IAN FLEMING
I a n F l e m i n g a n d O p e r at io n Golden Eye
This book tells the story of the various Allied operations and schemes instigated to keep Spain and Portugal out of WWII, which included the widespread bribery of high-ranking Spanish officials and the duplicity of Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, head of the Abwehr. Ian Fleming and Alan Hillgarth were the architects of Operation Golden Eye, the sabotage and disruption scheme that would be put in place had Germany invaded Spain. Fleming visited the Iberian Peninsula and Tangiers several times during the war, arguably his greatest achievement in WWII and the closest he came to being a real secret agent. It was these visits which supplied much of the background material for his fiction – Fleming even called his home on Jamaica where he created 007 ‘Goldeneye’.
World War 2
The book begins with Hitler’s dilemma about which way to move, and his meeting with Francisco Franco September 2018 • 9781612006857 • £19.99 at Hendaye in October 1940, a major turning point Hardback • 228 x 152mm in the war when an alliance between Germany and 256 pages • 22 b/w photos, 6 maps Spain seemed possible. Simmons explores the British reaction to this, with Operation Tracer being created by Admiral Godfrey, head of Naval Intelligence. This was a plan to leave a listening and observation post buried in the Rock of Gibraltar should it have fallen to the Germans. A chapter is also devoted to Portugal – the SIS and SOE operations there and the vital Wolfram wars. Operation Golden Eye was eventually put on standby in 1943 as the risk of the Nazis occupying Spain was much reduced. Simmons consulted Foreign Office, SOE, CIA and OKW files when writing this book.

Blood Money Stories of an ex-Recce’s Missions as a Private Military Contractor in Iraq By Johan Raath
An action-packed account of life as a private military contractor in Iraq, written with candour by an ex-South African Special Forces (Recce) soldier. ‘I remember the cracking sound of the AK-47 bullets as they tore through our windscreen . . . A piece of bullet struck my bulletproof vest in the chest area and another piece broke off and lodged in my left forearm.’ Johan Raath and a security team were ambushed in May 2004 while on a mission to reconnoitre a power plant south of Baghdad for an American firm. He had been in the country for only two weeks.
Modern Warfare July 2018 • 9781612006611 • £19.99 Hardback • 228 x 152mm 344 pages • 94 b/w photos & images, 8 maps
This was a taste of what was to come over the next few years as he worked as a private military contractor (PMC) in Iraq. His mission? Not to wage war but to protect lives. Raath and his team provided security for engineers working on reconstruction projects in Iraq. Whether in the notorious Triangle of Death, in the deadly area around Ramadi or in the faction-ridden Basra, Raath had numerous hair-raising experiences. Key to his survival was his training as a Special Forces operator, or Recce. This riveting account offers a rare glimpse into the world of private military contractors and the realities of everyday life in one of the world’s most violent conflict zones.

THE FIRST BRIDGE TOO FAR
The First Bridge Too Far
For the very first time, the Battle of Primosole Bridge is brought to life in a well-researched narrative solely dedicated to one of the bloodiest and hardest fought battles for British airborne troops of World War Two. Primosole Bridge in Sicily (13–16 July 1943) provided the stage for the first instance of opposing elite paratroopers parachuting into battle and then fighting each other in a see-saw battle raging under the blazing Mediterranean sky. It’s a story of courage and determination. A story of legendary military units and their commanders. A story that now, on the eve of its 75th anniversary, finally needs to be told.
The paratroopers found themselves cut-off behind enemy lines with dwindling ammunition and evergrowing enemy forces encircling. Their courage and determination in standing up to overwhelming odds World War 2 allowed the ground forces to arrive and capture the bridge in the nick of time before it was destroyed. July 2018 • 9781612006895 • £19.99 The hard-won experience gained by the 1st Parachute Hardback • 228 x 152mm Brigade was again tested only a year later at the Battle 256 pages of Arnhem, the battle christened a bridge too far. It was in fact an almost identical battle, but on a larger scale, to the ferocious fight that the British paratroopers had faced only months previously. The Battle of Arnhem is well documented. The Battle of Primosole Bridge, which provided the foundations for the men and planning for the legendary events at Arnhem, is virtually unheard of and needs to be told at last in order to honour the sacrifice of Britain’s unsung war heroes.

US Sixth Army Group August 1944–February 1945 By Simon Forty and Leo Marriott
From the Riviera to the Rhine details the invasion of France in 1944 from the French Riviera to Strasbourg, using a mixture of media to provide a complete overview of the campaign. Two months after D-Day, just as the battle of Normandy was reaching its climax, with all eyes on the Falaise Pocket, the Allies unleashed the second invasion of France not in the Pas de Calais but the French Riviera. Immaculately planned, effectively undertaken, the Allies quickly broke out of their bridgehead, drove 400 miles into France in three weeks, and liberated 10,000 square miles of French territory while inflicting 143,250 German casualties. The images of palm trees and azure seas obscure our view of this campaign. It was no cakewalk. The Germans knew the Allies were coming and had strong defences in the area. A shortage of landing craft, vehicles, and matériel meant that the US Seventh and French First armies were restricted in the assault. The heavy fog and anti-glider defences made for a difficult airborne assault, but it was carried out effectively, the amphibious assault was textbook in execution and the invasion of southern France ended up as a significant victory.
But the story of 6th Army Group wasn’t finished. Taking up a position on the east flank of Third Army it fought its way through the Vosges and withstood the Germans’ last throw: Operation Nordwind – the vain attempt to relieve pressure on the Ardennes assault by attacking in the Vosges. Heavy fighting pressed hard towards Strasbourg but the Allies were ultimately victorious, inflicting severe losses on the Germans.

The Pocket Manual Series
Edited by Chris McNab
A revealing manual which advises the reader how to command a submarine one of the most dangerous jobs possible during the Second World War. Submarine commanders in WWII dealt with both enormous risk and responsibility; charged with sinking enemy shipping whilst avoiding detection. It was a deadly game; the Germans lost over 600 U-boats during the war, and one in five submariners in the US Navy were killed, the highest proportion of any of the services.

The Merchant Navy Seaman Pocket Manual Edited by Chris McNab
An insightful guide to what life was like in the Merchant Navy during the war, when their brave efforts helped the country avoid starvation. The Merchant Navy Seaman Pocket Manual provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of these intrepid seamen. it combines information on training, gunnery, convoys, anti-submarine techniques along with personal accounts. This pitches the reader into the heart of this vital but often forgotten arena of WWII.

