The Soviet Baltic Offensive, 1944–45 German Defense of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania Ian Baxter
An account of the German defense of the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Against overwhelming Soviet forces the book shows how the German Army Group North was driven across the Baltics from Leningrad and fought a number isolated battles including the defense of Narva, Memel and the Kurland pocket, and outlines how Hitler forbade his troops to withdraw, ordering them to fight to the death. Exhausted and demoralized by continuous Soviet assaults, Army Group North became cut-off and isolated, fighting fanatically to hold the capital cities of Tallin, Vilnius and Riga. What followed were German forces fighting to the death in the last few small pockets of land surrounding three ports in Kurland, East Prussia and at the mouth of the River Vistula. Drawing on a host of rare and unpublished photographs accompanied by in-depth captions and text, the book provides an absorbing read of the Red Army’s conquering of the Baltics. 241067, $28.95 , $18.99 , Paperback, 128 pages
12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend
Volume 1 - From Formation to the Battle of Caen
Massimiliano Afiero
Raphael Riccio
The 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend was formed in 1943 from members of the Hitler Youth who had been born in 1926, primarily as an emergency response force in France to repel the expected Allied invasion from the sea. Training was initially haphazard due to lack of equipment, however in March 1944 it was attached to I SS Panzer Corps and transferred to Normandy. Based around Caen, it was intended to repel a possible and expected invasion from the sea. When the invasion came in June, it was one of the two closest panzer divisions to the landing beaches, engaging Allied paratroopers at dawn. Once the Allied bridgehead was established, Hitlerjugend deployed to Caen. The defensive battles that took place in Normandy, particularly the four battles around the city of Caen, saw the young soldiers of the Hitlerjugend demonstrate determined resistance, conceding only due to being greatly outnumbered. Packed with photographs, maps and profiles.

Darkest Christmas December 1942 and a World at War
Peter
Harmsen
December 1942 saw the bloodiest Christmas in history. Millions stationed in far-off lands feared this was their last Christmas in freedom, or their last Christmas alive. At the same time as the slaughter continued unabated, throughout the world there were random acts of kindness, born out of an instinctive feeling of the essential brotherhood of man. These gestures also straddled religious barriers and sometimes included those of non-Christian faiths. Even some Japanese, otherwise embarked on a self-declared crusade against the West, relented for a few precious hours in acknowledgment of the holiday. At Auschwitz, SS guards played cruel games with their prisoners. In Berlin, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels spent time with his family while still buried in feverish fantasies about the Jewish world conspiracy. The way the holiday was marked around the world tells a deeper and more universal story of the human condition in extraordinary times.

Bomb Group
The Eighth Air Force’s
Paul Bingley Mike Peters
381st
and The Allied Air Offensive Over Europe
In February 1942, a reconnaissance party of United States Army Air Force officers arrived in England. Firmly wedded to the doctrine of daylight precision bombing, they believed they could help turn the tide of the war in Europe. In the months that followed, they formed the Eighth Air Force – an organization that grew at an astonishing rate. To accommodate it, almost seventy airfields were hastily built across England. At the heart of the Eighth Air Force was its bombardment groups. These Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses and Consolidated B-24 Liberators were soon punching through the enemy’s defenses to bomb targets vital to its war effort. They were crewed by thousands of young American airmen, most of whom were volunteers. This book tells the story of just one “Bomb Group” – the 381st, which crossed the Atlantic in May 1943 –from its formation in the Texan desert, to its 297th and final bombing mission deep into the heart of Hitler’s Third Reich. 009605, $37.95 , $24.99 , Hardback, 336 pages

Gavin at War
The World War II Diary of Lieutenant General James M. Gavin Lewis Sorley
Lieutenant General James Gavin, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII, is one of the best-known figures of the war. Beginning as the commander of the 505th Parachute Combat Team that spearheaded the American assault on Sicily in July 1943, Gavin advanced to division command and finally command of US forces in Berlin. Throughout this time he kept a diary that starts in April 1943, as the unit was preparing to go to northern Africa, and continues through to his final entry on 1 September 1945 during the occupation of Berlin. It includes observations on fellow military and political leaders such as General Dwight Eisenhower and the British Field Marshal Montgomery, army operations, and the general’s personal life. He was an officer who led by example: on four combat jumps—into Sicily, at Salerno, then Normandy and the Netherlands—he was the first man out the door. The existence of the journal was kept a secret; the general’s family discovering it among his belongings after his death. 240244, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 240 pages

Nightstalkers
The Wright Project and the 868th Bomb Squadron in World War II
Richard Phillip Lawless
In August 1943, a highly classified US Army Air Force unit, code-named the “Wright Project,” departed Langley Field for Guadalcanal in the South Pacific to join the fight against the Empire of Japan. Operating independently, under sealed orders drafted at the highest levels of Army Air Force, the Wright Project was unique, both in terms of the war-fighting capabilities provided by classified systems and in the success these “crash-built” technologies allowed. The Wright airmen would fly only at night, usually as lone hunters of enemy ships. In so doing they would pave the way for the United States to enter and dominate a new dimension of war in the air for generations to come. In this account, the reader will meet radar warfare pioneers and squadron leaders who were never satisfied that they had pushed the men, the aircraft, and the technologies to the full limit of their possibilities. Comprehensive and highly personal, this story can now be revealed for the very first time, based on official sources, and interviews with the young men who flew into the night. 242057, $44.95 , $29.50 , Hardback, 336 pages
Operation Rype
A WWII OSS Railway Sabotage Mission in Norway
Frode Lindgjerdet
To prevent German occupying forces in Norway from reinforcing their defenses during the final months of World War II, the Office of Strategic Services launched Operation Rype, with the mission of sabotaging the Nordland Railway in Mid-Norway. Rype was led by Major William E. Colby, later director of the CIA. The Norwegian Special Operations Group (NORSO) dropped over the Snåsa mountains on the night of March 24. Out of eight B-24s, only three dropped on target. Two of the B-24s crashed, killing all but one of their crews. Reinforcement and resupply of the unit failed due to extreme Arctic conditions. Relying heavily on help from the Norwegian resistance, NORSO managed to sever the railway at two points. After the war ended, NORSO was allowed down from the mountains, but were sent on bogus missions by the British commanders in Trondheim. They eventually managed to get recognition for their contribution to victory. This new history of the operation is based on German, Norwegian, American and Swedish sources. 241340, $37.95 , $24.99 , Hardback, 288 pages
Bloody Verrières: The I. SS-Panzerkorps Defence of the VerrièresBourguebus Ridges
Volume 2 - The Defeat of Operation Spring and the Battles of Tilly-LaCampagne, 23 July – 5 August 1944
Arthur W Gullachsen
South of the Norman city of Caen, Verrières Ridge was seen a key stepping-stone for the British Second Army if it was to break out of the Normandy bridgehead in late July 1944. Imposing in height and containing perfect terrain for armored operations, the Germans viewed it as the lynchpin to their defenses south of the city of Caen and east of the Orne river. In the second volume of this two-volume work, the fighting of 23 July–3 August is chronicled in detail, specifically the premier Anglo-Canadian operation to capture Verrières Ridge. Designed as an attack to seize the ridge and exploit south with armor, this battle saw the 2nd Canadian Corps attack savaged again by German armored reserves brought in specifically to defeat another Goodwood. Not satisfied with this defensive victory, German armored forces would then seek to restore an earlier defensive line further north, attacking to destroy the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. Largely unknown, these were some of the strongest and most successful German armored operations to take place in the Normandy campaign. 240947, $37.95 , $24.99 , Hardback, 288 pages

SOG Kontum
Top Secret Missions in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, 1968–1969
Joe Parnar Robert Dumont
The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) was a highly classified, multi-service United States Special Forces unit which conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam War. The unit conducted strategic reconnaissance missions in South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia; carried out the capture of enemy prisoners, rescued downed pilots, and conducted rescue operations to retrieve allied prisoners of war throughout Southeast Asia; and conducted clandestine agent team activities and psychological operations.
This book tells the story of the Teams operating out of FOB2 Kontum, near the tri-border area, in 1968–69. From recon missions over the fence to the heroic, and sometimes fatal efforts undertaken to try and rescue missing SOG members, the events are told through the words of the men themselves, supported by previously unreleased official documents.

Corporal Cannon
A Female Marine in Afghanistan
Savannah Cannon
Not even old enough to drink, Corporal Savannah Cannon is a young enlisted United States Marine deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2010. As a tactical data networking specialist, she is sent away from everyone she knows and attached to a Regimental Combat Team where women are not allowed to repair communications. Her experiences over the next few months shed light on the unique and difficult positions women are placed in when supporting combat roles, while offering a raw look at the painful choices women must sometimes make. Cannon finds herself in a combat zone, ostracized from family, friends, and even her fellow Marines as the men are told to avoid her. The connections she makes are born from trauma and desperation and the choices she makes will echo throughout many lives. Corporal Cannon is not the story of a heroine; it is the hard-hitting account of just one of the flawed individuals who make up the United States’ fighting forces. The author weaves a story of past and present, and the healing that can come with admitting our mistakes and moving past them. 241661, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 264 pages

The Battle of Kham Duc
James
McLeroy
Gregory Sanders
The strategic potential of the three-day attack of two NVA regiments on Kham Duc, a remote and isolated Army Special Forces camp, on the eve of the first Paris peace talks in May 1968, was so significant that former President Lyndon Johnson included it in his memoirs. This gripping, original, eyewitness narrative and thoroughly researched analysis of a widely misinterpreted battle at the height of the Vietnam War radically contradicts all the other published accounts of it. In addition to the tactical details of the combat narrative, the authors consider the grand strategies and political contexts of the U.S. and North Vietnamese leaders. 242170, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 272 pages
Hunters’ Island Beyond Honor
Gordon L Rottman
In August 1942 many were focused on a rugged and brutal South Pacific island called Guadalcanal. Here, two determined nations pitted all they could spare committing every airplane, ship and soldier they could funnel into the cauldron. Private Henrik Hahnemann, shaken and bitter about the dastardly Japanese sneak attack, fixated on revenge and righting a great wrong, chose the Marine Corps as the means for his personal retribution. Superior Private Obatia Yoshiro, an average twenty year old student expected to eventually take over his father’s glass works along. In the summer months he crews his uncle’s fishing boat, exposing him to the physical and mental demands of the elements. His school plans suddenly undermined by a draft notice, he makes the best of a dismal and brutal life of absolute obligation and unquestioning obedience. Values and beliefs, discipline and obedience, massed firepower or skill at arms, which would prevail in this nightmare? Or was it a matter of the small Stars and Stripes flag carried by one or the belt of a thousand stitches— sen’ninbari—carried by the other? Would either protect or inspire? Would they see home again, or did it matter?

Alexander the Great and Persia From Conqueror to King of Asia
Joseph Stiles
At times Alexander would behave pragmatically, sparing his defeated enemies and adopting Persian customs. Sisygambis, the mother of Persian King Darius III, allegedly came to view Alexander as a son and starved herself at the news of his demise. On other occasions he did not shy away from destruction (famously torching the palace at Persepolis) and cruelty, earning himself the nickname ‘the accursed’. This conflicting nature gives Alexander a complex legacy in the Persian world. Joseph Stiles explores Alexander the Great’s fascinating relationship with his ‘spear-won’ empire, disentangling the motives and influences behind his policies and actions as ‘King of Asia’.

Antiochus The Great Michael Taylor
A teenage king in 223 BC, Antiochus III inherited an empire in shambles, ravaged by civil strife and eroded by territorial secessions. He proved himself a true heir of Alexander: he defeated rebel armies and embarked on a campaign of conquest and reunification. Although sometimes presented as a failure against the unstoppable might of Rome, Antiochus III must rank as one of the most energetic and effective rulers of the Ancient world. In addition to discussing the career of Antiochus III, Michael Taylor examines Seleucid military organization and royal administration.

The Wars of the Maccabees
John D. Grainger
By the early second century BC, Israel had long been under the rule of the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire. But the policy of deliberate Hellenization and suppression of Jewish religious practices by Antiochus IV, sparked a revolt in 167 BC which was led initially by Judah Maccabee and later by his brothers and their descendants. John D. Grainger explains the causes of the revolt and traces the course of the various campaigns of the Maccabees, first against the Seleucids and then the Romans who captured Jerusalem in 63 BC and partitioned the kingdom. The last chapters consider the continued Jewish resistance to Roman rule and factional fighting, until the crowning of Herod, marked the end of the Hasmonean dynasty.

The Ptolemies, Rise of a Dynasty Ptolemaic Egypt 330–246 BC
John D Grainger
In the 1st volume of his trilogy on the Ptolemies, Grainger explains how Ptolemy I established the dynasty’s power in Egypt in the wake of Alexander the Great’s death. Egypt had been independent for most of the fourth century BC, but was reconquered by the Persian Empire in the 340s. Alexander was welcomed as a liberator and, after the tyranny of Kleomenes, so was Ptolemy. This was the essential basis of Ptolemy’s power. He conciliated the Egyptians, but reinforced his military strength with Greek settlers. He built the city of Alexandria, but to his own requirements, not those planned by Alexander. The succession was carefully managed, but was not directly hereditary (Ptolemy II was not the eldest son), and the new king was very different.

The Tactics of Aelian
Christopher Matthew Aelian’s work on tactics is a hugely significant piece of ancient military literature, yet the last new edition in English was published in 1814. His Tactica thus examines all facets of warfare in the period of Alexander the Great’s successors, including the arms and armor of cavalry and infantry, formations, commands and signals. Aelian also provides a discussion of the Roman army of the period. Christopher Matthew’s new edition is based on the 1616 edition but written in modern English with new renditions of all its accompanying figures. 849006, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 224 pages
Twilight of the Hellenistic World
Bob Bennett Mike Roberts
This book recounts and analyzes the complex series of conflicts between the Hellenistic Successor states in the generation before the Romans intervened in, and ultimately conquered, the region. This period is rarely treated in any depth, usually warranting little more than a summary as context for a discussion of the Roman conquests.

