SO UTI N E’S PORTR A ITS COOKS, WAITER S A N D BE LLBOYS EDITED BY KAR E N S E R R E S A N D BA R N A BY W R I G H T Chaim Soutine (1893–1943) produced some of the most powerful and expressive portraits of modern times. His ability to capture in paint the character, humanity and emotion of his sitters is the hallmark of Soutine’s greatest work. The major exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery, London, focuses upon one of his most important series of portraits; his paintings of cooks, waiters and bellboys who sat for him in Paris and the South of France during the 1920s. These works helped to establish Soutine’s reputation as a major avant-garde painter, seen by many as the twentieth century heir to van Gogh. This will be the first time that this outstanding group of masterpieces has ever been brought together and it will be the first exhibition of Soutine’s work in London for over thirty years. This publication will bring together the most comprehensive group of these portraits. It will be a unique opportunity to experience the power and profound emotion of Soutine’s art.

His extraordinary painting The Angel of Mercy, the centrepiece of this book, is one of the most controversial images in 18th-century British art. Highmore expert, Jacqueline Riding, will set this extraordinary painting within the context of the artist’s life and work, as well as broader historical and artistic contexts. JAN ST E E N ’ S O L D T E STAME N T SC E N E S BY RO B E RT WE N L E Y, N I N A CAH I L L AN D ROSAL I E VAN G UL I C K The Leiden-born artist Jan Steen (1626–1679) is widely admired as one of the most engaging and technically brilliant painters of the Dutch Golden Age. This volume accompanies an exhibition that will be the first in the UK devoted to Steen’s Old Testament subjects. The focal point will be his magnificent Wrath of Ahasuerus (c.1668–69), one of the highlights of the Barber’s collection, which will be joined by a number of other paintings by Steen from private and public collections across the world. Three essays will examine the core themes of the show – the role of Jewish history in Steen’s Old Testament scenes; the influence of Dutch theatre on his work; and the critical response to his Old Testament paintings from the 17th century to date.

C HE V E NI NG A SEAT OF DIPLOMACY BY JULIUS BRYANT Chevening stands in a magnificent park below the wooded escarpment of the North Downs in Kent. It has a history dating back around 800 years, but the house we see today is almost entirely the creation of seven generations of the Stanhope family, building on the original Inigo Jones house of 1630. For 250 years the Stanhopes served their country as soldiers and statesmen, and at Chevening as patrons of architecture and art. This new guide highlights the contributions of the Earls and Countesses Stanhope to the building, furniture, pictures, gardens and landscape of Chevening. It also gives a short account of the family in the wider world in order to set their creations in context. Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Chevening Act coming into effect with the death of the last Earl Stanhop and the 300th anniversary of his family’s acquisition of Chevening Estate.

Having studied art under Adolphe Valette at the local Manchester School of Art and then The Slade School of Art, Karl Hagedorn’s training was completed working under Maurice Denis, where he absorbed a range of avant-garde styles. He exhibited at a number of leading galleries in London and the provinces, and was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the New English Art Club and the NS. Hagedorn has only been the subject of one exhibition and publication: Manchester’s First Modernist, a catalogue produced by the Chris Beetles Gallery on the occasion of the retrospective organised in conjunction with the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester.

David Evans’ death in a road accident in 1988, at the age of 59, bought to an abrupt end the career of one of the most distinguished watercolourists of his generation. The recent discovery of pictures remaining in his studio, nearly thirty years after the memorial tribute staged by the Redfern Gallery in 1988, provides the opportunity for a new generation to discover his work through the publication of this first ever book on David Evans and the accompanying touring exhibition. Evans’ strikingly large watercolours, typically measuring over one metre in height or breadthspan two decades from the late 1960s to the late 1980s, evoking a vision that is still surprisingly

F RO M DADA TO VO G UE BY YO R I C K B LUME N F E L D Erwin Bluemenfeld was a pioneering photographer best known for his fashion photography published in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar in the 1940s and 1950s. He embraced Dada-ism and in many ways was a true Surrealist both in composition and technique. Produced to accompany the exhibition at Osborne Samuel Gallery in October 2016 this catalogue highlights Erwin Blumenfeld’s exceptional early work in collage and experimental photography, and included rare works from the artist’s family. It includes an essay by Erwin Blumenfeld’s son Yorick and Exhibition Curator Lou Proud.

