welcome to bienvenidos A bemvindo A Another year and CASA Latin American Theatre Festival just keeps on getting bigger and better. This October, you can catch six theatre shows by some of the most exciting companies in Latin America today. From Chile, we present Viaje Inmovil’s Chef (p5); from Costa Rica, Teatro La Polea’s El Inmigrante, El Nica (p6); from Venezuela, we welcome Teatro San Martin with Passport (p7); from Argentina, Teatro Secreto bring us El Guante y La Piedra (p8); and from Brazil, we offer you Teatro em Tramite and Persona Co. de Teatro’s A Galinha Degolada (p9). The more you see, the less you pay – so why not see them all? From the UK, we’re proud to present Juana in a Million (p13) which was selected for development at last year’s Nuestra CASA Scratch Festival which returns this year (p17). Why not come and help us decide which exciting new UK-based Latin American theatre makers deserve a full show in 2012? And at the weekend, check out the brilliantly funny Código Pirata from Argentina (p11) and the magical The Boy who Caught the Tide from Brazil (p15), directed by our Guest Artist, Gaël Le Cornec. Both are great family shows and to celebrate we’ve got some brilliant ticket deals so all the family can come. With live music, poetry, visual arts, post-show discussions, workshops (p23) and delicious Latin American food served every day in our cafe, our festival calendar (p2) has it all. See you there! Hasta Pronto! Até Logo! Daniel Goldman – Artistic Director

CHEF Set in a not so distant future where poverty is king, Chef is the story of one celebrity chef’s desire to stay at the top of his game at any cost. With a splash of very black humour, a pinch of grotesque puppetry and a generous helping of satire, Chef is a delicious new take on Jonathan Swift’s famous essay “A Modest Proposal”. Viaje Inmóvil was formed by Jaime Lorca in 2005 and is regarded as one of Chile’s foremost physical theatre companies. Their three creations to date have won multiple awards and they tour regularly all over the world. They are also a resident company at Chile’s Museo de Bellas Artes.

17th 18th 19th October at 8pm Presented by: Viaje Inmóvil, Chile Cast: Daniela Montt & Jaime Lorca Director: Jaime Lorca Dramaturgy: Guillermo Calderón Set Design: Carlos Rivera-Rodrigo Ruiz Post-show Discussion: 18th October

I was lucky enough to catch Viaje Inmovil’s stunning “Gulliver” in Santiago last year. Their dark humour and brilliant technical skill should mean a brilliant start to the festival.

EL INMIGRANTE, EL NICA THE IMMIGRANT, THE NICA Based on a true story, El Inmigrante, El Nica is the story of José Mejia Espinoza, a Nicaraguan forced by poverty to emigrate to Costa Rica. Completely alone, he recounts his days to his only possession from home, a crucifix. As Jose shares his pain and hopes with his silent wooden partner, the plight of millions of immigrants around the world becomes harrowingly clear. El Inmigrante, el Nica is a new political drama by writer-performer César Meléndez, artistic director of Teatro La Polea, one of Costa Rica’s most groundbreaking companies. El Inmigrante, El Nica has been performed all over Latin America as well as the USA, France and Spain.

17th 18th 19th October at 7.45pm Presented by: Teatro La Polea, Costa Rica Cast: César Meléndez Director/Writer: César Meléndez Post-show Discussion: 19th October

Immigration is a recurring theme in the plays we receive every year but César’s play stands out as the most visceral and intelligent I’ve seen.

PASSPORT A woman arrives at an undefined Latin American border and is detained by two guards. Very quickly, all normality is stripped away leading to an unrelenting Kafka-esque descent into terror. Passport explores the idea that those state actions we would condemn are those we ourselves commit unthinkingly every day as we succumb to what Ott describes as “the dark forces that bite at, blind and finally destroy the individual . Gustavo Ott is the founding artistic director of Teatro San Martin de Caracas, Venezuela’s most important and influential new writing theatre and a vital cultural hub for its local community. As a writer, Gustavo has won numerous awards and his plays have been translated into 14 different languages to be performed all over the world by companies such as the Comedie Francaise and the Public Theatre, NYC.

22st October at 5pm 21st 22nd October at 8pm Presented by: Teatro San Martin de Caracas, Venezuela Cast: Verónica Arellano, David Villegas, Luis Domingo González Writer: Gustavo Ott Director: Luis Domingo González Set Design: Luis Cova Post-show Discussion: 22 October, after 5pm show

I started speaking to Gustavo when we were programming CASA 2008. Three years later, I’m delighted that he’s here in person with one of his most popular shows.

EL GUANTE Y LA PIEDRA THE GLOVE AND THE STONE “What do I know whether or not we choose but the fact is there are things in life you just don’t see coming... Never happened to you? Never woken up one morning, looked around and thought, when was it that I chose all of this?” Nelson Villa tells us a story about times gone by – his childhood; the day he started boxing; the day he started dancing; the day he met Andres and everything changed. A stunning performance by writer-performer Quique Fernandez, El Guante y La Piedra is Teatro Secreto’s debut show and it has already been peformed in Argentina and Spain.

21st 22nd October at 7.45pm 23rd October at 4.45pm Presented by: Teatro Secreto, Argentina Cast: Quique Fernandez Writer: Quique Fernandez Director: Rosalía Martínez Miño Post-show Discussion: 21st October

I was moved by the intimacy of this beautifully told piece. It reminded me that a personal journey can make great theatre.

A GALINHA DECOLGADA THE HEADLESS CHICKEN

Based on the eponymous short story by Uruguay’s Horacio Quiroga, A Galinha Degolada tells the story of the unhappily married couple Mazzini-Ferraz and their four mentally disabled children. When their fifth child is born, a perfectly healthy girl, the true reason for the parents’ loveless relationship emerges. The first co-production by two of South Brazil’s most exciting theatre companies, A Galinha Degolada was selected by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture to tour Brazil bringing great theatre to remote audiences across the country.

21st October at 9.45 22nd 23rd October at 3pm Presented by: Teatro em Tramite y Persona Co. De Teatro Cast: André Francisco, Gláucia Grigolo, Loren Fischer e Samantha Cohen Director: Jefferson Bittencourt Adapted by: Jefferson Bittencourt & Gláucia Grigolo

Post-show Discussion: 23rd October

Don’t miss this brilliantly dark fairytale for all ages. The visuals are stunning and you won’t hear a better original soundtrack anywhere!

JUANA IN A MILLION “Where is home? Gaël Le Cornec:

I see Theatre in Latin America as an entity that goes beyond stage and story. This is, I hope, what you will experience in this year’s programme as we combine photography with music, poetry with dancing and place tradition side by side with the cutting edge. Theatre is everywhere, just look around you.

Thank you to all of you who have already donated to CASA.

Without your generosity, we might not be here enjoying great Latin American Theatre. This year, we’ve set a ourselves a target of £5000 from individual donations. This is quite simply the amount of money we have to raise to break even this year. Of course, if we raise more, even better. At the time of this brochure going to print, we have raised just over £1900 of which £700 has been donated online. This is a brilliant start but we’ve still got a long way to go.