Authoritative, entertaining & accessible introductions to military history Alexander the G r eat Conqueror, Commander, King By John Sadler and Rosie Serdiville
An overview of Alexander’s life from a military standpoint, looking at how he was able to conquer the known world. Alexander was perhaps the greatest conquering general in history. In just over a generation, his northern Greek state of Macedon rose to control the whole of the vast Persian Empire. In a dozen years Alexander took the whole of Asia Minor and Egypt, destroyed the once mighty Persian Empire, and pushed his army eastwards as far as the Indus. No-one in history has equalled his achievement. Julius Caesar, contemplating his hero’s statue, is said to have wept because by contrast he had accomplished so little. This concise history gives an overview of Alexander’s life from a military standpoint, from his early military exploits to the creation of his empire and the legacy left after his premature death. Erich Raeder Admiral of the Third Reich
Keith Bird
By Keith Bird
A major biography of the head of the German navy during World War II, Erich Raeder. Erich Raeder led the German navy from 1928 to 1943. Yet until now, no full-length biography has been written about this extraordinary naval figure. While most historians have viewed Raeder as a product of the Wilhelmian era and heir to Admiral von Tirpitz’s sea power ideology, this work clearly demonstrates Raeder’s affinity with Hitler’s fascism. Drawing on archival resources, Bird examines the evolution of Raeder’s concept of naval strategy and his attempts to achieve the political and military means necessary to attain the navy’s global naval ambitions. The impact of Hitler’s influence on both the pace and the nature of naval rearmament and the conduct of the Kriegsmarine in war are also examined.

First published in 1958, this first Germanperspective account of Dunkirk is available in English for the first time. The German Army invaded France on 10 May 1940, and in just over ten days they had left three French field armies, Belgian forces and the British Expeditionary Force with their backs to the sea, trapped at Dunkirk. Though the cost was devastatingly high, Dunkirk was held long enough for over 300,000 Allied troops to be evacuated back to England, with the remainder of the rearguard of French troops surrendering on 4 June. The British narrative of the retreat and evacuation that prompted perhaps Winston Churchill’s most famous wartime speech has always been well-known; however only now is Hans-Adolf Jacobsen’s detailed account of the battle from the German perspective available in English.

Two Flags over Iwo Jima Solving the Mystery of the U.S. Marine Corps’ Proudest Moment
The saga of the flags on Iwo Jima has fascinated America for decades. But the story of how the flags got there, and even the identity of the soldiers in the photos, has been muddied by history. Eric Hammel here sets the record straight, viewing complex events through the lens of the story of the infantry company in which all the flag raisers served. Two Flags over Iwo Jima reveals the all-butforgotten first flag raising, and the aftermath of the popularization campaign undertaken by the postWWII Marine Corps and national press. Not only is the full story behind the photograph revealed, but also the real heroism of the men behind this most fervent expression of American patriotism.

Casemate Illustrated is a new series exploring key elements of military history, from campaigns, units and battles to aircraft, ships and weapons. Extensively illustrated with photographs and colour profiles of tanks, aircraft and other vehicles, each volume provides a wealth of visual detail. With profiles of key personnel, a timeline, and explanatory text boxes, the concise text gives a clear overview of events and highlights the most important information on any given topic.
German Armor in Normandy By Yves Buffetaut Throughout the Second World War, a shift occurred in the composition of the large armoured units of armies which led to an increase in the power of their tanks in particular. The Germans were no exception. This volume of Casemate Illustrated explores the initial struggle to gain control of Caen after the Allies had landed on the beaches of Normandy which resulted in the ferocious German Tiger tanks destroying the 7th Armoured Division, with British losses totaling twenty-seven tanks. However, their strategies ultimately ended in disaster for the Germans as the Allies broke through the German line by the end of July. With over 100 photos, diagrams showing the composition of German armoured divisions, and colour profiles of tanks and other armoured vehicles, this is a detailed examination of the German armoured forces in Normandy in 1944.

ILLUSTRATED Ardennes 1944 by Yves Buffetaut German army deficiencies are often cited as the reason for the failure of the German counteroffensive in the Ardennes region. It is certainly true that the three German armies regrouped for the offensive were in differing states; only the 5th Panzer Army was in something resembling good condition, with the 6th and the 7th mediocre at best. The divisions were also often not mobile enough because of the lack of automotive equipment and were short on tanks and artillery. But these cannot be considered as the only reasons for the German failure: it was also the speed of the Allied reaction, and especially the conduct of the Americans, who experienced some of the fiercest combat of the war, and suffered over 100,000 casualties. This volume in the Casemate Illustrated series, with over 100 photographs and 24 colour profiles describes in detail the different events that caused the German defeat.

Operation Typhoon The german Assault on Moscow 1941 By Philippe Naud After the initial successes of Operation Barbarossa, at the end of September 1941 Hitler turned his focus to Moscow, with the unshakeable belief that capturing the capital would knock the Soviets out of the war. This volume in the Casemate Illustrated series concentrates on the main German assault of October 1941. Guderian’s panzer divisions at first made sweeping gains but these successes allowed the Soviets time to re-group as the encircled armies did not surrender and had to be dealt with. It was clear that the war in the East was not entering its final days as German high command believed. Illustrated with over 150 photographs, plus profile drawings of tanks, vehicles and aircraft, it gives a vivid impression of the situation for both protagonists, and a detailed analysis of the critical days as the fate of Moscow and perhaps the whole war hung in the balance.

PETER HARMSEN World War 2
By Peter Harmsen
First in a trilogy of books comprising a general history of war in the Asia Pacific. Unlike other histories, this book expands the narrative beginning long before Pearl Harbor and encompasses a much wider group of actors to produce the most complete narrative yet written and the first truly international treatment of the epic conflict. Storm Clouds over the Pacific shows how the war can only be understood if ancient hatreds and longstanding geopolitics are taken into account. Peter Harmsen demonstrates how Japan and China’s ancient enmity grew in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries leading to increased tensions in the 1930s which exploded into conflict in 1937. A war of attrition continued up to 1941, the year when Japan made the momentous decision for all-out war.

During World War II the Ninth Air Force comprised air-to-ground aviators, charged with destroying the enemy close to the front and below the clouds, often bringing them face to face with their German opponents. Thunderbolts Triumphant provides a narrative history of the men who flew these missions and maintained the aircraft as they navigated Europe. Special emphasis is given to its most spectacular missions such as the breaching of the Diueze Dam and its incredible performance during the Battle of the Bulge where it demolished much of the Sixth Panzer Armee as it tried to escape eastward.

