TRIMESTER TO SEMESTER SHIFT Casady School has moved from a trimester to a semester system. For the Class of 2022, grades 9 through 11 are reported by trimester. Grade 12 will be reported by semester. The decision to move from trimesters to semesters fits within the larger Strategic Academic Plan that reflects Casady’s commitment to prioritize student wellness and durable learning. Notably, the shift to semesters will provide students with better pacing to their academic learning and will give teachers extended time to design classroom experiences that foster greater collaboration, in-depth inquiry, and project-based learning.
INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES PROGRAM Interdisciplinary Studies means studies that involve more than one discipline, like English and History. Casady School's Interdisciplinary Studies program is an integrative, inquiry-based learning experience encouraging intrinsically-motivated thinkers. Based in Casady’s Design Hub (d.Hub), the Interdisciplinary Studies Program follows 3 key tenets: INQUIRY-BASED Rather than having the teacher telling information to students, students and teachers ask each other relevant questions about complex issues and collaborate with each other to locate varied sources of knowledge, information, and perspectives on those issues. INTERDISCIPLINARY A systematic effort to integrate multiple perspectives (disciplines) into a more complete framework of analysis, thus accomplishing a new understanding that could not have been created by drawing from a single discipline. INTRINSICALLY MOTIVATED A focus on the students rather than the teacher helps students to honor, to learn, to engage, to innovate, to serve, and to thrive.
FLAGSHIP COURSE: AMERICAN DESIGN JUNIOR YEAR - INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSE
In American Design, we balance tradition and innovation. Foundational skills such as reading, writing, and discussion remain at the forefront of our pedagogy as we build relevant 21st century skills such as empathy, design, and community engagement through the process of design thinking (an empathy based, human centered, interdisciplinary approach to understanding and creating solutions for real-world problems). In order to provide ample time for students to learn and to accomplish the work of American Design, students have two designated class times within a rotation. One class time is scheduled in the American Design Classroom with two teachers—one from the History department, and one from the English department. The second class time is scheduled in the common space of Cochran Library for independent and collaborative work.
CLASS OF 2021 STANDARDIZED TESTING 48% of students applied test optional to one or more schools. Of those students who did submit a score, the average ACT score was 29 and the average SAT score was 1440. Additionally, 68% of the students indicated that COVID-19 prevented them from taking the ACT and/or SAT as many times as they would have liked. Casady School
