THE FLAG

Reverend David Railton MC served as a chaplain on the Western Front during World War I. Attached to three divisions between 1916 and 1918, Railton supported the soldiers in their worst moments, he buried the fallen, comforted the wounded, wrote to the families of the missing and killed, and helped the survivors to remember and mark the loss of their comrades so that they were able to carry on. He was with his men at many battles, including High Wood, the Aisne and Passchendaele; he received the Military Cross for rescuing an officer and two men under heavy fire on the Somme. It was Railton’s idea to bring home the body of an unidentified fallen comrade from the battlefields to be buried in Westminster Abbey, and on Armistice Day 1920, his flag covered the coffin as the Unknown Warrior was laid to rest with full honours. Although suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, he returned to work as a parish priest in Margate, where he took particular interest in supporting ex-servicemen who had returned home to the aftermath of a terrible war and crippling unemployment.

While the story of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior has been told before, this is the first book to explore David Railton’s life and war, and of ‘the padre’s flag’ he used as an altar cloth and shroud throughout the war. The flag was consecrated a year after the burial of the Unknown Warrior and hangs in Westminster Abbey to this day. This book explains how the idea came out of Railton's traumatic experiences on the Western Front, and how he made his idea become reality, drawing on his letters and unpublished papers.

FIRST KILLS The Illustrated Biography of Fighter Pilot Władysław Gnyś By Stefan W. C. Gnyś

Illustrated biography of Władek Gnyś, first Allied pilot to score aerial kills in WWII. Polish pilot Władek Gnyś was credited with shooting down the first two German aircraft of World War II. On 2 September 1939, as Gnys' squadron took off near Kraków to intercept the German invaders, Stuka pilot Frank Neubert attacked, killing the captain. Władek, who barely survived, evaded the pursuing Stukas and made the first Allied kills, while Neubert was credited with the first aerial kill of the war. Fifty years after the invasion of Poland, Gnyś and Neubert met and shook hands, making news around the world. This highly illustrated book tells Wladek's story from his childhood, through his time flying with the Polish, French and British air forces during World War II, to his reconciliation with Neubert and his commemoration as a war hero in Poland. CHURCHILL: WARRIOR How a Military Life Guided Winston's Finest Hours By Brian Lavery

Sunday Times bestselling author writes on the unique 60-year military career of Winston Churchill. Churchill: Warrior looks at how Churchill gained his unique insight into war strategy and administration, and the effect this had on his thinking and leadership. Each period (before, during and after WW1, and in WW2) is divided into four parts – land, sea and air warfare, and combined operations. The conclusion deals with the effect of these experiences on his wartime leadership. Written in Brian Lavery's acclaimed, insightful and anecdotal style, it explores how some of Churchill's earliest innovations were to bear fruit decades later, how his uncompromising, but uniquely informed, hands-on approach, and his absolute belief in combined force in Normandy, led to a systemic victory against the odds.

WORLD WAR 2

The Battle of Ruweisat Ridge, 2 July 1942 By Major F. R. Jephson MC TD and Chris Jephson

Account of the battle at Ruweisat Ridge in North Africa, where Rommel was stopped. The second battle of El Alamein is often described as a decisive battle of World War II, yet the far less known first battle of Alamein, or Ruweisat Ridge, in July 1942, is the more pivotal of the two encounters. The author of this book, Major F. R. Jephson, argues that it saw the turning of the tide in World War II. He should know, as he was there. Had the outnumbered British defenders at Ruweisat Ridge not stopped Rommel’s Afrika Korps from continuing to its objective of Alexandria and the Suez Canal, the outcome of the campaign in Africa, and the war, could have been very different. As the seventy-fifth anniversary of the second battle of Alamein is marked, this eyewitness account seeks to bring proper recognition to the crucial contribution to the war by the defenders at the first battle of Alamein.

TEENAGE RESISTANCE FIGHTER With the Maquisards in Occupied France By Hubert Verneret and translated by Patrick Depardon

The diary of a teenage resistance fighter in occupied France during WWII. Hubert Verneret was a fourteen-year-old schoolboy in Burgundy when the Germans invaded Poland, and fifteen when France fell. A boy scout, he helped refugees, aided the gendarmerie, moved wounded soldiers, and dug out bodies after air raids. Throughout, he wrote an eloquent diary that noted his thoughts and feelings as the French troops retreated and the Germans arrived. In 1944, aged nineteen, he decided to join the local maquis resistance fighters. Though constantly in danger, the maquisards worked to upset and weaken the retreating Germans to aid the Allied advance. This first English edition of Hubert’s diary retains the original prefaces by Colonel Buckmaster, chief of the French section of the SOE, and Colonel d’Escrienne, aide de camp to General de Gaulle. POACHER WARS One Man's Fight to Save Zambia's Elephants By Al J. Venter

The compelling story of an ex-special forces soldier's battle to save Zambia's last big herd of elephants from poachers. After the Rhodesian War, Darrell Watt, hero soldier of the Rhodesian SAS and central character in A Handful of Hard Men, became the personal bodyguard to Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri. Under his protection Hariri survived and was persuaded to buy Mushi, the enormous game conservancy on the banks of the great Kafue River. After Watt's departure, Hariri was assassinated. Today, poachers have made such severe inroads into the Zambian elephant population that Darrell is left with the last big herd of about 500 elephants which he protects with his 40 game guards armed with AK 47s. In the past decade he has been fighting an anti-poacher war. Now ill, and still holding out on his own, it is time to tell his story.

VITEBSK

The city of Vitebsk in Belarus was of strategic importance during the fighting on the Eastern Front, as it controlled the route to Minsk. A salient in the German lines, Vitebsk had been declared a Festerplatz – a fortress town – meaning that it must be held at all costs – a task handed to the 3rd Panzer Army in 1943. Otto Heidkämper was chief of staff of Georg-Hans Reinhardt's 3rd Panzer Army, Army Group Center, which was stationed around Vitebsk and Smolensk from early 1942 until June 1944. His detailed account of the defence of Vitebsk through the winter of 1943 into 1944, right up to the Soviet summer offensive is a valuable first-hand account of how the operations around Vitebsk played out. Twenty maps accompany the narrative.

PANZER OPERATIONS Germany’s Panzer Group 3 During the Invasion of Russia, 1941 By Hermann Hoth and translated by Linden Lyons

Account of 3rd Panzer Group in Operation Barbarossa, written by commanding officer, Hermann Hoth. Hermann Hoth led Germany’s 3rd Panzer Group in Army Group Center—in tandem with Guderian’s 2nd Group—during the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Together, the two panzer commanders achieved a series of astounding victories, encircling entire Russian armies at Minsk, Smolensk, and Vyazma, up to the very gates of Moscow. In this work, originally published in German in 1956, Hoth discusses his exact command decisions during Barbarossa to reveal new insights into how Germany could have succeeded. Hoth sheds light on the decisive struggle between Hitler and his military advisers on the question whether, after the Dnieper and the Dvina had been reached, to adhere to the original idea of capturing Moscow. Hoth’s first-hand analysis is vital reading for every student of World War II.

