our CASA is your CASA
Tryo Teatro Banda: Chile
With award-winning theatre on offer from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and the UK as well as live music, workshops, talks and events, join us as we celebrate our fifth year in style.
Troupp Pas D’Argent: Brazil
That is what this year’s festival is about.
Julio Adrião: Brazil
That the shows are so varied is not surprising. Latin American theatre is as rich and diverse as the lands and cultures from which it springs. At the same time, these companies also remind us that theatre is an art that rejoices in exploring the things we fundamentally share as human beings. In doing so, borders dissolve, stories are shared and new histories are written.
Diego y Ulises: Argentina
This question has taken us on a fascinating journey this year. From clown to musical comedy, from historical drama to political theatre, from dance to epic storytelling, we’ve never offered such a range of theatrical genres at CASA before. The same is true of the stories being told. Imaginary cities collide with historical voyages, the conquest of the Americas with the violence of the Holocaust, the plight of journalists in Mexico with the intimate lives of two young men in Buenos Aires.
La Llorona: UK/Mexico/Colombia/Brazil
How do you share the theatrical riches of a continent?
Anima Teatro: Mexico

Confined to a special cell, a female journalist has been in isolation for months. At first, it seems as though her only escape from the nightmare of her situation is from within. But soon her journalistic instincts kick in and she begins a new, terrifying investigation into the little of the world she does have access to.
Julio Adrião: Brazil
An ode to the Mexican journalists who have been abused, tortured or murdered for revealing uncomfortable truths, this one woman show is the political heart of this year’s festival.

Physical, sexy and lots of fun, the show explores the ideas that we’re told to keep locked in. This is storytelling without words; rather, everyday movements are choreographed to create a seamless continuing chain of events fuelled by the power of music. Wherever we are, our imaginations run wild and our fantasies wilder... What would happen if they actually came true?

DIEGO Y ULISES
Written by the great Italian playwright Dario Fo, this radical interpretation by one of Brazil’s leading actors, Julio Adrião, is one-man physical storytelling that needs no translation. A Descoberta das Americas is the story of the Conquest of the Americas, as seen through the eyes of Johan Padam, a good-for-nothing, who somehow finds himself sailing to the New World alongside Colombus. It doesn’t take long for Johan to be captured by an indigenous tribe and prepared for slaughter. Not only does he avoid being sacrificed, he learns the native language, joins his capturers and becomes a warrior leader against his former countrymen. Written by Dario Fo Adaptation by Julio Adrião & Alessandra Vannucci Performed by Julio Adrião Duration: 90 minutes
Directed by Alessandra Vannucci Lighting by Luiz André Alvim Produced by EmCartaz Empreendimentos Culturals
About Julio Adrião: Best known to international audiences for his role in Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, Julio Adrião is an acclaimed actor, street performer and director from Rio de Janeiro. He won the Shell Award for Best Actor in 2005 for his performance in A Descoberta das Américas. The play has been presented more than 500 times across the world to an audience of over 200,000 people. Pre-Show Talk: Sunday 16th September at 4.00pm Dr. Sergio Miguel Huarcaya from Royal Holloway will be sharing his experiences of indigenous movements in Ecuador and will be discussing the concept of anthropophagism (cultures consuming cultures) in the context of the Discovery of the Americas. A man with no memory stumbles into a strange city where only the ugliest of women live, and where no man has been seen for hundreds of years. By their rules he should be killed, but curiosity gets the better of the women and they decide to spare his life for one more day. Directed by Marcela Rodrigues Performed by Carolina Garcês, Lílian Meireles, Marcela Rodrigues, Natalíe Rodrigues, Orlando Caldeira, Zoatha David Duration: 60 mins Pre-show Talk: Sunday 9th September at 1pm The CASA 2012 programming team will read a selection of their favourite Latin American fairy-tales in English.
12th September 7.45pm (+ Post-Show Q&A) 13th September 2.15pm & 7.45pm Language No Problem Performed with great physical and musical skill, this is wordless theatre at its most moving. Six clowns are rounded up and thrown onto a train. Their final destination is unknown to them. Over the course of this journey and their subsequent detention in a concentration camp, they try to make sense of a world where anything is possible. Directed by Marcela Rodrigues Performed by Carolina Garcês, Lílian Meireles, Marcela Rodrigues, Natalíe Rodrigues, Orlando Caldeira, Zoatha David Duration: 60 minutes Pre-Show Talk: Thursday 13th September at 6.30pm Professor David Lehmann from the University of Cambridge and Comedian David Schneider will be looking at how humour fits into the context of the Holocaust in performance. 7th September 7.45pm 8th September 5pm 9th September 5pm (+ post-show Q&A) Performed in Spanish with English surtitles Discover the incredible true story of Jemmy Button through the songs and music of one of Chile’s most loved theatre companies. In 1830 Captain FitzRoy of the Beagle captured four indigenous Fuegians from the southern cone of Chile, amongst them a young boy who was given the new name of Jemmy Button. Brought to the UK to be civilized, the boy became something of a celebrity. Less than a year later, the Beagle set out on its second voyage - with an enthusiastic young naturalist called Charles Darwin on board - to take “civilized” Jemmy home... Written by Ximena Carrera Directed by Sebastián Vila Performed by Francisco Sánchez, Pablo Obreque & César Espinoza Duration: 75 minutes Pre-Show Talk: Saturday 8th September at 4pm From Tarzan to Jemmy Button to Mowgli to Caliban, it seems as though the British have always been drawn to the idea of the savage and even more so to the idea that they might be “civilized”. We’ll explore why.

