Photography by Prue Ruscoe In the eastern suburb of Sydney of Darlinghurst, YSG Studio projected a penthouse with a colourful furnishing selections and a Rushcutters Bay view.

94 | G&G _ Magazine

The design team has decided to drop the ceiling to accommodate services in one corner of the rectangular living area, staining its timber surface black for cossetting appeal. Extending towards the lift lobby, a mechanical sliding main entrance connects the two zones, creating an intimate vestibule like lounge/library. Musk, lilac and plum are the trifecta hues within the open living area with citrus accents introduced via golden bands encircling the illuminated Murano glass totems and an amber porthole piercing the sliding entrance door.

he design team of YSG Studio has gutted the entire penthouse, from flooring to overhead lighting, transforming it into an immersiveT haven for the owners. Oversized soft landings, deep piled custom rugs and stone surfaces with planetary swirls levitate within. Counterbalancing the sobriety of the box-like architectural frame shrouded in glass, they demarcate zones within the expansive living area.

The overall scheme is literally conveyed like a colour wheel key to the home via the dining table co designed with Adam Goodrum. Its graphic wreath like exposed mortise detailing (which flows down the legs) depicts the dominant shades of the Ashome.consummate entertainers, the clients requested ”conversational custom pieces”. A ganache rich ‘wall’ of joinery forms the backdrop to the kitchen’s kinetic drama.

The watermarked taffeta-like veneer responds to the harbor's rippled surface, heightening the solid, swirling mass of the utilities bench before it. The designers clad it in mis matched oversized Lapis blue granite tiles (plus the surface of the quirky mobile drinks trolley with its integrated lamp). Cut from slabs to resolve lift height restrictions preventing the transport of solid pieces, they set the theme for graphic walls animated by glossy Moroccan tiles.

Initiating more storage was tricky with so many glass walls, so all the custom beds feature cavities beneath them to maintain the streamlined appeal of the walls.

Within the master bedroom, the upholstered bedhead with integrated side tables features stained zebra veneers crowned with Calacatta Viola marble. A solar system of blown glass lighting in berry shades orbits above. Always in the same tones, the bed lines together with the white cream rug complete the décor. This room has also been extended upon the balcony to accommodate a study nook and generous walk in wardrobe and created a verdant entertaining oasis outdoors that blocks prying eyes from neighbouring towers.

“Light, crisp layers of marble articulate the vanities in the bathrooms, wrapping around shower walls with a futuristic 2001 Space Odyssey meets Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona pavilion vibe.”

The penthouse’s material advantage comes via the use of luxe elements including marble. Applied in light, crisp layers within the bathrooms and powder room and atop coffee plus bedside tables, its gestural patterns impart a sense of playfulness. So streamlined is the vanity ledge in the master en suite with its integrated shallow sinks that its swirling veins grant the illusion of levitation. A splash back wraps around the shower recesses providing a practical ledge for accessories, ending mid gait to avoid enclosing the expansive nature of the white tiles. Flipping the materials, the guest bathroom reveals a similar layout, only Moroccan tiles replace the onyx splash back stretching across the shower wall.

This technique helped to tear the upholstered furniture from the walls and made room for free movement between the spaces. For example, the sofa by Paolo Castelli with its soft curves and light shades together with the round carpet are evident in the whole design. As well as the small round steel table that matches the floor lamp with its curved leg, also in steel. Olga Fradkina's posters are featured here as well and are accompanied by bright accents on the walls. Another element to note is the fireplace of course. Although it is small, there is a gray colored frame that infuses it and makes it very captivating.

The living room leads to the study which includes a workplace and a recreation area. The table and the lamp by & Tradition created a workplace and a comfortable upholstered chair by Artifort completed them. Bright blue textured wall panel was chosen to match the Ligne Roset sofa of the same color. While the unusually shaped Ultrafragola pink mirror brought even more playfulness to the office.

The child's room has a two story solid wood structure that includes a sleeping place, a sofa and a recreation and play area on the second floor. Circles in the shape of Vibia handles, ceiling lights and appliques support the main figure of the project. To preserve the mobility of the lighting that is important for the study and at the same time not clutter up the functional desk, the designers inscribed an Artemide guide lamp above the desk, on the ceiling.

The parents’ bedroom are in warm brown tones. The designers deliberately did not include bright color accents to make the room as recreational as possible. Letti Jack bed by Bolzan on high legs visually facilitated the bedroom space. An accent pendant lamp from Cattelan was added. The wardrobe is open with built in warm light illumination.

This balance of simplicity and complexity ensures that one does not tire of the space but constantly finds new meanings and enriched beauty that causes its aesthetic value to grow and adapt with the family’s changing needs over the years.”

The staircase leads to the second floor that opens to the lounge area with a zen touch with minimal natural tones. This area forms the highlight: an open, unrestricted habitat in which the rooms dissolve easily into each other, doorways are designed as visual portals between common spaces and create a feeling of Hiwaga as one moves between spaces.

The outdoor seating lounge has white patterned floor from rawsteen while the brick wall with concrete seating enveloped in greens. The roman bamboo blinds bathe the space in soft natural light, exposed wood rafters, raw edge & live wood log center table.