HOPLITES AND HEROES CAROLYN WILLEKES

Introduction to the life and training of the citizen soldiers of the Greek city states. Thermopylae, Marathon: though fought 2,500 years ago, the names of these battles are more familiar to many than battles fought in the last half-century, but our concept of the men who fought in these battles may be more a product of Hollywood than Greece. As well as fighting among themselves, the city states came together to fight outside threats. The Persian Wars lasted nearly half a century, and saw the Greek armies come together to fend off several massive Persian forces both on land and at sea. This book sketches the change from heroic to hoplite warfare, and discusses the equipment and training of both the citizen soldiers of most Greek cities, and the professional soldiers of Sparta.

FIGHTING TO THE DEATH IN ANCIENT ROME M. C. BISHOP

Introduction to the gladiators of Ancient Rome: their weapons, fighting techniques and armour. The gladiator is one of the most enduring figures of Ancient Rome. Heroic, though of lowly status, they fought vicious duals in large arenas filled with baying crowds and could become celebrities. Few lasted more than a dozen fights, yet they were a valuable asset to their owners. But how did they fight and how did their weapons and techniques develop? Who were they? This book gives an entertaining overview of the history of the gladiator, debunking some myths along the way. SEPTEMBER 2017 • 9781612005133 • £7.99 PAPERBACK • 198 X 125 • 160 PAGES • 30 B/W ILLUS.

Knights

CHIVALRY AND VIOLENCE JOHN SADLER AND ROSIE SERDIVILLE

Introduction to the world of the medieval knight, from training to tournaments. Originally warriors mounted on horseback, knights became associated with the concept of chivalry as it was popularised in medieval European literature.Knights were expected to fight bravely and honourably and be loyal to their lord until death if necessary. The Crusades were instrumental in the development of the code of chivalry, and some crusading orders of knighthood, such as the Knights Templar, have become legend. In the 15th century knights became obsolete due to advances in warfare, but the title of ‘knight’ has survived as an honorary title, and knights remain a strong concept in popular culture. This short history covers the rise and decline of the medieval knights, including the extensive training, specific arms and armour, tournaments and the important concept of chivalry. VIKINGS

RAIDERS FROM THE SEA KIM HJARDAR

Introduction to Vikings, their way of life, and why their raids were so successful. From the 9th to the 11th century, Viking ships landed on almost every shore in the Western world. Wherever they roamed, enormous suffering followed in their wake, but the encounter between cultures changed both European and Nordic societies. Employing sail technology and unpredictable strategies, the Vikings could strike suddenly, attack with great force, then withdraw with stolen goods or captives. Viking society was highly militarised, honour was everything and losing reputation was worse than death. This short history of the Vikings discusses their ships, weapons and armour, and unique way of life. SEPTEMBER 2017 • 9781612005195 • £7.99 PAPERBACK • 198 X 125 • 160 PAGES • 30 B/W ILLUS.

THE

ARDENNES BATTLEFIELDS DECEMBER 1944–JANUARY 1945

December 1944–January 1945 By Leo Marriott and Simon Forty

Provides unique, highly illustrated perspective on the Battle of the Bulge using mixture of media.

Just after its 70th anniversary, the Battle of the Bulge has lost none of its impact. The largest battle fought by US troops in Europe started in a surprise attack on December 16, 1944, by four German armies, spearheaded by the cream of the German Panzer forces. Under the cover of bad weather and heavy snow, Hitler’s last roll of the dice was intended to retake Antwerp, split the Allies, divide their political leadership, and force peace in the West, thus allowing the German forces to concentrate on defeating the Red Army. Near-complete surprise was achieved as the Germans attacked where least expected – the forested Ardennes – a weakly defended section of the Allied line, taking advantage of the weather conditions. Leo Marriott & Simon Forty The Allied response was magnificent. Initial reverses brought out the best of Eisenhower’s armies, which fought with determination and grit. Within ten days the German attack had been nullified. Patton wheeled WORLD WAR 2 his Third Army round in a brilliant maneuver that relieved Bastogne and set up a counterattack which would drive the Germans back behind the Rhine. 7 LEADERSHIP LESSONS OF D-DAY

This book is about seven men who led American soldiers in Normandy and what we can learn from the leadership they so ably demonstrated. Some, like Eisenhower, Theodore Roosevelt Jr, and Lieutenant Dick Winters, are well known while others are barely a footnote in the history books. All made a dramatic difference during Operation Overlord. Leadership was the only ingredient that would get them through the storm of death surrounding them and their men. This book is not a full history of D-Day, but it is, however, a primer on how you can lead today, no matter what your occupation or role in life, by learning from the leadership of these seven. This book provides the reader with a means to define leadership by telling seven dramatic, immersive and memorable stories that the reader will never forget. AUTUMN 2017

A World War II Airman's Story By Daniel Culler and Rob Morris

Story of US airman who was imprisoned and tortured in a Swiss camp during WWII. During World War II, 1,517 members of US aircrews were forced to seek asylum in Switzerland. Most neutral countries found reason to release US airmen from internment, but Switzerland took its obligations under the Hague Convention more seriously than most. Airman who tried to escape were transferred to camps incarcerating Swiss criminals. The worst of these camps was Wauwilermoos. To this hellhole came Dan Culler, author of this incredible account of suffering and survival. Not only did the prisoners sleep on lice-infested straw, malnourished and with virtually no hygiene facilities or access to medical care but worse, the commandant of Wauwilermoos was a die-hard Swiss Nazi. Despite horrific attacks but other inmates, Dan Culler’s courage and determination kept him alive. Rob Morris’s introduction and notes provide historical background and context. The full story of Frantic 7, the only daytime air drop providing assistance to the Polish during the Warsaw Uprising. The Frantic operations were conceived in late 1943, as access to Soviet airfields allowed Allied bombers to undertake missions across occupied Europe. In addition to hitting Nazi war industries, the political objectives of Frantic were to build closer cooperation with the Red Army. For the first two weeks of the Warsaw Uprising, Soviet forces stood outside the city, and Stalin refused to let the RAF land at Soviet bases after dropping supplies to Polish freedom fighters. Eventually, the USA persuaded him to let them use Frantic to supply the Polish. This book gives a full narrative of Frantic 7, using first-hand accounts of those on the ground. It explains how the diplomatic wrangling set the stage for the breakdown in relations between the Soviet Union and the US. Hitler's first Defeat on the Eastern Front By Alf R. Jacobsen

Dramatic new account of the bloody fighting along the Litza Front in WWII as the Germans attempted to capture the strategically important city of Murmansk. In summer 1941 German rock hunters under the command of General Eduard Dietl set out in northern Norway up through Finland to the Russian border. Operation Silberfuchs was underway. This section of the Eastern Front would ensure Hitler nickel supplies from Finnish mines, and bring the strategically important port city of Murmansk under German control. Despite warnings of an attack, Stalin failed to mobilise, and the British hesitated to come to the rescue of the Red Army. But as weather conditions worsened, Russian resistance increased. With firsthand accounts of the heavy fighting that would lead to Hitler's first defeat on the Eastern Front, this is a dramatic account of a forgotten but bloody episode of World War II. IN THE SHADOWS OF VICTORY II America’s Forgotten Military Leaders, The Spanish-American War to World War II By Thomas D. Phillips

The forgotten military leaders of America are given the attention they deserve. American history has enshrined an exceptional few military leaders in the public’s collective consciousness while sometimes ignoring others often equally as deserving, relegating them to footnotes. This book is about those who have been overlooked; military leaders whose accomplishments have been too little acknowledged and too seldom celebrated. It covers leaders “in the shadows” during the four major conflicts the United States engaged in from the late 19th century to the mid-20th: the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, World War I, and World War II.