A Chronology of Ancient Greece
Timothy Venning
This book offers a coherent narrative of the politico-military history of ancient Greece. It commences with the necessarily approximate course of events in Bronze and early Iron Age, as estimated by the most reliable scholarship plus the legendary accounts of this period. From the Persian Wars onwards, a year-by-year chronology is constructed from the ancient historical sources. Where possible a day-by-day narrative is given. The text is divided into events per geographical area for each date. Detailed accounts are provided for battles and political crises where the sources allow this, and where not much is known for certain the different opinions of historians are referenced en route.

The Rise of the Hellenistic Kingdoms 336–250 BC
Philip Matyszak
When Alexander the Great died in 323 BC, he left an empire that stretched from the shores of the Adriatic to the mountains of Afghanistan. This empire did not survive Alexander’s death, and rapidly broke into several successor states. These states, substantial kingdoms in their own right, dominated Asia Minor, Greece, the Levant and Egypt for the next three hundred years.
While Philip Matyszak’s narrative covers their remarkable contribution of the Eastern Greeks in fields such as philosophy, science and culture, the main focus is on the rivalry, politics and wars, both civil and foreign, which the Hellenistic rulers constantly fought among themselves.

Wars and Battles of Ancient Greece
Paul Chrystal Wars & Battles of Ancient Greece is not just another arid account of wars and battles, with endless, often exaggerated, casualty figures and repetitive tactics. It is different from most other books in the field because it has context as its focus: each of the battles covered is, where sources permit, placed in its historical, political and social context. No war or battle has ever been fought in isolation—there is always a prelude, a casus belli and a series of consequences. These are revealed wherever possible for each of the wars and battles in this book.

The Seleukid Empire of Antiochus III, 223–187
BC
John D. Grainger
Too often remembered only as the man who lost to the Romans at Magnesia, Antiochus is here revealed as one of the most powerful and capable rulers of the age. Having emerged from civil war in 223 as the sole survivor of the Seleukid dynasty, he shouldered the burdens of a weakened and divided realm. Though defeated by Egypt in the Fourth Syrian War, he gradually restored full control over the empire. His great Eastern campaign took Macedonian arms back to India for the first time since Alexander’s day and, returning west, he went on to conquer Thrace and finally wrest Syria from Ptolemaic control.

Great Naval Battles of the Ancient Greek World
Owen
Rees

Owen Rees looks to redress the balance, giving naval battles their due attention. This book presents a selection of thirteen naval battles that span a defining century in ancient Greek history, from the Ionian Revolt and Persian Invasion to the rise of external naval powers in the Mediterranean Sea, such as the Carthaginians. Each battle is set in context. The background, wider military campaigns, and the opposing forces are discussed, followed by a narrative and analysis of the fighting. 827301, $32.95 , $21.50 , Hardback, 248 pages
Kings and Kingship in the Hellenistic World 350 - 30 BC
John D. Grainger
Between c.350 BC and 30 BC the Mediterranean world was one in which kings ruled. Rather than attempting a narrative of the various kingdoms, John Grainger takes a thematic approach, considering various aspects of Hellenistic kingship in turn. This allows him to highlight the common features as well as the differences across the various dynasties. How did one become king? How was a smooth succession secured and what happened when it was not? What were the duties of a king, and what were the rewards and distractions? These are just a few of the interesting facets examined in this original and fascinating book.

The Reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius, AD 138–161
John S McHugh
The reign of Antoninus Pius is widely seen as the apogee of the Roman Empire yet, due to gaps in the historical sources, his reign has been overlooked by modern historians. He is considered one of the five good emperors of the Antonine dynasty under whom the pax Romana enabled the empire to prosper, trade to flourish and culture to thrive. His reign is considered a Golden Age but this was partly an image created by imperial propaganda. There were serious conflicts in North Africa and Dacia, as well as a major revolt in Britain. On his death the empire stood on the cusp of the catastrophic invasions and rebellions that marked the reign of his successor Marcus Aurelius.

Early Roman Warfare From the Regal Period to the First Punic War Jeremy Armstrong
Dr Jeremy Armstrong traces the development of Rome’s military might from its earliest discernible origins down to the First Punic War. He shows how her armies evolved from ad-hoc forces of warriors organized along clan lines and assembled for the city’s survival, to the sophisticated organization of the legions that went on to dominate all of Italy and then (after the period covered) the entire Mediterranean world. The author provides a fresh analysis of Roman military organization, equipment, tactics and strategy showing how Rome’s military apparatus adapted to meet the changing strategic needs of new enemies and broader ambitions. This study will be welcomed by anyone with an interest in Classical, and especially Roman, military history.

Rivalries that Destroyed the Roman Republic
Jeremiah McCall
This is the story of how some Roman aristocrats grew so competitive in their political rivalries that they destroyed their Republic, in the late second to mid-first century BCE. Politics had always been a fractious game at Rome as aristocratic competitors strove to outshine one another. And for centuries it had worked. But as Rome came to rule much of the Mediterranean, aristocratic competitions grew too fierce. And so, a series of bitter rivalries combined with the social and political pressures of the day to disintegrate the Republic. This story includes the senatorial debates of Fabius and Scipio, the censorial purges of Cato; the murders of Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus, the ultimate rivalry of Caesar and Pompey, and more.

Military History of Late Rome 565–602
Ilkka Syvänne
Military History of Late Rome 565-602 provides a new fresh analysis of the Roman Empire in the aftermath of the reconquests of Justinian I (527-65). It is often claimed that Justinian overstretched the Roman resources, but this analysis proves that view wrong. It demonstrates that the initial troubles were largely the result of the mistakes of Justin II (565-78) and that his successors, Tiberius II (578-82) and Maurice (582-602), not only restored its fortunes but were, at the time of the death of Maurice, actually poised to complete the reconquests of Justinian. 848528, $52.95 , $34.50 , Hardback, 432 pages
Military History of Late Rome 395-425

Military History of Late Rome 457–518
Ilkka Syvänne
The Military History of Late Rome Volume 457-518 provides a fresh, new look into the events that led to the collapse of West Rome, while East Rome not only survived but went on to prosper despite a series of major defeats that included, most notably, the catastrophic campaign against the Vandals in 468. The author explains what mistakes the West Romans made and what the East Romans did right to survive. He analyses the role of the barbarian generals and military forces in this and also offers an analysis of the tactical developments during this pivotal period as a result of which the cavalry, so famous from the accounts of Procopius, became the dominant arm in the East.

Mysteries of the Norman Conquest
Unravelling the Truth of the Battle of Hastings and the Events of 1066
Robert Allred
Recent challenges to the traditional site of the Battle of Hastings has increased speculation that the struggle for the English crown in 1066 did not take place on the slopes of what is today Battle Abbey. The time had clearly come to evaluate all these suggestions, and Robert Allred decided to take on that task. Taking nothing for granted, Robert hiked round the sites of the three battles of 1066 – Fulford, Stamford Bridge and Hastings. Armed with the medieval sources and current literature, he set out to appraise the evidence and to draw his own conclusions. The reader is taken on a journey from Yorkshire to the South Coast and down through the ages to reexamine what has been written about that momentous year.

Vikings at War
Kim Hjardar Vegard Vike
Vikings at War presents a sumptuous depiction of how the Vikings waged war; their weapons technology, military traditions and tactics, their fortifications, ships and command structure. It also portrays the Viking raids and conquest campaigns that brought the Vikings to virtually every corner of Europe and even to America. Wherever Viking ships roamed, enormous suffering followed in their wake, but the encounter between cultures changed both European and Nordic societies. Employing unorthodox and unpredictable strategies, which were hard for more organized forces to respond to, the most crucial element of the Viking’s success was their basic strategy of evading the enemy by arriving by sea.

The Viking Saint Olaf II of Norway John Carr
Norway’s King Olaf II Haraldsson (c. 995-1030) embodied both his Viking identity and sainthood to an extraordinary degree. Olaf lacked none of the traditional Viking qualities of toughness and audacity, yet his routine baptism grew into a burning missionary faith that was all the more remarkable for being combined with his typically Viking determination and energy – and sometimes ruthlessness as well. His overriding mission was to Christianize Norway and extirpate heathenism. His unstinting efforts, often at great peril to his life, earned him the Norwegian throne in 1015, when he had barely reached his twenties. After his death, his body was found to possess healing powers, Olaf II was canonized a saint 134 years later.

Hotspur
Sir Henry Percy and the Myth of Chivalry
John
Sadler
On 21 July 1403 Sir Henry Percy – better known as Hotspur – led a rebel army out at Shrewsbury to face the forces of the king Henry IV. The battle was both bloody and decisive. Hotspur was shot down by an arrow and killed. Posthumously he was declared a traitor and his lands forfeited to the crown. This was an ignominious end to the brilliant career of a most famous medieval noblemen, soldier, diplomat, and courtier who played a leading role in the reigns of Richard II and Henry IV. How did he earn his extraordinary reputation, and why did Shakespeare portray him as a fearsomely brave but flawed hero who, despite a traitor’s death, remained the mirror of chivalry? The first full biography of this legendary figure to be published for over twenty years.

The Last Years of the Teutonic Knights Lithuania, Poland and the Teutonic Order
William Urban
The Battle of Grunwald was one of the largest battles in Medieval Europe, and was the most important in the histories of Poland and Lithuania. It was fought on 15 July 1410 during the Polish-Lithuania-Teutonic War between the alliance of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania against the German-Prussian Teutonic Knights and with the assistance of Sigismund, then King of Hungary and Croatia. The Teutonic Knights, a crusading military order, were defeated and most of their leaders were killed or taken prisoner. This defeat would mark the beginning of their decline and they would never again regain their former power.

The Highland Battles Warfare on Scotland’s Northern Frontier in the Early Middle Ages
Chris Peers
The wars fought in Scotland’s northern and western highlands between the ninth and fourteenth centuries were a key stage in the military history of the region, yet they have rarely been studied in depth before. Out of this confused and turbulent period came the more settled and familiar history of the region. The Highlands and islands were controlled by the kings of Norway or by Norse or Norse-Celtic warlords, who not only resisted Scottish royal authority but on occasion seemed likely to overthrow it. That is why Chris Peers’s ambitious study is of such value for he provides a coherent and vivid account of the series of campaigns and battles that shaped Scotland.

The Art of Renaissance Warfare
From The Fall of Constantinople to the Thirty Years War
Stephen Turnbull
The Art of Renaissance Warfare tells the story of the knight during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries – from the great victories of Edward III and the Black Prince to the fall of Richard III on Bosworth Field.
Men such as Bertrand du Guesclin and Sir John Chandos loom large in the pages of this book – bold leaders and brave warriors, imbued with these traditions of chivalry and knighthood. How their heroic endeavors and the knightly code of conduct could be reconciled with the indiscriminate carnage of the ‘chevauchée’ and the depredations of the ‘free companies’ is one of the principal themes of this informative and entertaining book. 713759, $26.95 , $17.99 , Paperback, 272 pages

Sieges of the Middle Ages
Philip Warner
In the Middle Ages the castle was an important military and administrative center, essentially utilitarian in its design and in the purposes it served. The Lost Samurai Japanese Mercenaries in South East Asia, 1593–1688
Stephen Turnbull
The Lost Samurai reveals the greatest untold story of Japan’s legendary warrior class, which is that for almost a hundred years Japanese samurai were employed as mercenaries in the service of the kings of Siam, Cambodia, Burma, Spain and Portugal, as well as by the directors of the Dutch East India Company. The Japanese samurai were used in dramatic assault parties, as royal bodyguards, as staunch garrisons and as willing executioners. As a result, a stereotypical image of the fierce Japanese warrior developed that had a profound influence on the way they were regarded by their employers.

The conclusions may surprise some readers. Michael Fulton’s book is a fascinating all-round reassessment of an aspect of the crusades that had a decisive impact on the outcome of the struggle.

These are the questions that Peter Hoskins explores in this perceptive study of the careers of Edward, the Black Prince who led the English army to victory at the Battle of Poitiers and the opponent he defeated, the French King Jean II. Their contrasting characters and backgrounds are considered as is the military tradition of their time, but the primary focus of the book is a close comparison of their strengths and weaknesses as soldiers as they were revealed on campaign and on the battlefield.

The Gunpowder Plot Deceit
Martyn R Beardsley
Most people think they know the story of the Gunpowder Plot, and of how a bloody catastrophe was averted at the eleventh hour when Guy Fawkes was caught lurking in the shadows beneath the Houses of Parliament. But what if it wasn’t like that at all?
This book explores the idea that the government was not only aware of what the plotters were up to long before Fawkes’ arrest, but that agent-provocateurs may have given them a helping hand – or have even instigated the plot themselves.

Destructive and Formidable British Infantry Firepower, 1642–1765
David Blackmore
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the British Army’s victories over the French at battles such as Blenheim in 1704, Minden and Quebec in 1759, and over the Jacobites at Culloden in 1746, were largely credited to its infantry’s particularly effective and deadly firepower. For the first time, David Blackmore has gone back to original drill manuals and other contemporary sources to discover the reasons behind this. He has discovered a specifically British set of tactics, which created this effectiveness and allowed it to be maintained over such a long period, correcting many o misconceptions about British infantry firepower in the age of the musket and linear warfare.