Alpha One Sixteen A Combat Infantryman’s Year in Vietnam By Peter Clark
A new visceral memoir of a year of combat with Alpha Company, 1st Infantry Battalion, in Vietnam, 1966. Peter Clark’s year in Vietnam began in July 1966, when he was shipped out with hundreds of other young recruits, as a replacement in the 1st Infantry Division. Clark was assigned to the Alpha Company. Clark gives a visceral, vivid and immediate account of life in the platoon, as he progresses from green recruit to seasoned soldier over the course of a year in the complexities of the Vietnamese conflict. Alpha One Sixteen follows Clark as he discovers how to cope with the vagaries of the enemy. Clark’s vigilance develops as he gets used to ‘living in mortal terror,’ which a brush with death in a particularly terrifying fire fight does nothing to dispel. As he continues his journey, he chronicles those less fortunate; the heavy toll being taken all round him is powerfully described at the end of each chapter.

The Battle of Korsun-Cherkassy The Encirclement and Breakout of Army Group South, 1944 By Nikolaus von Vormann; translated by Geoffrey Brooks
An account of the Battle of Cherkassy, sometimes referred to as the Korsun Pocket, written by one of the German commanders present there.
World War 2
This account of the bloody Eastern Front battle is written by Generalleutnant von Vormann who was a commander at the battle. Starting with the retreat to the Dnepr in 1943, he describes the battle of Kirowograd from 5th–17th January 1944, before the final breakout. His mainly factual account also contains a description of the psychological effects on the men of this most brutal and physically exhausting battle. It is one of the few primary source materials that exists and is therefore of significant historical interest.

The Last Siege The Mobile Campaign, Alabama 1865 By Paul Brueske
A new study of the 1865 Mobile campaign, exploring events surrounding the Union’s siege and capture of Mobile, a battle which ended the Civil War.
American Civil War
It has long been acknowledged that General Robert E. Lee’s surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia ended the civil war at the Battle of Appomattox in April 1865. However, the often overlooked last siege of the war was the Mobile campaign, crucial to securing a complete victory and the final surrender of the last Confederate force at Mississippi. The Last Siege explores the events surrounding this siege and capture of Mobile, Alabama. Many acts of heroism occurred in this the Confederacy’s last campaign which ended in the final surrender at Citronelle in May.

Treat ’Em Rough The Birth of American Armor 1917–20 By Dale E. Wilson
A detailed account of the first use of armor in the U.S. Army during World War I. Tanks caused havoc among the Germans when they first appeared on the battlefields of Europe in 1917. These metal monsters broke up the trench warfare stalemate and thus hastened the armistice. This is the first full study of the U.S. Army’s World War I Tank Corps. A new breed of army officers, of which Eisenhower and Patton are the most famous, saw the promise of this new technology and staked their careers on it. Using eye-witness accounts from the archives at the Army War College and elsewhere, Wilsom details the design and building of the first tanks, the training of crews, the monstrous problem of transport in an age when roads were built for horse-drawn carriages, and the three great battles in which tanks revolutionized modern warfare: St Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and St. Quentin.

World War 2
On September 15, 1944, the United States, in its effort to defeat the Japanese Empire, invaded a tiny island named Peleliu. This campaign inflicted terrific losses on the First Marines until they were withdrawn. The division would be out of action for six months, with the three rifle regiments averaging over 50% casualties - the highest unit losses in Marine Corps history. This book analyses in detail the many things that went wrong to make these casualties so excessive, and in doing so, corrects several earlier accounts of the campaign.

By Peter G. Tsouras
A biography of Major General George H. Sharpe, the creator of the first professional intelligence operation in America, which was fundamental to the Union’s success in the Civil War. The vital role of the military all-source intelligence in the eastern theater of operations during the U.S. Civil War is told through the biography of its creator, George H. Sharpe. With the discovery of the day-by-day journal of John C. Babcock, Sharpe’s civilian deputy and order-of-battle analyst in late 1963, and the unpublished Hooker papers, Tsouras has discovered a unique window into the flow of intelligence reporting which gives a new perspective in the study of military operations in the U.S. Civil War.

The first full history of the U.S. Army Special Forces who served and fought in the Secret War in Laos.
20th Century History
The Secret War in Laos was one of the first “Long Wars” for special operations, spanning a period of about thirteen years. It was one of the largest CIAparamilitary operations of the time, kept out of the view of the American public until now. Between 1959 and 1974, Green Berets were covertly deployed to Laos to prevent a communist take-over or at least preserve the kingdom’s neutrality. Clouded in secrecy until the 1990s, this story is comprehensively told for the first time using official archival documents and interviews with veterans.

The Tank Killers A History of America’s World War II Tank Destroyer Force By Harry Yeide
The Tank Killers is the story of the American Tank Destroyer Force in North Africa, Italy, and the European Theatre during World War II. The tank destroyer (TD) was a bold-if some would say flawed-answer to the challenge posed by the seemingly unstoppable German blitzkrieg. The TD was conceived to be light and fast enough to outmanoeuvre panzer forces and go where tanks could not. The book draws heavily on the records of the tank destroyer battalions and the units with which they fought. Veterans of the force add their personal stories. World War 2

Check Six! A Thunderbolt Pilot’s War Across the Pacific By Jim Curran and Terrence Popravak
There were no mission limits for a pilot in the Pacific during World War II; unlike in Europe, you flew until it was time to go home. So it was for James “Jug” Curran.
World War 2 Aviation
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, James “Jug” Curran volunteered to try flying in the blue yonder, and trained as an Army fighter pilot. It is a tale of perseverance, as Curran flew over 200 combat missions, and with the men of the 348th Fighter Group proved the Thunderbolt’s great capability as they battled their way against a stubborn and deadly foe. This work increases the body of knowledge on the critical role of aviation in the Pacific War, as U.S. fighter pilots took the lead in our counter-offensive against the short-lived island Empire.

Missing Presumed Murdered One raid, two trials, three lost airmen By Sean Feast and Marc Hall
The story of one Second World War bombing raid, two war crimes trials, and the search to find three ‘missing’ airmen. On 12 December 1944, Bomber Command launched a raid on the Krupps Steel works at Essen. The attack was devastatingly successful, and completed for the loss of only a handful of aircraft. Three of the airmen lost in the raid are still listed as ‘missing’, believed killed in action. Extensive investigative research by aviation historians Sean Feast and Marc Hall has discovered the truth about what happened to these missing men, and how they are linked to the murder of three unidentified RAF airmen, on a bridge, within twenty-four hours of believing they were safe. They have pieced together the harrowing story of the murders, the identities of the victims and their killers, and the tantalising possibility that at least one of the ‘missing’ men may at last have been found.

