Welcome

Your Personal Programme Planner

from the Conference Chair

Use this page to plan your conference sessions.

Dear Colleagues, The warmest of welcomes to CEAC 2016. We welcome delegates from over 35 countries, covering every continent on the world. Whether you have travelled a dozen or a thousand miles to be with us, you couldn’t be more welcome as we come together in challenging times, where positivity is in short supply. We’re good at positivity, and it’s needed. Right now.

now more than ever is fresh, bold and innovative thinking. We need to anticipate and address rapidly changing perceptions and expectations relating to the role of educational institutions in our societies. And we need to stretch everyone’s imaginations – within and beyond campus – in terms of the contribution each of the advancement disciplines can make.

While ostensibly a ‘European’ Conference, CEAC has increasingly become the global meeting place for advancement professionals, bringing together practitioners and thought-leaders from West and East. In a world where individual countries and indeed continents are threatened with social and constitutional dissent and fracture, there has never been a more important time to think globally, beyond borders, at the very heart of Europe.

In communications, how do we encourage stakeholders to see the benefit and impact of our institutions’ work in completely new ways, in a social media world where trust is too often threadbare, and cynicism too easily contagious? In alumni relations, how do we accelerate the move from pleasant connections to deep and meaningful engagement in priority programmes on our campuses? How do we connect graduating cohorts with our global alumni bases to make a positive difference in the world, individually and collectively? In fund-raising, how do we continue to meet ever-more stretching targets, while maintaining the focus on the motivations of the donor, and the role of philanthropy in accelerating and deepening the difference our institutions make in a changing world?

A word of warning. Anyone heard telling the old joke that CASE stands for ‘Copy and Steal Everything’ will be referred to a Conference disciplinary committee. Of course we are here to learn from and with each-other. That is one of the joys of the Conference. But what our institutions need

Monday 29 August

Wednesday 31 August

Thursday 1 September

Energy levels will, as always at CEAC, be prodigiously high over the next few days, as we reconnect with each-other, combining good humour with serious thought as we look ahead together.

our people? • What are the consequences?

Introducing Kotter’s 8 steps to successful change leadership. • Successful change leaders start with the end in mind • What is the significance of the change vision? • Are you a change advocate? • Are you a role model for change behaviours and do you work collaboratively to build commitment?

The pace of world change is accelerating at an ever increasing rate; and that change offers both opportunities and threats. We will make the case for positive and confident change leadership. There are many aspects to the leader’s role during a period of change. He or she has to manage the personal impact of change on themselves as well as playing a vital part in helping others to acknowledge, understand and accept change. • The psychology of change – threat / reward responses • Important key behaviours when leading through change • Use of Change models – working towards a ‘change culture’ in our working environment where we work to release potential in people performance

Tweeting about my generation: strategies for engaging with today’s multiple generations There are currently five generations rubbing shoulders together in the workplace, but this is where the similarities end. Each of these generations has its own unique generationally-specific characteristics, its own communication preferences, even its own language. Learning to decode the key generational ‘trigger points’ offers numerous benefits, not just for professionals but also for organisations. The aim of this presentation is to provide delegates with a fascinating, no-holds-barred insight into the dominant characteristics of the five generations currently at work, with a special focus on Generation Y and the Millennials. You will never look at students and graduates in the same way again! Paul Redmond, Director of Student Life, The University of Manchester, UK ROOM: Hall 400 Sponsored by

An interactive session; what is our experience of well/ poorly led change? • An invitation to share organisational change experiences

Building universities’ reputation Universities operate on a global stage without borders, where reputation has become a key factor in attracting students, researchers, professors and funding. Therefore, reputation is an intangible asset with tangible results; it is the consequence of the positive perceptions of all stakeholders, from prospective students to employers, from peers to academic agencies. Rankings play an increasingly significant role in this context. University leaders often ask questions regarding the main components of a good university reputation; how the management of elements so various as teaching quality, relevant research, student satisfaction and employer perception are to be integrated; how intangible assets may be encompassed by university governance activity; and how strategic communication management may contribute to improving reputation. In this session, Professor Mora will combine an academic approach with practical expertise to offer a 3600 view of university reputation. Juan Manuel Mora, Vice President of Communication, University of Navarra, Spain ROOM: Silver Hall Sponsored by