Elizabeth’s Sea Dogs and Their War Against Spain
Brian Best
The Sea Dogs were seafaring merchants who originally traded mainly with Holland and France. During Queen Elizabeth’s reign, however, they began to spread their reach, sailing further and further afield exploring and plundering. The main source of wealth quickly became the Caribbean, which, until then, had been predominantly the domain of wealthy Catholic Spain.
The main thorn in the Spanish side was Francis Drake. Despite efforts to kill or capture him, he continued to plunder the high seas, bringing back Spanish riches to England. It was thanks in main to the privateering exploits of the Sea Dogs that England became so wealthy, paving the way for the Renaissance that followed.

This book follows the efforts of the Transylvanian rulers to organize and to defend their new state, during its first seven decades of existence (1541-1613). The army at their disposal inherited an essentially medieval structure that reflected the social composition of the region. The bulk of the army consisted of the so called `county flags` (noble levies and conscripted peasants from their estates), the Székely levies (troops recruited in the districts of South-East Transylvania), and the troops supplied by the Saxon districts from the highly urbanized southern parts of Transylvania.

Campaigns of the Eastern Association
The Rise of Oliver Cromwell, 1642-1645
Laurence Spring
The Eastern Association is best known for its performance at the battle of Marston Moor and the rise of Oliver Cromwell, but it was so much more. It was one of the most successful Parliamentary armies that served during the First Civil War. Using contemporary and archaeological evidence this book looks at these two battles, as well as Gainsborough and Winceby, and the sieges of Reading, King’s Lynn, Lincoln and York. It also looks at the religious and political divisions within the army caused by the Presbyterians and Cromwell’s Independent factions which would almost cripple the army in winter of 1644, which would end in a bitter dispute in Parliament, which would eventually lead to the formation of the New Model Army. 113986, $49.95 , $32.50 , Paperback, 240 pages

The Shogun’s Soldiers
The Daily Life of Samurai and Soldiers in Edo Period Japan, 1603-1721. Volume 1 Michael Fredholm von Essen Tokugawa Ieyasu’s decisive victory at Sekigahara in 1600 concluded the civil wars, confirmed his position of military supremacy as shogun (generalissimo) of Japan, and inaugurated the Edo period (1600-1868), so named because Ieyasu after the battle established his capital in Edo (modernday Tokyo). The New Knights
The Development of Cavalry in Western Europe, 1562-1700
Frederic Chauvire
From the middle of the 16th century to the early years of the 18th century, cavalry experienced significant changes in doctrine, deployment, and the equipment it used.
The Men-at-Arms, carrying lances and arranged in large formations, were replaced by more lightly-armed cavalrymen fighting with swords and pistols in new and more flexible tactical formations. These transformations have often been interpreted as a symbol of decline in the cavalry, incapable of adapting to the new transformations in the art of war. This book aims to deconstruct this simplifying vision by focusing on an analysis of what constitutes the principal combat action of heavy cavalry: the charge. 336486, $44.95 , $29.50 , Paperback, 242 pages

Part of Greene’s challenge involved managing South Carolina’s determined but unreliable Patriot militia, led by Thomas Sumter, the famed “Gamecock.” Though Sumter would go on to a long political career, it was as a defiant partisan that he first earned the respect of his fellow backcountry settlers.

The Men of Wellington’s Light Division Unpublished Memoirs from the 43rd Light Infantry in the Peninsular War
Gareth Glover Robert Burnham
Many wonderful accounts of Britain’s war against Napoleon were never published. Many were produced within days, or hours, after the incidents. Never intended to be published, the memoirs in this book were written only for the men themselves and their families, being penned without the influence of ‘hindsight’ to alter and temper their views. They provide brutally honest assessments of their senior officers, how operations were handled and who made mistakes that have subsequently been quietly covered over.

Bruno Mugnai
For the Ottoman Empire, the period between the 1780s and 1820s was very important. Survival meant engaging in a series of multilateral negotiations, not only with foreign powers, but also with a host of new military, intellectual, and religious elite groups. The struggle for survival was central to the changing dynamics of Ottoman society, especially in a period when war was generally proving too costly. This book examines the development of the Ottoman army from its campaigns against the Bedouin in Iraq in the 1780s until the Serbian uprisings in 1804-15, including a detailed description of their dress and equipment. 070487, $59.95 , $38.99 , Paperback, 406 pages

This detailed study looks at artillery in use throughout the Napoleonic period, examining his own artillery as well as that of his enemies, and evaluates the gunners’ contribution to warfare. By looking at particular battles in detail, it shows just how the effective employment of artillery could tip the scales. It reveals much of the technical aspects of gunnery during the period how guns were placed, their range, what calibers were preferred, how artillery operate. It examines French artillery and compares it to that of Britain, Russia, and Austria; and looks at many of the personalities involved and the difference between good gunnery and mediocre artillery. Illustrated with beautiful line drawings and rare contemporary plates.

We Are Striking for Pennsylvania”
The Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac March to Gettysburg - Volume 1: June 3–21, 1863
Scott L. Mingus Sr. Eric J. Wittenberg
This study is one of the first to integrate the military, media, political, social, economic, and civilian perspectives with rank-and-file accounts from the soldiers of both armies as theymarch toward their destiny at Gettysburg. Mingus and Wittenberg mined hundreds of primary accounts, newspapers, and other sources to produce this powerful and gripping account. As readers will quickly learn, much of it is glossed over in other studies of the campaign, which cannot be fully understood without a firm appreciation of what the armies (and civilians) did on their way to the small crossroads town in Pennsylvania.

Six Miles from Charleston, Five Minutes to Hell
Robert
M. Dunkerly Doug Crenshaw

This is the story of the Confederate capital before, during, and after the Civil War. This guidebook includes a comprehensive list of places to visit: the battlefields around the city, museums, historic sites, monuments, cemeteries, historical preservation groups, and more.

The Battle of Seccessionville, June 16, 1862
James A. Morgan III
The village of Secessionville, just outside of Charleston, South Carolina, was the site of an early war skirmish, the consequences of which might have been enormous had the outcome been different.
In Six Miles from Charleston, Five Minutes to Hell, Jim Morgan examines the James Island campaign and its aftermath. By including several original sources not previously explored, he takes a fresh look at this small, but potentially game-changing fight, and shows that it was of much more than merely local interest at the time.

A Study in Command
William Royston Geise Michael J. Forsyth
This book traces the evolution of Confederate command and how it affected the shifting strategic situation and general course of the war. Dr. Geise accomplishes his task by coming at the question in a unique fashion. Military field operations are discussed as needed, but his emphasis is on the functioning of headquarters and staff. This was especially so for the Trans-Mississippi. The author’s work mining primary archival sources and published firsthand accounts, coupled with a smooth and clear writing style resurrects Dr. Geise’s smoothly written and deeply researched manuscript from its undeserved obscurity. This edition, with its original annotations and Forsyth’s updated citations and observations, is bolstered with original maps, photographs, and images.

Civil War Monuments and Memory

Jon Tracey Chris Mackowski PhD
War
In the century and a half since the Civil War, Americans have remembered it in different ways. Veterans placed monuments to commemorate their deeds on the battlefield. In doing so, they often set in stone and bronze specific images in specific places that may conflict with the factual historical record. Monuments can embody the very real tension between history and the way we remember that history—what we now call “memory.” This collection of essays brings together the best scholarship from Emerging Civil War’s blog, symposia, and podcast—all of it revised and updated—coupled with original pieces, designed to shed new light on the monuments and memorials that give us some of our most powerful connections to the war.

All Hell Can’t Stop Them
The Battles for Chattanooga— Missionary Ridge and Ringgold, November 24-27, 1863
David A. Powell
To many of the Federal soldiers watching the Stars and Stripes unfurl on the morning of November 25, 1863, it seemed that the battle to relieve Chattanooga was complete. But Grant’s greatest fear was that the Rebels would slip away before he could deliver the final blow. That blow landed on the afternoon of November 25. Each of Grant’s assembled forces—troops led by Union Generals William T. Sherman, George H. Thomas, and Joseph Hooker—all moved to the attack. Stubbornly, Bragg refused to retreat, and instead accepted battle. That decision would cost him dearly.

Directing the Tunnellers’ War
The Tunnelling Memoirs of Captain H Dixon MC RE Nigel Cave Phillip Robinson
The original version of this memoir was entitled The Lighter Side of a Tunneler’s Life, produced in 1933, was intended for publication, but remained no more than a draft, rescued some time ago by one of the editors from the Royal Engineers’ archives at Chatham. The editors have added extensive notes explaining and, on occasions correcting, Dixon’s accounts; these are illustrated with explanatory plans and diagrams along with photographs of many of the personalities he describes. The combination provides a very personal perspective of the conduct of the war at GHQ.

Remember Him at the Altar Bloxham School and the Great War
Matthew
Dixon
Simon Batten
Taking one small boarding school in rural Oxfordshire, this book tells the story of the 80 Bloxhamists who died in the Great War, tracing their lives from school to the grave, but it also examines the experiences of those who served and survived and looks at the way in which the lives of those at home were affected by the war. The authors take the story up to the present day to study the way in which the remembrance of those who fell has changed over the years, and what these changes tell us about how we view the war. This research project, often a long and difficult process, is itself part of the story of how the 80 men continue to be commemorated at their old school.

No Bad Soldiers 119 Infantry Brigade and Brigadier-General Frank Percy Crozier in the Great War Michael Anthony Taylor
In November 1916, the newly promoted Brigadier-General Frank Percy Crozier took command of 119 Brigade, one of three infantry brigades that made up the 40th Division. This book details the history and achievements of the brigade and adds to the story of the controversial Frank Crozier. Raised in 1915 and originally intended as a formation of the Welsh Army Corps, 119 Brigade had crossed to France in June 1916 as a part of the last of the New Army divisions to join the BEF. According to Crozier, he was told on arrival at divisional headquarters that the brigade was “quite the worst”. Believing that there were no such things as bad soldiers, only bad colonels, Crozier claimed to have transformed the brigade in six months.

The South Wales Borderers at Gallipoli 1915
Rodney Ashwood
While the main emphasis of the Great War was on the Western Front of France and Belgium, the British Army also took part in what was a lesser known conflict, but one of equal intensity and drama. This was at Gallipoli, on the shores of Turkey, between April 1915 and January 1916. Meticulously researched and written, this is a personal account of the South Wales Borderers during the Gallipoli campaign which adds an important social dimension to the traditional style of books already written on one of the most dramatic campaigns in British military history. Some of the best, toughest and most generous soldiers in the British army come from Wales. This book serves as a tribute to those magnificent soldiers.

Gallipoli The Egerton Diaries and Papers
David Raw
As Commander of 52nd Division, Granville Egerton kept a detailed long daily diary of the events, conditions and personalities at Gallipoli between June and September, 1915. He is highly critical of the decisions and tactics of the campaign as well as of his C-in-C Sir Ian Hamilton and Corps Commander Aylmer Hunter-Weston. ‘Ian Hamilton can’t help himself from being a liar.’ It gives a vivid picture of life on the Peninsula. He also kept a short diary which details the deteriorating state of his own health, exacerbated by local conditions. The short diaries are in the National Library of Scotland. The author reproduces the diaries and papers in full with detailed notes and analysis in chronological order.

Tunisian Tales
The 1st Parachute Brigade in North Africa 1942-43 Niall Cherry
Whilst many books have been written on the history of the Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces in the Second World War, none of them have concentrated solely on the story of the 1st Parachute Brigade in North Africa between 1942 and 1943. ‘Tunisian Tales’ covers the raising of the Brigade in 1941 and training in the UK before their transfer to the Mediterranean theater of operations. It also covers the three airborne operations carried out by the Brigade there - Bone, Souk-el-Arba and Depienne/Oudna - in great detail. ‘Tunisian Tales’ represents a notable contribution to new research into the history of Britain’s airborne forces.

Former Anglican Army Chaplains in Inter-War
Britain
Linda
Parker
The Anglican chaplains who served in WWI were changed by the experience, and returned determined to revitalize the Anglican Church in Britain and to create a society which would be a living memorial to the men who had died. They had an influence on Prayer Book revision, developments in theological thinking, moves towards church unity, as well as the resolving of industrial tension. They were also influential in shaping attitudes to rituals of remembrance in the 1920s and attitudes to pacifism in the 1930s. This book argues that in the inter-war years the impact of former chaplains was enhanced by their experiences in an unprecedented global conflict, which gave their actions and opinions more moral authority.