By Jacques R. Pauwels
An in-depth examination of Hitler’s ties to big business in Germany, the United States, Britain, and France. For big business in Germany and around the world, Hitler and his National Socialist party were good news. Business was bad in the 1930s, and for multinational corporations Germany was a bright spot in a world suffering from the Great Depression. As Jacques R. Pauwels explains in this book, corporations were delighted with the profits that came from re-arming Germany, and then supplying both sides of the Second World War. Basing his work on the recent findings of scholars in many European countries and the US, Pauwels explains how Hitler gained and held the support of powerful businessmen.

Canada’s little-known role in the early history of aviation. Alexander Graham Bell and his team of innovative young engineers created groundbreaking new technologies during three years of furious activity in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, in the early 1900s. The knowledge and skills of this group allowed them to innovate flight technologies which have continued to be fundamental to aircraft design. Modern Chinese Warplanes Chinese Air Force – Combat Aircraft and Units By Andreas Rupprecht
MODERN CHINESE WARPLANES
Combining magnificent illustrations and in-depth analysis, this fully revised edition is the most up to date book currently available on Chinese military aviation.
Chinese Air Force – Aircraft and Units
Andreas Rupprecht
In 2012 the original Modern Chinese Warplanes set the standard as a uniquely compact yet comprehensive directory of modern Chinese air power, combining magnificent illustrations and in-depth analysis. Now almost six years later, much of the fascination that Chinese military aviation holds for the analyst and enthusiast still stems from the thick veil of secrecy that surrounds it. However, in the time that has passed since the first edition a plethora of new types, systems and weapons have been revealed. What is more, the structure of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has been completely revised by transforming the former Military Regions into Theatre Commands. In parallel, the general structure has been thoroughly modernised to cope with China’s latest challenges. Aviation October 2018 • 9780997309263 • £35.99 Paperback • 280 x 210mm 256 pages
This new study includes the latest developments emerging from behind the ‘Great Wall’, including the J-20 stealth fighter programme, Y-20 strategic transport and the latest developments in UAVs that are equipping a rapidly modernising air arm.
The centrepiece consists of almost 100 fully illustrated pages detailing the organisational structure of the air force, providing an easy-to-use review of all known flying units, their equipment and their markings. No other book has ever attempted to present this level of accuracy in this way. Modern Chinese Warplanes portrays the PLAAF in a degree of detail that was previously unavailable.

Le sang bleu By Christian Descombes
With the arrival of a new Alpine model in 2017, this book celebrates the impact of this iconic rally car which won the World Championships in 1973. The presentation of a new Alpine in 2017 has revived a legendary brand, missing for 22 long years. Alpine was born from the passion of Jean Rédélé, who gave life to his dream of a rally-winning car in 1955. The most emblematic model, the A 110 berlinette dominated the European rallies of the 1960s, before winning the World Championship in 1973. The prices reached in recent collector’s auctions are a measure of the passion that continues to animate the many fans of the car.

A dramatic account of arguably the most impressive raid of the Second World War at Saint-Nazaire. More than seventy-five years after wards, Chariot is still thought of as the most daring and most spectacular commando operation of the Second World War. To tell the story of this extraordinary coup de main, Jean-Charles Stasi has consulted the German, British and French archives, interviewed former commandoes as well as the inhabitants of Saint-Nazaire who witnessed the raid. His tale is lively and alert and is illustrated with a lot of period photographs, as well as maps, drawings and boat profiles. World War 2

The rich and poignant story of a young Frenchman who refused to surrender his country and who escaped on a boat to continue the fight against the invaders. This book tells a very beautiful and magnificent adventure, that of a young Frenchman humiliated by the 1940 defeat who fled aboard a Breton crayfish boat to carry on the fight for freedom. Jaco fought in the RAF squadrons, experiencing the risks, the kills, the loneliness of the hunter, the camaraderie, and the fraternity. This tale full of panache is breathtaking through and through.

A Long Week in March The 36th (Ulster) Division in the German Spring Offensive, March 1918 By Michael James Nugent
A fascinating detailed account of the experiences of a British Infantry Division during one of the most significant offensives of the entire war.
World War 1
Whilst much has been written of the exploits of the 36th (Ulster) Division at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, little recognition has been given to equally heroic exploits in the same area in March 1918. This is remedied in this fascinating account in which factors leading to the positioning of the Division opposite St Quentin are examined. The accounts are drawn from battalion war diaries, personal accounts and the regimental history of the German attackers which provides an interesting insight and helps to corroborate accounts from the Ulster Division.

Westermann Most studies on the subject, based on the chronological scope and numerical preponderance of ground advising missions, have quite naturally focused on these past efforts. This work seeks in part to help redress this current imbalance by examining a number of historical case studies dealing with air advisory efforts. The Bulgarian Air Force in the Second World War By Alexander Mladenov, Evgeni Andonov and Krassimir Grozev
A concise research on the wartime development and operations of the Bulgarian Air Force. This book covers the entire spectrum of air–to-air, air-to-ground and reconnaissance operations undertaken by the Bulgarian air arm between 1941 and 1945 as well as the naval operations in the Black Sea. Having been a strong Germany ally during World War I, Bulgaria was a natural candidate to join the Axis. As the Second World War reached the Balkans, Bulgaria’s small air force fought first for and then against the Axis. In 1943–1944 the air arm defended the Bulgarian territory against the Allied bomber raids and supported the Bulgarian land forces deployed in Greece and Yugoslavia. However, after 9 September 1944 the Bulgarian air arm was involved in the support of its former enemies, the Allies. World War 2

How Modest are the Bravest! Courage from the beaches of Normandy and beyond By Ken Tout
This book details battle actions and traces war heroes back to civilian life. This is a unique book about heroes of the Second World War. It dramatically describes the battle actions of 22 warriors who won outstanding gallantry awards but reaches out far beyond the bare battle narrative. In addition to some who won a supreme award, such as the VC, it also includes other lesser known men who achieved a considerable “aggregate of valour” over a long period. The writing is spiced by the realisation that the author was in at least one case there at the scene, or was at similar scenes, or had developed a post-war friendship with some of those featured. This book will help to reinvigorate the memories of the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice at our most difficult hour.