FIRST TO FIGHT The U.S. Marines in World War I By Oscar E. Gilbert and Romain Cansière

An account of how the Marine Corps were the first Americans to fight in WWI and how they became an elite fighting force.

FIRST to FIGHT The U.S. Marines in World War I

OSCAR E. GILBERT AND ROMAIN CANSIERE

The Marines went to war as part of the American Expeditionary Force, bitterly resented by the Army and General Pershing. The Army tried to use them solely as labor troops and replacements, but the German spring offensive of 1918 forced the issue. This book looks at all the operations of the Marine Corps in World War I, and considers the units that supported the Marine Brigade. It will examine how, during the war years, the Marine Corps changed from a small organization of naval security detachments to an elite land combat force.

THE BLUE AND GRAY ALMANAC The Civil War in Facts and Figures, Recipes and Slang By Albert Nofi

Fascinating anthology about the American Civil War, throwing new light on all aspects of the war. The great national epic in American history is not, as in many countries, the War for Independence, but rather the Civil War. The Civil War was about the nation’s people living and dying as they struggled over the meaning, promise, and nature of America, and whether, in the words of Lincoln, it could endure “half slave and half free.” Historian Albert Nofi shares his fascination with the Civil War through this work. His text weaves in contemporary poems and songs, anecdotes and facts, quotes and recipes to throw light on many aspects of the war, from its origins through its battles to the experience of both soldiers and civilians, to how it affected America, from then down to the present.

On September 15, 1944, U.S. Marines landed on a small island in the Central Pacific called Peleliu, as a prelude to the liberation of the Philippines. Among the first wave to hit the beach that day was Forward Observer George Peto. A few days later he would spend his 22nd birthday fighting the Japanese. Growing up in rural Ohio, George had always preferred exploring to being indoors. As a teenager he got into regular brawls, and found holding down a job hard because of his wanderlust. He decided that joining the Marines offered him the opportunity for adventure (plus three square meals a day), so he and his brother joined the Corps in 1941, just a few months before Pearl Harbor. This is the remarkable story of an "Old Breed" Marine told in his own words. August 2017 • 9781612005270 • £25.00 Hardback • 229 x 152 368 pages • 30 illus.

FIELD MARSHAL The Life and Death of Erwin Rommel By Daniel Allen Butler

A biography of one of the most well-respected military leaders of the twentieth century, Erwin Rommel.

WORLD WAR 2

Erwin Rommel was a complex man: a born leader, brilliant soldier, a devoted husband and proud father; intelligent, instinctive, brave, compassionate, vain, egotistical, and arrogant. Above all, he was the quintessential German patriot, who ultimately would refuse to abandon his moral compass, so that on one pivotal day in June 1944 he came to understand that he had mistakenly served an evil man and evil cause. In Field Marshal historian Daniel Allen Butler not only describes the swirling, innovative campaigns in which Rommel won his military reputation, but assesses the temper of the man who in the final reckoning fought only for his country.

PAST ESEN

The Past & Present Series reconstructs historical battles by using photography, juxtaposing modern views with those of the past together with concise explanatory text. 1ST AIRBORNE Market Garden 1944 By Simon Forty and Tom Timmermans

Photographs reconstruct the fighting during Operation Market Garden involving the 1st Airborne Division. In September 1944 1st Airborne played a leading role in Operation Market – the air component of Operation Market Garden, an audacious attempt by the Allies to bypass the Siegfried Line and advance into the Ruhr. Encountering more resistance than expected, the division landed too far from Arnhem bridge, and fought bravely but in vain. Held up en route, particularly at Nijmegen, XXX Corps’ advance to Arnhem ran late. After nine days of fighting, 1st Airborne had lost 8,000 men when the survivors retreated across the Lower Rhine to safety. However, they had created a legend: first as the small unit under Lt-Col John Frost held the “bridge too far” and then as the Oosterbeek perimeter came under sustained attack waiting for XXX Corps to arrive.

LEIBSTANDARTE Ardennes 1944 By Steven Smith

Photographs old and new reconstruct the battles of 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte in 1944. The 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler was the spearhead of the assault by Sepp Dietrich’s Sixth Panzer Armee on the northern flank of the German Ardennes offensive. The attack was launched on a snowy, freezing December 16, but from the outset, the division lost time against schedule. The winding roads proved difficult and soon the Kampfgruppe was strung out over 25 kilometres with its heavy armour slowly losing ground as vehicle after vehicle succumbed to automotive failures. Lack of fuel and US Army action eventually forced it to halt at La Gleize.Six days later, on Christmas Eve, with no hope and no fuel, Peiper and his men abandoned their vehicles and made their way back to their lines: only 770 got there.

Normandy 1944 By Steven Smith

Photographs old and new reconstruct the intense action in Normandy involving the 82nd Airborne division. On August 15, 1942, the 82nd Airborne became the US Army’s first airborne division. They trained exhaustively for their new role, which involved parachuting from C-47s and insertion by Waco CG-4A gliders. They were dropped onto the Cotentin peninsula on the night of June 5–6 1944, in a mission codenamed Boston. Widely dispersed on landing, the division overcame its problems and strong German defenses to take the important town of Ste-Mère-Église. Intense action along the Merderet River ensured that the Utah beachhead wasn’t compromised, and subsequently the division fought on, losing 5,245 troopers killed, wounded, or missing. When withdrawn after 33 days, the division could be satisfied it had performed heroically and helped establish the Allied foothold in France.

THE FALAISE GAP BATTLES Normandy 1944 By Simon Forty and Leo Marriott

Photographs old and new reconstruct the fierce fighting around Falaise and Chambois in 1944. The denouement of the battle of Normandy, the fighting around Falaise and Chambois in August 1944 and the pursuit of the retreating German armies to the Seine provided the Allies with an immense victory. After ten weeks of hard attritional fighting, the Allies had broken loose from the bocage and the Germans’ deep defences around Caen: by the end of September they would be close to the German border. As US First Army and British Second Army squeezed the western and northern edges of the German salient, so Third Army rushed headlong eastwards and then north to create the lower of two pincers. When the dust settled, between 80,000 and 100,000 troops had been trapped by the Allied encirclement.