Stemming the Tide Officers & Leadership in the British Expeditionary Force 1914
Spencer Jones
The BEF proved its fighting qualities in the fierce battles of 1914 and its reputation has endured. However, the same cannot be said for many of its commanders reputation, yet the officers who led the BEF to war were every bit as professional and hard-bitten as the soldiers they commanded. These officers had learned their craft in the unforgiving school of colonial warfare and honed their understanding of conflict in the period of reform that reshaped the army between 1902 and 1914. As this book reveals an officer class that, despite certain weaknesses, provided highly effective leadership during the chaotic fighting of August to November 1914. 294727, $59.95 , $38.99 , Paperback, 384 pages
The Horns of the Beast The Swakop River Campaign and World War I in South-West Africa 1914-15
James Stejskal
In December 1914, veteran Boer commander General Louis Botha landed his forces on the coast of German South West Africa to finish off the colony’s Schutztruppe defenders. Botha’s campaign would eventually lead to victory, but it would not be easy. Overshadowed by the battles in Europe, this was one of the more distant and now almost forgotten episodes of World War I. Using primary sources, on the ground research, and accurate maps and charts of the battles, the author sheds new light on the operations of the South African Army in its first foreign war and the Schutztruppe defense of German South West Africa. The book also demonstrates the terrible cost of miscalculations by politicians and military leaders on both sides. 982789, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 140 pages

Muddling Through The Organisation of British Army Chaplaincy in World War One
Peter Howson
As with many other aspects of the British army the outbreak of World War One started a process of change that was to result in a radically different provision of chaplaincy care once the war was over. Nothing was ever simple with chaplaincy as a number of churches becoming involved with the army, many for the first time. The structure was already under pressure before the war with the Catholic Church insisting on new rules for chaplaincy in the first decade of the twentieth century. Anglicans, Catholics, Presbyterians, Methodists, and other faith groups, as well as military historians will find this book of interest as it overturns a number of myths and puts chaplaincy in its wider context. 982277, $69.95 , $45.50 , Hardback, 240 pages
Top Secret
British Boffins in World War One
David Rogers
Fellows of the Royal Society were key to both the Royal Society and Government initiatives. But who were the Fellows and why should they be of such strategic importance? Remarkably, the exploits of the Fellows during the war are relatively unknown. Drawing from previously unpublished documents from the Royal Society archives deemed ‘Secret’ at the time, and wartime documents from the National Archives classified during the Great War as ‘Subject to the Official Secrets Act’, Top Secret: British Boffins in WW1 brings a unique perspective on wartime inventions, research and developments from one of the darkest periods of 20th Century warfare. 384217, $59.95 , $38.99 , Paperback, 224 pages

As WWI casualties occured, surgical experience from previous conflicts was of little value, and it became quickly apparent that early surgical intervention with radical removal of all dead and devitalized tissue was vital to help reduce the chances of infections. This text discusses the evacuation pathway, and explains how facilities evolved to cope. There are chapters dealing with the advances made in anesthesia, resuscitation and blood transfusion, the pathology and microbiology of wounding, and diagnostic radiology.
There are also chapters dealing with the development of orthopedic surgery, the treatment of abdominal wounds, chest wounds, wounds of the skull and brain, and the development of plastic and reconstructive surgery. 384408, $49.95 , $32.50 , Paperback, 288 pages

September 1914-June 1916
Ralph J. Whitehead
Until recently, most books written on the Battle of the Somme concentrated almost exclusively on the British effort with only a brief mention of the period before 1 July 1916 and the German experience in the battle. Most simply ignore the nearly two years of warfare that preceded the momentous offensive. By focusing on one of the principal German formations involved in the Somme fighting, author Ralph Whitehead brings to life this little-known period, from the initial German advance on the Somme in September 1914 through the formation of the front that became so well known almost two years later.

The Whole Armour of God Anglican Army Chaplains in the Great War
Linda Parker
The Whole Armour of God examines and reassesses the role of the Anglican army chaplains in the Great War. The tensions and ambiguities of their role in the trenches resulted in criticism of their achievements. They gave a great deal of thought to the often conflicting demands of providing for the material and social needs of their men and maintaining their more spiritual role. It explains how they overturned orders and won the right to be with the troops in the front line. It tries to judge the chaplains by the ideas and standards of the time.

Battle on the Aisne 1914
The BEF and the Birth of the Western Front Jerry Murland
The river Aisne featured prominently in August 1914 during the Retreat from Mons and in September was the scene of bitter fighting when the BEF re-crossed it in their unsuccessful attempt to dislodge the German Army entrenched along the Northern Crest.
The fighting was hugely costly to the BEF which had already fought three major engagements in a month. The three British Corps lost over 700 officers and some 15,000 men. Historian Jerry Murland places the Aisne battles in their context, both from the BEF and German viewpoints. He highlights the early deficiencies and unpreparedness of the British Army staff and logistics organization as well as friction among the command structure, all of which hampered effective operations.

Mons 1914-1918
The Beginning and the End
Don Farr
It was close to the small southern Belgian town of Mons that the shooting war began or the British Expeditionary Force in August 1914. It was close to the same town that it ended for them over fifteen hundred days later. Mons only briefly played host to the BEF in August 1914. Nevertheless the town acquired a special place in the hearts and minds of the BEF and the British people, enhanced for many by the enduring stories of the Angel of Mons. Although the Western Front became mired in static trench warfare many miles from Mons, there was always a resolve on the part of the BEF that one day they would fight their way back there and liberate the town. This was finally achieved on the last night of the war, only hours before the Armistice ended it.

A Vital Endeavour Military Engineering in the Gallipoli Campaign
John
Dixon
Whilst the Gallipoli Campaign has received considerable interest over the years, the work of the Royal Engineers during that campaign has been largely overlooked. This book seeks to address this oversight to demonstrate the amount of engineering work required for a seaborne invasion. It looks at the structure of the Royal Engineers at the beginning of WWI and the way in which in which they sat within the structure of the MEF and how their work was controlled at Brigade, Division and Corps level. It also addresses briefly the work of the engineers on the nearby islands, such as Imbros, where GHQ was based, and Lemnos where engineers worked on everything from harbours to hospitals.

Crossing No Man’s Land Experience and Learning with the Northumberland Fusiliers in the Great War
Tony Ball
This book addresses the potentially deadly challenge of getting across No Man’s Land in good shape to fight at the other side. It explores the development of the British Army’s infantry battle tactics during the Great War using the largest infantry regiment, the Northumberland Fusiliers, as a case study. Principles and, in particular, practice are covered. The study demonstrates the transformation of the British Army from an essentially Victorian army to a recognizably modern army. 777732, $59.95 , $38.99 , Hardback, 336 pages
The Learning Process
The BEF’s Art of War on the Western Front, 1914-18
Andrew Rawson
The men who went to war in August 1914 fought completely differently to those who survived until the Armistice on 11 November 1918.
This is a study of the bloody learning process the British Expeditionary Force had to go through on the Western Front. The development of the tactics is explained as is the impact new weapons and ammunition had on the battles. The challenges presented when the Germans changed their defensive tactics or upgraded their fortifications is also looked at. Each battle and campaign is studied in turn.

Playing the Game
The British Junior Infantry Officer on the Western Front 19141918 Christopher Moore-Bick
The British Army expanded significantly during the First World War, creating a huge demand for new officers to lead the infantry through the horrors and privations of trench warfare. Thousands of civilians accepted commissions with little or no previous military experience, and success on the Western Front depended to a large extent on their ability to learn new skills and responsibilities quickly. This book examines the lives and careers of these junior infantry officers, focusing especially on the transition from civilian to soldier, their time in battle, and concludes with an examination of the psychological challenges encountered on the Western Front. 294758, $49.95 , $32.50 , Paperback, 330 pages
Muddling Through The Organisation of British Army Chaplaincy in World War One
Peter Howson
As with many other aspects of the British army, the outbreak of WWI started a process of change that was to result in a radically different provision of chaplaincy care once the war was over. Nothing was ever simple with army chaplaincy, and the war saw an increase in the number of churches becoming involved with the army. The structure had already been under pressure in the first decade of the century with the Catholic Church insisting on new rules. The creation of the Territorial Force added a new dimension after 1907, bringing new players into the mix, including the Jewish community. Both religious scholars and military historians will find this book of interest as it overturns a number of myths and puts chaplaincy in its wider context.

Pour la France
Guide
1914-18
Michael Cox Graham Watson
For many years serious students of the First World War have lacked a detailed Englishlanguage guide to the French Army. Apart from the British guide to the French army that was published in 1914, no such guide has been produced. In this comprehensive study, the authors seek to fill this gap through the provision of detailed information on the infantry and cavalry divisions of the French Army. For each division, the authors provide a full listing of all the constituent components, whether they were infantry, artillery, cavalry or engineers. Pour la France is destined to become a landmark First World War reference work.

Whether or not Henry Sinclair Horne was the ‘silent’ General he might certainly, if he were still alive, lay claim to being the ‘forgotten’ General of the Western Front. This belated biography assesses Henry Horne’s relationship with Haig and the Canadian Corps. It also evaluates his contribution to the technical advances of the artillery during the war and describes the battles which he conducted. It attempts to accord to Henry Horne the recognition and credit that he deserves but which has for so long been withheld.

Each article presents a detailed account of a specific German military operation on the Western Front - usually with detail down to battalion level. Most Unfavourable Ground
The Battle of Loos, 1915
Niall Cherry
1914 had been difficult for the BEF, many of its original members had died and replacements were hard to find. 1915 did not go much better. The culmination of several attacks by the BEF in 1915 was the attack in the Loos sector in September in a mining area north of Arras, the largest British offensive of the war thus far. Forced into an offensive in an unfavorable area, the BEF suffered heavy casualties and little gain. This text offers a detailed look at the planning, execution, and aftermath of the fighting using official records, reports, and personal stories.

An Airman’s Diary of the Last Year of the War

Eyewitness at Dieppe
The Only First-Hand Account of WWII’s Most Disastrous Raid Ross Reyburn
In August 1942, Allied forces mounted an attack on the German-held port of Dieppe; titled Operation Jubilee, it represented a rehearsal for invasion. The amphibious attack saw over 6,000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian, put ashore, tasked with destroying German structures and gathering intelligence. The doomed raid was an abject failure, and became Canada’s worst military disaster. Eyewitness at Dieppe is a long-overdue reissue of New Zealand-born writer Wallace Reyburn’s dramatic account of the raid. He was with the first soldiers clambering ashore, and aboard the last ship returning to England after six hours of carnage.

Secret Wartime Britain
Hidden Places That Helped Win the Second World War
Colin Philpott
During the Second World War, thousands of sites across Britain were requisitioned to support the war efforts. Additionally countless others were built from scratch regardless of cost. Often the purpose of these locations was concealed even from those living close by. The author of Secret Wartime Britain has compiled a fascinating collection of examples that still exist today, albeit often in different usage. They include underground factories, storage sites and headquarters; spy and communication centres; interrogation and POW camps; dummy sites; research facilities such as sinister Porton Down; treasure stores in stately homes and even royal retreats in the event of invasion such as Madresfield Court. 774941, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 264 pages

Eben-Emael and the Defence of Fortress Belgium, 1940 Clayton Donnell
On 10 May 1940, Fort Eben-Emael, considered to be Belgium’s most powerful fortress, fell. This huge structure, with its powerful artillery and infantry weapons, was the key to the Meuse and Albert Canal defences.Within minutes German Special Forces troops destroyed most of the fort’s weapons and observation capabilities. The following day, the garrison surrendered, and the door to Belgium and France was open. But Eben-Emael was only one of the nineteen forts of the fortified positions of Liège and Namur attacked in May 1940. Others held out for several days, and fought to the death. He demonstrates that their importance in the 1940 campaign has been seriously under reported. 779823, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 272 pages

Crete. The Battle for
Heraklion
1941
The Campaign
Revealed Through Allied and Axis Accounts
Yannis Prekatsounakis
Crete, 20 May 1941: the first campaign-sized airborne assault is launched. Many books have been written about this famous invasion, with the emphasis mainly on the battles for Maleme and Chania. The Battle for Heraklion - an epic struggle - remained largely forgotten. Yet the desperate fight for Heraklion had everything: street-fighting in the town; heavy losses on all sides; and tragic stories involving famous German aristocratic families. This book highlights personal stories and accounts. This fresh account of one of the Second World War’s most memorable battles is given added authority by the writer’s military background, together with his deep knowledge of the battlefield and his access to Greek accounts and sources.

Building the Gort Line
The BEF and its Defences in France
1939-40
Dave Thurlow
The main theme of this book is the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and the defenses it constructed in France during September 1939-May 1940. Although there have been many books written about the BEF, virtually all deal with the campaign in France and Flanders that cumulated in the evacuation from Dunkirk. No detailed account has ever been published on the defenses the BEF built in the Secteur Défensive de Lille – the front allocated to it by the French –along the Franco-Belgium border. This account of the Gort Line aims to fill this gap in our knowledge of Second War defences.

Surviving D-Day Tanks in Normandy
Craig Moore
On June 6, 1944, the Allied invasion of northern France began. Thousands of Allied soldiers, along with their equipment and vehicles, landed in Normandy on five main beaches. Most tanks arrived on the beaches by landing craft, and a few days later, after the construction of the temporary Mulberry harbor at Arromanches-les-Bains, tanks, along with supply trucks and more troops, started pouring from the ships into the ever-expanding beachhead. This guide book examines the surviving World War Two tanks, tank turrets and other armored fighting vehicles currently on display in Normandy, France, most of which took part in the fighting following the D-Day landings. 870232, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 112 pages
Hell on Hill 112
Georges Bernage
Following the failure at VillersBocage and a further failure at the end of June 1944 facing Hill 112 at the end of Operation Epsom, Monty relaunched an attack against Hill 112 on 10 July 1944. He sought to go around the D-Day objective of the capital of lower-Normandy via the south which, at that time, was still held by the Germans. However, as had been the case at Villers-Bocage, British troops failed again against the formidable Tiger tanks. Hill 112 would become a veritable “Norman Verdun”, a battle of destruction reminiscent of the hell of WWI. Richly illustrated, it recounting the operations hour by hour with numerous testimonies, accompanied by period photos as well as battlefield equipment, tank profiles and then-and-now photos.