Integrated advancement: benefits and challenges “The right way to organise advancement is whatever works for your institution. If it isn’t working right, adjust it. The road ahead will require both flexibility and agility so that everyone can innovate and move forward.” Larry D. Lauer Author of The Transition Academy: Seizing Opportunity in the Age of Disruption, CASE Currents, August 2015 Full engagement of the institution’s community, capturing the heart and soul of its history and culture, and moving the philanthropic culture forward to a full transformation and realisation of future potential, is every advancement professional’s dream. The reality is a complex ever-changing set of dynamics, relationships and expectation management with multiple internal and external stakeholders of the organisation. If the synergies and collaborative approaches are realised, the institution can soar forward. But so much depends on the mind-set and personalities of key individuals. This fireside chat panel will invite the unique perspectives of a donor/alumnus/volunteer of an international business school community; a vice-chancellor of a major comprehensive university; an experienced communications, advancement and fundraising professional and the vice president for global engagement of CASE to explore the question: are the great potential benefits of integrating the advancement culture across all stakeholder groups worth the efforts required? Dirk Luyten, President, INSEAD Alumni Association of Belgium; Karen Cairney, Former Director External Relations & Communications, Edinburgh Napier University, UK; Professor Anton Muscatelli, Vice Chancellor and Principal, University of Glasgow, UK; Tricia King, Vice President Global Engagement, CASE Chaired by Joanne Shoveller, Associate Dean, INSEAD, France ROOM: Copper Hall Sponsored by

Governments, business and private donors: a Holy Trinity or an axis of evil? Universities face enormous and increasing pressures from every side. Fiscal constraint, focus on accountability, return on investment and value for money audits, rising tuition costs, heightened expectations about the purpose of universities in research and teaching and the knowledge explosion, threaten the very fabric of universities.

Thank you for your gift and here’s your pony! And now we can tick the stewardship and donor relations boxes: complete. Or not! At one time, most of our Development efforts were focused on cultivating and securing gifts. While still at the heart of our overall strategy and key to meeting programme and personal KPIs, now more than ever before, we are stepping up to the responsibilities that come with accepting gifts, reporting on their impact, delivering what we said we would and continuing to meaningfully engage donors in the life of our organisation. Whether well-resourced or run on a shoestring, we’ll talk about what is most important, how to thoughtfully tailor stewardship to your supporters, and the impact of memorable, bespoke stewardship.

Emotion is the most potent and unacknowledged generator of profit there is. So why do leaders avoid talking about it? To many, both inside and outside universities, independence is under threat. Leading a large team: it’s not just about what you say Advancement leaders have a peculiar challenge. Positioned between the academic leadership of organisations and a professional team of experts, a major part of our roles is to translate institutional strategies and discussions at the highest level into something that our teams can actually deliver against. With the landscape of higher education changing, leaders need to have effective communication strategies that allow us to adapt and switch direction in a responsive way. This session, based on solid academic research and case studies from three UK universities, looks at techniques, methods and structures that directors can use to communicate with their middle managers in order to focus efforts where they are needed and get the best results. Managing brand and reputation in a digital world – how to leverage the benefits whilst avoiding the pitfalls and what can we learn from each other?

A successful campaign does more than raise money; it transforms an institution. It can raise its ambition and profile, provide focus and a shared mission, and most importantly build support and a culture of philanthropy for the future. Important to the success of the campaign is understanding the phases of the lifecycle of the campaign, from preparatory to launch and close to what’s next?

Each session will involve a university presentation, an interactive session to work on problems, then a culminating question and answer period to bring together the learnings, share concerns and stimulate ideas. The goal is for you to leave with new insights, questions to ask, and opportunities to explore when you return to your institution. While each session will stand on its own, the close of the two-part session will draw ideas, challenges and provocative questions from the participants and presenters to spark continued contemplation well beyond the session itself.

Based on a three part series of alumni engagement articles the session includes a synopsis of a three-year research study, and a capture of key trends and models in measuring alumni engagement. At the end you’ll leave with a series of practical tips and applications that will help maximise the impact your alumni have on your institution.

#Iheartmyinstitution: Embedding Alumni Relations into the student experience

Lifecycle of a campaign (part 1)

This two-part workshop series is designed to be an interactive learning experience for advancement professionals of all levels and disciplines. First, you will hear about the campaign experiences of two universities - Cambridge University and University of Birmingham - who will share their different perspectives from the beginning and end of the campaign lifecycle respectively.

During the session, the following questions will be answered: • Is there a secret formula to measuring alumni engagement? • What are the most effective ways to measure? • How can I demonstrate the value of alumni engagement? • Is giving tied to engagement? • Where should time and financial resources be allocated? • What does the future hold for measuring alumni engagement?