This book is extremely well documented thanks to a wide range of primary and secondary sources, the bibliography, at over 40 pages, providing an unprecedented guide. Radley has extensively used contemporary manuals and the published histories of 45 British divisions and all the Canadian battalions, each being corroborated with other accounts. On The Dangerous Edge offers a unique approach and perspective with thorough and careful analysis based on broad and deep research in both familiar and heretofore neglected areas. Scots in Great War London The Scottish Community on the Home Front and in Battle 1914–1919 Edited by Paul McFarland and Hugh Pym, foreword by HRH The Princess Royal
The shared experiences and sacrifices of Scots in London during World War One. Famous names such as Sir Douglas Haig, John Buchan and Lord Kinnaird, known as football’s first superstar, feature in this new work on World War One. They were all linked with Scottish organisations in London which had to rise to the challenge of World War One. The book describes how St Columba’s Church of Scotland in Knightsbridge fed and entertained nearly 50,000 Scottish troops heading home on leave or returning to the trenches. John Buchan was an elder of the church, so too Sir Douglas Haig after the war. There was a heavy toll amongst Scots in London who were members of the Caledonian Club. One hundred years on from the final year of conflict this book examines the close links between these organisations and their shared hopes, fears and tragic losses.

It describes some of the technological developments, the political control, coordination and authorisation of missions and the vital roles played by third party states including Scandinavia and Turkey. 20th Century History

British Territorials 1914–19 By Peter Stanley
Some 50,000 British Territorials served in India during the Great War. Astonishingly, it has taken a century for a book on them to be written. The Territorials never expected to serve abroad, but volunteered for ‘Imperial Service’ at Lord Kitchener’s request. Instead of going to France, in 1914 they went to India, to release Regulars for the front. ‘Terriers’ in India, based on the abundant but almost untouched holdings of county archives and regimental museums mainly in southern English counties, tells their story for the first time.

For What We Have Done The First Attack on Bellewaarde, 16 June 1915 By Michael R.B. McLaren
Constitutes a detailed analysis of British trench assault tactics, as employed in the appalling conditions of the Ypres salient, mid-1915. This study offers a detailed analysis of the enormous, almost insurmountable challenges faced by the British Army on the Western Front in mid-1915. The unavoidable risks associated with undertaking offensive operations are contrasted with the potential consequences of inaction. Despite the awful outcome, evidence will show that serious attempts were being made to improve tactics and to implement technology to overcome the trench stalemate. Although British innovation was continually thwarted, this period still demonstrates the first tentative steps to the victory in 1918.

The Hall of Mirrors War and Warfare in the Twentieth Century By Jim Storr
What can we learn from warfare in the 20th century? This book looks at the strategy, the campaigns, the tactics, the people and the technology. The Hall of Mirrors is not a narrative history. It takes a deep look at war, and warfare, in the 20th Century. It looks at the strategy, the operational art, and the tactics. It looks at how technology was developed and affected military events. It looks at the human beings, the human organisations, and how they affected events. It makes judgements and comes to conclusions. By 1919 the First World War was already over. Those millions had died; those empires had crumbled; those new nations had been born. Nothing similar has happened, thus far, in the 21st century. All the more reason to look back and consider what did happen, and what we might learn from war and warfare in the 20th century.

Useless Mouths The British Army’s Battles in France after Dunkirk May–June 1940 By Peter Whelan
The supply services of the BEF of 1939 were wholly unprepared for modern warfare and paid the price by their defeat. This book looks at the British Army’s supply service, how it developed, and how it failed, especially in the Crimea War, and how reforms in the 19th century reformed it. The focus of the book looks at the developments in the interwar years, and how it functioned during the French Campaign of May/ June 1940. The role of the LOC after the German breakthrough in France has been underestimated and under reported. Only the fortuitous mechanisation of the general transport system of the Army, not due to doctrine or foresight but a dearth of horses in the civil economy, enabled the Army to retreat faster and further than their horse bound allies – the French – and enemies – the Germans.

Catholic Chaplains with the British Army on the Western Front 1916–19 By Stephen Bellis
Religious, military, political, and social history is explored through the varied personal experiences of Catholic chaplains on the Western Front. This book explores the lives of Catholic chaplains on the Western Front mainly through the eyes of two contrasting personalities. It is written to appeal to those who want to know more about the religious, military and social real-life experiences of a group of largely forgotten men. It is an account of their personal struggles and joys, supported by those accounts of other chaplains, including the paintings of another priest who, unwittingly, graphically illustrated much of their testimony.

During the period from May 1793 until March 1795, he kept a diary in which he described the various actions, commanders and incidents, noting failures and poor leadership, and commenting on some of the wider events. Mons, an Artillery Battle By David Hutchison
A new history of the battle of Mons in August 1914, which dramatically challenges the conventional narrative, illuminating the importance of the artillery, and exposing the incompetence of General Haig under the stress of war. This book is a history of the Battle of Mons in August 1914. The book demonstrates that tactical success was achieved by effective artillery deployment. It exposes the differences between cavalry and infantry trained generals in the handling of artillery. It identifies those qualities in the British army that contributed to the victory and those that would be eroded by the significant loss of professional gunners that later occurred. The Battle of Mons was in many ways a dressrehearsal for the war on the Western Front. World War 1

The Wild Goose and the Eagle A Life of Marshal von Browne 1705–1757 By Christopher Duffy
Explores one of the finest soldiers of the old Imperial Austrian Army, Maximilian von Browne, based on a thorough investigation of the Viennese archives and of the terrain of the Marshal’s battles.
18th century History
Although little known in this country, Maximilian von Browne is counted among the finest soldiers of the old Imperial Austrian Army. As the present biography sets out to show, he was outstanding in his time for his vigorous conduct of war, and his extremely advanced idea of leadership and responsibility. Few commanders have taken so literally the phrase ‘to share the hardships of his men’. The book explores not just the life of a single commander, but the warfare of an age which holds many lessons for the present century.

Cheriton 1644 and the end of the Royalist Winter campaign in Hampshire By Serena Jones
A re-examination of the decisive defeat of the Royalists at the Battle of Cheriton in March 1644, using both contemporary 17th century sources and insights gleaned from 21st century investigative technology.
17th Century History
The battle of Cheriton, in March 1644, was a decisive yet unexpected defeat for the Hampshire detachment of King Charles’s ‘Oxford Army’. Despite starting the day in a strong position on high ground, by the end of it the Royalists had been decisively routed. In this book Serena Jones re-examines the battle by revisiting in detail the numerous contemporary sources such as memoirs and printed newsbooks, and for the first time using drone images to view a critical section of the battlefield from above.