101ST AIRBORNE

IN NORMANDY

WORLD WAR 2

101st Airborne Division was activated in August 1942 in Louisiana. On D-Day, 101st and 82nd Airborne dropped onto the Cotentin peninsula hours before the landings, tasked with capturing bridges and positions, taking out German strongpoints, and securing the exits from Utah and Omaha Beaches. +44 (0)1865 241249

The Das Reich Division was the most infamous unit of the Waffen-SS. The Waffen-SS was founded in 1934 as the SS-Verfügungstruppe. In 1939 the SS-Verfügungstruppe was placed under the operational command of the OKH. During the invasion of Poland the unit fought as a mobile infantry regiment. In 1940 the SS-VerfügungsDivision participated in the invasion of the Netherlands and France, before fighting in Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. In 1944, the unit was stationed in southern France when the Allies landed in Normandy. The following days saw the division commit atrocities, hanging 100 local men in the town of Tulles in reprisal for German losses, and massacring 642 French civilians in Oradoursur-Glane, allegedly in retaliation for partisan activity in the area. Das Reich was later encircled in the Roncey pocket, losing most of their armoured equipment. Das Reich surrendered in May 1945. This is an autobiographical account of a career in conservation and of an abiding love affair with Spirit of the Wilderness, a Piper Super Cub, twoseater, light aircraft. There are hair-raising episodes and some serious mishaps at the wheel of Spirit of the Wilderness, and on the ground, the author records what he was privileged to learn from the knowledge, experience and wisdom of indigenous game guards and local communities in South Africa and Mozambique.

KRUGER'S WAR The Truth behind the Myths of the Boer War By Chris Ash

A revisionist account of the Boers depiction in modern propaganda, arguing that they were as much of a menace as the British. In October 1899, tens of thousands of Boer horsemen poured over their borders, sparking the Boer War by invading the British Southern African territories. The long hoped for, and openly stated, aim was to drive the British from Southern Africa. Overwhelming the colonial garrisons, the invaders pushed forwards, annexing the land they grabbed, looting villages and farms, renaming towns and introducing their racist laws. Over a century of propaganda – first by Afrikaner nationalists, then by the Apartheid regime and now even by the ANC government – Kruger’s republic has been painted as the innocent victim of British aggression, desperate only to preserve their independence.

CANADIAN MILITARY HISTORY

Camp Borden: A Century of Service is an overview of the history of this iconic institution. Over ten decades Borden has been a temporary posting, as either instructor or trainee, for countless thousands of military men and women who have served Canada in peace and war. For generations it has been a home to military families. And for a century it has been a part of the local community fabric of Ontario. This book, in a small way, pays tribute to Camp Borden as a unique part of Canada’s history and heritage. It is not the complete story of Camp Borden, but hopefully it will inspire the reader to dig deeper into the layered history of a Canadian military treasure. THE BATTLES BEFORE Case Studies of Australian Army Leadership after the Vietnam War Edited by David Connery

An examination of how senior leaders prepare an army for war in peace time. Much of Australia’s military history literature focuses on battles and the way generals plan and prosecute an action or campaign. But what do generals do when they are not fighting battles? The Battles Before examines the role of senior leaders in preparing an army for war — fighting bureaucratic battles, mobilising forces for operations, or preparing for a future that is impossible to anticipate. The five cases examined in this book focus on strategic leadership and describe how major organisations grapple with political, strategic, economic and cultural change over time. MODERN WARFARE

The Normandy Landings of 6 June 1944 were a major and decisive episode of the Second World, the object of countless books, films, investigations, reports and television series. However, is it known that D-Day was preceded by, on 27 April 1944, a tragic rehearsal that resulted in over nine-hundred deaths and which remained a secret for decades? Jean-Charles Stasi has worked as a journalist since 1985 and is the author of twenty books, most of which deal with the Second World War.

RATELS ON THE LOMBA The Story of Charlie Squadron By Leopold Scholtz

The story of the SADF's Charlie Squadron as they fought at the Lomba River in Southern Angola. Charlie Squadron – the iron fist of the South African Defense Force’s 61 Mechanised Battalion Group – led the way on 3 October 1987 during the climactic battle on the Lomba River in Southern Angola. They had to deal with a terrain so dense that both their movement and sight were severely impaired. Here, the reader is taken to the heart of the action in a dramatic recreation based on interviews, diary entries and Facebook contributions by members of Charlie Squadron. It is an intensely human story of how individuals react in the face of death.

The raw, personal experiences of a wideeyed South African conscript who fought in Angola and Namibia in the 1980s. A young South African conscript relates his small share of the war in Angola and Namibia in the 1980s. This is not the usual military history, written by a commander armed with facts, nor a researched story of a war or campaign. It is a personal experience. GERHARD FIESELER The Man Behind the Storch By Nigel Holden

The story of the famous slow-speed aircraft manufactured by Nazi Germany. The Fieseler Storch is the most famous slow-speed aircraft of the Second World War. A remarkably versatile reconnaissance plane, as well as a Nazi showpiece and diplomatic gift – and even, in post-war British hands, a tool in helicopter design – it was linked to some of the best-known personages of the conflict: Hitler, Speer, Rommel, Mussolini, Churchill and Stalin. Furthermore, as Holden suggests in this first complete biography in English of its creator Gerhard Fieseler, no other plane had a comparably equivalent role in that war. Making use of Fieseler’s autobiography and other material never reproduced in English, Holden chronicles Fieseler's life. He emerges as an audacious fighter pilot, an heroic aerobatics pilot, an inspiring industrial leader, a Nazi opportunist, and an obstreperous old man who, to the end, blamed Hitler – and largely only Hitler – for provoking the Second World War.

FORGOTTEN HEROES Aces of the Royal Hungarian Air Force in the Second World War By Csaba B. Stenge

An account of the 38 Hungarian air aces of the Second World War. Prior to the beginning of the Second World War, the Royal Hungarian Armed Forces – including the Air Force – prepared to engage the Little Entente forces; however, during the war, their opponents became the Soviet and American aviators. The Hungarian aces fought gallantly against heavy odds and, after the war’s end, the Hungarian communist regime turned against them as well. This book is the unique story of the 38 Hungarian air aces of WWII. The overwhelming majority of related materials have been lost or destroyed, so the author has demonstrated truly Herculean efforts during his 23-year-long research to write this monumental work. The book is based mostly on previously unpublished primary archival sources and also on the preserved documents of the aces and their families.

HOT SKIES OVER YEMEN Volume 1: Aerial Warfare over the Southern Arabian Peninsula, 1962-1994 By Tom Cooper

Chronicles the understudied aerial conflicts over Yemen between 1962 and 1994. Since September 1962, hardly a week passed without a major armed confrontation or an outright war in Yemen. Although these conflicts may have caused as many as half a million deaths, the rest of the World has heard very little about them. Using newly released secret intelligence sources, neglected memoirs, and popular memory, this book tells the story of military flying in Yemen between 1962 and 1994. It provides in-depth analysis of campaigns fought by the Egyptian air force in the 1960s, the creation of two Yemeni air forces in the 1970s, and an entire series of inter-Yemeni wars of the 1980s and 1990s. Containing over 140 photographs, colour profiles, maps and extensive tables, Hot Skies over Yemen is a richly illustrated and unique point of reference about a segment of modern aerial warfare that has remained almost entirely unknown.

