old winter months are coming, and we need bold and fearless colours that put us in a good mood and can stimulate our creativity without setting limits. In our new Design Trends color palette (page 11) each shade represents the maximum expression of what our rebellious spirit needs to come out of it. Let's forget the stereotype according to which joyful tones should only accompany us in hot periods. From feminine Rose Violet to spontaneous Red Orange to High Visibility Yellow: the boldness of these shades is surprising and at the same time does not prevent them from easily adapting to other colors. So, if you are afraid of daring too much with these unexpected choices, you can simply add some furniture or home accessories to your interiors to maintain a light breeze of calm but with a touch of style in these days of transit. Subsequently, as in every edition, we propose you a series of interior projects that can give you greater inspiration for your new works. All of them feature an elegant and timeless design. For example, on page 48, Maria Victoria offers an interesting mix of elements and textures creating a style that can last and be fashionable for decades to come. Barbara Vucusa, on the other hand, chose to use white as a background in the Cuneo apartment to highlight the historical part of the house: the carefully restored 18th century frescoes on the ceiling (page 86). While Studio Modijefsky renovated an old building focusing on the relationship between interior and exterior, between the house and nature (page 94). As you can see there is design inspiration for everyone - hope you get a good dose of it for your new projects. Enjoy the last issue of this 2023!