Created to accompany the 2016 exhibition at Osborne Samuel Gallery, Modern British Art includes notable new acquisitions: a fine early Ben Nicholson; a collection of important etchings by Lucian Freud; early works by Henry Moore and Lyn Chadwick (shown for the first time); and rare pictures by Peter Lanyon and Alfred Wallis from a private collection. The exhibition was particularly strong in post war sculpture, focussing on the group of artists who came to fame at the Venice Biennales of 1952 and 1956. It includes work by Kenneth Armitage, Prunella Clough, Paul Feiler, Barbara Hepworth, and Peter Kinley.

P O RTABLE STU DIO PER SON AL ARCHI V E S OF YOU TH CU LTU R E VOL. 1: BIRMIN GHA M , U K BY TREVOR APP LE SON
In 2014 Trevor Appleson was commissioned by MAC Birmingham and the Library of Birmingham to create a new body of work exploring the city’s youth culture. Equipped with a film camera and a plain black cloth to use as a backdrop for his photographs, Appleson went out into the streets of Birmingham to its music venues and its shopping districts, in daytime and at night and photographed its youth, from ravers to girl guides, most in their teens and early twenties. Portable Studio will feature approximately 200 portraits alongside a fascinating archive donated by the sitters; a unique mix of physical and digital material ranging from crumpled diaries to selfies posted on social media, the contents of ‘memory boxes’, to vintage family photographs and Google search histories. The book is divided into three sections:
PORTRAITS grouped by location and ‘tribe’, ravers, punks, rockers, school kids etc.
A RC H I V E S 70 personal archives from selected subjects invited to collaborate further.
I N D E X an annotated index completes the project with notes and descriptions. Supported by Arts Council England, Portable Studio is a critical document of contemporary British youth culture, made in collaboration with a selection of the 700 young people Appleson photographed for his commission.

Since Seth Stein founded his practice in 1990, he has gained an international reputation and numerous awards for creating extraordinary buildings, both residential and commercial. Running through the practice’s work is a deceptive simplicity, an exciting and innovative use of new building methods and materials, along with an intrinsic environmental sustainability. This monograph not only aims to bring together the full range of Seth Stein Architects’ projects for the first time, but in doing so, to offer insights into the

Richly illustrated and drawing on historical examples and contemporary design studies, the book takes the reader through the history, theory and design of the prefab, leading up to a discussion of contemporary problems and opportunities. Including a broad international survey, wide-ranging interviews, case studies of leading designers and companies, and cutting-edge research in the field, this book suggests a future scenario for industrialized building that will both challenge those professions concerned with the design and production of the built environment, and stimulate the public imagination.

CO UPL E S IN A RT BY AGATA TORO M A N OF F
This book tells the story of romantic companionship in one hundred works of art. Chronologically arranged and emotionally driven, this study of couples runs through many cultures, civilizations, and epochs. With examples from across the globe, it portrays iconic and lesser-known (yet fascinating) couples immortalised in the history of art. Whether affectionately embracing, engaged in flirtatious exchanges, seducing one another, or simply enjoying each other’s company, readers are invited into their complex world of passion, lust, and love. This celebration of these romantic relationships is expressed through sculptures, paintings, photographs, tapestries, stained glass, and illustrations. Gathered together are representations of couples from ancient cultures (Amenophis IV and Nefertiti), the Middle Ages (Tristan and Isolde), and the Renaissance (Paolo and Francesca). The book also covers contemporary pairs such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono or Gilbert and George, and artists such as Manet, Gainsborough, Renoir, Metsys, Rembrandt, Rubens, Blake, Moore, and Munch, to name but a few. The artists offer us an extensive selection of couples: from history, folklore, and legend, to pairs of a purely fictional nature. This variety of artistic means and vision results in a charming and irresistible collection.
