Clandestine Cold War Operations of the US Army's Elite, 1956–1990 By James Stejskal

SPECIAL FORCES BERLIN Clandestine Cold War Operations of the US Army’s Elite, 1956–1990

JAMES STEJSKAL COLD WAR March 2017 • 9781612004440 • £25.00 Hardback • 229 x 152mm 336 pages • Casemate Publishers

An account of one of the most secretive operations of the Cold War written by a veteran of the unit along with testimonies of his fellow operatives.

CASEMATE

SPECIAL FORCES BERLIN

This book relays the history of a little known and highly classified US Army Special Forces Detachment that was stationed in Berlin, Germany from 1956 to 1990. It came into existence in response to the threat posed by the massive armies of the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies to the nations of Western Europe. US military planners decided they needed a plan to slow the massive Soviet advance they expected when and if a war began. The plan was Special Forces Berlin. The first 40 men who came to Berlin in mid-1956 were soon reinforced by 60 more and these 100 soldiers (and their successors) would stand ready to go to war in a hostile area occupied by nearly one million Warsaw Pact forces until 1990. If war came, some of these men would stay in Berlin to fight the enemy, while others would cross the most heavily defended border in the world and disappear into the countryside to accomplish their tasks behind Soviet lines.

The Detachment were also involved in operations elsewhere, including involvement in the attempted rescue of American hostages from Tehran in 1979. When SF Berlin was disbanded, its files and records were for the most part destroyed or lost. Written by a veteran of the unit, this narrative of the unit’s activities is based on the recollections of the men who served in it, coupled with what little declassified, official documentation is available.

MOTOR BANDITS The Royal Naval Air Service on the Western Front By John Livesey

The dramatic true story of the Royal Navy Air Service’s daring commander Charles Samson, as he and his men create a new type of warfare by breaking all the rules.

MOTOR BANDITS THE ROYAL NAVAL AIR SERVICE ON THE WESTERN FRONT

JOHN LIVESEY

The Royal Navy Air Service started life as a small unit designed to teach naval men to fly. Their daring commander Charles Samson was the first person to fly an aircraft from a moving ship. When war broke out in 1914 the unit was desperate to get in on the action, and set off for Europe with nine planes and 125 men. With too few aircraft, the notion of using armoured cars for patrols caught Samson’s attention, and the unit set to work acquiring armoured vehicles, often even stealing them from other units, which gave them their nickname of ‘Motor Bandits’ or ‘the Motorised Bastards’.

Commander Samson and his Motor Bandits had an impact out of all proportion to the size of the force at their disposal. Combining aviation with armourised vehicles, Samson’s unit were initially involved in patrolling and reconnaissance, before undertaking WORLD WAR 1 other more offensive objectives. They took the fight to Germany by bombing the Zeppelin sheds in Düsseldorf, May 2017 • 9781612004389 • £19.99 assisting the Royal Navy around Antwerp, and helping Hardback • 229 x 152mm to save the Lewis gun from the Germans. They played 232 pages • Casemate UK a key role in the battle of Ypres, where the French and Belgian armies relied heavily on their assistance. At Douai, four of Samson’s cars broke the German encirclement and allowed 25,000 French troops to escape. Samson was fearless, and used whatever method he could to attack the Germans from any and every angle. This book recounts the colourful story of their origins and their extraordinary adventures on the Western Front in the early part of the Great War.

A Mosquito Night Fighter Pilot in WWII By Roger Dunsford with Geoff Coughlin

The remarkable true story of the rise and rise of Joe Singleton, a man who became a hero for shooting down three German planes in thirteen minutes.

THREE IN THIRTEEN

THREE IN THIRTEEN

Joe Singleton was an unlikely hero. A junior manager at a paints and varnish company at the outbreak of war, he was surprised to discover he had a hidden talent for flying. Joe was posted to the rapidly developing world of night fighting. He flew first Defiants then Beaufighters as the technological race hotted up. He found himself in the thick of the very earliest stages of ground controlled interception and airborne radar engagements. But the grind of fruitless searches and patrols only served to highlight the futility of lives lost in training and the inherent dangers of flying at night with relatively primitive equipment. His skills finally began to bear fruit when piloting a Mosquito and he took part in several successful missions. But the pinnacle came on the night of 19th March 1944: scrambled to intercept a big German raid on Hull he located and shot down a Junkers 188, then went on to shoot down two more, all in the space of thirteen dramatic minutes. He and his navigator survived the crash-landing that ensued, and he went on to be feted as a national hero.