Britain’s Coast at War Invasion Threat,
Coastal Forces,
Bombardment and Training for D-Day Neil R Storey
The whole of Britain’s coastline was involved in the struggle against the Nazis. In the early days, invasion was the main threat and the Channel counties and cities such as Plymouth, Portsmouth, and Brighton suffered grievously from aerial attack. Dover and the ‘Hell Fire Corner’ in the South East were shelled by German coastal batteries. In the North, Greenock, Gourock and the Scapa Flow saw training of troops for Norway, D Day and other campaigns and the return of rescued crews of sunk vessels of both sides. Preparation for D-Day centred on the South Coast in terms of planning, training and deployment. Inevitably the crucial role of Britain’s coastal ports attracted enemy bombing and V rocket attention. 001229, $49.95 , $32.50 , Hardback, 272 pages

Each autumn, millions of revelers from around the world join locals in their legendary Octoberfest, one of the world’s biggest festivals. Yet many visitors also know that Munich has a past so dark that it cast a looming shadow over the twentieth century: this was the city which played a unique role in the ascent of Adolf Hitler. An OperationalStrategic Study
Soviet General Staff Richard W. Harrison

This study examines the rapid advance to the outskirts of Budapest, where stubborn German-Hungarian resistance forced them to halt, after which the Soviets sought to surround the city, finally closing the ring at the end of December. This study also devotes considerable attention to the combat arms (artillery, tanks and mechanized forces, aviation, and engineering troops) during the operation. Operation Bagration
23 June-29 August 1944. The Rout of the German Forces
in Belorussia
Richard W. Harrison This covers the Red Army’s Belorussian strategic operation: the linchpin of the 10 major Soviet offensive efforts to clear the country of the invader. As a result, the German position along the western strategic direction was destroyed and the stage was set for an advance into Poland and Germany. The success of this operation also set the stage for the Red Army’s advance into the Baltic and South-Eastern Europe. Like most works generated by the General Staff, the Belorussian study divides the operation into preparation and conduct. Compiled and written by professional staff officers, this study provides a detailed look at one of the major operations of WWII. It offers another insight into the Red Army at the operational-strategic level. 510445, $60 , $39.50 , Paperback, 534 pages

While the Red Army’s arsenal at the start of the Second World War included weapons dating back to the Great War or earlier, the 1930s’ modernization program had introduced the automatic Tokarev pistol and self-loading Tokarev rifle. Its small arms were soon replaced by mass-produced submachine guns, new mortars and towed artillery pieces were introduced, as well as the BT light tank series, T-34 medium tank series, and more. All these weapons are covered with numerous images in this authoritative overview of the subject.

Eastern Front Sniper
Great Escape Forger
The
Life of Matthäus Hetzenauer
Roland Kaltenegger Martin Pegler
This is a long overdue and comprehensive biography of one of World War II’s most accomplished snipers. Mathäus Hetzenauer, the son of a Tyrolean peasant family, was born in 1924. He was drafted into the Mountain Reserve Battalian 140 at the age of 18 but discharged five months later. He received a new draft notice in January 1943 for a post in the Styrian Truppenübungsplatz Seetal Alps where he met some of the best German snipers and learned his art. Hetzenauer went on to fight in Romania, Eastern Hungary, and in Slovakia. As recognition for his more than 300 confirmed kills, he was awarded on the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on April 17, 1945. After nearly five years of Soviet captivity Mathäus Hetzenauer returned to Austriain 1950. 387945, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 192 pages
Marshal of Victory
The Autobiography of General Georgy Zhukov Georgy Zhukov
Geoffrey Roberts
Marshal of the Soviet Union
Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov remains a national hero in today’s Russia as the man who beat Hitler and saved both Russia and Europe from the Nazis. In his postwar autobiography Zhukov chronicled his brilliant career as he saw it and wanted it to be seen. His memoirs reveal the why and how of decision-making at the highest level of the Soviet command throughout the war, and his continued loyalty to the Soviet dictator despite being demoted after the war. Zhukovs writing is a fascinating and invaluable source for anyone interested in the war on the Eastern Front and presents intriguing insights into Zhukov the man as well as Zhukov the military commander.

The Work of Carl Holmstrom – POW #221. An Artist in Stalag Luft III Susan Holmstrom Kohnowich Carl Holmstrom’s superb artwork depicts life as a ‘kriegie’ in a unique manner. But, more than that, he spent the major part of his captivity in Stalag Luft III Prisoner of War Camp, famous for ‘The Great Escape’. As well as skillfully recording camp life, Carl forged invaluable official documents. He also sketched his fellow prisoners and encouraged others to take up drawing as hobby. Remarkably he saved over 200 examples of his work by carrying them on the appallingly arduous 1945 winter march from Poland into Germany. Post war, Carl Holmstrom said, “The drawings were made during imprisonment and represent a sincere effort to portray to the American people and especially to the relatives of the prisoners, intimate glimpses of Kriegie life.” His words proved to be prophetic.

Sherman Tanks of the Red Army
Peter Samsonov
More than 4000 examples of the famous diesel-fuelled M4A2 Sherman tank were sent to the Soviet Union during the Second World War under the Lend-Lease programme. These American-built vehicles were operated by Red Army crews against the Germans during some of the bitterest fighting on the Eastern Front – yet despite serving with distinction and being well-liked by their crews, relatively little has been written about these vehicles until now. Tank expert Peter Samsonov looks at the origins of the M4A2 in Soviet service and the machines that were received from the US as well as providing a detailed assessment of how they fared in combat on the front line. 658474, $19.99 , $12.99 , Paperback, 116 pages
Hitler’s Swedes
A History of the Swedish Volunteers in the Waffen-SS
Lars T. Larsson
Sweden was neutral during the Second World War, but despite this, thousands of Swedes wanted to participate in the war - the largest group in Finland, where over 10,000 Swedes applied to fight against the Red Army. Another much smaller group, which saw action against the same enemy, was the Swedish SS volunteers. While the Danish and Norwegian SS volunteers are fairly well known today, their Swedish counterparts remain more unknown. Still, they saw action on both the Eastern Front and NW Europe, and participated in some of the bloodiest clashes. This book is as much a history about the units, which the Swedes served in, as it is a story about the individuals themselves.

Pacific Victory
John Grehan
The conflict in the Far East began and ended with two of the most cataclysmic events of the World War Two – Pearl Harbor and the releasing of the atomic bombs. In between these epoch-changing actions a savage war was fought across vast swathes of the Pacific and Southeast Asia, which saw the forces of Imperial Japan overrunning the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, the Soloman Islands, Singapore and many other territories in or bordering the Pacific.
This commemorative 116-page publication chronicles the conflict and follows the Allies’ progress in winning back the occupied territories and bringing the war to an end.

End Game Burma 1945 Slim’s Masterstroke at Meiktila
Michael Pearson
When the Burma campaign is discussed, the turning point battles of Imphal and Kohima are most often thought of. However, General Bill Slims bold but risky plan to outflank the Japanese on the Irrawaddy at Mandalay deserves far more credit. In this detailed analysis of this crucial maneuver the author describes the plan, the risks, the actions, the seemingly insuperable logistic problems, and the efforts to retain US air support (for which Mountbatten was largely responsible).

Thunderbolts over Burma
Angus Findon
The Republic P-47 proved to be a formidable ground-attack aircraft and in RAF service was especially devastating during the fighting in Burma in 1945. There, the Thunderbolt was deployed using the ‘cab rank’ system that proved so effective for the Hawker Typhoons during the Battle for Normandy. In his remarkable memoir, never previously published and supported here by additional narrative from the aviation historian Mark Hillier, Angus Findon details not only his part in the Allied victory from his initial training, but graphically recounts what it was like to fly the Thunderbolt and operate in the harsh conditions of the Burmese airfields during the final months of the Second World War.

In the Service of the
Emperor
The Rise and Fall of the Japanese Empire, 1931–1945
N S Nash CBE
The expansion of the Japanese Empire between 1931 until its defeat in 1945 is one of the most extraordinary yet shocking episodes in human history.
Extraordinary in that a relatively non-industrialised island nation was prepared to go to war, concurrently, with China, the most populous country, Great Britain with its world-wide empire and the USA, the wealthiest and most powerful country on earth. Shocking, as those ‘in the service of the Emperor’ practiced persistent and unrestrained brutality as they conquered and occupied swathes of South East Asia. But, as this superbly researched work reveals, there is no denying their fighting and logistical expertise.

Drop Zone Burma
Adventures in Allied AirSupply 1943–45
Roger Annett
Air-dropped supplies were a vital part of the Allied campaign in Burma during World War II. The transportation of munitions, food and medical supplies was undertaken in the most difficult situations, both on the land and in the air. This book is based upon the memories of nine veterans of the campaign. It describes how they arrived in Burma and their previous wartime experiences and then explains their parts in the famous actions such as The Defence of Arakan, The Sieges of Imphal and Kohima, the Allied Counter-attack, the Advance to Mandalay and the Race to Rangoon. The author explains the background to this theatre of war and then puts the veterans memories into context as the campaign progresses.

Sino-Japanese Air War 1937-1945
The Longest Struggle
Hakan
Gustavsson
The Sino-Japanese war of 1937-1945 was the longest struggle of the Second World War. It started with the Japanese aggression in July 1937 and soon accelerated into a full-scale war with the Chinese Kuomintang government. Not getting much help from the outside world, the Kuomintang government, led by Chiang Kai-shek, soon closed a un-holy treaty with the Soviet Union to receive armament. This difficult relation with the Soviet Union lasted until 1941, when the USA became the main supplier of armament to China. Everything was to change with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, but the struggle was to continue until the end of the war in August 1945.

A Pilot’s War Against the Japanese in 1945 and the Battle of Sittang Bend
The ‘Real’ Spitfire Pilot
Flight Lieutenant D.M. Crook DFC’s Original Unpublished Manuscript
Flight Lieutenant D M Crook DFC
Flight Lieutenant David Moore Crook DFC’s original Spitfire Pilot ranks among the finest first-hand accounts published during WWII, particularly for a Battle of Britain airman. A Spitfire pilot during the epic aerial battles of the summer of 1940, ‘DMC’ became a decorated ace. However, he did not survive the war: his Spitfire inexplicably crashed into the sea off the Scottish coast on 18 December 1944. A married man and father, he remains missing. First published under wartime conditions in 1942, Spitfire Pilot was not heavily censored – unlike others at the time. DMC’s book was based on his entries in two Stationary Office lined notebooks, hastily scribbled between sorties, and using his pilot’s flying log book for reference.

Empty Sky
RAF Voices from the Fall of France & Battle of Britain
Colin Higgs
Bruce Vigar
One moment the sky would be full of aircraft wheeling and positioning for the best shot at the enemy; a sky full of danger and menace. The next instant there would just be a clear blue empty sky with the sun shining down on a calm and beautiful landscape. Such was the phenomenon experienced by pilots who fought in the key battles of France and Britain in the Summer of 1940. This book tells the story of nineteen men and women who were there.

Short Sunderland
The ‘Flying Porcupines’ in the Second World War Andrew Hendrie
In 1933, the Air Ministry issued a specification for a generalpurpose four-engine flying boat capable of operating from the outposts of the Empire. The result was the Sunderland. This covers its development and operations during and after WWII. It details aircraft’s ‘maid of all work’ role over the eastern Mediterranean, recce’s for the Royal Navy, evacuations from Yugoslavia, Greece, and Crete, and attacks on enemy subs. The Canadian, Australian, and Norwegian squadrons’ operations within Coastal Command are detailed plus those of the S Africans and New Zealanders. It also includes details of post-war operations such as the Berlin Airlift. Detailed appendices include lists of Sunderlands and all known successful attacks on enemy subs. 014540, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback,192 pages
The Territorial Air Force
The RAF’s Voluntary Squadrons, 1926–1957
Frances Louise Wilkinson
To date, little has been written about the Territorial Air Force as a voluntary military organization and no sustained analysis of its recruitment and social composition undertaken. Made up of three different parts, the Auxiliary Air Force, the Special Reserve and the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, these three separate and different groups have not featured significantly in existing literature. This book will present the history of the Territorial Air Force from its creation in the early 1920s until 1957. It will consider the ideas behind the formation of two different types of reserve for the RAF and it will examine the way in which men were recruited for the three different groups.

The Wellington Bomber
Martin W Bowman
The Wellington Bomber was omnipresent during the Second World War, employed in a variety of contexts in the fight against the Axis powers. The pilots who flew this aircraft did so with an immense amount of pride, and there is perhaps no-one better placed to tell the story of this incredible aircraft than these men. Martin Bowman has drawn together a selection of firsthand pilot testimonies in an effort to record authentically the experience of flying the much-mythologized Wellington during one of the most challenging eras of aviation history. The book is supplemented by two plate sections of stirring black and white images.

They Gave Me A Seafire
Commander R. ‘Mike’ Crosley, DSC*, RN.
First published in 1986 by Airlife, its publishing history has seen a great number of glowing reviews generated, coming from both historians and participants in the proceedings that the author so eloquently relays.
The book charts Crosley’s service career in the Fleet Air Arm during the entire period of the Second World War.
The narrative is well written in a frank and often scathingly critical way of Fleet Air Arm operations during the Second World War and beyond. The book looks set to bring the endeavors of Crosley to a whole new generation of enthusiasts, and it should appeal across the board to fans of aviation, naval history, and families and friends of Armed Forces, past and present.

They Flew Hurricanes
Adrian Stewart
The Hawker Hurricane, together with the Spitfire, is the most famous aircraft of the Second World War. Many pilots including Douglas Bader thought it was superior to the Spit but together they saved Britain from Nazi invasion and possible defeat. Adrian Stewart has produced a gloriously atmospheric and nostalgic book capturing the spirit of this great aircraft and the pilots who flew them. It tracks the aircraft as it was developed and improved and follows it to the many theatres of the war where it saw service. Among the lesser known are Burma and the hazardous convoy protection both in the Arctic and Mediterranean, flying from makeshift carriers.