The Battle of Killiecrankie The First Jacobite Campaign, 1689–1691 By Jonathan D. Oates
An account of the military struggle in Scotland from 1689–1691, focussing on the men who fought and died in the battles of Killiecrankie, Dunkeld and Cromdale. In 1689 a bloody battle took place at Killiecrankie. This book covers the fighting as a blow by blow account, using archival, archaeological, literary and published accounts to do so. But the battle, though decisive, did not mark the end of the struggle, for in the next month a beleaguered Scottish battalion faced a far larger Scottish force further south at the little town of Dunkeld. Warfare continued in the next year, with one battle in the Highlands at dawn, and a number of skirmishes and minor sieges. 17th Century History

Charles XI’s War The Scanian War between Sweden and Denmark, 1675–1679 By Michael Fredholm von Essen
The Scanian War was bloody and inconclusive, yet established the modern border between Denmark and Sweden and formed the foundation for comprehensive Swedish military reforms.
17th Century History
The book describes and analyses the Scanian War, which was fought from 1675 to 1679 between, on one side, primarily Brandenburg and Denmark–Norway and, on the other, Sweden. Sweden’s experiences in the Scanian War laid the foundation for the first substantial reform of the Swedish army since the Thirty Years’ War. Based on what he had learnt, King Charles XI restructured the Swedish army and established a comprehensive military system that enabled Sweden to repeatedly mobilise trained armies during the even more devastating Great Northern War (1700–1721) which followed a generation later.

Looks at the effects of the Siege of Narva in 1704 and its impact on later conflicts. The siege of the Swedish stronghold Narva by the Russians in 1704 is a very typical yet rather unusual operation of this kind. Its study covers both operational and tactical levels, deals with the peculiarities of siege warfare, and describes the everyday life of the participants. Four years later Narva saw another full scale three months long siege packed with sallies, bombardments, trench combat and ended by general storm – something rare to the period when governors preferred to surrender before assault. 18th century History

The Third Anglo-Dutch War, 1672–1674 By Quintin Barry
This book is a study of the Anglo Dutch war of 1672 to 1674, describing the naval battles which were fought, and the men and ships which fought them. The third Anglo Dutch War, fought between 1672 and 1674, was a war of shameless aggression provoked by England, or rather by King Charles and his court, mainly as a matter of commercial greed. It began, before any declaration of war, with an attack on a Dutch merchant convoy proceeding up-Channel. The war ended with the Allies by no means in unison, and Charles II, obliged by lack of funds to make peace, had nothing to show for a war that should never have been fought.

The Cretan War (1645–1671) The Venetian-Ottoman Struggle in the Mediterranean By Bruno Mugnai
The army and the navy of Venice and the Ottoman Empire during the campaigns fought for the possession of the ‘pearl of the Mediterranean’. A considerable part of the military history of the 17th century is dominated by the conflict between the Christian powers and the Ottoman Empire. The Cretan War between the Ottomans and Venice was a conflict where the logistics organisation and the ability to supply the armies made the difference, similar in many ways to the campaigns in the south-western Pacific during the Second World War. It could be said that the Cretan War was the first conflict of the contemporary age, but fought with the means of the 17th century. 17th Century History

Blood and Broken Glass Northern Ireland’s Violent Countdown Towards Peace 1991–1993 By Ken M. Wharton
A day by day account of the period 1991-93; the fourth decade of Northern Ireland’s troubles. This book recounts in great detail the three bloody years which led up to the Downing Street declaration. It was a time of hope, punctuated by appalling acts of savagery by Republicans and Loyalists alike. The Frizzell’s bombing, the Greysteel massacre, the machine-gun attacks on several Catholic-frequented betting shops are but a few of the outrages carried out. The author refuses to keep quiet as Sinn Fein and its apologists in the British Labour Party attempt to re-write the history of the troubles.

Armies and Enemies of Louis XIV Armies and Uniforms of Western Europe 1688–1714 By Mark Allen
An essential guide book to the armies of the age of Louis XIV and Marlborough. This book originally saw the light of day as a long running series of articles in Wargames Illustrated in the late 1980s. Due to growing interest in the wars of the late 17th century, the author of the original features has compiled them along with new research and made them available again for the first time in thirty years. The book is very much a handbook covering all the major conflicts and battles of the period, it examines how the armies were organised and fought. Each army is covered, with attention paid to specific uniform details, and the colours carried by the individual regiments.

Swiss Regiments in the Service of France 1798–1815 Uniforms, Organization, Campaigns By Stephen Ede-Borrett
A study of the uniforms and organization of the numerous Swiss units that served in the armies of Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. This is the first full-length detailed study of the uniforms, organization, personnel and campaigns of the Swiss units that served in the armies of France from the campaigns of 1798 in Switzerland until the Hundred Days of 1815. The author covers not just the regulation uniforms but also the numerous variations recorded in contemporary documents and plates. Estimates of the number of Swiss who served in the French Army from 1798–1815 vary from fifty to ninety thousand – numbers that makes the Swiss the largest non-French nationality in the Imperial Armies. There have been many studies of these units published in France and Switzerland but this is the first full-length study to be published in England.

Guerra Fantastica The Portuguese Army in the Seven Years War By António Barrento and foreword Charles Esdaile This book deals with a series of military operations that occurred in Portugal in 1762 and 1763, during the Seven Years War, and which have been largely dismissed by the historiography. They are collectively called the Guerra Fantástica, ‘Fantastical War’, given the fact that the military units of the countries involved carried out multiple movements while not engaging in any battle. Fashioning Regulation, Regulating Fashion Uniforms and Dress of the British Army 1800–1808 By Ben Townsend
An investigation into the clothing orders of the British late Georgian army, combined with an analysis of fashion in the same army. This book is the first part of a two-volume analysis of fashion in the late Georgian army, comparing the regulated dress with the ‘modes of the army’ as revealed by contemporary writing and illustrations. Military tailoring inspired a parallel flowering of uniform splendour that continued into the 1830’s and sparked an enduring fascination with military costume that still rages today. These uniforms have gripped the interest and the imagination of the public, and are endlessly revived and recycled through popular culture, on television, film, through books and all of the other new media.