The Unfinished Exploits of Pedro de Valdivia 15th September 2.15pm & 7.45pm (+ post-show Q&A) 16th September 2.15pm Performed in Spanish with English surtitles Part history lesson, part musical comedy, this show for all ages won Chile’s National Theatre Critic’s Award for Best Play in 2010. Based on the letters that Chile’s First Royal Governor, Pedro de Valdivia (1500–1553) wrote home to King Charles V, this is the remarkable story of the first thirteen years of the conquest of Chile. Three ridiculously talented actor-musicians combine live music, puppetry, physical comedy and thrilling visuals to shed new light on one of the most bloody and infamous episodes in Chile’s history. Written by Francisco Sánchez and Company Directed by Sebastián Vila Performed by Francisco Sánchez, Pablo Obreque & César Espinoza Duration: 75 minutes Pre-Show Talk: Sunday 16th September at 1pm Dr. Francisco Dominguez from the Venezuela Solidarity Group leads us in an open discussion looking into the legacy of the Conquistadors in Latin America and Europe. Nuestra CASA Scratch Night
Supported by
CASA Scratch Night is an annual competition that aims to find and support the most promising Latin American theatre makers who are based in the UK. Six companies each present a 10-15 minute work in progress of a new idea to a paying public and a panel of industry experts. At the end of the performance, while the jury retires to determine a winner, the audience give their feedback directly to the artists and we give everyone a free beer, thanks to our sponsors Cusqueña. The jury then return to announce which company or artist has won a grant of up to £5000 to develop their idea into a full-length show to be presented at CASA 2013. Now in its third year, CASA Scratch Night embodies our commitment to supporting new Latin American talent in the UK. Our first winner was Vicky Araico Casas whose Juana In A Million premiered at CASA 2011 and has just enjoyed a critically acclaimed Fringe First-winning run in Edinburgh this August. Last year’s winners La Llorona premiere Private Thoughts in Public Spaces in the main festival programme this year.
Open CASA Community Night 10 September from 6pm
CASA 2012 is delighted to present our very first Open CASA, a chance to celebrate both London’s Latin American community arts scene with the amazing people who keep Latin American culture blossoming all year round. Join us as we open our doors and get ready for a night of the sounds, sights and flavours of London’s vibrant Latin American community. There’ll be a wealth of exciting activities on offer to watch and take part in including sizzling dance courtesy of the London School of Samba, Brazilian martial arts with Centro Cultural Senzala de Capoeira, dance theatre with Inka Expression and forum theatre with Luna Playback Theatre. And if that wasn’t enough, there’ll be some fantastic live music from London’s favourite folklore band Cumbe and DJ Mr Boogie a.k.a The Vinyl Junkie (Soulsa/Shoreditch) and more! As a centerpiece for the night, leading arts activists Friction Arts will be joining us from Birmingham to put on one of their legendary community dinners. OPEN CASA is completely free but if you want to join us for the dinner, please bring a dish of your favourite food to share. We’ve said it before. We’ll say it again. Our CASA is your CASA.
CASA Music and Art If you thought CASA was just about theatre, think again: we also love a great party! Join us on Friday and Saturday nights during the festival for some late night Latin grooves en vivo, after each of the shows. The line-up includes: Wara: Combining Afro-Cuban rhythms, funk and timba, these masters of high-energy fusion will get you dancing. Cumbe: Cumbe in Colombia means party so it’s no surprise that London’s favourite five-piece folk band deliver one hell of a fiesta. Jero Ferec: Performing a special set of flamenco guitar and Latin American rhythms, discover the “rising star” of flamenco at this unique performance. Corina Piatti: Corina Patti’s original compositions combine melodic vocals and mesmerizing guitar to evoke the great Argentine and Brazilian composers.
CASA is also delighted to welcome the following artists who will be exhibiting their work at Ovalhouse for the duration of the festival: Collectivo Entre Las Piernas: Argentine poet Brunela curates El Arte Desbocado entre Las Piernas, an exhibition of erotic poetry, sculptures, photography soundscapes, graphic design and painting. Nina and Julia Miranda: Daughters of acclaimed Brazilian artists Liz Miranda and Luiz Aquila and raised in both Brazil and London, Julia and Nina’s work focuses on reusing materials such a bed-sheets, old fabrics and debris from building sites to produce pieces that “come with a story”. Kiki Machado: Contrasting the tropical colours of her native Brazil and the green and gray of her London home, London, Kiki transforms materials that would otherwise be discarded to produce striking images that reflect her passions and life experiences. Francisco Norris: Graphic designer and graffiti artist from Buenos Aires. Check out our walls!
Nuestra CASA - Our Year Round Activities CASA Radio: A collaborative effort with Aculco Radio to bring exciting new work by Latin American playwrights to the UK. The plays are recorded in their original language using Latin American actors, directors and technicians wherever possible with a new play broadcast every month. Check out our recordings on www.casafestival.org.uk CASA Classic Play Readings: Monthly readings of Latin American classics translated into English. Providing an opportunity to share some of Latin America’s greatest plays with a UK audience, the readings are directed and performed by leading theatre makers, and the series is presented in partnership with Professor Catherine Boyle from Out Of The Wings. CASA Theatre Workshops: Theatre workshops aiming to introduce members of London’s Latin American community (though, of course, everyone is welcome) to theatre and storytelling. Anyone can take part, regardless of background or experience, as the idea is to create new projects and tell new stories while having fun, learning new skills and sharing the arts in a friendly environment. Get Involved: If you would like to sign up to take part in any or all of these activities, please send Roberto an email at nuestracasa@casafestival.org.uk. We’d love to hear from you.
CASA Workshops We believe that CASA should be a space for exchange; between artists and audiences; between artists from different backgrounds; between cultures and practices. We’re therefore delighted to announce that our visiting artists will be giving a series of one-off masterclasses offering you an insight into the way that they work. 10th September 2.30pm 11th September 2.30pm 12th September 2.30pm 14th September 2.30pm