Fleet Air Arm Legends: Fairey Swordfish
Matthew Willis Mathew Willis
Few aircraft encompass as many contradictions as the Fairey Swordfish – the legendary ‘Stringbag’ naval torpedo bomber was approaching antiquation at the start of the war yet struck mortal blows against some of the most powerful battleships in the Axis fleets. Naval aviation historian Matthew Willis explores how modern technology such as radar kept the Swordfish effective in the early years of the war. The story of the Swordfish’s service across the majority of theatres in WW2 is told here with never beforepublished accounts from veteran aircrews. Fleet Air Arm Legends: Supermarine Seafire
Renowned naval aviation author Matthew Willis tells the story of the Supermarine Seafire - a navalised version of the famous Spitfire adapted for use on aircraft carriers. Some 2646 examples were built and saw action with the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm from November 1942 until after the Korean War in the early 1950s. It was involved in combat during the Allied landings in North Africa (Operation Torch), the Allied invasions of Sicily and Italy, the D-Day landings, and Operation Dragoon in southern France. With the Pacific fleet, the Seafire proved capable of intercepting and destroying the feared Japanese kamikaze attack aircraft.

Hitler’s Air Defences
Stephen Wynn
The first Allied bombing raid on Berlin during WWII took place on 7 June 1940, when a French naval aircraft bombed the German capital, but the first British raid on German soil took place on the night of 10/11 May 1940, when RAF aircraft attacked Dortmund. Initially, Nazi Germany hadn’t given much thought to its aerial defenses. They had been on the offensive from the beginning of the war and Hitler believed that the Luftwaffe was the stronger air force. However, Germany’s defensive capabilities were forced to improve as Allied raids on towns and cities increased in size and frequency. Fighter aircraft were included as part of anti-aircraft defenses and flak units became more skilled at taking down Allied aircraft.

Eagles of the Luftwaffe: Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A, F and G
Dan Sharp
When it appeared in the skies over Europe in 1941, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A was the best fighter in the world. It was more than a match for the best Spitfires the RAF could field and began shooting them down in ever-increasing numbers. Only the introduction of the Spitfire IX with its two-stage supercharged Merlin overturned its supremacy. This book tells the story of the legendary fighter with previously unseen drawings and photos which shed new light on the aircraft’s origins.

Lend-Lease and Soviet Aviation in the Second World War
Vladimir Kotelnikov
Seventy-five years have passed since the Second World War yet the books and articles still keep coming in a never-ending stream discussing the question of what role the deliveries of arms and materials by Soviet allies played in the victory of the Red Army. The author of this book for the first time has assembled a huge volume of information related to the delivery of aviation equipment from the UK and USA. Based on documents from Russian and foreign archives, museums, and veterans’ recollections, the author has made a qualitative and quantitative appraisal of the influence of these deliveries upon the Soviet war effort and airpower during the conflict.

Valour in the Air
Stephen Bridgewater
Britain’s Victoria Cross is one of the most prized medals in military history.
The advent of aerial warfare during World War One meant that pilots of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and, later, the RAF were putting themselves in grave danger on an almost daily basis. It was therefore inevitable that the new breed of aerial knights would soon feature within the ranks of VC holders. By the end of the Great War, some 19 members of aircrew had been awarded the VC for their gallantry, and by the end of World War Two the total number of aviators who had received the award had risen to 51, a figure that stands today.
This special publication tells their story. 295783, $18.99 , $12.50 , Paperback, 116 pages
The Role of Intelligence in the Battle of Britain
Norman Ridley
The Battle of Britain was fought between two airborne military elites and was a classic example of pure attack against pure defense. Though it was essentially a ‘war of attrition’, it was an engagement in which the gathering, assessment and reaction to intelligence played a significant role on both sides.
The result of three years intensive research, in this book the author analyses the way in which both the British and German Intelligence services played a part in the Battle of Britain, thereby attempting to throw light on an aspect of the battle that has been hitherto underexposed to scrutiny.

Though the visitors had doubts about an aircraft made of wood, they returned to the US with full details of the design. Following America’s entry into the war, formal requests for Mosquitoes began in 1942. In this highly illustrated work, the author explores the full story of why the Americans wanted Mosquitoes, how they went about obtaining them, and their noted success and popularity with USAAF units.

Bases of Bomber Command Then and Now
Roger Freeman
Sixty years ago, over 100 aerodromes in east and northeastern England were occupied by the men and machines of RAF Bomber Command. The tenure of the majority of the bases was brief — some six years — but during that time more than 55,000 men lost their lives while flying from them to attack targets on the Continent. Each airfield has been explored and photographed in the ‘then and now’ style of Roger Freeman’s previous books for After the Battle on the US Eighth and Ninth Air Forces. The physical development, construction and operational history of every airfield is described in detail and all are illustrated with wartime and present-day aerial photographs.

The Battles for Monte Cassino Then and Now
Jeffrey
Plowman
Perry Rowe
The Battles for Monte Cassino encompassed one of the few truly international conflicts of the Second World War. A strategic town on the road to Rome, the fighting lasted four months and cost the lives of more than 14,000 men from eight nations. Between January and May 1944, forces from Britain, Canada, France, India, New Zealand, Poland and the United States, fought a resolute German army in a series of battles in which the advantage swung back and forth, from one side to the other. From fire-fights in the mountains to tank attacks in the valley; from river crossings to street fighting, the four battles of Cassino encompass a series of individual operations unique in the history of the Second World War.

The Desert War Then and Now Jean Paul Pallud
Following Mussolini’s declaration of war in June 1940, initially Italy faced only those British troops based in the Middle East but as the armed confrontation in the Western Desert of North Africa escalated, other nations were drawn in — Germany, Australia, India, South Africa, New Zealand, France and finally the United States to wage the first major tank-versus-tank battles of the Second World War.
First tracing the history of the very early beginnings of civilization in North Africa, and on through the period of Italian colonization, Jean Paul Pallud begins his account when the initial shots were fired at the 11th Hussars as they approached Italian outposts near Sidi Omar in Libya.

The War in the Channel Islands Then and Now Winston G Ramsey
Besides being the only British territory occupied by the Germans in the Second World War, it is perhaps less generally known that the Channel Islands were fortified out of all proportion to the rest of Hitler’s Atlantic Wal. First-hand accounts of all seven Commando raids are brought together for the first time. A summary of how the Islands’ hotels were put to use by their German guests may intrigue present-day visitors, and a review of the war museums gives an insight into the variety of relics that enthusiasts have had the foresight to preserve. The war cemeteries are described, and there is a list of every grave of both sides of the two World Wars. Annotated aerial photographs form an important aspect of the book.

Hungarian Arms and Armour of World War
Two Peter Mujzer
Between the world wars, Hungary was a relatively small country aiming to recover territory lost because of WWI, and its Army was trained, equipped, armed, and prepared to fight to this end. At the outset of WWII, Hungarian involvement in the war was minimal. Then, suddenly, this small country found itself in a total war with the Allied nations. Although in 1941, this war was remote, in 1944–45 it arrived in Hungary, crushing the kingdom. This book gives a brief history of the Hungarian Army (Honvédség), focusing on the main armament of the land forces: armored vehicles, artillery pieces, infantry weapons and motor vehicles. The 170 illustrations include 18 original color photos and 18 color profiles, skillfully painted by Tamás Deák. 870645, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 96 pages
German Tanks of World War Two
Craig Moore
In World War Two, allied armies were issued with identification guides to the enemy armor they might encounter on the battlefield. These black and white printed books were a vital aide for soldiers dealing with the confusion of fighting and the difficulty of identification at distance or in all weathers.
The German army deployed a wide variety of tanks in many different variants and forms of camouflage. This book features a unique collection of color illustrations, showing in detail the vehicles’ development and differences in design. The artwork is accompanied by descriptions and technical information about each tank making this an essential handbook for anyone interested in the German armed forces and World War Two armor.

Aircraft Engine Test Beds
British Jet Fighters and Bombers
Tony Buttler
During the late 1940s and into the 1950s, a number of British jet fighter and bomber aircraft were fitted with new, different, or additional engines, both jet and rocket, to enable them to serve as test beds for those specific powerplants. These aircraft types included fighters such as the de Havilland Vampire, Gloster Meteor and Javelin, and Hawker Hunter, the one-off Hawker P.1072 and the English Electric Canberra, Short Sperrin, Vickers Valiant and Avro Vulcan bombers. Accompanied by over 200 images, some of which are published here for the first time, it is an invaluable reference tool for both aviation enthusiasts interested in experimental and trails aircraft and modelers specializing in jet aircraft.

The Real Dad’s Army John Grehan
The news was devastating.
Hitler’s panzers had broken through French defenses, and if France fell, Britain might be next.
So it was, on the evening of May 14, 1940, the call went out for volunteers to enroll in the ‘Local Defense Volunteers’. That name was soon to change, becoming the much-loved Home Guard.
The British government had expected 150,000 people to volunteer. By the end of May 400,000 had put their names down.
Packed with an unrivaled collection of photographs, this special publication is the story of the real Home Guard which is even more entertaining than its fictional counterpart. 295301, $18.99 , $12.50 , Paperback, 116 pages
P-51 Mustang Warbirds
Nicholas A. Veronico Jim Dunn
This fascinating story begins with post-World War Two sales of surplus Mustangs to various foreign governments and a few civilian customers. More than a decade later, in 1957 and 1958, the US Air Force auctioned off its remaining inventory of P-51s. These Mustangs became high-speed executive transports in the days before the introduction of the LearJet and other corporate aircraft. Today, these warbirds are the stars of airshows around the world. The effort to restore them to as close to their original wartime condition as possible has reached new levels of authenticity. With over 140 images, accompanied by service histories, this book shows the fighters where they should be seen – in the air. 823011, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 128 pages

Clive Ellis
Meticulously researched over the course of 20 years, this color rendition of the Luftwaffe’s Eagles in defeat accurately portrays the stark reality of the desperate days in 1940 when Britain stood alone. Using an extraordinary combination of stunning colorized images and extensively researched text, this book gives a new and different perspective on the battle between ‘the few’ and Hitler’s vaunted Luftwaffe. It contains some 200 photographs of downed enemy aircraft, painstakingly colorized today, showing the rare spectacle of new color from the Battle of Britain period.

Hitler - A Life in Pictures
Bob Carruthers
This exceptional source is probably the best of the contemporary accounts of Hitler in power, albeit from a heavily pro-Nazi stance. The testimonies collected were based on interviews conducted in 1933 and 1934. Millions of ordinary Germans fell under Hitler’s spell and this book is a creation of those emotions. It is very much a product of its time.

Heydrich
Butcher of Prague
Ian Baxter
Reinhard Heydrich along with Heinrich Himmler, whose deputy he was, will always be regarded as one of the most ruthless of the Nazi elite. Even Hitler described him as ‘a man with an iron heart’.
He established his fearsome reputation in the 1930s, as head of the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), the intelligence organization which neutralized opposition to the Nazi Party by murder and deportation. He organized Kristalnacht and played a leading role in the Holocaust, chairing the 1942 Wannsee Conference which formalized plans for the ‘Final Solution’.
Heydrich’s shocking and leading role in the Nazi regime is graphically portrayed in this Images of War book. 097567, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 144 pages
Himmler: Hitler’s Henchman
Ian Baxter
Heinrich Himmler has a strong claim to be Adolf Hitler’s most powerful subordinate, and was certainly the main architect of the Holocaust. Appointed Reichsfuhrer-SS in 1929, he built the SS into a million strong paramilitary force and took control of the Nazi concentration camps system. In 1943, he became Chief of German Police and Minister of the Interior with command of the Gestapo as well as the Einsatzgruppen. In the closing stages of the War he was appointed by Hitler as Commander of Army Group Vistula. Realizing the war was lost, he attempted to open peace talks with the Allies, which prompted Hitler to dismiss him in April 1945. Arrested by British forces, he committed suicide on 22 May 1945.

In 1944 it was deployed to Normandy before the carnage of the Falaise Pocket. Soon after it was back in action during the bitter winter fighting in the Ardennes, before returning to the Eastern Front where it was shifted from one disintegrating part of the front to another.

Leo Marriott

Allied Armies in Sicily and Italy, 1943–1945
Simon Forty
The Italian campaign was one of the most debated of the Second World War, splitting the American and British allies, and causing great disharmony. After the fall of Rome and the surrender of Italy, the invasion of Normandy led to the Italian campaign becoming a sideshow as the ‘D-Day Dodgers’ fought their way through Italy to the Alps against a grinding defense and extreme weather. In a sequence of 200 wartime photographs Simon Forty sums up the major events of the conflict – from the landings on Sicily to the crossing of the Po. Commanded first by Sir Harold Alexander and then Mark Clark, the Allied armies (US Fifth and British Eighth) drew men not only from Britain, the United States, France and Poland but from all over the Commonwealth.

The Vought F4U Corsair
Martin W Bowman

This comprehensive new book combines technical information and detailed development history with a fascinating combat history told, in many cases, by the Second World War and Korean War pilots themselves. Well researched, readable and illustrated with scores of rare and previously unpublished photographs, The Vought F4U Corsair is the perfect book for any fan of the ‘bent wing bird’.

American Infantry Weapons of the Second World War
Michael Green
During the arduous campaigns in theaters of war from the Pacific to North West Europe, American infantry weapons played a key role in the eventual victory over the Axis forces. In so doing they earned a special reputation for ruggedness and reliability. In addition to being used by US ground forces they were widely adopted by other Allied nations. Expert author Michael Green puts the full range of small arms, be they rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, pistols, machine guns as well as mortars, anti-tank weapons and close infantry support artillery under the microscope. The typically informative text completes the wide range of photographic images. 827226, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 200 Pages

The M4 Medium Tank - the Sherman – was one of the most famous tanks of the Second World War. It was produced in greater numbers than any other Allied tank, it fought on every front – in Western Europe, on the Eastern Front, in North Africa, Burma, the Pacific – and it continued to serve effectively as a front-line fighting vehicle in the Korean War, the Arab-Israeli wars, the Indo-Pakistani wars. Pat Ware’s new history of this remarkable tank covers in detail its design and development, its technical specifications and the many variants that were produced, and he reviews its operational role in conflicts across the world.