Three in Thirteen is a unique sortie-by-sortie account of his journey from bewildered recruit to celebrated expert, illustrated with extracts from Joe’s RAF logbook, and unpublished photographs and illustrations. Roger Dunsford’s extensive experience as an RAF pilot brings a vivid immediacy to Joe’s experiences combined with astute analysis of the planes, the tactics and the events of that fateful night.

The 106th were fresh, green and right in the pathway of the 5th German Army when the Battle of the Bulge began in December 1944. This book covers the history along with the individual stories of the incredible heroism, sacrifice and tenacity of these young Americans in the face of overwhelming odds. From this division 6,800 men were taken prisoner but their story didn't end there. For the ones who miraculously escaped, there was a battle to fight. They would fight debilitating weather conditions more reminiscent of Stalingrad than the Belgian Ardennes. They would fight a determined enemy and superior numbers and despite all adversity they would eventually prevail. Bocage and Breakout: From the beaches to the Falaise Gap By Leo Marriott and Simon Forty

The definitive illustrated account of the Normandy invasion shortly after D-Day.

CASEMATE

THE NORMANDY BATTLEFIELDS

In The Normandy Battlefields: Bocage and Breakout, Leo Marriott and Simon Forty take the story forward as the success of the invasion continued into the Cotentin, with Cherbourg falling on 29 June, before it bogged down in face of determined German defence and the bocage countryside. The three months of war in June–July 1944 were brutal, with losses of frontline troops as heavy as in World War I. The German defence was tenacious, particularly in face of Allied air supremacy. The Allies struggled to get into a position to allow their more mobile forces room for manoeuvre and the fighting was ferocious. When victory came, it came at a cost: 209,672 casualties among the ground forces, including 36,976 killed and 19,221 missing. The Allied air forces lost 16,714 airmen. The corresponding German losses were even more significant: some 450,000 men, of whom 240,000 were killed or wounded. More important to WORLD WAR 2 the Germans were the losses of heavy equipment— tanks, assault guns, artillery, personnel carriers. THE WAR FOR AFRICA

AFRICA

The Angolan Civil War lasted over a quarter of a century, from 1975 to 2002. Beginning as a power struggle between two former liberation movements, the MPLA and UNITA, it became a Cold War struggle with involvement from the Soviet Union, Cuba, South Africa and the USA. This book examines the height of the Cuban-South African fighting in Angola in 1987–88, when 3,000 South African soldiers and about 8,000 UNITA guerrilla fighters fought in alliance against the Cubans and the armed forces of the Marxist MPLA government, a force of over 50,000 men. Bridgland pieced together the course of the war, fought in one of the world’s most remote and wild terrains, by interviewing the South Africans who fought it, and many of their accounts are woven into the narrative. This classic account of a Cold War struggle and its momentous consequences for the participants and across the continent, is released in a new edition with a new preface and epilogue.

From the Ground Up By Niklas Zetterling

Analysis of the German war machine from 1939–41 and how their Blitzkrieg strategy destroyed all opposition before them.

BLITZKRIEG FROM THE GROUND UP

WORLD WAR 2

CASEMATE

BLITZKRIEG

Nik las Zet t er ling

The successes of the German Blitzkrieg in 1939–41 were as surprising as they were swift. Allied decisionmakers wanted to discover the secret to German success quickly, even though only partial, incomplete information was available to them. The false conclusions drawn became myths about the Blitzkrieg that have lingered for decades. It has been argued that German victories in the early part of the war rested less upon newly developed tanks and aircraft and more on German military traditions: rather than creating a new way of war based on new technology, the Germans fitted the new weapons into their existing ideas on warfare. These doctrines focused on independent action, initiative, flexibility, decentralized decision-making and mobility. The conduct of German soldiers, particularly the lowerranking men, on the battlefield was at the core of the concept and German victories rested upon the quality of the small combat units.

May 2017 • 9781612004600 • £25.00 Hardback • 229 x 152mm 288 pages • Casemate UK

This book focuses on the experience of the enlisted men and junior officers in the Blitzkrieg operations in Poland, Norway, Western Europe and Russia. Using accounts previously unpublished in English, military historian Niklas Zetterling explores how they operated, for example how a company commander led his tanks, how a crew worked together inside a tank, and the role of the repair services. The author fits these narratives into a broader perspective to give the reader a better understanding of why the Germans were so successful in 1939–41.