Brazilian Aviation in the Second World War By Santiago Rivas

A study of the Brazilian role in the Second World War. When the Second World War erupted, Latin America – despite being initially neutral – became part of it. Brazil, with its large provision of goods to the Allied Powers, was soon a victim of the Axis submarines – leading to the urgent development of an anti-submarine aviation. As it was developed, they also sent a fighter squadron and an observation unit to the Mediterranean Front – taking part in the operations on Northern Italy and supporting the Brazilian ground forces, as well as other Allied units, until the end of the war. This book covers the story of both the operations along the Brazilian coasts and on Italy.

A look at the technological advances which accompanied aerial warfare in WWI. Volume 3 of Gott Strafe England will look into operations on both sides to show that with every new development, there came a further development to counter it. The theory that the pace of human ingenuity is greatest during wartime is proven in this book, as a variety of newly-developed weapons – some truly impractical – will be evaluated. CIVIL WAR LONDON A Military History of London under Charles I and Oliver Cromwell By David Flintham

A history of London during the English Civil Wars, including a guide to sites today. London was the critical location throughout the English Civil Wars – a fact that has been emphasised by countless historians, with some going as far to say that by fleeing his capital in January 1642, King Charles I lost the war several months before the fighting actually started. Most studies focus on London as the political and economic powerhouse – overlooking the fact that militarily, London was just as important; it is 'London: the militarised city' which is the focus of this new history. Written by an acknowledged expert on London’s Civil War defences, this is both the first military history of London during the 1640s and 1650s, and an accessible general introduction to London during the time of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell.

A NEW WAY OF FIGHTING Professionalism in the English Civil War Proceedings of the 2016 Helion & Company 'Century of the Soldier' Conference Edited by Serena Jones

Essays written by the speakers at the 2016 English Civil War Conference. The speakers at Helion & Company’s second annual English Civil War Conference examined a broad range of subjects relating to the increasing professionalisation of military bodies throughout the 17th century. War quickens the pace of military and technological change, and the increasing pace and scope of European warfare during the 16th and 17th centuries prepared the ground for the professional forces we are familiar with today. Topics include Peter Leadbetter looking to the early part of the century to examine the pre-Civil War county-trained bands and if (or how) they participated in the Civil Wars. Simon Marsh examines the career of James Wemyss and demonstrates how his experiments in artillery technology extended further than creating the leather guns for which he is best known.

RECOLLECTIONS FROM THE RANKS Three Russian Soldiers’ Autobiographies from the Napoleonic Wars By Darrin Boland

Three accounts of Napoleon's Wars from 1812-1815 previously unavailable in the English language. From Napoleon’s invasion of 1812 to the Wars of Liberation and beyond, seen from the common Russian soldier’s perspective. This volume is composed of three accounts previously unavailable in English. Detailed annotations illuminate a seldom understood army and nation during one of the pivotal episodes in European history. Pamfil Nazarov was a peasant from Tver who was conscripted in 1812 but rather than head east to join the army in its campaign against Napoleon, he travelled to St. Petersburg and was selected for the Russian Imperial Guard. The second in a three volume series on Napoleon's campaigns in Europe during 1813. This work is the second in a three-volume series on the 1813 campaign; it is the first significant study on the 1813 campaign since Petre. Unlike the other English works on the campaign, it was prepared using French archival and published sources, as well as German, Danish and Russian published sources. It discusses every battle and significant action in all parts of Germany – including various sieges. Detailed colour maps support the major battles and a large collection of orders of battle drawn from the French Archives, as well as period-published documents, support the discussion of the campaign, complemented by a large selection of images. Both images and maps are new to this edition of the work.

The History of the Royal Tank Regiment, 1976-2017 By Charles Messenger

The history of the Royal Tank Regiment, from 1976 to 2017. The Royal Tank Regiment celebrates its centenary this year (2017). This, the fourth volume of the Regiment’s history, begins in the midst of the Cold War, with the four RTR regiments mainly based in Germany. They experienced NATO’s rearmament in the early 1980s and the implementation of General Sir Nigel Bagnall’s revolutionary new concept for the defence of the NATO Central Region. This History not only covers the Regiment’s numerous operational tours. It details the vehicles it has used and provides an idea of how life in the RTR has changed over the past forty years. It does not duck controversy and allows the voices of all ranks to be heard. The Tanks reflects an ever changing British Army, the one constant being the character of the RTR soldier, the Tankie.

BY FIRE AND BAYONET Grey's West Indies Campaign of 1794 By Steve Brown

This book covers Sir Charles Grey's glorious (but ultimately ill-fated) West Indies campaign in the early years of the Napoleonic period.

NAPOLEONIC WARS

Sir Charles Grey was one of the most aggressive British generals of his era – something his gentlemanly appearance and demeanour did not immediately indicate. Ever cheerful and optimistic – and humane and loyal to his friends – his ability to deliver needle-sharp assaults and then harry a defeated enemy (the latter being something at which British generals of the Napoleonic era were distinctly mediocre) makes him one of the more interesting personalities of the early portion of the 'Great War with France'. THE FRENCH ARMY OF THE ORIENT 1798-1801 Napoleon's beloved 'Egyptians' By Yves Martin

The uniforms, organisation and equipment of Napoleon’s French army in Egypt. More than 200 years ago – under the inspiration and leadership of Bonaparte – a revolutionary French Army invaded Egypt, then part of the Ottoman Empire; this presence lasted beyond Bonaparte’s own departure and subsequent rise to power as First Consul. It ended with another invasion – this time by the British – and the repatriation in France of what was left of the 'Army of the Orient'. This book aims at providing a renewed and updated image of the French soldier, as told by the surviving archives, memoirs and rare contemporary iconography. NAPOLEONIC WARS

OLMÜTZ TO TORGAU Horace St Paul and the Campaigns of the Austrian Army in the Seven Years War 1758-60 By Neil Cogswell

An extremely detailed history of the Austrian army in the second half of the Seven Years War. Following the disastrous conclusion to the campaign of 1757, the Austrian Army regrouped in Bohemia. Meanwhile, the King of Prussia sought to complete his reconquest of Silesia before thrusting directly towards Vienna. Throughout the campaign, Horace St Paul – an English gentleman volunteer – continued to accompany Marshal Daun. He noted the progress of the army and recorded the essential connective tissue which links the great events of these campaigns. The text is accompanied by 242 plates of maps and statistical information. From Reason to Revolution

The Battle of Prestonpans 1745 By Arran Johnston

A study of Britain's best-documented but least studied battle, Prestonpans 1745, fought during the Jacobite Rebellion. In the summer of 1745, a charismatic (but inexperienced) young Prince sailed to Scotland – determined to wrest the crowns of Great Britain from George II. In a few short weeks, he raised an army large enough to challenge the government’s forces in Scotland and, against the odds, stormed to a shocking victory over them at the Battle of Prestonpans. This is a study of the battle – seen from within the landscape and communities around which it was fought. No longer should the two days of events which make up the Battle of Prestonpans be viewed simply as the prologue to a future defeat; instead, they are presented as they were understood at the time: as the climax of a month-long campaign which, it seemed, would determine the fate of Scotland.