THIS TANTALIZING FUCHSIA SITS BETWEEN RED AND MAGENTA AND IS ASSOCIATED WITH LOVE AND ROMANCE. IN DESIGN IT ALSO REPRESENTS A SENSE OF VIBRANCY, BEAUTY AND WARMTH. “Through all my work, I follow my instinct and it’s something my clients truly appreciate, therefore trust me completely with my design choices. As my usual approach, I took the time to listen to them, understand their desires and wishes.”
T
he clients, a couple with two children, had no specific requirements for the house. The realization of this interior object was remarkably smooth, with no notable difficulties encountered during the process. The design team's meticulous planning and attention to detail, from the initial design concept to the final execution, played a pivotal role in ensuring a seamless and trouble-free realization. The ground floor opens on a reception area which starts with a private office, a guest toilet and a checkroom. Right at the entrance the lamps by Zenca adorn the hall. These lamps are not merely lighting fixtures; they are a work of art that welcomes you into the home with a touch of elegance and sophistication. Their design, materials, and placement at the entrance make a striking first impression, setting the tone for the rest of the house. An impressive contrast between black and white was chosen for the office space, accompanied by the geometric textures of the fabrics. The design of the powder room was inspired by the African style: the urban design of wallpapers by Pierre Frey, which covers both the walls and the ceiling, goes perfectly with the custom-made wooden furniture. The French Vikings' concrete sink gives a rough touch while the fringed mirror by Hommés Studio and the African figurine create a slightly wild atmosphere.
In a second time, you can find two living rooms, a dining area and the kitchen. In the dining room the vintage chairs embellish the space - they exude a timeless charm that effortlessly blends with the overall aesthetic of the space. What makes them even more exceptional is the choice of Josef Franck fabric that adorns them, a material renowned for its quality and design. As in the powder room, the designers have ventured into the world of dark brown and chocolate tones in the kitchen. These deep, earthy colors exude a sense of luxury and timelessness, creating an intimate and indulgent atmosphere. Besides, the kitchen and the living room open on a large garden with trees. The design team has embraced a rich tapestry of warm colors, predominantly featuring shades of orange and reddish tones in the living area. These hues infuse the rooms with energy, vibrancy and a
touch of coziness. Complementing these vibrant tones are the subtle but underlying beige hues, which add balance and harmony to the overall ambiance. It's a color scheme that encourages relaxation and social interaction, making it an ideal setting for gatherings and everyday comfort. 52 | G&G _ Magazine
“We wanted this home to be a celebration of life's joys, where every corner exudes warmth and a sense of togetherness.”
A tailormade stairs lead to the second floor that is dedicated to children with two bedrooms, bathrooms and a playroom. The choice of color palette and materials in the rooms is a thoughtful blend of warmth and sophistication, designed to create an inviting and visually engaging living environment. Also, the bathroom exudes a unique blend of luxury and comfort. With its carefully curated design, its space is a sanctuary within the home where relaxation and rejuvenation take center stage.
“Also, open and transparent communication with the homeowners was crucial. Their valuable input and feedback throughout the realization phase allowed us to tailor the object precisely to their preferences.” 54 | G&G _ Magazine
The third floor is dedicated to the couple. In the master suite, the selection of colors and materials has been carefully curated not only to satisfy aesthetic preferences but also to satisfy the functional needs of each space. The design is minimalist: a bed by Pierre Frey accompanied by two shelves (which replace the nightstands) and wall lamps by Eichholtz. The camel color of the walls is echoed by the light oak of the custom-made wardrobe next door. From here you access the master bathroom where the marble used for the shower and the earthy-toned sink creates a cozy atmosphere. 56 | G&G _ Magazine
REVIVING A
N ARCHITECTURAL jewel
Local firm Note Design Studio has completely overhauled a historic 350 m² residence in central Stockholm.
T
he apartment is located within a magnificent building designed in the early 1920s by Höög & Morsing, an influential architecture practice largely responsible for the area’s present character. This building was a particularly ambitious project and seen by many as the crowning jewel in its context. Previous residents of the apartment had compromised the original interior, removing integral detailing so that what remained felt detached from the overall architecture. Note therefore set out to bring the apartment back to its former glory, creating an interior that might pass for the original – while still feeling contemporary and exceptionally comfortable today, adding sound-absorbing marble floors, mouldings informed by the eaves of the building and custom-made furniture. The residence needed to be updated with a new floor plan, making the most of the six large rooms behind the building’s facade, as well as rejuvenating the inner spaces in terms of light and function. The biggest changes were made to the practical spaces and the reception rooms. The entrance was
60 | G&G _ Magazine
awfully tight in relation to the size of the residence, so the design team rearranged the floor plan in order to create a generous atrium with clear guidance in how to navigate the apartment. In addition, the design team was very inspired by the style of the building and its context. For example, the radiator covers are balcony railings from the neighbouring building, the ceiling mouldings are similar to the eaves of the building, and the floor patterns are inspired by entrance door ornaments in the area. Since the client desired the highest standard for internal acoustics, all floors were removed, and sound-absorbing marble pebbles were incorporated. Suspended ceilings were created in all rooms. Furthermore, Note Design Studio used greyed wood to mark the private spaces in the flat and separate them from the atrium. In the living room two sofas with soft curves surround the sculptural wooden table. Next, we find the path one of the two fireplaces that are made of Brännlyckan marble in two contrasting patterns, sourced from Närke to the south of Stockholm.
The kitchen and dining area are accessed through the essential aesthetic glass doors. The white kitchen is functional and hosts many storage spaces. The dining area is characterised by the grey colour: a round table with a cone-shaped base goes perfectly with chairs with soft seats.
62 | G&G _ Magazine
“Never before have we had the opportunity to design across such a diversity of touchpoints. From the overarching strategies of space design, right down to the minutiae of the fixtures and fittings; we ensured that every single part of the interior answered to a higher purpose than a brief or concept. This was a dream project in many ways – one that challenged our creative skills on a daily basis, pushing us to the next level as a team and studio.”
“Walking through the apartment is very much a journey of discovery where every space has unique qualities influencing its design.”
64 | G&G _ Magazine
Note Design Studio custom-made a number of the furniture pieces for the home, including the wooden desk for the office, nightstands, mirrors, tables and washstands. Overall, the shared ambition of the studio and their client was to achieve an interior that sets high international standards using local materials and craft techniques to celebrate and renew a treasured space that will now live for many generations to come.
The master bedroom includes a grey bed than stands out thanks to the emerald green sheets used. A sculptural floor lamp and a patterned wooden bedside table complete the design. LED light strips hidden beneath the ceiling mouldings were used to create gradients of light and shadow on the walls. The en-suite bathroom can be accessed from the office and the bedroom. here a single Swedish marble was used as in the other two bathrooms. While in the smallest bathroom in the house the design team opted for a distinctive patchwork of waste pieces left over from the tiling of the others.