The CASEMATE CLASSIC WAR FICTION series publishes new editions of forgotten classics that perfectly capture their era, starting with the conflict that gave birth to gritty realism in fiction, WWI.

FOREST OF THE HANGED Liviu Rebreanu During the First World War, just behind the eastern front, there was a forest, where Austrians and Hungarians used to hang deserters. To this place came Apostol Bologa, a young Romanian officer eager to serve his country. Born in a Romanian region of Transylvania which was then under Hungarian rule, he naturally joined the Austro-Hungarian army. But soon Romania itself entered the war, and Bologa found himself fighting his own people.

THE WHISTLERS' ROOM Paul Alverdes The Whistlers' Room is the surprisingly gentle, sensitive story of a section in a German hospital where three soldiers try to recover from battle injuries. They are known as the Whistlers, as all were shot in the throat and their breathing results in a sound "like the squeaking of mice". The author vividly captures the strong young men the soldiers used to be and the people they have become. Pointner, whose obstinacy in holding onto an English sniper's cap means he is mistaken for the enemy, is the worst injured of the trio. Kollin dreams that he is cured, and for a brief, heart-breaking moment his breathing appears to be free when he awakes. The precarious balance of life in the hospital shifts when Harry, an English prisoner of war, becomes another whistler. His initial reception by the other patients, and his eventual acceptance into their group, reminds us of what must be so blatant day-in day-out in a hospital: men are all the same regardless of the country they fight for. 9781612004662 ■ April 2016 ■ £7.99 190 x 132 mm ■ Paperback ■ 128 pages • Casemate UK

W. F. Morris Charles Pagan and Dick Baron, who served together in WWI, embark on a walking holiday in the Vosges Mountains in France, in 1930. En route they meet Cecil and his sister Clare who is recovering from the loss of her fiancé during the war. Pagan and Baron pitch camp at a guest house, but the strange behaviour of locals piques their interest in the surroundings: in particular the old battlefield nearby. They express an interest in visiting it and are told by their host in no uncertain terms that it is not the place to go at night. When they discover they have been locked in their bedrooms, the pair lose no time in putting a rope out of the window and shinning down it, intent on exploring the forbidden territory and viewing the apparition Pagan thinks he has glimpsed briefly by moonlight. 9781612004648 ■ April 2016 ■ £8.99 190 x 132 mm ■ Paperback ■ 304 pages • Casemate UK