I WILL NOT SURRENDER THE HAIR OF A HORSE'S TAIL' The Victorio Campaign 1879 By Dr Rober N. Watt

A major new account of the Victorio Campaign of 1879-1881, the most intensive confrontation between Apaches and the USA since the early 1860s. In the early 1870s, a mixture of diplomacy and military campaigning by General George Crook led to the formation of several reservations for various Apache groups. Almost before the ink was dry on these treaties, an effort was made to place the Apaches upon one reservation (the concentration policy). Between 1877 and 1879, Victorio and his followers resisted their removal back to San Carlos – periodically fleeing and raiding mainly in Mexico to survive; they minimised hostile activity in the USA in order to keep alive their hopes of a return to Ojo Caliente. This research will outline the sophisticated strategies and tactics utilised by Victorio, Nana and their followers to defeat every opponent sent against them.

CRUCIBLE OF THE JACOBITE ‘15 The Battle of Sheriffmuir 1715 By Jonathan Oates

Covers the campaign of 1715-1716 in Scotland, including the battle of Sheriffmuir. Just over three centuries ago, there was a major battle in Scotland that was to decide the fate of the newly established – and bitterly contested – union of England and Scotland. On one hand there was a numerically superior army, trained and armed but officered by men of varying experience. Facing them was a small, but better experienced and officered British Army. Both armies; one entirely Scottish and the other a mixture of Scots, English and Irish were led by Scottish noblemen. Victory to either side meant control of the gateway from the Highlands to the Lowlands and then England, where the political prize awaited. Century of the Soldier

'A RABBLE OF GENTILITY' The Royalist Northern Horse, 1644-45 By John Barratt

The story of the Royalist Northern Horse and its campaigns in 1644-45. General George Monck once described the Royalist horse as “a rabble of gentility”. Modern research has largely dispelled this image of the King's cavalry. However the description seems at first sight appropriate to the body of cavalry known as the “Northern Horse”. Extensively illustrated, including specially commissioned artwork and maps, 'Rabble of Gentility' will be welcomed by readers interested in the history of the British Civil Wars, living history enthusiasts, wargamers and model makers, and those interested in the history of Northern England in the 17th century. Myngs, Narbrough and Shovell By Dr Simon Harris

The fascinating tale of three Norfolk admirals: Myngs, John Narbrough, and Cloudesley Shovell. The careers of the three Norfolk admirals were intimately related. Narbrough and Shovell came from the small North Norfolk hamlet of Cockthorpe and Myngs from nearby Salthouse. In the 1660s, Myngs was the captain, Narbrough the lieutenant and Shovell the lowly cabin boy in the same ship. It is also possible that they were all related at least by marriage. In the majority of the naval wars of the second half of the seventeenth and the early eighteenth centuries one or other of them was invariably present. The three men’s careers are detailed here to show that it wasn’t just Nelson who was gifted with such extraordinary talents from this area of the country.

THE SIEGE OF LUCKNOW 1857 Victorian Warfare in Defeat and Victory By Dr Edward Gosling

The Siege of Lucknow, during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58, seen from a military and civilian perspective. The Victorian age saw the expansion and unparalleled success of the British Empire. For the British Army, however, defending and controlling such a vast domain was a challenge. The long nineteenth century saw Britain’s military strength repeatedly tested, and although many victories were achieved, the road was tumultuous. The Siege of Lucknow, central to the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58, stands as a stark example of one of the key instances in which the British Army found itself on the back foot, facing swift, bloody and near defeat at the hands the native troops of India. This study presents an examination of this remarkable period of British military history from both a military and civilian perspective, building on existing scholarship on the Siege of Lucknow and drawing on original research to shed new light on warfare in the Victorian Age.

In our first book, we explored the impact of the fighting on the landscape of the Western Front – showing how the physical effects of war have left indelible traces; in this book, we follow the same theme, but from a different perspective. The Gallipoli campaign was planned in early 1915 – an imaginative, but flawed attempt to overcome the stalemate in France and Flanders. This book draws on a remarkable collection of original unpublished First World War letters, diaries and photographs, and also provides a glimpse of Eton, the Crown and the splendour of the Raj. Esmond Elliot was born in 1895. His father, the Fourth Earl of Minto, was Governor General of Canada and Viceroy of India at the turn of the Century. His mother, Mary Minto, was a woman of beauty, intelligence and great wit.

THE BATTLE OF THE SELLE Fourth Army Operations on the Western Front in the Hundred Days, 9-24 October 1918 By Peter Hodgkinson

This book considers Fourth Army’s operations at the River Selle between 9-24 October 1918. This book considers a relatively unknown series of actions of the victorious Hundred Days of 1918: the operations at the River Selle. The book gives a detailed account of the fighting and the infantry tactics deployed, and analyses why Fourth Army’s ‘weapons system’ struggled to be effective. It also examines the nature of ‘semi-mobile’ warfare in the Hundred Days and assesses the limitations of the British ability to pursue this. The idea that the BEF had an invincible formula – repeatedly deployed – that ensured success is challenged; similarly, the nature of the German resistance is subject to analysis. The book further examines Fourth Army’s planning process and the efforts of the Royal Engineers and the logistics system, without which no victory would have been possible.

FUTILE EXERCISE? The British Army's Preparations for War 1902-1914 By Simon Batten

Examines the exercises and manoeuvres conducted by the British Army in the years leading up to the First World War. According to the official historian Brigadier-General James Edmonds: ‘In every respect the Expeditionary Force of 1914 was incomparably the best trained, best organized, and best equipped British Army which ever went forth to war’. There has been considerable debate over the extent to which Edmonds’ claim was justified, and to which the British Army had learnt the lessons of recent events (above all, its chastening experiences in South Africa). This book looks at how the training and manoeuvures undertaken by the BEF between the Boer War and the First World War prepared them for the horrors of the Western Front. WORLD WAR 1

COURAGE WITHOUT GLORY The British Army on the Western Front 1915 Edited by Spencer Jones

The experience of the British Army during 1915 through a series of thematic essays. The year 1915 was one of unprecedented challenges for the British Army. Short of manpower, firepower and experience, the army needed time to adapt before it could hope to overcome the formidable German defences of the Western Front. Yet the demands of coalition warfare required immediate, repeated action. The result was a year of disappointments, setbacks and costly fighting. The difficulties of 1915 make it especially worthy of study. This book offers a fresh, insightful evaluation of the experience of the British Army through a series of thematic essays examining the strategic, operational, tactical and logistical problems that shaped the fighting. Explores the genesis of plastic surgery developed by Harold Gillies during the First World War. Faces from the Front examines the British response to the huge number of soldiers who incurred facial injuries during the First World War. These injuries were produced within a short time span, but (for the first time in a major conflict) did not necessarily lead to death due to developments in anaesthesia and improvements in the treatment of infection and blood loss. Drawing on a unique collection of personal and family accounts of the post-war lives of patients treated at Sidcup, the author explores surgical and aesthetic outcomes and the emotional impact of facial reconstruction.

This is the first book dedicated to the subject of the 8th (Service) Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment during the First World War. There is a rich mine of information to be found – including the methods of recruitment; the initial training (or lack of it); the lack and late arrival of equipment; and the actual fighting experience of the 8th Lincolns at Loos. Importantly, this volume challenges the well-established British historiography about the general reserves and their performance at Loos, with the author arguing that the reserves, rather than being routed, stood, fought and died at Loos in 1915.

