS Foreword by Bro. J. K. Mullan The launch of this Strategic Plan 2013-2016 for the Artane School of Music marks another important stage in the ongoing development of the School of Music. On a historical note the Artane Boys Band goes back to its foundation by the Christian Brothers in 1872 and the Band has had a close association with the GAA stretching back to 1886. At the present time the Christian Brothers and the GAA are joint Trustees of the Artane School of Music. Since its establishment in 1998 the Artane School of Music has extended its range of musical activities and offers opportunities to boys and girls at primary and post-primary level s to learn the basic skills of musicianship both in theory and in instrumental practice. Over time as the young people progress they learn to perform in ensembles, the Beginners Band, the Junior Band, the Artane Band, quartets and quintets. The students also take Theory Grades in Music and are offered classes in Junior and Leaving Certificate Music. Graduates of the School of Music can continue their involvement in music and public performances by joining the Artane Senior Band. Under the direction of the Board of Management this Strategic Plan has been prepared by a Steering Group consisting of Board members, current staff, past-pupils, parents and representatives of the music world. This Steering Group consulted widely and held facilitated workshops that focused on planning for the future of the School of Music and developing a plan that builds on current strengths and identifies new possibilities for the School and its students for the years ahead. The Strategic Plan is ambitious, comprehensive and attractively presented. It deals with essential elements and identifies priorities that any organisation looking to its future needs to attend to. It includes actions and targets with timelines for completion and highlights the importance of implementation and includes annual reviews of how the targets of the Plan are being achieved. On behalf of the Christian Brothers I take this opportunity to thank the Board of Management and the Steering Group for their work in preparing this Strategic Plan and am mindful that they devote their time, energy and expertise to the School of Music on a voluntary basis. I wish them every success as they move ahead with the implementation of the Strategic Plan.

4 STRATEGIC PLAN 2013-2016
Foreword by Liam Ó Néill Is cúis mhór áthais dom an deis seo a bheith a agam chun na focail seo a leanas a scríobh don plean tabhachtach seo. It gives me great pleasure to pen these words in recognition of this most important strategic plan which aims to map out a healthy future for the Artane School of Music. The Artane School of Music and the GAA are synonymous with each other. The sight of the famed blue and red tunics conjures up memories of big days at Croke Park – not least our All-Ireland finals. To that end our relationship with such an outstanding organisation – one that mirrors many of the values we ourselves espouse – is one we value highly and one that extends far beyond the presence of Artane’s musicians on our big match days. To build on the success of an organisation such as this a roadmap and a plan is imperative and this Strategic Plan clearly outlines where the Artane School of Music hopes to go over the course of the next three years. The headings covered mean every aspect of your activity has been examined and planned for and this augurs well for the future direction of the School. Not every organisation can lean on the tradition that underpins the Artane School of Music. It is one forged on the pursuit of musical excellence through education and the fruits of this approach are acknowledged and respected the length and breadth of the country. Crucially your work focuses on the connection between young people and music and this is something that should not be overlooked. I wish you every success with the implementation and roll out of this ambitious and carefully crafted plan and look forward to the GAA offering whatever assistance we can for many years to come. Rath Dé ar an obair,
Liam Ó Néill Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
T
he Artane Boys Band was founded in 1872 by Brother Alphonsus Hoope, Superior of the Artane Industrial School, which had been established three years earlier. They gave their first public performance on the grounds of the school for the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) two years later. In 1886 the band accepted an invitation to play at the Whit Monday games of the fledgling Gaelic Athletic Association on June 14th at the North Circular Road grounds, and began an association which endures to the present day. Two major episodes happened in 1969. On February 15th the band hall was burned to the ground destroying all of the uniforms, instruments and music. The band appeared on Irish television the following week, and offers of help flooded in from Ireland and abroad, allowing the band to continue. In June, the industrial school closed, and membership of the band was opened up to boys who lived locally, ensuring a seamless transition from school band to community band.
Victoria, Edward VII, George V and most recently, on the occasion of the state visit to Ireland by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh to Croke Park. They have also shared a stage with performers such as Perry Como, Neil Diamond, U2, and James Last, as well as the Boston Pops Orchestra. More recently, the Artane Band was asked to open the Oxegen Festival with up and coming rock band, “The Brilliant Things”. It is perhaps through their performances in Croke Park, the home of Gaelic Games, that the band is best known, although this makes up less than half their public performances throughout the year. Their scarlet and blue uniforms are considered to be an integral part of big match days and with the arrival of Soccer and Rugby international match days to Croke Park, the reputation of the Band has led to them being invited to join both the Army and Garda (Police) Bands as part of the formalities at these occasions.
In 1988 the Artane Senior Band was formed by past members of the Artane Boys Band so that any one who graduated from the Artane Boys Band at 16 years of age could continue to be part of the Artane complex by joining the Artane Senior Band.
From 1998 the Artane Boys Band evolved to become the Artane School of Music (ASM) and increased the range of musical opportunities available to both boys and girls. 2002 saw the first intake of girls into the band itself, and just two years later, on Sunday October 17th saw the first ever performance of the renamed Artane Band, including 19 girls at the International Rules Match in Croke Park
The band has toured the USA on seven occasions, as well as trips to Toronto, Canada, Moscow, and has also travelled extensively around both Ireland, and the UK. They have played for every President and Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland, as well as Presidents Kennedy, Nixon and Clinton of the USA. The Band are no strangers to royalty either, having played for Queen
The final words about this Band, a part of Ireland’s history and heritage, can be left to Arthur Fiedler, conductor of the world famous Boston Pops Orchestra, who on conducting the band, during a tour of Boston in 1974, remarked “you cannot judge these children as children; you must judge them as musicians, and fine musicians they are”.