C ASEMATE SHORT HISTORY SERIES CASEMATE SHORT HISTORY OF BIG GUNS ARTILLERY ON THE BATTLEFIELD This book covers the development and use of artillery over the centuries to its central role in modern warfare. Ever since the first appearance of large-calibre guns in the Middle Ages, gunpowder artillery has had an enormous impact on military strategy. Cannons were initially developed to tackle fortifications, but technology enabled the development of lighter, more manoeuvrable field artillery which could change the outcome of battles. By the 19th century most European armies had artillery, and Napoleon, originally an artillery officer, took its use to a new level. In the late 19th century German industrialist Krupp produced the first steel guns, paving the way for the devastatingly powerful heavy artillery of World War I, while the innovative French soixantequinze was the forerunner of a new generation of field artillery. In WWI the use of artillery literally transformed the landscape, and shaped how armies fought, and by World War II the range of artillery had expanded to include self-propelled guns, and anti-tank and anti-aircraft guns. CASEMATE SHORT HISTORY OF TANKS A CENTURY OF TANK WARFARE Tanks made their first appearance on the battlefield in September 1916 and have captured the public imagination ever since. Other countries scrambled to develop tanks of their own, and by the time war broke out again in 1939, a wide variety of tanks, and tank tactics, had been developed around the world. In World War II tanks were integral to the fighting in almost every theatre, and the war saw the vast tank battles of El Alamein and Kursk. Tank crews were feted for their fortitude and bravery in fighting in such difficult and dangerous conditions. Tank development continued apace during the Cold War and tanks have featured in most modern conflicts. From the slow and clumsy Mark IV, through the terrifying Tiger and nimble Sherman Firefly to the Challenger 2, this book covers the development of tanks, and how they have been used in warfare through the two world wars and beyond. MARKSMEN THROUGH THE AGES The history of marksmen on the battlefield from the Middle Ages – when the most precise shooters have been employed as marksmen or sharpshooters – to the highly advanced weapons technology, sniper training and counter-sniping that exists today. The German states made the first serious use of sharpshooters on the battlefield during the Seven Years War. Some of these talented riflemen were then employed as mercenaries in America, where their tactical in wooded terrain was valued. It looks at the advent of mass-produced high-quality firearms in the 19th century, and traces how the lethal German snipers of World War I terrorised the British trenches, leading to the advancement of sniper technology and training. MASTERS OF THE SKIES Just over a decade after the first successful powered aeroplane flight, fearless pioneers were flying over the battlefields of France in flimsy biplanes. As more military aircraft took to the skies, they were equipped with weapons and their pilots began to develop tactics to take down enemy aviators. In 1915 the term ‘ace' was coined to denote a pilot adept at downing enemy aircraft, and top aces like Albert Ball and the Red Baron became household names. Flying more advanced fighters, top aces would accrue scores of over 100 in the swirling dogfights of WWII. CASEMATE SHORT HISTORY OF TOMMIES THE BRITISH ARMY IN THE TRENCHES British soldiers have been known as Tommies for centuries, but the name is particularly associated with the British soldier in World War I. In 1914, a small professional force of British soldiers crossed the Channel to aid the French. It soon became apparent that the war would be protracted, and a vast drive for volunteer soldiers began. By 1918 the army was transformed, fielding 5.5 million men on the Western Front alone. These Tommies were fighting an entirely new type of war, living and dying in vast trench systems, threatened by death from the air or by gas attack as well as by rifle or bayonet. INSTRUMENTS OF BATTLE The Fighting Drummers and Buglers of the British Army from the Late 17th Century to the Present Day By James Tanner

A thorough examination of the role of drummers and buglers in the British Army throughout history. Examines in detail the role of the British Army’s fighting drummers and buglers, from the foundation of the army to the present day. The origins of the drum and bugle in the Classical Period and the later influence of Islamic armies are examined, leading to the arrival of the drum and fife in early Tudor England. The story proper picks up post-English Civil War and the drum’s period of supremacy through much of the eighteenth century army. There are surprising examples of the use of the bugle in the field through both World Wars and the story is brought up to most recent times and relegation to an almost exclusively ceremonial role. This is set against a background of campaigns, battles, changing tactical methods and the difficult processes of command and control on the battlefield. The story of Yasutsune "Tony" Hirashiki's ten years in Vietnam—beginning when he arrived in 1966 as a young freelancer with a 16mm camera but without a job or the slightest grasp of English and ending in the hectic fall of Saigon in 1975. Vietnam was truly the first “television war,” and cameramen and reporters went to extraordinary lengths to produce the newsreels watched daily in living rooms across America. Hirashaki’s memoir has all the peril, hardship, and close calls of a battle memoir, but it is primarily a story of very real and remarkable people: the soldiers who fought, bled, and died, and the reporters and photographers who recorded their stories. A sensation when it was released in Japan in 2008, it is now available to Englishspeaking readers for the first time. PEARL

A tense and fast-paced account of the development of the conflict between the US and Japan, ultimately resulting in the devastating bombing of Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 which caused large-scale destruction of American forces and led the USA into World War II. Pearl seeks to uncover the real reasons why the leaders of the US failed to pick up the huge threat to their security until it was too late, and why the Japanese felt the compulsion to launch an attack in the first place. Was Roosevelt’s confidence in the safety of America misplaced? Did arrogance on both sides make the war inevitable? Pearl is an excellent exploration of where the culpability lies, as the reader is placed at the heart of the action of the attack on Pearl Harbor that left 2,337 American citizens dead. Many stories of individual heroism and cowardice emerge as essential parts of the Pearl Harbor narrative, as Pearl follows the American and Japanese navies in their fight to protect their nations.