JACK AND HOPIT, COMRADES IN ARMS An Officer of the 9th Lancers in the Great War and his War Horse By Serena Merton

The story of Second Lieutenant Colvin and his charger Hopit who spent four arduous years together under the most challenging conditions imaginable. A chance discovery of the existence of the gravestone carved with the battle honours of Hopit – the Tipperaryfoaled hunter – led the author to research the Great War relationship of Hopit and 19-year-old Second Lieutenant John (Jack) Forrester Colvin in their four long years on the Western Front. Extensive family photograph albums bring a personal element to the story of this long partnership, while the war diaries of the 9th Lancers and letters from individual soldiers tell the wartime story.

STEPBROTHERS IN ARMS Replacements in the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front 1918 By Tim Lynch

How a professional army adapted to accommodate its wartime citizen soldier colleagues and the creation of ‘trench households’ in the front lines. By 1918, the British Expeditionary Force had become a complex mixture of Regular, Territorial, New Army and conscript soldiers, each with their own culture of attitudes and beliefs about their particular identity and about the task before them. This book explores what the concept of the regimental family meant for soldiers on the Western Front and examines how, in the wake of enormous losses a disparate group of volunteers and conscripts became an effective fighting force. The Neglected Campaign By William F. Stewart

Examines the Canadian experience on the Somme 1916, focussing on how they fought and why they battled in the manner they did.

WORLD WAR 1

This perspective contributes to the absence of detailed operational studies devoted to Canada’s military contribution to the Somme campaign. Resulting in 24,029 casualties, the Somme was the second longest and costliest campaign of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. It represents a critical inflection point in the Dominion’s conduct of the war as all spheres of its military effort were impacted by its effects. The corps, however, demonstrated sufficient potential that General Sir Douglas Haig assigned the Canadian Corps the crucial role of seizing Vimy Ridge during the next major British offensive. Highly illustrated.

A SEEKER AFTER TRUTHS The Life and Times of G. A. Studdert Kennedy ('Woodbine Willie') 1883-1929 By Linda Parker

The famous army chaplain's life and achievements are examined in the context of Britain in the first half of the 20th century.

WORLD WAR 1

Earning the nickname ‘Woodbine Willie’ because of his habit of giving out both cigarettes and bibles to the men at the front, Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy believed that the place of the army chaplain in battle was near the action with his troops, and earned a Military Cross for bravery at the Battle of Messines. It was during the war that he began writing the prose and poetry that were to make him famous. This book accesses previously unused material to examine his life in all its aspects, looking at his significance and assessing his impact on church life, industry and society before his early death in 1929.

FAITH IN CONFLICT The Impact of the Great War on the Faith of the People of Britain By Stuart Bell

Explores how the Great War affected the religious faith of British soldiers and civilians. Stuart Bell examines a wide range of published and archival sources to explore how the war affected the beliefs of the churchgoers of wartime Britain. The author shows how the language of chivalry and martyrdom was used to express both the country’s confidence in the righteousness of the cause and the belief that those who died in what was a Holy War were assured of eternal salvation. The memoirs of five soldiers – representative of a wide spectrum of faith – are also examined; finally, he explores the reasons for the very limited influence of the war on religious practice. BATTALIONS AT WAR The York & Lancaster Regiment in the First World War By John Dillon

Covers the major battles of the war through the experiences of the battalions of the York and Lancaster Regiment.

WORLD WAR 1

The York and Lancaster Regiment had one or more battalion in all of the major battles of the First World War, but each saw only a small part of those operations. This book uses the war diaries of those battalions to trace the history of the conflict through the limited perspective of those whose horizon was little more than their 500 yards of trench line. Private Patrick Dillon (the author’s grandfather) served in three battalions of the regiment. The battalion war diaries show us how limited was the overview of the ordinary soldier and his regimental officers, there is little context to the actions in which they were involved beyond their immediate front and flanks.

Through scrutiny of Jones’ post-war literature (especially his war memoirs, entitled Most Secret War; his archival papers – as well as those of his colleagues and contemporaries), this ground-breaking book constitutes a critique of the genesis of scientific and technical intelligence. DEFENDING ISLAND BRITAIN IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR Documentary Sources By David Rogers Technological advances in the early 20th century changed the way warfare was conducted. With the advent of flight, and later rocket-powered armaments, no longer did one need to travel over sea to attack enemies. Furthermore, the development of submarines ensured that island nations could be cut off from supplies more easily. The UK’s close proximity to Europe and the unfolding scale of conflict also brought challenges of its own. This book examines the path taken to defend Britain in WW2 amongst these challenges. THE FORGOTTEN BATTLE OF THE KURSK SALIENT Army Detachment Kempf ’s Auxiliary Offensive By Valeriy Zamulin and translated and edited by Stuart Britton

A companion work to the author's study of II SS Panzer Corps’ offensive and the culminating clash at Prokhorovka. Using the Russian Ministry of Defense’s archives and Western sources, the author has produced a companion work to his masterful study of II SS Panzer Corps’ offensive and the culminating clash at Prokhorovka. He lays out the German and Soviet plans for the battle, and then goes through a meticulous examination of the course of the fighting, as III Panzer Corps suffered initial setbacks in its attempt to link up with the right flank of II SS Panzer Corps (then extemporized on the battlefield to get the offensive going and to complete the link-up), while the Soviet side fought valiantly to prevent this (according to the plan of the Voronezh Front Commander-in-Chief, N.F. Vatutin).

DANISH VOLUNTEERS OF THE WAFFEN-SS Freikorps Danmark 1941-43 By Jens Pank Bjerregaard and Lars Larsen

Reproduces a huge number of previously unpublished photographs of Danish SS volunteers on the Eastern Front. Tells the story of Freikorps Danmark in pictures from 1941-1943. Freikorps Danmark was established as a Danish corps which had to fight communism and, from its beginning, it was controlled from Denmark and put under the control of the SS-Division Totenkopf and 1. SS-Brigade during its efforts on the Eastern Front. It was a relatively small corps, almost entirely consisting of Danish volunteers. During their two efforts on the Eastern Front, they suffered heavy casualties. In 1943, the High Command of Waffen-SS decided to abolish Freikorps Danmark and the personnel had to enter a new German division, which was directly controlled by Waffen-SS. The source of material for this book has been gathered from the photo collections of the old volunteers, which means that many of the photos have never been seen before.

THE END OF THE GALLOP The Battle for Kharkov February-March 1943 By Alexei Isaev, translated by Kevin Bridge

A remarkable and heavily illustrated account of the Battle for Kharkov. Based heavily on inaccessible Soviet records, this book presents a lively account of a pivotal battle on the Eastern Front, heavily illustrated with rare photographs. In the history of war there are not that many battles that changed one side’s strategy over a considerable period of time, becoming not only a material, but also a psychological factor in decision making. A classic example of this is the Battle of Smolensk in 1941, which forced the German leadership to change their strategy for ‘Barbarossa’ and to deploy their troops towards the northern, and eastern flanks of the Soviet-German front.

