MYTH AND MATERIALITY By John Waddell Myth and Materiality is the latest book in the Oxbow Insights in Archaeology series. The aim of this book is to promote the thesis that myth may illuminate archaeology and that on occasion archaeology may shed light on myth. Medieval Irish literature is rich in mythic themes; some myths are of great antiquity, while some were invented by contemporary authors. Combining literary and archaeological evidence, John Waddell brings a lifetime’s experience of studying Irish history, Bronze Age archaeology and Celtic mythology in this personal and lively exploration of mythology and its archaeological expression.

NEOLITHIC STEPPING STONES Excavation and survey within the western seaways of Britain, 2008-2014 By Duncan Garrow and Fraser Sturt This book’s primary focus is Early Neolithic settlement on islands within the ‘western seaways’—sites that offer significant insight into the character of the Mesolithic–Neolithic transition in this particular maritime zone. It also explores a series of directly related, wider themes: the nature and effects of ‘island-ness’ in later prehistory; the visibility of material connections across the sea; the extent of Neolithic settlement variability across Britain; and the consequences of geographical biases in research for our understanding of the prehistoric past.

WESTWARD ON THE HIGH-HILLED PLAINS The Later Prehistory of the West Midlands Edited by Derek Hurst

£30.00 £24.00

In the course of reviewing the evidence for later prehistory from the Middle Bronze Age to Late Iron Age, the papers presented here adopt a variety of approaches, being either regional, county-wide, or thematic, and they also encompass the wider landscape as reconstructed from environmental evidence. This volume explores the archaeology of the English West Midlands region from the Lower Palaeolithic onwards. Based on a series of West Midlands Research Framework seminars, it aims to transform perceptions of the nature and significance of the archaeological evidence across a large part of central Britain.

PRESERVED IN THE PEAT An Extraordinary Bronze Age Burial on Whitehorse Hill, Dartmoor, and its Wider Context By Andy M. Jones This book is an account of the excavation of a burial mound on Whitehorse Hill, Dartmoor, which revealed an unexpected, intact burial deposit of Early Bronze Age date associated with an unparalleled range of artefacts. Analysis of environmental material from the site has revealed important insights into the pyre material used to burn the body, and about the environment in which the cist was constructed. The unparalleled assemblage of objects has yielded insights into a range of materials which have not survived from the earlier Bronze Age elsewhere in southern Britain.

THE LOST DARK AGE KINGOM OF RHEGED The Discovery of a Royal Stronghold at Trusty’s Hill, Galloway By Ronan Toolis and Christopher Bowles

£35.00 £28.00

The Galloway Picts Project aimed to recover evidence for the archaeological context for a unique Pictish inscribed stone at Trusty’s Hill, but far from validating the existence of Picts in this southerly region of Scotland, the archaeological context instead suggests the carvings relate to a royal stronghold and place of inauguration for the local Britons of Galloway around AD 600. This new archaeological evidence enhances our perception of power, politics, economy and culture at a time when the foundations for the kingdoms of Scotland, England and Wales were being laid.

YARNTON Neolithic and Bronze Age Settlement and Landscape By Gill Hey, Christopher Bell, Caroline Dennis and Mark Robinson

£29.95 £24.00

A rich prehistoric landscape was unexpectedly revealed on the Thames floodplain during investigations in advance of gravel extraction in the parishes of Yarnton and Cassington. This fascinating study examines this 2500-year settlement history and its changing landscape context on the gravel islands, silted up river channels and adjacent gravel terrace. The strength of the narrative derives from the longevity of occupation, but also the ability to combine and compare a suite of evidence related to house construction, burial practices, pit digging, craft activity, farming strategies, and interaction and exchange with nearby and distant communities.

THE EARLIER IRON AGE IN BRITAIN AND THE NEAR CONTINENT Edited by Colin Haselgrove and Rachel Pope

£56.00 £44.80

This book seeks to establish what we now know (and do not know) about Earlier Iron Age communities in Britain and their neighbours on the Continent. The authors engage with a variety of current research themes, seeking to characterise the Earlier Iron Age via the topics of landscape, environment, and agriculture; material culture and everyday life; architecture, settlement, and social organisation; and with the issue of transition - looking at how communities of the Late Bronze Age transform into those of the Earlier Iron Age, and how we understand the social changes of the later first millennium BC.

THE LATER IRON AGE IN BRITAIN AND BEYOND Edited by Colin Haselgrove and Tom Moore The papers collected here seek to re-conceptualise our visions of Later Iron Age societies in Britain by examining regions and topics that have received less attention in the past and by breaking down the artificial barriers often erected between artefact analysis and landscape studies. Themes considered include the expansion and enclosure of settlement, production and exchange, agricultural and social complexity, treatment of the dead, material culture and identity, at scales ranging from the household to the supra-regional.

TWICE-CROSSED RIVER Prehistoric and Palaeoenvironmental Investigations at Barleycroft Farm/Over, Cambridgeshire By Christopher Evans with Jonathan Tabor and Marc Vander Linden

£40.00 £32.00

This is the first volume charting the CAU’s on-going Barleycroft Farm/ Over investigations, which now encompasses almost 20 years of fieldwork across both banks of the River Great Ouse at its junction with the Fen. Amongst the project’s main directives is the status of a major river in prehistory—when a communication corridor and when a divide? Accordingly, a key component throughout has been the documentation of the lower Ouse’s complex palaeoenvironmental history, and a delta-like wet landscape dotted with mid-stream islands has been mapped.

EAA 118: A LATE IRON AGE WARRIOR BURIAL FROM KELVEDON, ESSEX By Paul R. Sealey

In 1982 Jim Bennett, an amateur archaeologist, excavated a late Iron Age warrior burial at Kelvedon in Essex. It was a discovery of national importance because there are so few warrior burials of the period. After the death of the excavator, the finds were dispersed but they were eventually assembled at Colchester Museums for exhibition, study and publication. This report examines all the evidence of the warrior, who might have been a Briton recruited to fight in the Gallic Wars or a Gaulish refugee from the conflict.

EAA 121: A LINE ACROSS LAND By Kasia Gdaniec, Mark Edmonds and Patricia E. J. Wiltshire Construction of a water supply pipeline in Cambridgeshire provided an opportunity to sample the prehistoric landscape along a transect that crossed several major geological boundaries. These were located at the neck of the sand and chalk peninsula of Isleham, extending down its gradually sloping western edge towards the braided palaeochannels of the River Snail. As a consequence of landscape sampling, six significant site areas were designated for archaeological investigation. Two of these sites saw more extensive fieldwork funded by English Heritage, and these form the main body of the report.

EAA 97: MONUMENT 97; ORTON LONGUEVILLE, CAMBRIDGESHIRE A Late Pre-Roman Iron Age and Early Roman Farmstead By D. F. Mackreth Identified from cropmarks and excavated in 1974, the site which forms the topic of this report consisted of three enclosures belonging to a small farmstead lasting from at least the later 1st century BC to the middle of the 2nd century AD. The evidence of the houses suggests that the site had been inhabited by a single family group at all times and had developed in tandem with the growing complexity of landscape division, and almost certainly was closed down in favour of another site nearby.

This is the first book for a generation on medieval agriculture in Wales, presenting evidence which is of considerable relevance to those studying the development of the early medieval landscapes of England and Ireland. This collection of essays confronts the paradox that, though agriculture lay at the heart of medieval society, understanding of what this meant for Wales remains limited. These issues are explored through new syntheses and case studies focused on Wales, and contextualising overviews of medieval agricultural systems in Ireland and England written by leading experts.
