Magic realism

As a museum for modern, contemporary, and applied art and design with a specific focus on female artists, Museum Arnhem has one of the most important cultural collections in The Netherlands. Studio Modijefsky was commissioned to design the new public spaces in the renovated museum: the general entrance, café, and shop on the ground floor; and an activity room plus event space on the first floor. All these spaces rotate around the museum’s iconic dome. To unite the areas spread across this cavernous expanse, Studio Modijefsky created a new design language inspired by aspects of the building’s past and present: its origins as a gentleman’s club; and the Magic Realism that is part of the museum’s current collection.

The owners had lived amongst its oddly configured dark and pokey rooms with no coherent navigation (particularly downstairs) and were intent on colonising open space to create a combined kitchen, dining and living area in the original shopfront area as they had no formal living room on the ground floor. A nineties renovation tarnished the interiors with austere, office-like appeal. Resolving this, all joinery was removed, and every piece of furniture replaced. one can glimpse the ideology of the project, according to which a “wall” has the ability to do more than just being a space definer. In this case, the father of the couple has lost his eyesight and uses surfaces to identify his location or uses the wall as language to guide him walking through the living space to the entry door of the apartment. The wall also ensconces lights in its folds which are fabricated to the exact diameter it can hold. It additionally provides a feature of a planter box in metal, a drop down counter and storage. “The wall” architecturally is an integral element of a space and maximizing its potential is an endeavor in this project. The furniture has been exquisitely chosen from the international brands like the lovely curved sofa from Secolo, the dining table and chairs from Cattelan Italia while the sofas by Pinakin Design Studio have been refurbished. The carpets are from the Pure Concept Home and so are the cushions on the sofa. There is a bench made of metal from Formus that matches Flos' chandelier and light fitting. The red artwork and sculpture is from TARQ Art Gallery.

"The clients were quite lenient and trusted us with the whole conceptualization and design elements. The apartment was up for interior work for the second time so we had to completely redo it. The only thing we reused were two sofas from Pinakin and restored the parents' walk in wardrobe."

These curvaceous lines and the sense of embrace they create at the entrance give way to the rectilinear layout of the main living spaces as you progress into and through the house and towards the view in a sequence from grounded, enclosed experience to airy and elevated. The main lounge is positioned in a cantilevered glass box at the front of the house that projects outwards to embrace the view. lluminated by the special natural light that just the riverside cities possess, this London interior presents a raw and brutal space, carved with lights and shadows. All of this inspired Francesco Meneghello's visionary creativity and fostered his attitude to multiply suggestions through minimal details, composing a narrative that is never unique but free and multifaceted. The living area is an open space, illuminated by the wide windows typical of industrial archaeology. The choice of arranging the furniture along an ideal central axis naturally organizes the space and creates an orderly visual continuity. The huge modular (leather) sofa in seventies style embraces the lounge area. With its curved line, it introduces the

feeling of a more intimate dimension where objects defined by a powerful artistic expressiveness are perfectly at ease, as the provocative presence of a wall carpet inspired by the famous painting by Gustave Courbet, L'Origine du monde.

A transparent separation element suggests the direct relationship between the living and the night area, removing every visual and conceptual barrier. The large marble table represents a rational element of classic balance, rigorously proportioned to the space. It is designed to dialogue with some iconic design pieces still able to fascinate, like the surrealist-inspired wall lamp. More than essential and almost invisible, the kitchen is a perfect expression of geometric abstraction; no functional element is visible, forcing the perception of emptiness.

84 | G&G _ Magazine

The presence of an old olive tree emphasizes the sacredness of nature. The seat around the tree has got the symbolic energy of a mystical space for meditation and contemplation, energy made even stronger by the "not-mirror mirror" deforming the context. The staircase, composed by detached elements, is a free tribute to Carlo Scarpa's visionary design of

the Olivetti showroom in Venice. The staircase leads to a mezzanine floor that expresses the intimate and silent atmosphere of a museum space. Two armchairs and a painting, nothing else is required to get into a soft and suspended dimension of dialogue with art, suggesting an ideal connection between the spaces of sociality and the personal domestic spaces.

The first of the private environment is a large dressing room inspired by the atmosphere of Berlin's avant-garde boutiques. Exhibited as in a window, the outfit steals the spotlight in the mise en scène, surrounded by retro inspired display cabinets and futuristic furnishings. The master bedroom has a monastic essentiality. It is a shelter and an alcove. With its essential and geometric design inspired by the Japanese aesthetics, the bed is the heart of the space. A work, realized by the Informal Italian artist Alberto Burri in the second post war period, oversees the most intimate area of the house. In a curious creative game based on contrasts, the rational image of the bed acts as a counterpoint with the marble sink that introduces to the en suite

Designing whimsical dreams

Imagine, studio design by Mélodie Violet, renovated an old house for a young family in Ville MontRoyal, a prominent district of Montreal.