The second floor also includes the son’s bedroom. The designers opted for two types of walls: wallpaper with a checkered print on one side and the monotony of beige on the other. On the walls we also find white panels at the bottom thus creating a sense of depth. The furniture present is simple: white, with square shapes. Through the door, on which the wallpaper and panels have been applied to make it less appealing, you enter the walk in closet with a simple design. Next, there is also an attached bathroom with a terrazzo counter and natural brick tiles on the walls.

According to Zeldman, the owner loves to cook and entertain, thus the kitchen is a very active and dominant area in the home and much of the attention and investment were dedicated to its design. This is continued by an outdoor kitchen, and both are often used simultaneously.

Upon entry to the property, a large dining area is revealed a symbolic look that reflects the owners love of entertaining. An unusual large 4m long black brass table was positioned in the center of the dining area, which is located between the kitchen and the swimming pool, creating an inviting and pleasant dining experience.

“The owners are art lovers, and so a strategic corner in the lounge was dedicated to a red and white work of art created by the Israeli artist Orit Fuchs. The variety of other art pieces dotted around the house 'break' the clean white design and inject a fresh twist into the mix.”

A concealed family and TV room is located near the kitchen, also fitted with fishbone parquet. Unlike the rest of the property, this room was designed in darker tones with a luxurious leather couch, stools, and an advanced audio system. The lounge continues the kitchen’s clean design lines. A variety of harmonious seating spaces, in neutral shades, were placed in the lounge and include chaiselounges, stools and other inviting cozy areas for each and everyone of the family members. This space was designed purely for the purpose of entertaining and overlooks the garden through large windows that create a sense of space and seamless continuity between the indoors and the outdoors. A large area of the swimming pool, which isn't big and mostly used for entertaining, was dedicated to a splash pool with sunbeds. A lounging area and a dining area were designed on either side of the pool, each continuing their respective internal areas.

134 | G&G _ Magazine

The entrance to the master bedroom is through a corridor of cupboards. Those, as well as the door to the en suite, are concealed by engraved carpentry. The same carpentry design was used for the bed headboard, which is combined with hanging reading lights, as well as the cupboard fitted across from the bed. This creates a harmonious look with ample storage space.

The design concept in the couple’s large en suite is different. The space is tiled with large, thin, dark gray tiles, and the space is fitted with a dominant freestanding bath, a large shower and a granite covered cupboard.

The stairs were covered in wood that matches the parquet and continues the design thread. A glass banister, supported by hidden attachments, emphasizes the “less is more” theme. A small bridge was designed on the top level, from which the ground level can be observed and serves as a partition between the children’s wing and the parents’ wing.

A large guest suite was designed in the basement with a cozy lounge and an exit to a courtyard, to be used by their three grown children when they come to visit. Here, the design theme of the property with parquet floors continues. There are also a seating area, a bed that overlooks a courtyard, a large TV and a pampering Thebathroom.basement includes also a kitchenette and a well equipped gym. According to Zeldman, with regards to the gym, the idea was to create a sporty vibe with advanced equipment.

A garden) at the lower, original level. This causes a difference in height and light that poses design challenges and creative opportunities in equal measure especially in such a traditional house where a balance must be struck between respecting heritage and introducing modern touches.

To create an interior that fits the original architecture while freshening it up, the spatial qualities of each living area were assessed and the properties of height, light and each building structure and window shape were maximised. Fruits of this approach are perhaps most visible in the spacious kitchen and dining area at the back of the house. A low beam ceiling s you might have guessed, Dijkhuis are built next to a dyke. As building a dyke raises the ground level, it means that houses around it have a back area (and

draws you into an intimate space, where a large table makes it easy for the family to come together for a long meal or simply enjoy the view over the garden through wide French windows. In the kitchen itself a terrazzo kitchen top is matched with detailed wooden cabinets on a terracotta tiled wooden floor and a light custom porcelain cabinet made of glass, wooden profiles and white tiles.

Turning right, you enter the living room, the most lavish space in the house. Light streams in through tall arched windows that give the curved, high ceiling with art deco decorations a spacious and welcoming feel. Both the ceiling and the walls have been painted in three hues of white to enhance the room’s architectural elements. In a room with so much natural light, darker colours could be used to dramatic effect, such as on the dark herringbone floor. But all eyes will here be drawn to a monolithic walnut cabinet

142 | G&G _ Magazine

Upstairs from the kitchen the entrance hallway is on the same level as the dyke. Across the hall is a toilet decorated with square off white tiles: glossy on the wall, matt tiles on the floor. Further furnishings include wooden painted plinths, purple marble and an oak wooden toilet cabinet with brass details.

whose shape mirrors the windows opposite it. A large green sofa and a built in cocktail bar with a terrazzo top make this a room where you can relax from dusk to dawn.

The first floor hosts four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a separate toilet. To create enough space for these living arrangements, two dormer windows were installed that run along two thirds of the length of the roof. In contrast to downstairs, the floors here are lighter, with brighter colours on the walls to create a serene atmosphere. On the bedroom ceilings you’ll find details of the original beamed roof. Both bathrooms have a travertine back splash and are tiled with upright rectangular glossy tiles on the walls, and matt tiles in a herringbone pattern on the floor. Herringbone returns in the double plank parquet in the bedrooms, but in the corridors, this changes into straight planking to give the vertical dimensions of the house more character. This symbolizes the way Studio Modijefsky has paid tribute to the building’s heritage while filling it with contemporary style.