Stories by and about recipients of the Nation’s Highest Awards Edited by Richard J. Rinaldo

COURAGE IN COMBAT

COURAGE IN COMBAT

Courage in Combat tells stories about our military heroes from the Civil War onward. They relate personal accounts and reflections on combat and war from members of the Legion of Valor of the United States of America, Inc. and their friends. The book explores the concept of courage through aspects of the lives, thoughts and actions of this elite group. They are recipients of the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross and the Air Force Cross. Their awards are our nation’s highest military decorations, given to only one in 20,000 combatants. Among them are sergeants and generals as well as corpsmen, civilians, engineers, “grunts,” and paratroopers. There are men and woman, a mess attendant, aviators, spies and POWs, a cavalry scout, candidates for sainthood, and a President of the United States. This book also includes a short history of this unique group, America’s oldest military service organization and an extensive list of its members, past and present.

Richard J. Rinaldo is a retired Army lieutenant colonel, who commanded a rifle company in Vietnam in 1969. He is a graduate of Fordham College and West Point’s History of the Military Art course and he taught Military History at Hofstra University. He was inducted into the Fordham and New York City ROTC Hall of Fame in 2015. His awards include the Distinguished Service Cross, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Meritorious Service Medal with 3 OLC, the Army Achievement Medal, and Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He is National Commander of the Legion of Valor 2016–2017, and lives in Virginia.

RICHARD J. RINALDO

Published in conjunction with the Legion of Valor of the United States of America, this is an anthology of pieces about recipients of the United States’ highest decorations, the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross and the Air Force Cross. The subjects of the stories are both notables and the forgotten, from Karl Marlantes to Jim Webb, to sergeants, generals, and Presidents, to corpsmen, civilians, engineers, spies, engineers and prisoners of war. This book discusses the nature of courage, explores the different ways in which courage is shown through personal stories and reflections, and celebrates the bravery shown by these recipients, most of whom declared they were “just doing their job.”

THE TIGERS OF BASTOGNE

The Battle of the Bulge—when U.S. troops faced Hitler’s last full-fledged counteroffensive in the West, was the largest American battle of the war, involving at least a million men on both sides. However, aspects of the desperate, month-long fight continue to be unknown to the public today. The gallant stand of the 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne has become part of historical and media legend. But how many students of the war realize there was already a U.S. unit holding the town when the paratroopers arrived? And this unit—the 10th Armored Division—continued to play a major role in its defense throughout the German onslaught. In The Tigers of Bastogne, authors King and Collins finally detail the travails of this young armored division, which had only arrived in Europe that fall, yet found itself subject to the full brunt of Germany’s Fifth Panzer Army in the Ardennes. At first overwhelmed, and then falling back to protect the vital crossroads, the 10th Armored was reinforced was ultimately reinforced by the Screaming Eagles, and its men and tanks went on to contribute largely to America’s final victory. The 10th Armored’s divisional motto, “Terrify and Destroy,” was somewhat belied by the onslaught of Nazi panzers that burst across no-man’s-land on December 16. Instead, their nickname, “The Tiger Division,” became fully earned, as they went on the defensive at Bastogne, surrounded in that freezing winter by the Panthers and Tigers of Germany, yet refusing to concede a single inch of ground not earned by the enemy with blood. In countless lonely machines and foxholes, the “Tigers” refused to give another inch, until finally the full force of Patton’s army came to their rescue. General Anthony McAuliffe, of the 101st Airborne (and “Nuts” fame), said, “It seems regrettable to me that Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division didn’t get the

THE BATTLE OF THE BRIDGES

PERATION M ARKET G ARDEN has been recorded as a complete Allied failure in World War II, an overreach that resulted in an entire airborne division being destroyed at its apex. However, within that operation were episodes of heroism on the part of the Allied paratroopers that still remain unsung. On September, 17, 1944, the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, floated down across the Dutch countryside, in the midst of German forces, and proceeded to fight their way to vital bridges in order to enable the Allied offensive to propel forward. The 101st Airborne was behind them; the British 1st Airborne was far advanced. In the 82nd’s sector the crucial conduits needed to be seized. The Germans knew the importance of the bridge over the Waal River at Nijmegen as well as James Gavin and his 82nd troopers did. Thus began a desperate fight for the Americans to seize it, no matter what the cost. The Germans would not give, however, and fought tenaciously in the town while fortifying the bridge. On September 20 Gavin turned his paratroopers into sailors and conducted a deadly daylight amphibious assault in small plywood and canvas craft across the Waal River to secure the north end of the highway bridge in Nijmegen. German machine guns and mortars boiled the water during the crossing, but somehow a number of paratroopers made it to the far bank. Their ferocity thence rolled up the German defenses, and by the end of day the bridge had fallen. This book draws on a plethora of previously unpublished sources to shed new light on the exploits of the “Devils in Baggy Pants” during Market Garden, by Dutch author and historian Frank van Lunteren. A native of Arnhem—the site of “The Bridge too Far”—the author draws on nearly 130 interviews he personally conducted with veterans of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, plus Dutch civilians and British and German soldiers, who here tell their story for the first time.