Scandinavian Retreat Studio Tilt has recently completed a luxurious 3-bedroom holiday villa, functionally and attractively furnished in Scandinavian style with subtle connections to the tropical surroundings in North Goa, India. Photography by Manthan Yadav
T
hrough large, white, arched double doors you enter directly into the living room flooded with natural light. Furniture is mostly all custom made and minimal, a central jute chevron rug ties the pieces together. As the design style suggests, the palette throughout consists majorly of shades of whites and beige, with subtle highlights in peach/ orange. Striped upholstery, patterned, geometric tiles and some quirky arts are some experimental elements that bring about a certain freshness into the space. Both the living and dining area have slim, wooden rafters on the ceiling. The central cluster of hanging lights on a sloping roof brings some warmth into the space. The cane lights are from Clay Mango while the lotus, cane floor lamp with an orange rim is from Jaypore. The designers wanted to have more inclusive spaces: hence the bench seating came about at the dining area, such that people can be a part of both sides of conversation. The black metal light is from Jainsons. A decor corner near the sofa houses ceramic decor accents, some pampas grass, and a bamboo table lamp. The living and dining space has an open kitchen. There wasn't a dedicated kitchen space actually and the space given was really tiny, but the design team managed to extend it, providing for all appliances required for a premium rental. A matching Kalinga stone was used for the kitchen countertop as well as the dining tabletop. Separating the sand-colored kitchen cabinets from Livspace is a monochrome, patterned backsplash in black and white. The designers wanted the design elements to really stand out as the highlights, so in a deliberate attempt, the designers didn't add too many eye-catching art forms and stuck to simple frames, albeit with some fun, colored art in spots. The lighting 70 | G&G _ Magazine
throughout the villa is also very minimal, mainly accentuated by accent lighting: hanging or floor lamps. The art has been largely sourced from Calcuttan Gallery & the Kulture shop.
“Teak wood rafters add to the feeling of warmth and perfectly compliment the elegant pitch of the roof. The soft, warm lighting scheme chosen is an extension of the overall tone-on-tone aesthetic and sets the right mood for the villa.”
72 | G&G _ Magazine
Folding wooden louvered doors lead from the dining space to the ground floor bedroom. A leafy wallpaper in black & white greets you upon entry. The furniture is entirely in wood and rattan, in soft curves. An interesting element used here is the open wardrobe, where a large, middle section is kept open for hanging clothes, flanked by a closed section on either side. This perfect balance of open and closed portions flows within the minimalistic Scandinavian compass. The space has been accessorized with some décor accents, small plants, books and a few knick-knacks. The bench set up in the balcony outside makes for a perfect, cosy spot to enjoy your morning coffee amidst lush greens. The bathroom was re done totally, using grey terrazzo tiles. The designers tore down a heavy, conventional staircase and went in for a sleek, floating, wooden staircase that adds to the unobstructed openness. It leads to the second floor where we find a den-like lounge space converted into a third bedroom, with glass walls that make for a visual connection between the spaces. The color palette is largely white, with a fun, monochromatic wallpaper for backdrop. With a lounge chair that makes for a quiet, reading nook in one corner, this den doubles up as an additional bedroom. The flooring here is wooden, which gives the necessary warmth to the space and breaks the patterned tile effect in the lower floor as well as the top floor bedroom. A chest of drawers added for storage purposes instead of a traditional wardrobe.
“We wanted a very open, inclusive space in a very subtle, Scandinavian sort of design style, with a neutral, color palette. We also tried to bring about a beautiful blend of form and function, such that the spaces would ref lect being true to the design style.”
“The sophistication of the aesthetic comes from its warm, earthy color tones and soft lighting that highlights the 'less is more' ideology.”
The primary bedroom on the upper floor is a delight, with gorgeous, terrazzo floor tiles, locally sourced and black-stained furniture, the stark contrast really making the space come alive. A rattan bed flanked on both sides by minimalistic side tables in curves, stands in the centre of this double heighted bedroom with floating, wooden rafters on the ceiling. The lamps are from Akway and
the gorgeous art in black and pink from Calcuttan Gallery. The focal point in the room, however, is the wooden, arched wardrobe designed in cane weaving, with a black, metal clothes rack next to it, as the open hanging space for clothes. Opposite, stands a small work desk, perfect for those who wish to work when away and overlooks the expanse outdoors.