A Light Infantryman with Wellington The Letters of Captain George Ulrich Barlow 52nd and 69th Foot 1808–15 Edited by Gareth Glover
The letters written by George Ulrich Barlow to his father George Hilario Barlow, Governor of Madras, whilst serving with Wellington’s army in the Peninsula and at Waterloo. This series of letters was written by George Ulrich Barlow who saw much action in the period. He transferred to the 69th Foot as a captain and served with them in Belgium at the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo and then remained with the Army of Occupation in France until 1818. His involvement in the fighting and his honest views of some of the famous characters he met during his service are enlightening, including Wellington in Portugal. There are also interesting asides in his correspondence including his father’s difficulties over his governorship of Madras and his brother’s involvement in a major mutiny at the Royal Military College.

An analysis and evaluation of the British army sent to Egypt in 1801 to eject the French Army of the Orient. At the outset of the war with France in 1793, Britain had an army which was badly trained and underfunded. But when it was decided in 1800 that the French Army of the Orient, abandoned by Bonaparte, could be ejected from Egypt, the troops sent to achieve this objective were of a very different quality from those that had been dispatched to Flanders in 1793. This study analyses that force and its commanders, examines the preparations that contributed so notably to its success, and evaluates why it was able to take the fight to a battle-hardened Revolutionary force and defeat it.

Drawing on the work of historians and a wide range of contemporary sources, this book seeks to strip away some of the myths surrounding the Jacobites and the Highland army by looking at what they really wore, what they fought with, and what items they used to show their allegiance to the Prince and the Jacobite cause. Prince Charles Edward Stuart’s army and the Jacobites are examined in detail from their clothes, weapons, and material culture. The Lilies & The Thistle French Troops in the Jacobite ‘45’ By Andrew Bamford
Details the composition, uniforms, and service of the French troops sent to Scotland to support the Jacobite rising of 1745. The Jacobite Rising of 1745 could not have taken place without French support. French ships carried Charles Edward Stuart to Scotland, French gold financed his campaign, and French weapons equipped many of his troops. Yet the actual French military contribution to the campaign was small, and its role is frequently neglected. As with many aspects of the ’45, myths and misconceptions aplenty have arisen about the nature and significance of the French contribution which this book seeks to redress. 18th century History

Hot Skies Over Yemen Volume 2: Aerial Warfare Over Southern Arabian Peninsula, 1994-2017 By Tom Cooper
A richly illustrated and unique point of reference about one segment of modern aerial warfare in Yemen that remains entirely unknown until today. Following the Civil War of 1994, Yemen experienced few years of relative peace. until 2004, when the government opened the first of six campaigns against the movement colloquially known as ‘Houthis’. The Yemeni Air Force – partially reequipped over the previous years – saw intensive involvement in this conflict, but proved insufficient. This book contains over 140 photographs, colour profiles, maps and extensive tables, Hot Skies over Yemen is a richly illustrated and unique point of reference. Aviation

Traces the performance and experiences of the MPLA and Cuban forces at war with South Africans and the third Angolan insurgent group – UNITA. As of 1975, the decades long insurgency in Angola appeared to be short of its conclusion. However, with no less than three major insurgent movements fighting for supremacy, the war went on and then South Africa, USA, the Soviet Union, Zaire and Cuba became involved. Based on extensive research with help of Angolan and Cuban sources, the War of Intervention in Angola provides a unique insight precisely into the topic. Nicaragua, 1961–1990 Volume 1: The Downfall of the Somosa Dictatorship By David Francois
Volume 1 of Nicaragua, 1961–1990 provides an in-depth coverage of military history during the first phase of one of major armed conflicts of Latin America in modern times. In the wake of the US invasion of Nicaragua in 1912, the country came under the rule of the Somoza family, which imposed a brutal, corrupt military dictatorship. A low-scale insurgency of students, supported by peasants and other anti-Somoza elements of the society developed already in the 1960s. By the 1970s, the country became embroiled in a brutal insurgency. Supported by Cuba, a coalition of students, farmers, businessmen, clergy and a small group of Marxists launched a major war in 1978, which resulted in the downfall of the Somozas a year later. 20th Century History

Reveals the whole war fought between Iraq and an international coalition, and offers a refreshing insight into this unique conflict.

Desert Storm reveals the whole war fought between Iraq and an international coalition, from the start of this campaign to its very end.

This daring book challenges all our perceptions on what it means to be an Anglo-Saxon. King Arthur’s Wars describes one of the biggest archaeological finds of our times; yet there is nothing new to see. There are secrets hidden in plain sight. We speak English today, because the Anglo-Saxons took over most of post-Roman Britain. How did that happen? There is little evidence and even less written history. There is, however, a huge amount of speculation. King Arthur’s Wars brings an entirely new approach to the subject. The answers are out there, in the countryside, waiting to be found. Months of field work and map study allow us to understand, for the first time, how the Anglo-Saxons conquered England; county by county and decade by decade.

They Called It Shell Shock Combat Stress in the First World War By Stefanie Linden
A study of how the effects of shell shock transformed the way doctors treated mental illness in the twentieth century. They Called it Shell Shock provides a new perspective on the psychological reactions to the traumatic experiences of combat. In the Great War, soldiers were incapacitated by traumatic disorders at an epidemic scale that surpassed anything known from previous armed conflicts. Drawing upon individual histories from British and German servicemen, this book illustrates the universal suffering of soldiers involved in this conflict and its often devastating consequences for their mental health.

Maquisards et Partisans 1943–1944 By Simon Deleyrolle
An illustrated collection of the various arms and uniforms used by the French Resistance. This Militaria Guide aims to picture, through full colour reconstructions, the many aspects of the French freedom fighter’s silhouette during WWII. The Partisans were indeed very different from one region to another, due to local dress peculiarities and the availability of actual uniforms and equipment. Thus, more than 25 figures on live models are reconstructed for the first time, thanks to the rare items preserved by collectors. Allied personnel parachuted over occupied France to support the Resistance are also featured, including female agents. This guide is a must-have for collectors, modellers and military history enthusiasts. Text in French.

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was a World War II era fighter aircraft produced by the United States between 1941 and 1945. Its primary armament was eight .50-caliber machine guns and in the fighter-bomber ground-attack role it could carry five-inch rockets or a bomb load of 2,500 pounds (1,103 kg). When fully loaded the P-47 weighed up to eight tons (tonnes) making it one of the heaviest fighters of the war. This series of highly illustrated books present detailed scale drawings of aircraft and vehicles, with supporting colour profile artwork. With detailed captions on the history, combat action and development of each machine, each volume is an exceptional reference tool for modelers.