SLYBIRDS A Photographic Odyssey of the 353rd Fighter Group During the Second World War By Graham Cross

A history of one of the most famous fighter groups in history, the 353rd ‘Slybirds’. The distinctive black and yellow chequered markings of the 353rd Fighter Group, the ‘Slybirds’, made them one of the USAAF ‘Mighty’ 8th Air Force’s most colourful fighter groups. The 353rd participated in all major aerial battles from the 1943 Regensburg and Schweinfurt raids to ‘Big Week’, the attacks on Berlin, and the support of the D-Day landings and Normandy campaign in 1944. They went on to win the Distinguished Unit Citation during the Arnhem operation of September 1944 and after converting to P-51 Mustangs they continued to play a prominent role in the final smashing of the Third Reich from the air. Fighting High Publishing has come together with respected 8th Air Force Historian Graham Cross to tell the story of the ‘Slybirds’. With access to an unparalleled photographic archive, the volume fills a major gap in the history of 8th Fighter Command. A full honour roll is included along with details of all POWs and all confirmed claims by the Group’s air-to-air aces. Packed with nearly 450 photos, the majority previously unpublished, unseen wartime colour photos and detailed captions, this book is a visual and information feast.

BOMBER COMMAND: BATTLE OF BERLIN Failed to Return By Steve Bond, Steve Darlow, Sean Feast, Andy Macdonald, Robert Owen, Nicole Russel and Howard Sandall

A chronicle of the many bombers who risked their lives to attack Berlin in the latter days of WWII. 'Tonight you are going to the Big City. You will have the opportunity to light a fire in the belly of the enemy that will burn his black heart out.’ The message from Commanderin-Chief of RAF Bomber Command Sir Arthur Harris was clear. The airmen of Bomber Command were to fly deep into hostile airspace and bring the war direct to the German Nazi capital Berlin. From the autumn of 1943 to the last days of winter in early 1944, the bomber crews braved the flak, the searchlights, enemy night fighters and extremes of weather, to bombard the ‘black heart’. This book brings together acclaimed Bomber Command historians to tell the story of some of the thousands of airmen who failed to return from operations as part of the Bomber Command Battle of Berlin.

By Jacques R. Pauwels

An alternative history of the First World War that questions everything you thought you knew about the conflict. Historian Jacques Pauwels applies a critical, revisionist lens to the First World War, offering readers a fresh interpretation that challenges mainstream thinking. As Pauwels sees it, war offered benefits to everyone, across class and national borders. For European statesmen, a large-scale war could give their countries new colonial territories, important to growing capitalist economies. For the wealthy and ruling classes, war served as an antidote to social revolution, discouraging international solidarity. And for the working classes themselves, war provided an outlet for years of systemic militarization – quite simply, they were hard-wired to pick up arms, and to do so eagerly. But Europe's elite did not predict many of the war's outcomes, such as social revolution and Communism in Russia. Pauwels has produced an account of the period that challenges readers to rethink their understanding of this key event of 20th century world history.

The story of the 30,000 under-age Canadian youths who fought in WWII. Tells the stories of some of the 30,000 under-age youths – some as young as fourteen – who joined the Canadian Armed Forces in the Second World War. This is the companion volume to the authors' popular 2013 book Old Enough to Fight about boy soldiers in the First World War. They enlisted for a myriad of personal reasons – ranging from the appeal of earning regular pay after the unemployment and poverty of the Depression to the desire to avenge the death of a brother or father killed overseas. Meticulously researched and extensively illustrated with photographs, personal documents and specially commissioned maps, Too Young to Die provides a touching and fascinating perspective on the Canadian experience in the Second World War.

Garde du corps et ami juif de Hitler By Georges Bernage

A biography of the founder of the SA, Emil Maurice, a man who was Hitler’s friend despite his Jewish origin.