YSG STUDIO TRANSFORMED A THREE-STOREY FAMILY HOUSE BLANKETED WITHIN OPPRESSIVE GREY WALLS AND ENCLOSING PARTITIONS INTO A TACTILE HAVEN WITH INCREDIBLE VIEWS OF SYDNEY HARBOUR. Photography by Anson Smart

kin to hotel delights, entry points of this 345 m² house nourish a sense of arrival, welcoming surprises. Brightening the upper level’s entrance (given the home’s sloped hillside location), a new feature glass brick wall abuts the redesigned staircase, its offset amber seam adding a sunny disposition on overcast days. Descending the stairs, pale timber 78 | G&G _ Magazine
treads switch to stained ebony, acknowledging the transition to the living area where a rich subaquatic world of teal highlights float beneath the toffee ceiling that melts across the balcony, visually expanding the room’s footprint. Scale was important given its restricted space, so the designers selected one sofa and a chair devoid of arms. Given this corner was exposed to ample sunlight, teal curtains cool its composure as do black mosaics cladding the fireplace and floor. Timber shelving draws the eye upwards to emphasise the vertical volume of the space, cosying the room without enclosing it. Other space enhancing features include oversized pivot timber doors that soften angled margins and expand the dimensions of the rooms, plus tactical
positioning of mirrors, most noticeably along the living area’s rear wall where curved Poplar Burl cupboard doors bracket mirrored doors. Performering triplicate roles, they amplify the dimensions of the living area, bounce natural light throughout and reflect harbour views.
Whilst no quantum structural additions were required, the transformative alterations were made within the main living area that required innovative structural support solutions. Internal space was sacrificed to enlarge the balcony 80 | G&G _ Magazine
entertaining area given a curved glass alcove originally housing a dining table significantly encroached upon it, dividing the outdoor space into two small and under-used areas. Removing this bulge was integral to the home’s re-design. The
designers installed glass sliding doors, aiding access to the generous rectangular area (especially from the kitchen), and created an outdoor lounge setting within the reclaimed real-estate. Additionally, two central partition walls were demolished, and the interior walls replaced with structural steel modifications that blend into the space. A smoky quartz glass brick partition frames three steel mullions, masking their architectural purpose. Golden light now filters through the room, also cosying the new dining area. Beside it, a lithe circular teal column performs an additional supportive role. Standing parallel to enhance its sculptural appeal, a canary yellow light pole spans floor to ceiling like a beam of sunlight. Adding monochromatic magic with its shimmering black mosaics and leathered marble, the island bench is like a giant reef. Glowing glass bricks aid surface relief dividing the seating from meal preparation areas and storing cooking aids amongst integrated shelving. The mosaics extend onto the floor like a path across the length of the room framing the glass doors, enticing outdoor activity by flowing across the balcony’s floor. Combined with the dark timber floors and ceiling, they provide sheltered respite from the brilliant glare and frenzied harbour activity, enabling the room to take an inward-looking approach. The house is full of precious personal spaces among which we find the service bathroom characterized by a customized sink made of Artedomus Stone Tiberio combined with Bisanna Tiles Rosso Travertine mosaic tiles.
82 | G&G _ Magazine
In the lower level the design team reduced the size of the children’s rumpus room by relocating one wall. This allowed to increase the laundry’s size and enabled a door to connect the guest bedroom directly to the bathroom. In addition, another room was converted into a private office. Floors are clad with clay tiles, whilst the teal shades from above transition to deep greens and ocean blues. At the back of the house we find a garden and the adjacent swimming pool: here the gray wooden cladding and surrounding hard surfaces have been replaced with light flooring to unify the area, adding a fire pit and an alcove with cushioned seating to encourage the perennial entertainment. Clunky glass balustrades were replaced with custom rounded, blackened steel posts to enhance views of the harbor and safe open areas. Maintaining the amoebic profile of the pool, a cantilevered platform was designed that supports an upholstered sofa that extends on a curve, refreshing the scene with a retro Palm Springs feeling.
84 | G&G _ Magazine
“Restricting overhead lighting to the hard-working areas, myriad sculptural pendants, sconces and lamps emit intimate warm glows at head-height, providing atmospheric calm.” The master suite required substantial reconfiguration to maximise wardrobe space and introduce practical navigation. A pony wall now frames the bedhead enabling additional joinery behind it, connecting to the existing walk-in-robe via a new entry (originally, it could only be accessed from the en-suite). Removing awkward furnishings within the room’s adjoining glass alcove, the designers included a curved sofa with a soft alpaca and wool herringbone weave lining, plus nubby woven wool on the neighbouring swivel chair. While the en-suite's lilac joinery internals reference the Jacaranda trees surrounding the home.