Fighting in Ukraine
A Photographer at War
David Mitchelhill-Green
Although many pictorial books have been published on Germany’s hapless invasion of the Soviet Union, they are typically a collection of soldiers’ snapshots or ‘official’ photographs taken by Propagandakompanien (PK) reporters. This book is different. It contains an extraordinary personal record of the war captured by a professional photographer, Walter Grimm. The 300 evocative black and white images provide an absorbing insight into the daily life and privations of the ordinary German soldier amid the maelstrom of history’s largest conflict.

Barbarossa to Moscow
Nik Cornish
This third volume of the photographic history of the Second World War on the Eastern Front records the sequence of Red Army offensives that pushed the Wehrmacht back across Russia after the failure of Operation Citadel. Previously unpublished images show the epic scale of the build-up to the Kursk battle and the enormous cost in terms of lives and material of the battle itself. They also show that the military initiative was now firmly in Soviet hands, as the Germans were on the defensive and in retreat. The photographs track the sequence of events on the ground, and they show the equipment and the weapons used by both sides.

War in the Balkans
The Battle for Greece and Crete 1940-1941
Jeffrey Plowman
This photographic history traces the course of the entire Balkan campaign from the first moves of the Italians through Albania and the invasion of Jugoslavia and Bulgaria by German forces through to the battle for Greece and the final airborne assault on Crete. Using never before seen photos, he gives equal weight to every stage of the campaign, rather than combining the first stages and treating them as an introduction to the battle for Crete – and covers all the forces involved – the Germans, the Greeks, and the Commonwealth troops. By shifting focus to the mainland, he views the campaign as a whole, and offers a balanced portrayal of a conflict that is often overlooked.

Armoured Warfare in the Far East 19371945
Anthony Tucker-Jones
Anthony Tucker-Jones’s photographic history is a fascinating visual introduction to the armored battles of the Second World War in the Far East and Asia-Pacific regions, from 1937 to 1945. In contrast to the experience of the armies that fought in Europe and North Africa, in the Far East tanks remained an infantry support weapon, and their role is often neglected in histories of the conflict. The role of armored vehicles in each theater of the war in the Far East is shown in a selection of over 150 rare wartime photographs that record armor in action in China, Manchuria, Mongolia, Malaya, Burma and during the battles fought for the Pacific islands. 851672, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 160 Pages
Battle of Kursk 1943
Hans Seidler

Battle of Kursk 1943, is an illustrated account of this battle of the war on the Eastern Front, when the Germans threw 900,000 men and 2,500 tanks against 1,300,000 soldiers and 3,000 tanks of the Red Army in a battle of attrition. Unlike many pictorial accounts of the war on the Eastern Front, this book draws upon both German and Russian archive material. The images convey the true scale, intensity and horror of the fighting at Kursk. 843936, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 160 pages

Hitler’s Mountain Troops 1939-1945 The Gebirgsjager
Ian Baxter
Hitler’s mountain troops or Gebirgsjager were a group of elite soldiers ready for battle, whatever the conditions. These mountain men were trained to ski, climb and endure long marches, survive appalling conditions and were given a role as crack shock troops. Yet many of the campaigns in which the Gebirgsjager fought were on level ground where they had little opportunity to demonstrate their unique skills. Instead, they were invariably employed as assault infantry in conventional battle. This superb book shows the Gebirgsjager in training and action from Poland, Norway and France, through Yugoslavia, the Eastern Front and in the closing stages of the War.

Panzer III at War 1939 – 1945
Paul Thomas
With comprehensive captions and text, this book is the second installment of the Author’s pictorial history of the German Panzers in the Second World War. The Panzer III saw almost continuous action from the annexation of Czechoslakia, the invasion of Poland and then France and the Low countries, in North Africa, Italy, the Eastern Front and, finally, the retreat back into Germany. Between 1936 and 1945, many thousands of Panzer III’s were built. It quickly demonstrated its superiority on the battlefield and, for most of the war, remained a match for its opponents’ heavy tanks. The collection of images shows how these formidable tanks were adapted and up-gunned to face the ever-increasing enemy threat.

Fallschirmjager: Elite German Paratroops In World War II
Jon Sutherland
The photos in this book are taken from an unpublished album that belonged to a member of the elite German Paratroopers. The revealing images that Jon Sutherland has compiled for us depict these struggles in dramatic detail, ranging from photographs taken en route to Crete of the paratroopers in a JU52 to 20 May 1941, when Plieschen was dropped over Crete. 843189, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 176 pages

From Leningrad to Narva An Illustrated Study of the Battles in the Northern Baltic Area,
January-September 1944
Kamen Nevenkin
In January 1944 the Red Army succeeded in putting to an end one of the most dramatic sieges in the history of warfare, that of Leningrad. The Soviet spearheads quickly expelled the Wehrmacht from the city, but once they reached the border with Estonia, they were stopped dead in their tracks by a very determined Axis resistance. There, at river Narva, Germans, Estonians, and Waffen SS volunteers and conscripts from all over Europe stood firm for several months against numerous Soviet attacks. By doing so, they were able to cripple the ambitious military and political plans of Joseph Stalin, and to effectively postpone the Soviet reconquest of the Baltic States for more than half a year. 583186, $41.95 , $27.50 , Hardback, 80 pages

Working undercover on the stated objective of investigating trade opportunities, he discovered that many of the Poles and Czechoslovaks who had assisted British units during the conflict had been killed or imprisoned by the Communist authorities. Brown Waters of Africa Portuguese Riverine Warfare 1961-1974 John P. Cann
During World War II, Portugal played its cards uncommonly well as a neutral and subsequently became a member of NATO. By 1960, when other colonial powers were abandoning their empires, Portugal made the decision to cling to its possessions, as they had been Portuguese for over 400 years. Without them Portugal saw itself as only a small European country, whereas with them, it would be a great nation. Portugal ultimately would fight a 13-year debilitating war against various nationalist movements in Africa to retain its possessions. By the mid-1950s, it became apparent to the Portuguese Navy that it would fight in Africa, and it began to make preparations. This is the story of that conversion and the great “battle of the rivers” in Africa. 916563, $49.95 , $32.50 , Paperback, 264 pages

Spy Planes
Mark
Ayton
The term ‘spy plane’ is epitomized by the highperformance Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. Even today, 22 years after retirement, the SR-71 is still top of the bill of aircraft designed and built for snooping. However, nations that operate any type of ‘spy plane’ never refer to them as such.
Reconnaissance is the word!
The RAF is at it, as are the USAF and the US Navy, Russia, China, and the French. All regularly fly missions spying on neighbor and foe alike.
But there is a variety of aircraft used for the role, from the menacing looking Blackbird through to small, twin-engine turboprops. This much-anticipated special lifts the lid on them and reveals some really cool aircraft, making Spy Planes an essential read.

In the Service of the Sultan
A first-hand account of the Dhofar Insurgency Ian Gardiner
While the Americans were fighting in Vietnam, a struggle of even greater strategic significance was taking place in the Middle East: the Sultanate of Oman guards the entrance to the Arabian Gulf, and thus controls the movement of oil from that region. This book tells the largely unknown story of a small number of British officers who led Muslim soldiers in this hard-fought antiinsurgency war which has shaped today’s Gulf. After outlining the historical, geographical and political background, the book describes military action in a stark and mountainous environment.

Patrolling the Cold War Skies
Reheat Sunset Philip Keeble
This is a flying adventure book set within the framework of the Cold War and told through the lens of the RAF Pilot’s Flying Log Book. Philip Keeble’s logbooks cover ten different types of aircraft: from learning to fly in a Chipmunk trainer in 1965, right through to flying the Tornado F3 Fighter in 1994. These true tales are told as anecdotal yarns, ones that put flesh on the bare bones of a logbook in an exciting, amusing and self-deprecating way. The narratives stir up memories of escapades and the events leading up to them. They depict exciting sorties, dangerous emergencies, stupid moments, funny occurrences, and operational practices, but also show the balance and contrast of operating in the Cold War. 555965, $40 , $26.50 , Hardback, 288 pages

Britain’s Military Helicopters
Chris Gibson
Beginning as a curiosity, Britain’s armed forces soon embraced the helicopter with the Whirlwind for the Royal Navy and RAF and the Skeeter for the Army Air Corps. Finding these limited, it was the advent of the turboshaft that revolutionized it, with the Belvedere, Wessex, Wasp and Scout bringing new capabilities. The next generation, the Puma, Lynx, Sea King and Chinook, all designed for turboshaft power, made the helicopter essential. This book describes the evolution of the helicopter in British service, from their beginnings with the Sikorsky R-4B test flown by Fleet Air Arm pilots in the USA to the latest Wildcat and Apache Guardian. Lavishly illustrated throughout with previously unpublished original photographs from archives. 820263, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback,96 pages
Dassault
Etendard
Frédéric Lert
Super
The Dassault Super Étendard, which became the Super Étendard Modernisé, had a remarkable career. It was a humble aircraft that was often faced with thankless and difficult tasks. There was no excessive power in this aircraft, but simply a remarkable versatility that made it the backbone of French carrier aviation for 40 years. Solid, reliable, well-designed, and adaptable, it was an aircraft that France regularly upgraded. It gained notoriety for its role in anti-ship missions flown by Argentinian pilots, but paradoxically, France never used it in combat in this role. On the other hand, the aircraft was extensively used as a bomber in numerous wars in Lebanon, Syria, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan. Contains over 160 images. 820331, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 96 pages

Lynx
The Final Year in French Service
Henri-Pierre Grolleau
When introduced in 1978, the Westland Lynx constituted a massive improvement over the helicopters then in service with the French Navy for antisubmarine duties and quickly became a highly popular rotorcraft. From an asset specializing in antisubmarine warfare, it was soon turned into a multirole platform that proved incredibly versatile, performing an extremely wide range of roles. However, after more than 40 years in service, the Lynx was an aging design, and in August 2020, it was withdrawn from Aéronautique Navale service. Containing over 200 full-color images, this book charts the final year in French service of this much-loved machine. 870126, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 96 pages

Avro Vulcan B Mk2 1955-2015
David W Fildes
In 1955, the Vulcan B.Mk2 was proposed and a new wing modification was designed to take advantage of the more powerful Olympus engines and a new stand-off missile known as Blue Steel. The new wing was known as the Phase 2C development. Avro were given a contract for an aerodynamic prototype on 10 July 1956, with the first prototype VX777 making its first flight with the new wing on 31 August 1957. The Avro Vulcan was originally designed as a high-altitude medium bomber, but the operating requirement changed when it was required to fly at a low level. Thanks to the Vulcan’s inherently low aspect wing and structure, it proved more suitable to this role than the high aspect wings of the Vickers Valliant and Handley Page Victor. 822687, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 96 pages

Operation Restore Hope
US Military Intervention in Somalia and the Battle of Mogadishu, 1992-1994
Peter Baxter
After the Cold War, the old bond of East/West patronage in Africa was broken, weakening the first crop of independent revolutionary leadership on the continent who no longer had the support of one or other of the superpowers. With collapse of the Soviet Union, all this changed. The question of global/strategic security devolved into regional peacekeeping and peace enforcement, characterized primarily by the Balkans War, but also many other minor regional squabbles across the developing world that erupted as old regimes fell and nations sought to build unity out of the ashes. This is the story of the international intervention that took place in Somalia, the successes, failures and lessons learned.

Within are details of the Spanish army, its organization, tactics and reforms to meet the needs of the theater, the fledgling Spanish military aviation which claimed a number of world firsts in this campaign, and their North African auxiliaries and opponents. The Rif War is illustrated with a selection of color artworks and specially commissioned maps. 377013, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 82 pages

Sanctuary Lost: Portugal’s Air War for Guinea 1961-1974
Volume 1 - Outbreak and Escalation (19611966)
Matthew M. Hurley
José Augusto Matos
From 1963 to 1974, Portugal and its nationalist enemies fought an increasingly intense war for the independence of “Portuguese” Guinea, then a colony but now the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. For most of the conflict, Portugal enjoyed virtually unchallenged air supremacy, and increasingly based its strategy on this advantage. The Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa, or FAP) consequently played a crucial role in the war. Indeed, throughout the conflict, the FAP, despite the many challenges it faced, proved to be the most effective and responsive military argument against the PAIGC, which was fighting for Guinea’s independence. Vol 1 of Sanctuary Lost is extensively illustrated with photographs and specially commissioned color artworks. 059995, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 100 pages

CIA Paramilitary Operations in Tibet 1957-1974
Ken Conboy
This is the story of how the US government – primarily through the CIA – came to encourage Tibetan defiance in one of the most extreme covert campaigns of the Cold War. In Tibet, new kinds of equipment were combat-tested under the most extreme conditions imaginable. New communications techniques were tried and perfected. In many cases, these lessons learned would be applied to other Cold War battlefields like Vietnam, Laos, and elsewhere. Tibet, therefore, became a vital proving ground for CIA case officers and their spycraft. It includes over 60 color and black and white photographs of the participants in the campaign and their insignia, along with specially commissioned color artworks illustrating the aircraft in flight. 510216, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 82 pages

Hunting the Viet Cong — The Counterinsurgency Campaign in South Vietnam, 1961-1963
Volume 1: The Strategic Hamlet Programme
Darren Poole
Hunting the Viet Cong: Counterinsurgency in South Vietnam 1961–1963 presents a new perspective on the early stages of the Vietnam War. It shows how the counterinsurgency policy of the American-backed Diem government was effective in separating the Viet Cong from many of their supporters, forced many VC into hiding and created a platform for further government success. This first volume, The Strategic Hamlet Programme, examines both the Counterinsurgency Plan and the Strategic Hamlet Programme and explains how these began to strangle insurgent activity. Using documents captured from the Viet Cong, VC prisoner interviews and American military reports the book reveals just how close the insurgents came to being beaten.