WW2 BIOGRAPHY

Of Jewish origin yet a close friend of Adolf Hitler, Emil Maurice was the founder of the SA and the editor of Mein Kampf in the Landsberg prison. Through the very singular destiny of Emil Maurice, this album describes the poorly known but decisive period from 1919 to 1933, covering the DAP debut, the Munich revolution, Landsberg prison, the history of the Stosstrupp and many other historical details. All of these events are documented with the aid of very rare b/w and colour documents and unpublished or little known photos, some from Emil Maurice archives that we have acquired.

THREE DAYS IN HELL 7–9 juin 1944 By Georges Bernage and Frederick Jeanne

An account of the many atrocities that occurred just after D-Day, examined in comprehensive detail. June 8, 1944. The Winnipegs are crushed by a German counter-attack in Putot. Some German soldiers are executed on Hill 102, and some Canadian soldiers are executed in Audrieu and Le Mesnil-Patry. Then, the barbaric attack on Bretteville-l’Orgueilleuse follows later causing widespread destruction in their wake. Who are the people responsible for those actions? For the first time, the mystery is partially unveiled. The three day stretch following D-Day is examined in minute detail in this comprehensive volume, showing just how bloody and terrifying the warfare could be. REGIMENTAL

With many period photographs, objects and weapons that belonged to some of these paratroopers, this work is published in partnership with the Breton Resistance Museum in Saint-Marcel (Morbihan). Journalist and writer, Jean-Charles Stasi is the author of twenty books including several devoted to World War II.

An all-colour book of the SS-Gebirgs-Division in Finland. There are few all-colour books of the Second World War, and even fewer of the Waffen-SS. The SS-Kriegsberichter Mitschke could benefit from this technology, not widespread at the time, for a report of forty photographs showing the SSGebirgs-Division "Nord" on the front in Finland. The Campaigns And Armies Of The Earl Of Essex During The First Civil War, 1642–44 By Chris Scott and Alan Turton

A re-evaluation of the English Civil War general Robert Devereux, combating the idea that he had little military skill. ‘Hey For Old Robin!’ was the cry of the Earl of Essex’s army during the First Civil War as, contrary to modern popular belief, Robert Devereux was well-liked by the men he led. This book fills a gap in the literature of the civil wars – taking up the challenge to write a new history of Essex and his army and examining the often repeated view that he was a cautious dullard with little military skill. This work is of great use to anyone with an interest in our civil wars – including academics, local historians, re-enactors and wargamers.

THE ARMY OF JAMES II, 1685–1688 The Birth Of The British Army By Stephen Ede-Borrett

A book about the extraordinary army reforms undertaken in the three years of his reign. Between James’ accession in February 1685 and flight in December 1688, the British Armies increased fourfold. In 1689, the new King – William III – kept James’ army reforms in place and, within a few years, it was to become the army which led the victories at Blenheim and elsewhere. It has been said that amongst William’s reasons for accepting the British Crowns was a fear that the British Army would serve in alliance with Louis XIV against him; despite this, James’ part in the creation of the British Army is often deliberately overlooked or ignored. This book looks at the creation of the enlarged armies of England, Scotland and Ireland; their uniforms and flags, organisation and weapons; their drill and their strength; their pay and their staff. Researched primarily from contemporary documents and manuscripts – this book will restore the legacy of James II’s forgotten army reforms.

A comprehensive guide to all aspects of the Bavarian Army during the Thirty Years War. The Bavarian Army has been overshadowed by those of Gustavus Adolphus’ and Wallenstein’s armies, but it was one of only a few armies to have fought throughout the Thirty Years War – first as part of the Catholic League and then as an independent army after the Peace of Prague. This book covers not only the Bavarian Army’s organisation, but also has chapters on recruitment, officers, clothing, weaponry, pay and rations of a soldier during the Thirty Years War. PETER THE GREAT HUMBLED The Russo-Ottoman War Of 1711 By Nicholas Dorrell

An exploration of the little-known defeat of Peter the Great by the Ottoman Empire in 1711.