THE ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER BARBARA VUCUSA RENOVATED AN 82 M² APARTMENT LOCATED IN THE HISTORICAL BUILDING KNOWN AS PALAZZO TORNAFORTE IN THE HISTORIC CENTER OF CUNEO, ITALY.

B
uilt in the mid-17th century by the architect Francesco Gallo, the building hosts the apartment on the first floor. Before the design and renovation intervention, the large living room was divided into a corridor, living room and kitchen, with the presence of false ceilings and diversification
in the tiled flooring dating back to the 70s. By eliminating the false ceiling, frescoes from the 18th century were discovered and rediscovered and have been accurately restored to their original design and colouring. There was no longer any trace of the ancient pavement. Which is why Barbara creating a new resin floor, inserting natural aggregates in order to obtain a floor as close as possible to the ancient grit, which could interface with the frescoes of the vaults, without either of them prevailing over the other. The effect obtained is particularly pleasant as it gives the apartment a fresh and light appearance. This flooring is present throughout the apartment, without interruption or changes in material or colour. The entrance opens directly onto the living room with a view of a sofa with soft, enveloping lines, for which particular shades and textures have been chosen for the covering fabrics. Glimpses and cracks between the various rooms of the house intrigue and go beyond their simple function of passage, hosting customdesigned furnishings and guaranteeing lively perspectives. The boiserie in the living room and the lamps positioned on the sides of the TV frame the area, giving it a particular artistic connotation.
“The project, while respecting the needs of the client, wanted at the same time to bring the apartment back to its original and sumptuous appearance, restoring the characteristics of elegant halls to the living room, allowing those who enter to breathe a little of the atmosphere of period buildings.” 88 | G&G _ Magazine

The kitchen, the dining table and the furnishings have been tailored for the client and designed on the spaces, in order to almost not perceive the passage from one area to another while maintaining each of them its function. The clean lines of the custom-made furnishings alternate with the fuller and more sumptuous forms of the design furnishings, such as the Louis XIV chairs by Kartell and the golden and ashlar sideboard by Cattelan, chosen to balance and fill the rooms with their presence. Every little detail has been taken care of.
The guest bathroom is a blend of strong and delicate, masculine and feminine elements that harmonize with each other. As a cladding in the bathroom, on the entire wall behind the shower and sanitary fixtures, strips of different sizes and color shades have been made of resin, creating the right scenography in a bathroom with an irregular plan with indirect and almost liquid natural light, but scenically very present. Behind the pair of customdesigned washbasins, two full-height backlit mirrors amplify and expand the space.
The plan distribution of the bedroom is unusual; due to its conformation, it was divided, through two wings, into three distinct areas: bed, walk-in closet, private bathroom. The partition behind the bed hides the walk-in closet. From the bed you can enjoy the view of the free-standing tub 92 | G&G _ Magazine
enhanced by wallpaper (limited edition series by Inkiostrobianco), to recreate an elegant and cosy ambiance with a reference to what were once the bathrooms of stately homes of the time. Behind this second backdrop we find the private bathroom with floor sink and antique mirror.

