rk
1 clear-pitched bell or crotale – played with thimble-tipped finger 3 tea bells of different sizes 3 small shakers of different sizes and types – gourd, maraca, egg shaker, etc 1 small tambourine that I hope you would play shaking but could be hit with a thimble 1 sleighbell - small, hand-held 3 woodblocks of different sizes, ideally played with thimble-tipped fingers

The set up for each player should be identical. The thrill of this piece – such as it is – is in seeing two great players make superfast articulations that alternate oddly between exact and almost exact; because of this, it is necessary for the placement of instruments to be identical between the players. The effort needed to play the piece is a kind of theater. It can happen that the players set the instruments up in such a way that they become accustomed to and maybe even comfortable with their placement; in this case I would urge the players to shift the instruments so that they become uncomfortable once again – the sight of the players stretching to reach farther and farther away from themselves, almost in unison with each other, is the central action of the piece.

Writing table of contents was suggested to me by the percussion duo formed by Doug Perkins and Todd Meehan, both of whom I knew well from their days as members of So Percussion. My original idea for the piece was a visual image that reminded me of the television variety shows of my youth - someone would come out onstage and make music by picking up an odd array of noise makers, in lightning succession, all of which produced sound in different ways. When I presented this piece to Todd and Doug I mentioned that I imagined that all the odd objects in the piece should be set out on a table, to be picked up and animated in turn. They told me I was crazy. So we suspended the instruments on racks instead. But the idea of the table and its contents remains, if only in the title. At Ohio State University in May 2011 percussionists Susan Powell and Joe Krygier performed table of contents on tables, as I had originally imagined. I was very, very happy to learn that my original idea was not nearly as crazy as we all thought. table of contents was commissioned by a consortium of excellent percussionists: The Meehan/Perkins Duo – Todd Meehan and Doug Perkins; Coalescence – Judy Moonert and Greg Secour; Matthew McClung and Lisa Nicol; Ian Antonio; Greg Beyer; Michael Correa; Matthew Duvall; Russell Greenberg; and Yu-Chun Kuo. table of contents should last about 8 minutes.