The entrance space transitions to a main floor characterized by a warm and contemporary feel, with the abundant presence of wood, including oak engineered flooring, abundant brown walnut, black stained oak, and hickory. The rear extension was designed to seamlessly blend into the original structure, and it houses the upstairs master suite, the main level dining room, and portions of the home’s generously spacious kitchen. SubZero built in appliances set the tone of the light and spacious kitchen, anchored by a brown walnut island topped by an elegant quartzite. Above the island, a selection of small hand blown glass lights, set at varying levels, beautifully illuminate the functional cooking area. Overhead cupboards above a grey quartzite backsplash feature a brown walnut finish. Matte black stained oak denotes the cabinet doors below the sink and extends fluidly to an adjacent integrated pantry.

with Mélodie Violet on multiple designs projects already, the designer was given carte blanche to create an ambiance consistent with their wishes. The couple wanted to invest in quality materials and unique design elements, presenting Imagine with the challenge of finding the right materials for the right space, while ensuring the presence of subtle links throughout. In addition to a complete interior renovation of the existing premises, the mandate included the creation of a new extension on the rear of the house, a new double garage, and a new landscaping layout.

Upon entering the home, subdued Foscarini wall lights illuminate an elegant landing marked by the subtle replication of curves in its design elements. A large wool bench adorns the geometric flooring of herringbone tiles, embraced by a backdrop

“The lamps themselves are very minimalist, yet they provide a very colorful and artistic background. At night, they make a significant contribution to the overall atmosphere of the space.”

The kitchen opens to an expansive dining room, with floor-to-ceiling windows and patio doors providing abundant daylight and external garden views. Red-hued chairs designed for comfort surround a large table surface, with two transparent mesh lighting fixtures set above. Three elliptical wall lamps double as works of art, including two reddish toned shapes that match the dining room chairs. The living room offers an array of subdued tones, including beige herringbone fabric couches, designed by Mélodie Violet, that link to the pattern of the floor. A TV centers a large, dark brown walnut wall unit with

open shelving for art on the right, and a gas fireplace encased in black marble to the left. In the center of the room, a large wood coffee table with black metal frame ties the room’s contemporary comforts together in an ambiance conducive to both entertaining and family time. An open office area has also been inserted near the dining room and living room, just behind the fireplace.

“Each room of the house is a very unique space, but we strived to ensure that the colors and materiality would provide links between them all. One example is our decision to insert double brass lines in the floor of the dining room, which provides a sort of visual delimitation in lieu of a rug.”

94 | G&G _ Magazine

The double brass lines of the dining room floor extend to the base of the staircase, characterized by the contemporary transparency of its glass walls, its metal railings, and its dark oak stairs. The staircase leads to an upper level where Mélodie Violet waved a magic wand of creativity to capture the imaginations of the clients and their two young daughters. For the adults, the master suite incorporates comforts reminiscent of a luxury hotel, including ash blue velvet bedding by Ligne Roset, flanked on both

sides by custom hickory bedside tables and a luminous wall of gold velvet wallpaper. A sliding oak door divides the master bathroom into two distinct areas, with design links flowing into both. A slab of black marble flooring is replicated in herringbone patterns on the side walls of two large quartz vanities, while the shower features a black varnished chevron mosaic. Additionally, a freestanding tub is framed by a large slab of greyish marble, mounted like a work of art against a backdrop of waxed concrete walls.

“The rooms are very busy, but it works well when you pull it all together. The girls absolutely love their new rooms, and the entire family is now embraced by the warmth and comfort of a home designed by their desires.”

96 | G&G _ Magazine

For Mélodie Violet, carte blanche to create a world of fantasy for the bedrooms of two young girls was a particularly enticing challenge. The first room features a theme of cherry and gold, with a single wall adorned in dark framboise wallpaper. The adjoining bathroom carries the color scheme forward with infusions of gold, brass, and pink elements. The second child’s bedroom is highlighted by wallpaper featuring gold bubbles on a white background, which gently contrasts with custom designed cherry and pink curtains. The second bathroom provides more of a calming ambiance, with gold touches and textured white wall paneling. Both bathrooms feature rose gold and brass fittings, as well as small round mosaics and light terrazzo flooring.