WORLD WAR 2

In the first days of August 1944 the Red Army rapidly approached East Prussia. Here, near the borders of the Third Reich in the area of Vilkavishkis heavy tank combats broke out. The day-by-day coverage of events, honest views of the Soviet and German commanders, statistical data from both Russian and German viewpoints, and the 'human element' based on first-hand accounts of Soviet tank officers all make this a valuable source of information. The Red Army’s Forcing of the East Wall, September-December 1943 Edited and translated by Richard Harrison

An account of the Red Army’s advance along the southwest strategic direction during the offensive that followed the Battle of Kursk in July-August 1943.

WORLD WAR 2

Details a critical period in the Red Army’s advance along the southwest strategic direction during the general offensive that followed the fighting in the area of the Kursk salient in July-August 1943. The Germans, who were now on the strategic defensive in the East, sought to fall back and consolidate their front along the line of the Dnepr River. The Red Army’s success in overturning these expectations is the subject of this study. This is a composite work based upon three studies carried out by the Red Army General Staff’s military-historical directorate, which was charged with collecting and analysing the war’s experience.

Details about restrictions, rationing, the Black market and the terrifying German imposition, is commented upon by the narrator and illustrated by painstakingly directed reconstructions in full colour. This new approach to history endeavours to represent daily life through the medium of re-enactment, thanks to enthusiasts who preserve period clothing and the few symbols of the French ‘art de vivre’ which managed to survive despite the occupation.

BRITISH INFANTRY TANKS IN WORLD WAR II By Dick Tylor Before the start of the Second World War, British armoured doctrine was in a terrible muddle. Opinion had been divided between the proponents of the tank who saw it as the weapon of break-in, using it as an infantry support weapon, and those who saw it as the weapon of break-out, using it to restore mobility and to destroy the enemy’s forces behind the frontline. As a consequence, it was decided that Britain needed three different classes of tanks. Photosniper series

KA-50 AND KA-52 Werewolf, Black Shark, Erdogan, Alligator and the Others By Jakub Fojtík

A guide to the Kamov design bureau's finest aircraft.

AVIATION

Kamov design bureau was established in the late 1940s after a successful demonstration of single engine ultra-light Ka-8 type and its improved derivate Ka-10, which was first flown on 30th of August 1949. Both were rather experimental types used for exploring of options how to utilize the helicopter and the latter one was adopted by the Soviet naval aviation into the regular service. In total, four helicopters were test flown by the naval aviators. However, due to uncovered cockpit both types were really limited in their operational use and it just gave the background for further helicopter designs for Kamov. Photosniper series

A briliant guide to one of the Luftwaffe's most successful bomber planes. The Dornier Do 17 was one of the Luftwaffe’s three main bomber types early in the war. Designed as a passenger and mail plane, it ultimately proved true in the military version. Its last version, powered by Bramo 323 radial engines, was the Do 17 Z. A total of approximately 910 examples in several sub-variants, from Z-0 to Z-10 were built from early 1939 till mid-1940. Work on this aircraft began in 1943 and the design was referred to as Spezial Höhenjäger (special high altitude fighter). The RLM soon gave it the official designation Ta 152. Professor Kurt Tank procured three basic design variants: Normaljäger (conventional fighter), Höhenjäger (high altitude fighter) and Schlachtflugzeug (attack aircraft). Top Drawings series

HORTEN HO 229 By Marek Murawski and Marek Ryś Aircraft described as flying wing have aroused interest of the designers since the early, pioneer years of aviation. This definition is used to describe aircraft with specific design solutions, allowing for resignation from conventional vertical and horizontal empennage and primarily from conventional fuselage. Virtually the whole airframe comprises only the wing, housing both the cockpit and powerplant. A sub-group of flying wings are tailless aircraft, differing from the traditional designs only in lack of horizontal empennage. Monographs Special Edition 3D series AVIATION

WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR The last Viking By Vincent Carpentier While the crossing of the English Channel by William the Conqueror in 1066 has become legendary, it is not a well-known fact that it was also the last Viking expedition in history – a story that begins three centuries earlier on the North Sea coast when the king of France entrusted the county of Rouen to Rollon, a Viking chief. SPIES, LIES, AND CITIZENSHIP The Hunt for Nazi Criminals By Mary Kathryn Barbier

Explores the lives of Nazi fugitives sheltered and protected in the United States. In 2010, the New York Times obtained a copy of a confidential 2006 report by the US Justice Department titled “The Office of Special Investigations: Striving for Accountability in the Aftermath of the Holocaust.” The six-hundred-page report held shocking secrets regarding the government’s botched attempts to hunt and persecute Nazis in the United States and its willingness to harbor and even employ these criminals after World War II. Drawing from this report alongside other sources this book exposes scandalous new information about infamous Nazi fugitives sheltered and protected in the US and beyond, and the ongoing attempts to bring the remaining Nazis to justice.

THE DOMINICI AFFAIR Murder and Mystery in Provence By Martin Kitchen

One of France's most puzzling crimes in the broader context of social, economic, and historical currents in post-war France.

TRUE CRIME

In August 1952, the distinguished British scientist Sir Jack Drummond, alongside his wife, Lady Ann, and their ten-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, was brutally murdered on a roadside in rural France. Gaston Dominici, the man originally accused and convicted, was released from prison in 1960 to become a romanticized symbol of a simpler, genuine, and somehow more honest life from a bygone era. Reconstructing the facts of the case and setting it against broader social, economic, and historical currents in post-war France, The Dominici Affair sheds light on one of the most puzzling and notorious crimes of 20th Century France.

WAR BY NUMBERS Understanding Conventional Combat By Christopher A. Lawrence

A study of the basic nature of conventional warfare based on extensive analysis of historical combat to indicate the impact that various factors have on warfare. By demonstrating the impact a variety of factors have on combat, the author moves analysis beyond the work of Carl von Clausewitz and into modern data and interpretation. Using vast data sets, Lawrence examines force ratios, the human factor in case studies from World War II and beyond, the combat value of superior situational awareness, and the effects of dispersion, among other elements. Lawrence challenges existing interpretations of conventional warfare and shows how such combat should be conducted in the future. MILITARY SCIENCE

RESISTING SHERMAN A Confederate Surgeon’s Journal and the Civil War in the Carolinas, 1865 By Thomas Robertson Surprisingly little ink has been spilled on the final months of the Civil War in the Carolinas, despite its fascinating cast of characters, host of combats large and small, and its impact on the course of the war. Now in paperback, Resisting Sherman fills in many of the gaps and adds tremendously to our knowledge of this region and those troubled final days of the Confederacy.

By W. Davis Waters and Joseph Brown Gabriel J. Rains was a Confederate Brigadier General who was more than a military officer—he was a scientist. He invented three mines: the “subterra shell” (land mine), the keg torpedo, and the submarine mortar battery (both naval mines). Rains had a significant military career as he introduced a new form of weaponry. To some, he is regarded as the “father of modern mine warfare.” Gabriel Rains and the Confederate Torpedo Bureau by W. Davis Waters and Joseph I. Brown tells his remarkable story.