US foundations: global philanthropists

Not all alumni are created equal, so why do we treat them so? Most alumni programmes and alumni engagement metrics are flawed with a bias to yielding large numbers of participants, instead of attracting those that can make the biggest impact on our institutions. With a shift in thinking and design, we can dramatically elevate our programme results. Like any good recipe, alumni engagement relies on a few key ingredients to be successful. In this session you will learn how to effectively measure and demonstrate the value of alumni engagement in key areas.

Outstanding fundraising: just what is the role of boards? Our “Great Fundraising” report in 2015 indicated that it takes a special combination of leaders, teams, structure and culture for an organisations’ fundraising to flourish. One area left unexplored from that research is what role an organisations’ board and senior management team might play during that process and how they feel about playing these roles. In this session we’ll reveal the results of a study (sponsored by Marts and Lundy) designed to address these issues. We interviewed thirty fundraising directors, board chairs, board members and chief executives from the education sector, exploring how they work with fundraisers to create fundraising success. We’ll look at the nature of these relationships, how effective boards function in supporting fundraising, what energises or drains key players behind the success and how boards can support their fundraisers beyond mere budgetary approval and access to contacts. What exactly can Boards do to drive fundraising transformation? This session will provide these answers and more. Universities are active participants in these programmes and each year, billions of euros flow to academic institutions. Building the University of the Future: a case study

The University of Waterloo’s founding in 1957 was inspired by societal need – in particular, Canada’s need for 150,000 engineers. Out of this need, a distinctly different institution was born. Now, decades later, the distinctions that were once mocked by others in the academy are now the very things that have earned Waterloo its place as: Canada’s most innovative university, Canada’s most comprehensive research university, number one in Canada for career preparation, number one in Canada for venture capital backed enterprises and home of the world’s largest free student start-up incubator.

This session marks the global launch of the CASE online mentoring platform. It’s a tool to allow CASE’s experienced professionals to engage digitally with colleagues across the world who are really keen to learn. Come and hear from mentors and mentees about how both gain real benefit. The session will be run by CASE’s Vice President for Global Engagement and platform designer Daniel Watts from Aluminati and features hands-on training on becoming a mentor or a mentee.

This resulted in regulation changes that are already affecting our activities and we have a new regulator in place that is planning widerreaching changes. Further to this, the EU General Data Protection Regulation will be with us in 2018 and will tighten regulations in a number of key areas that will affect advancement. In this talk, l will highlight the recent changes, review the key issues and laws and the proposed changes to them and will present practical, real world examples to help you understand how to keep safe while staying productive.

How to grow an alumni relations strategy? Two case studies from Portugal and Russia Two different universities will present their personal experience about how to develop an alumni strategy. In Portugal, alumni relations is something that universities implemented only recently as strategic to governance. The Institute University of Lisbon (ISCTE) was one of the first higher education institutions in Portugal to create a professional alumni and advancement department in 2011. Their study reflects several initiatives and the failures, successes and alumni perspective of the institution. The Higher School of Economics in Russia offers huge scope of services for alumni, following the creation of a united system “HSE family” for all alumni, students and staff of the university. Dmitri Balkunets and Artem Kamaev discuss how the system works in contemporary Russia; how they manage to combine the relevant actors in the university and how to create new traditions in working with alumni.

Very large gifts are also growing in number in the U.K. and in Europe and the trend is clear. Transformational giving requires transformational ideas. All too often we tell alumni what we want to say to them. But how often do we ask ourselves what it is that they really want to hear? And do we ever really engage them in a discussion? This session will look at practical ways to design your communications programme to excite and energise your alumni community and to allow them to become active participants in the life of your institution. There is no one size fits all solution so bring your own ideas ready to share too.

Asking your alumni to volunteer their time is a great way to increase and improve engagement. However, planned and executed strategically, volunteering programmes can also make a real, long -term difference to your institution, its students and staff. What steps can we take to create win-win-win volunteering programmes? How do we build credibility and demonstrate value internally?

Entrepreneurial University Leaders Institutional leaders today face unprecedented challenges. There is ever-increasing competition between institutions across a range of measures including students, research grants and philanthropy. In the UK, the proposed introduction of the Teaching Excellence Framework is another example of public policy being used to publish quality measures. Legislators are also tightening up the way contact can be made with alumni and supporters. And finding talented staff is hard and expensive. So as leaders try to safeguard the values of their intuitions and promote their distinctiveness to students, funders and supporters what are their ingredients of success? The answer is increasingly having entrepreneurial skills.
