The Spring Institute in Educational Fundraising is part of the educational programme offered by CASE for professionals working in fundraising and development. The Institute offers a week of intense learning, networking opportunities and valuable advice designed to motivate, enthuse and inspire.
Course content The Spring Institute in Educational Fundraising meets the needs of early career professionals. Attendees benefit from the professional knowledge of the Institute tutors as well as the opportunity to discover, debate and deliver on new ideas. Switching on to regular giving
Towards ethical intelligence
Learn more about the fundamentals of regular giving, develop your ideas on how best to connect with potential donors and explore effective means to benchmark your results. Come away with a better understanding of the current trends, share practical tips and bust a few myths along the way.
Fundraising organisations are accountable for the way they run their business, the gifts they do (and don’t) accept and the behaviour of their people. That can be scary! Equip yourself for a career as a development professional in this lively, scenario-based session. You’ll leave with a wider understanding of real-life ethical challenges and the tools to deal with them when encountering such dilemmas in the future.

The anatomy of major gifts Shed light on the world of major gifts through the lens of institutional culture, the cultivation process and the skills needed to make a good fundraiser. The course tutors will identify and offer solutions to common challenges faced by major gifts fundraisers. This session is delivered by Lorna Somers, Vice President, McMaster University Foundation, Director of Development, McMaster University, Canada, and Mark Curtis, Director of Development, New College, University of Oxford, UK.

Campaigns How do campaigns work? What is necessary for success? What does success look like? Identify the key questions you and your institution will need to ask, and answer, before embarking on a campaign. This session is delivered by Kirsty MacDonald, Director of Development, University College Relations, University of Cambridge, UK and Chris Yates, Director of LSE Advancement, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK.
Around the world of fundraising and philanthropy Drawing from his experience as a grant-maker, academic and now a development professional, Robert Dufton shares his expertise and advises on higher education philanthropy. This session is delivered by Robert Dufton, Director of Campaigns, University of Sheffield, UK.

Speakers Robert A. Burdenski Principal Robert Burdenski Annual Giving Chicago resident Bob Burdenski is an internationally-recognised expert, author and consultant in annual and regular giving fundraising strategies. He has worked with more than 200 institutions.
Mark Curtis Director of Development New College, University of Oxford, UK Prior to joining New College in April 2011, Mark Curtis was the development director at Oriel College, Oxford for six years. His previous experience includes running the development programme at Christ’s Hospital, a boarding school and corporate fundraising at London Business School.
Sam Davies Director of Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement University of Brighton, UK
Director of Development, University College Relations University of Cambridge, UK Kirsty MacDonald has almost twenty five years of fundraising experience in North America and the UK. Kirsty joined Cambridge in 2015 as the Dear World, Yours Cambridge campaign for £2billion was launched. Previously Kirsty was executive director development & alumni at the University of Edinburgh where she led a team of 50 staff covering all aspects of development and alumni activity.
Joanna Motion Partner More Partnership Joanna Motion started her career with Oxfam, and worked for 20 years for universities in the UK and Australia. Joanna joined More Partnership in 2011. She is the lead writer of the 2012 HEFCE “Review of Philanthropy in UK Higher Education”.
Jennie Moule
Sam Davies’ first foray into fundraising came at the University of Warwick as a caller for its first-ever telephone campaign in 1997. After spending two years as a consultant, Sam returned to Warwick to run its campaigns and annual giving activities. Sam is now Director of Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement at the University of Brighton.

Corinne Degoutte has worked in the education and private sectors in the UK, France and Germany. She was head of the MBA international luxury brand management at ESSEC before beginning her career in fundraising at Institut français des relations internationals (IFRI). Degoutte joined Fondation ParisTech in 2007. She is now Director of Strategy at École des Ponts ParisTech.

Kirsty MacDonald
Jennie Moule has managed development operations at UCL for nearly ten years and oversees research, database, gift administration, budgeting, HR and facilities. She is responsible for coordinating and implementing strategy and planning.
Lorna Somers has been working in university advancement at McMaster University since 1988. Lorna’s achievements include securing the largest cash gift to a Canadian university.