Air
Forces, Aircraft and Air Warfare of Afghanistan, 1989-2001
Lukas Müller
Since 1978, Afghanistan has been ravaged by an uninterrupted war fought by a host of diverse parties. The military history of an entire series of coups of the late 1970s, and the resulting military intervention of the former USSR was widely published on over time. On the contrary, the period from 1989 until 2001 is by far the poorest-recorded. This period encompassed the downfall of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan in the face of a near-simultaneous dissolution of the USSR, a military coup d’etat and an onslaught by multiple Pakistan-supported armed opposition parties in 1992, the sudden emergence of the Taliban and their alliance with al-Qaeda that launched the murderous terror attacks against the United States. 118662, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 72 pages

The MiG-21 in Yugoslav and Serbian Air Force service, 1962-2019
Bojan Dimitrijevic Milan Micevski
The Mikoyan i Gurevich MiG-21 has been built in greater numbers than any other combat aircraft since 1945. It also saw service with more air forces than any other type manufactured over the last 70 years. Locally designated the ‘L’ (for Lovac or fighter), for more than half a century over 260 MiG-21s in 12 different versions and sub-variants formed the backbone of the Yugoslav Air Force and Air Defense Force (JRV i PVO) and later the Serbian Air Force (RV i PVO). The book is based upon the author’s extensive research in Serbian and Croatian archives, museums and interviews with veterans that flew this type. Most of the photos in this volume have never been published before.

Tsar Bomba
Live Testing of Soviet Nuclear Bombs, 19491962 Krzysztof Dabrowski
On 30 October 1961, the USSR conducted a live test of the most powerful nuclear weapon ever created. Codenamed ‘Ivan’, and known in the West as the ‘Tsar Bomba.’ Tsar Bomba unleashed about 58 megatons of TNT, creating a 5-mile-wide fireball and then a mushroom that peaked at an altitude of 59 miles. The shockwave created by the RDS-202 eradicated a village 34 miles from ground zero, caused widespread damage to nature, and created a heat wave felt as far as 170 miles away. And still, this was just one of 45 tests of nuclear weapons conducted in the USSR in October 1961 alone.

Brigate Rosse
Far-left Guerillas in Italy, 1970-1988
David Francois
Widespread unrest and political violence shook Italy time and again during the decades following the end of the Second World War, but never as much as during the 1970s and the 1980s. Seeking to counter political enemies, in order to create a revolutionary state through an armed struggle, and to remove Italy from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, in 1970, leftists in Italy began to form the Brigade Rosse –the Red Brigades.
Drawing upon decades of research with the help of official documentation and the recollections of participants, Brigate Rosse is a detailed study of a major armed leftist movement that shook the fundaments of the Italian state of the 1970s and the 1980s.

Amaru Tincopa
Based on extensive research in the official archives of the Fuerza Aérea del Perú (FAP), as well as documentation from multiple private sources, ‘The Air Wars Between Ecuador and Peru, Volume 1’ is the story of a littleknown and brief, yet intensive and bitter aerial war. Air Wars between Ecuador and Peru
Volume 2 - Falso Paquisha! Aerial Operations over the Condor Mountain Range, 1981
Amaru Tincopa
Based on diverse interpretations of the Real Ceduls (Royal Proclamations) by the Spanish monarchs of earlier centuries, the almost 200-year-old border dispute between Ecuador and Peru became one of the longest-running international armed conflicts in the Western hemisphere. Numerous attempts at a negotiated definition of the borders failed, and the two countries fought at least three wars in the 20th Century. Drawing upon extensive research and documentation from multiple private sources, The Air Wars between Ecuador and Peru, Volume 2 reconstructs the history of the air forces of both nations, and the little-known story of their brief, yet bitter clashes of early 1981.

COIN Operations in Paraguay
Dirty Little Wars 19561980 Antonio Luis Sapienza
From 1954 Paraguay was held in the grip of a Right-wing dictatorship under General Alfredo Stroessner. In the years that followed, a number of opposition groups resorted to armed struggle in order to achieve their aims. Government countermeasures were brutal, with torture and extrajudicial killings routinely employed. This is the first detailed English-language account of these armed opposition groups, their aims, their structures, and their campaigns against the government. It details the ruthless government reaction, and the support and opposition of other Latin American governments to the situation in Paraguay. It includes over 190 photographs and 18 specially commissioned full-color artworks.

Paulista War
The Last Civil War in Brazil, 1932
Javier Garcia de Gabiola
The Year 1932 was not only the year in which the famous carnival of Rio de Janeiro was organized for the first time, or the giant statue of the Christ the Redeemer was placed on top of the Corcovado mountain ridge: tragically, it was also the year of the last civil war fought in Brazil.
On 9 July 1932, about 35,000 men from two Brazilian federal states - Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul – rose in arms against the dictatorship of Getúlio Vargas, demanding the return to constitutionality and democracy. This movement became known as the ‘Constitutionalist’, while its members became known as the ‘Paulistas’. The Brazilian government reacted with brute force: it deployed over 100,000 troops supported by heavy artillery and combat aircraft.

Wings of Iraq
Volume 1 - The Iraqi Air Force, 1931-1970
Tom Cooper Milos Sipos
Officially established on 22 April 1931, around a core of five pilots and 32 aircraft mechanics, the Royal Iraqi Air Force was the first official native military flying service of any Arab country. Founded to support the Iraqi armed forces and the British against revolts by local tribes, it saw extensive combat and gradually grew into a potent force. While virtually ‘born in battle’, the Iraqi Air Force remains one of the least known and most misinterpreted military services in the Middle East. Richly illustrated, Volume 1 of Wings of Iraq provides a uniquely compact yet comprehensive guide to its operational history, its crucial officers and aircraft, and its major operations from 1931 to 1970.

Wings of Iraq
Volume 2 - The Iraqi Air Force, 1970-1980
Tom Cooper Milos Sipos
Wings of Iraq, Volume 2 tells the story of the Iraqi Air Force between 1970 and 1980. In doing so it examines the air force’s involvement in the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War, and then the showdown with the Iranian-supported Kurdish insurgency in northern Iraq in 1974-1975. These two affairs taught the Iraqis that numbers alone did not make an air force. Correspondingly, during the second half of the 1970s, Baghdad embarked on a project based on full technology transfer from France, which was intended to result in preparing the IrAF for the twenty-first century. Richly illustrated, this book provides a comprehensive guide to its operational history, its crucial officers and aircraft, and its major operations between 1970 and 1980.

Volume 5 seeks to shed light on this difficult time. It draws upon decades of research, including previously unpublished interviews with men now dead, archive sources than have never before been translated into a European language, and material which, though available in obscure Arabic publications, has been almost entirely neglected by aviation historians. This volume is richly illustrated with specially commissioned color artworks illustrating the aircraft flown by the air forces in the Arab world during this dynamic period of time.

In the Claws of the Tomcat
US Navy F-14 Tomcat in Combat, 1987-2000
Tom Cooper
Equipped with well-balanced air wings, huge aircraft carriers have formed the backbone of the United States Navy’s doctrine and strategy since WWII. Packing an enormous punch, their purpose is to exercise control over enormous portions of airspace – in the offence or defence. The widespread belief is that USN F-14s saw next to no air combat against Iran, and even less so during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. In reality, Tomcats engaged dozens of opponents, often on the verge of the engagement envelope of their powerful AWG-9 radars and AIM-54 Phoenix long-range air-to-air missiles, and sometimes at such close ranges that their pilots selected ‘guns’. Richly illustrated by over 100 photographs and colour profiles. 118754, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 80 pages

The Yakovlev Yak-3 is considered one of the best World War 2 fighters, invariably praised by those who flew it in combat for its remarkable performance. The Germans also treated it with respect, which is perhaps best illustrated by Generalleutnant Walter Schwabedissen’s remark: The Yak-3 was a tough nut to crack for our pilots. It outperformed our machines in speed, maneuverability and rate of climb.

Supermarine Spitfire V Polish Squadrons over Dieppe Wojtek
Matusiak Robert Grudzie?
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Allied landing at Dieppe, France, on 19 August 1942. That was one of the most controversial battles of the Second World War. This book is a tribute to the 1st Polish Wing, Fighter Command’s most successful wing during the operation. Notably, they achieved this while still flying the Spitfire V variant, while some Fighter Command squadrons already had the much improved Mk IX. Several hundred of carefully selected and extensively captioned images depict Spitfires of the five Polish squadrons, as well as the men who maintained and flew them in support of the Dieppe landings.

Flying Flatiron, Gloster Javelin
Alex Crawford
The Flying Flatiron and the Harmonious Dragmaster were just two names given to the Gloster Javelin. Designed from the outset as an all-weather day and night two seat fighter, its aim was to take on the large formations of Russian bombers that everyone thought would herald the start of WWIII. This 15 ton behemoth was the first delta wing aircraft to enter RAF service. It was also the first RAF fighter to be armed with 4 de Havilland Firestreak air to air missiles, and the last aircraft to bear the Gloster name. Constant changes in the specification and design, plus cut backs in the number of prototypes built caused numerous delays. Flying in Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East, the Javelin defended the dwindling British Empire. 549388, $55 , $35.99 , Paperback, 240 pages

Arms of the Spanish Republic
A Nationalist Overview, 1938
Jose Garcia
The Captured Enemy Material Exhibition that opened at the Hotel Kursaal in San Sebastian in 1938 was the subject of several catalogues and commemorative brochures, all of them printed in short runs. An extraordinary array of the arms were on dispay, and this book showcases the wide range of armory possessed by the Republican Ejercito Popular. This impressive arsenal gathered at the Gran Kursaal was soon disbanded and the collection was handed over dismembered to different depots and arsenals. Only a small part has survived to this day, preserved at different specific military museums. 016903, $17.95 , $11.99 , Paperback, 64 pages

FROM CASEMATE
The 106th were fresh, green and right in the pathway of the 5th German Army when the Battle of the Bulge began on December 16, 1944. From this division 6,800 men were taken prisoner, but their story didn’t end there. For the ones who miraculously escaped, there was a battle to fight, and fight it they would with every ounce of strength and courage they could muster. They would fight debilitating weather conditions more reminiscent of Stalingrad than the Belgian Ardennes. They would fight a determined enemy and superior numbers and despite all adversity they would eventually prevail. This book covers the history along with the individual stories of the incredible heroism, sacrifice and tenacity of these young Americans in the face of overwhelming odds.
Blind Obedience and Denial The Nuremberg Defendants
Andrew Sangster
A revealing yet accessible examination of the Nuremberg trial, and most crucially all 23 men who stood accused, not just the most infamous—Speer, Hess, and Göring. This account sets the scene by explaining the procedures, the legal context, and the moments of hypocrisy in the Allies’ prosecution—ignoring the fact that the Katyń massacre was a Soviet crime and overlooking carpet bombing.

Initially the Luftwaffe ruled the skies, but thereafter fought an increasingly futile war of attrition which, when combined with vital strategic mistakes in aircraft production, was its death knell. Despite this, the Luftwaffe produced the most successful air aces of all time. In this painstakingly pieced together collection, the full detail behind the propaganda is once more revealed, this time in rare color photographs.

The U.S. Army Cooks’ Manual
The history of the transfer of German SAM technology to the Allies after 1945 has previously been overshadowed by the well-published transfers of the V-1 and V-2 guided missiles. This book presents the first complete history of Germany’s wartime development of surface-to-air missile (SAM) technology, how the Allies acquired this secret research towards the end of World War II in Europe and in the early postwar period, and how they then exploited this knowledge.
242774, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 240 pages
This manual prepares a cook for any eventuality whether in garrison, at camp in the field, or on the march, with instructions on everything from butchery to preserving meat and how to organize the serving of the food and clean utensils. With an introduction explaining the historical background, this is a fascinating and fun exploration of early 20th-century American army cooking, with a dash of inspiration for feeding your own army!
Argentine Perspectives on the Falklands War
Nicholas van der Bijl
The expertise of the FACs made for a unique birds-eye perspective on how the entire war in Vietnam unfolded. For Tom Yarborough, the risk was constant, intense and electrifying. In this work, the reader flies alongside Yarborough in his adrenaline-pumping chronicle of heroism, danger and wartime brotherhood. Originally published in 1990, this classic work has now been revised and updated with additional narrative and previously unpublished photos.

The War for Africa Fred Bridgland
On 9 November 1939, two unsuspecting British agents of the Special Intelligence Services walked into a trap set by German Spymaster Reinhard Heydrich. Believing that they were meeting a dissident German general for talks about helping German military opposition to bring down Hitler and end the war, they were instead taken captive in the Dutch village of Venlo and whisked away to Germany for interrogation by the Gestapo. The incident was a huge embarrassment for the Dutch government and provided the Germans with significant intelligence about SIS operations throughout Europe.
This book examines the height of the Cuban-South African fighting in Angola in 1987–88, when 3,000 South African soldiers and about 8,000 UNITA guerrilla fighters fought in alliance against the Cubans and the armed forces of the Marxist MPLA government, a force of over 50,000 men. Bridgland pieced together the course of the war, fought in one of the world’s most remote and wild terrains, by interviewing the South Africans who fought it, and many of their accounts are woven into the narrative.

In 1982, the United Kingdom and Argentina fought a war over an historical disagreement over the colonial “ownership” or rights over the Falkland Islands. Within months of the Argentinian defeat, General Edgardo Calvi, then the Argentine Head of the Army Joint Chief of Staff, was instructed to undertake a wide-ranging and formal inquiry to investigate the performance of the Argentine Army during the Falklands. The war exposed political, military, and public weaknesses in a period of considerable internal unrest. This book tells the story of the Falklands War from the Argentine Army perspective.