However, the Buffalo was largely obsolete when the United States entered the war, being unstable and overweight.

This book aims to provide a comprehensive history of the ANR since its creation to the end of World War II, focusing not only on its air force but also on ground forces. Therefore, the book draws on a wide variety of different sources.

The German Destroyer Z37 By Carlo Cestra
An authoritative reference to this famous German destroyer which fought in the Battle of the Bay of Biscay. Z37 was a Type 1936A (Mob) destroyer built for the Kriegsmarine during World War II. Completed in 1942, the ship spent much of the time in France before being accidentally rammed in early 1944. The Kriegsmarine decided that Z37 was too badly damaged to repair and so was decommissioned later that year. With groundbreaking 3D imagery, each corner, angle, and dimension of the ship is viewable. With various close-up views, and each 3D image based on actual technical scale drawings and photographs, this makes an exceptional reference tool. Information on the design, development and combat history of each vessel is also included, as well as numerous photographs and 1/350th scale drawings. naval Modelling

Battleship HMS Royal Oak
The Battleship HMS Royal Oak was one of the ‘R’ battleships launched during World War One, and would go on to see action at the Battle of Jutland. By 1939, however, the ship was obsolete with many specifications way below the standard of warships at the time. The Royal Oak was famously sunk just weeks into the war after a German submarine managed to infiltrate the Scapa Flow base. This book provides the reader with several detailed scale drawings which make it ideal for the modeler looking to build this famous warship.

Armor Camouflage & Markings of the British Expeditionary Force, France 1939–1940 examines the tanks of the 1st Army Tank Brigade. For security reasons, photography by British soldiers was strictly forbidden but encouraged on the German side who had captured them. These after-the-battle photographs taken by German soldiers are valuable in examining what the tanks looked like during the 1940 campaign. Included are 157 b/w photographs and 26 full-colour plates. Using war diaries, training pamphlets and other documents, the camouflage and markings of these armoured vehicles are described. A brief description of the three types of tanks used, and the movements of the Brigade during the campaign, are also covered. The photo captions point out the differences in the three types of A11, the modifications made specifically to the A12s and other information, when known, such as the vehicle’s location and tank crew. The colour plates depict the Light Tanks, the A11 and A12 Infantry Tanks, and show the camouflage and markings on several of each type. This book is the best-captioned reference to date, companioned with charts, rare unpublished photographs and colour plates. The book is recommended as a valuable resource for the armour enthusiast and military modeller.

African American Officers in Liberia A Pestiferous Rotation, 1910–1942 By Brian G. Shellum
The story of seventeen African American officers who trained, reorganized, and commanded the Liberian Frontier Force to defend Liberia between 1910 and 1942. The Liberian Frontier Force’s purpose was to defend Liberia from partition by its colonial neighbours and subjugate the local indigenous groups. Shellum explores U.S. foreign policy towards Liberia and the African American diaspora, while detailing the African American military experience in the first half of the twentieth century. Shellum brings to life the story of the African American officers who carried out a dangerous mission in Liberia for an American government that did not treat them as equal citizens even in their homeland, and provides recognition for their important role in preserving the independence of Liberia.

I-35W Bridge Collapse A Survivor’s Account of America’s Crumbling Infrastructure By Kimberly J. Brown
In The I-35W Bridge Collapse, Kimberly J. Brown combines memoir and exposé to provide a full account of the tragedy. “A bridge shouldn’t just fall down,” Senator Amy Klobuchar said after the August 1, 2007, collapse of Minneapolis’s I-35W eight-lane steel arch bridge, which killed thirteen motorists and left a collective wound on the city’s psyche and infrastructure. On her way to soccer practice with a fellow teammate, Kimberly J. Brown experienced the harrowing collapse firsthand. Fortunately, she was one of the survivors. After nearly ten years of research, Brown can now answer the question that had been haunting her ever since the tragedy: what could’ve been done? This is the story of what happened to Brown, how it changed her life and so many others, and how it didn’t have to happen.

Murdering the President Alexander Graham Bell and the Race to Save James Garfield By Fred Rosen
A riveting account of the assassination of President James Garfield and Alexander Graham Bell’s attempts to save his life. Shortly after being elected president of the United States, James Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau. But contrary to what is written in most history books, Garfield didn’t linger and die. He survived. Alexander Graham Bell raced against time to invent the world’s first metal detector to locate the bullet in Garfield’s body so that doctors could safely operate. Rosen proves how depraved indifference to human life – second-degree murder – rather than ineptitude led to Garfield’s drawn-out and painful death.

Dear Old Blighty Britain’s First World War Home Front By Mike Brown
An in-depth look at the experience of the civilian life of Britain throughout the four momentous years of World War 1, all illustrated by contemporary artefacts, photographs and illustrations.
20th Century History May 2018 • 9781781220108 • £9.99 Paperback • 244 x 173mm 96 pages • Illustrated throughout
In the summer of 1914, Britain felt secure that the old order was firmly in place. Britain, through its navy, ruled the waves, and a fair part of the world through its Empire. Yet this security was an illusion; a war of unimaginable scale was just days away. The war would affect every level of British society; first through the urgent need for a massive expansion of the armed forces, drawing in ever-more men from civilian life. This in turn denuded the factories, shops and farms of labour, at a time when industry needed to expand to clothe and supply the armed services, and agriculture needed to fill the shortages of food created by the U-boat assault on our merchant fleet. The armed forces had first call on men, food, and material, so shortages hit the civilian population hardest. Replacement labour was found in women, who began to work in the factories, transport, commerce, and agriculture. Food remained a problem – shortages led to food queues, leading to increasing Government control and eventually rationing. Civilians were also hit by shortages of petrol and clothing, leading to petrol rationing, gas-cars, and ‘standard’ cloth.
In Dear Old Blighty, Mike Brown looks in-depth at the experience of the civilians, men, women and children, of Britain throughout those four momentous years.

General Grant and the Rewriting of History How the Destruction of General William S. Rosecrans Influenced Our Understanding of the Civil War By Frank Varney History’s wholesale acceptance of Grant’s version of events has distorted our assessment of Rosecrans and other officers, and even of the Civil War itself. Grant intentionally tried to control how future generations would remember the Civil War, and in many ways he succeeded. This book aptly demonstrates, however, that blindly accepting historical “truths” without vigorous challenge is a perilous path to understanding real history.