WHAT WE HEARD AND DISCOVERED DURING THE CONSULTATION PROCESS “DEVELOP PROMOTIONAL VIDEO/AUDIO MATERIAL HIGHLIGHTING THE SPECTRUM OF EDUCATIONAL AND PERFORMING OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE AND SHOWCASING THE SUCCESS OF THE ARTANE BAND AND SCHOOL OF MUSIC”
“The Artane Band has a USP [unique selling point] which other schools of music do not have – a Band open to all which pursues excellence AND performs professionally”
“Explore the opportunity of developing different sections available for gigs, e.g Sax Choir/ Quartet, Clarinet Choir, Brass band. A Clarinet choir and brass band have been formed but they only get to play at the concert hall and Christmas concert”
“Artane Information could be posted on the website and regularly updated and lists of engagements/lesson times could be circulated. Look at developing a newsletter each term reporting on events and notifying of upcoming arrangements. A general noticeboard should be placed in the reception area to inform our activities and develop a Facebook page for Band members/school of music students” “Celebrate the success of the students and band members by hosting annual concert with all students and band members participating in the show and inviting family, relatives, schools, local media and or national media and community members”
“There would be great value in inviting guest performers into ASM to deliver master classes and performances to school members and parents”
“DEVELOP A PROSPECTUS FOR THE SCHOOL THAT COULD BE DOWNLOADED ONLINE TO SHOW WHAT FACILITIES AND SERVICES WE OFFER” “Send smaller ensembles to schools to show off instruments and showcase the band and ASM – invite schools to Artane to view concerts and see instruments”
“Artane offers something special, it provides students with discipline, values and instils confidence in its members, Artane School of Music is the best thing that happened to my son.” 12 STRATEGIC PLAN 2013-2016
METHODOLOGY OF THE PLANNING PROCESS
I
n 2013 The Artane School of Music and Band recognised that planning was a core priority and wanted to develop a plan that would provide the school of music and band with a clear roadmap to allow the school of music to continue to prosper and grow within the current environment. There was an acknowledgement that although the School had been tremendously successful in the past, a new framework was required for both the board of management, staff and volunteers if we were to continue to excel and meet the needs of our students, members, parents and community and allow Artane to reach its potential into the future. This plan would provide clear direction for the management and the staff as to the agreed priorities for the school of music and band over the next three years. The project began with an initial meeting with the board of management to formulate an approach to develop a strategic plan for ASM. It was agreed that the starting point in the exercise should be forming a steering group consisting of board members, past pupils, current staff, committee members, representatives from the music industry and parents. The Steering Committee was formed in March 2013, to act as an advisory group for the process to add value, develop ideas and encourage participation throughout the project. A workshop was held with the
Steering Group to gather their aspirations for the future of Artane School of Music and what they wanted to see in place in 2016. The group comprised of: 1. Con Hogan, Chairman of the Board 2. Matt Browne, Board Member 3. Pat Mullen, Treasurer 4. Michael Foster, Board Member 5. Kathleen Ryan, Board Member 6. Colm Folan, Committee Member and Parent 7. Glenn Gillard, Senior Band Member 8. Dorothy Conaghan, Music Consultant 9. Joe Edge, ASM Administrator 10. Ronan O’Reilly, ASM Director of Music 11. Tony Doherty, ASM Head of Musicianship The second phase of the consultation process was to invite current and past parents, students, tutors, band members of all ages to participate in a facilitated workshop to share their opinions and ideas on the future of Artane School of Music and Band. Over 60 people attended where as a group they focused on what opportunities existed in the areas of communications, finance and fundraising, facilities, music activities and engaging with the community. An online survey was also conducted with students and parents also inputting their ideas into the process. Meetings also took place with students and tutors where they were asked on what
their aspirations and what their future requirements are. Innovative and challenging ideas of creating new offerings were derived here building on current strengths of the school of music, whilst identifying new possibilities for students and members in the future. A draft of the document was produced and was presented to the board and the steering group for consideration and review. This resulted in a number of additional inputs and the detail of the plan was agreed by all parties. The plan has been completed and outlines detailed goals and aspirations in each of following areas: • Governance / Structures • Musical Activities • Finance and Fundraising • Facilities • Communications and Marketing Each action item identified has an owner and an anticipated target for the action item to be completed. This will assist Artane School of Music in planning and resourcing our staff and committees in the future. At the end of each year prior to the completion of the school year, the management and staff will jointly review the progress against action items contained in the plan, adjust, modify or adapt the plan as appropriate. STRATEGIC PLAN 2013-2016 25
n ARTANE SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND BAND
IMPLEMENTATION The first step to implement this plan is to present the plan to the board of management, staff, and trustees, to provide them with the opportunity to approve the projects and milestones associated to those. Once approved, the plan will be launched in Croke Park to students, parents, staff, clients, government agencies and community members ensuring that they are informed as to priorities within the School of Music for the next three years. We will also circulate the plan to our parents and local schools and develop an online format to assist accessing the plan via the website. The next step will be to present the management review process to the board of management and staff which will allocate goals and objectives to the staff. These goals are streamlined with those within the plan to ensure alignment and visibility. Once all stakeholders review each component of the plan, the board of management will be charged with the responsibility to oversee the implementation of the plan. Implementation of the Strategic Plan will be inserted as a line item on the agenda of Board of Management meetings.
REVIEWING THE PLAN The board of management with the staff team will complete a comprehensive review with each of the committees during June of each year. This will include an assessment of progress made in respect to each component of the plan versus the established milestones. The review will also include an analysis of the relevance of each of the targets and the inclusion of new targets and projects that are deemed appropriate by the board of management and staff.