ith its 221 m² the house is located in the middle of a green oasis, with a river on one side and an orchard and garden on the other. In its previous incarnations it has been an inn, bakery and café, resulting in lots of small rooms spread across different levels. A desire to transform it into a modern family home required a rebuild from the ground up. All that would remain would be the 17th century façade. As it was impossible to extend the boundaries of the house, Studio Modijefsky was involved from the start to ensure the space’s maximum potential

could be realised for a family that loves gardening, cooking and entertaining. The small rooms have been replaced with an open design that makes the most of the views around the house, culminating in a floor-to-ceiling glass façade at the back. This stunning vista reveals the heart of the creative concept: the lush, verdant fields enveloping the house. Everything has been done to bring their natural beauty indoors, whether through one of the many windows or via green accents in the terrazzo, tiles or painted walls. As the house enjoys uninterrupted 360° views of its environs, windows were positioned to ensure that natural light flows in at every part of the day. A neutral colour palette compliments the greenery, in a small range of materials and colours that create a coherent interior with subtle differences across the rooms and floors. The central hallway offers an immediate overview of the home’s split levels: a large staircase leads upstairs; a small stairway descends to the wine cellar in the basement; a chimney, covered with handmade cream-coloured tiles, climbs all the way up to the roof to connect all three levels. The hallway’s height, reaching up to two storeys, gives this wide corridor an intimate feel, before it narrows into a small passage that leads to the main living space. In line with the design concept, the first thing you see when arriving in the hallway is a wall in a dark bottle green shade. Light flowing in from the back façade entices you to turn the corner and enter the heart of the home: the living, dining and cooking area. To reach it, you cross a poured floor, which is a warm grey colour. It is the same throughout the entire ground floor, connecting each space and establishing a welcoming atmosphere. At the back, a huge earthy-toned sofa is welcomes you.
The kitchen is an inviting open-plan space with a cooking island that has a terrazzo top. As with the terrazzo for every Studio Modijefsky project, this is a carefully composed blend for which the colour, cement and stones are chosen to create a different result every time. The walls and the counter positioned against the back wall are lined with the same terrazzo blend, which is also used to frame the windows here. The kitchen merges seamlessly into a dining area next to the floor-to-ceiling glass façade. All the doors in the façade can be opened, so on a summer’s day it feels like you’re in the middle of nature. In a few seconds you can pop outside to pick some herbs from the garden while cooking, go for a stroll to look at boats on the river, or enjoy a dinner party on the terrace. The laundry room has been inserted right behind the kitchen where the custom-made furniture along the entire height of the wall is identical to the kitchen. The same terrazzo top was also used for the counter.

The more private areas of the home are located behind the living room wall, which also features a large custom cabinet. The master bedroom and bathroom are finished in a palette of subtle greens, two tones of wood and handmade tiles. The bathroom features a different terrazzo blend than the kitchen, with green, warm white and pink pastel marbles that blend nicely with the surrounding colours. It's used for the sink and counter-top of an eyecatching block that serves as washbasin and countertop. In the master bedroom custom wooden cabinets, a tall mirror, rustic plaster, and an elegant wooden bedframe are
complimented by playful bed lights on each side of the bed. The final room on the ground floor is a study, located behind the chimney on the other side of the house. It’s set on a spilt level and accessed via a wooden staircase. Unlike the rest of the ground floor, the study has a wooden floor, marking it out as a space for solitude. Custom furniture facilitates working days during the week, and contemplation and concentration the rest of the time. A built-in fireplace creates a snug mood, best enjoyed from a comfortable seat from which you can savour the fire and a peaceful view of the river Vecht.

An elegant wood-finished staircase takes you the first floor, which hosts two children’s bedrooms, a bathroom and toilet. To create a characterful atmosphere and provide much needed storage space, Studio Modijefsky wanted to make the most of the light and height provided by a sloping roof. The angle of the roof allows light accents at the top and discreet storage cabinets beneath, which line the hallway connecting the rooms. A neutral colour Narrow wooden planks were used for the flooring to create a more intimate feeling than the poured floor downstairs. The bathroom has a more outspoken green colour palette applied over a range of tiles and a terrazzo sink.