18TH CENTURY HISTORY

In 1711, Peter the Great – the Tsar of Russia – led a large army of veterans from Poltava and his other Great Northern War victories into the Balkans. He aimed to humble the Ottomans in the same way he had the Swedes a few years before. Victory would secure useful allies in the Balkans, cement Russia’s ‘Great Power’ status and offer Peter the opportunity to finally gain control over the Swedish King, Charles XII – thus completing his victory over Sweden. But the Ottomans proved to be the humbling of Peter the Great. This book looks at the causes of this little-known war and its course using contemporary and modern sources to determine why the Ottomans were victorious.

The Transvaal Campaign, 1880–1881 By John Laband

A fresh look at the Battle of Majuba Hill which consigned the British to a crushing defeat by the Boers in South Africa.

19TH CENTURY HISTORY

The ignominious rout of a British force at the Battle of Majuba on 27 February 1881 – and the death of its commander, Major General Sir George Pomeroy-Colley – was the culminating British disaster in the humiliating Transvaal campaign of 1880–1881 in South Africa. For the victorious Boers, who were rebelling against the British annexation of their republic in 1877, Majuba became the symbol of Afrikaner resistance against British imperialism. Based on both British and Boer archival and contemporary sources, this balanced and fresh appraisal of Majuba situates it in the closely interlocked operational and political contexts of the Transvaal campaign.

THE BRITISH CAMPAIGN IN ABYSSINIA, 1867–1868 By Christopher Brice

An analysis of the now largely forgotten campaign undertaken by the British to invade Abyssinia. The Abyssinian campaign of 1867–1868 was a remarkable – and now largely forgotten – military undertaking of the Victorian era. The expedition demonstrated the power and ‘reach’ of the British Empire – and no other nation at that time could have considered (let alone undertaken) such an operation. That this campaign was successful owed much not only to British power, resources and technology, but also the remarkable leadership of Lieutenant General Sir Robert Napier – later Field Marshal and 1st Baron Napier of Magdala.

In a new compendium of original research by an impressive array of established and up-and-coming scholars, Gallipoli: The Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 1915–16 explores a wide variety of aspects of the Allied military effort to force a passage through the Dardanelles Straits and eliminate Ottoman Turkey from its Central Powers alliance. THE LANDING AT THE DAWN Dissecting A Legend – The Landing At Anzac, Gallipoli, 25 April 1915 By James Hurst

Re-examining the ANZAC landing of the 25 April 1915 with fresh and up to date evidence and perspective. The Gallipoli landing of 25 April 1915 is arguably Australia’s best known battle. The year 2015 – the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign – was marked by great publicity and the release of many books, articles, films and documentaries. Despite this attention, the landing is still a poorly understood battle, with the historiography coloured by a century of misinformation, assumption, folklore and legend. This book re-examines and reconstructs the ANZAC landing. This book has been described as a ‘major contribution’ that will change the way people view this historic battle, and is the most up-to-date work – and the most comprehensive study – on the subject since Bean’s major work of 1921.

The use of oil-fuelled aircraft, tanks, motor vehicles – and especially warships – increased greatly during the war. Britain and its allies found themselves in an oil crisis in 1917, but it was overcome (with difficulty) and the Allies’ greater oil resources – mostly supplied by the USA – contributed to their victory. One of the most legendary figures in British history is seen through the eyes of one of his subordinate, William Hay, in this fascinating memoir. William Hay had a varied and exciting military career during the later years of the Napoleonic Wars, which took him to the Peninsula, to Waterloo and, after 1815, to Canada. His memoirs detail every military adventure he went on right up until the decisive battle at Waterloo. FAR DISTANT SHIPS The Blockade Of Brest 1793–1815 By Quintin Barry

A revealing look at the British naval strategies employed in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Throughout the drawn-out war at sea during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, it was a cardinal principle of British naval strategy to blockade the port of Brest – the largest and most important of the French naval bases that threatened the security of the British Isles. Naval historian A.T. Mahan memorably summed up the Royal Navy’s contribution to the ultimate defeat of Napoleon when he wrote: ‘Those far distant, stormbeaten ships, upon which the Grand Army never looked, stood between it and the domination of the world’. Drawing on the official and personal correspondence of those involved, this book traces the development of British naval strategy, as well as describing the crucial encounters between the rival fleets and the single-ship actions, which provided the press with a constant flow of news stories for its readers.

The Army Of The Dutch Republic, 1713–1772, Part I: Infantry By Marc Geerdink-Schaftenaar

The undiscovered story of the Dutch Republic’s military organization in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Dutch Republic was one of the great European powers during the 17th and 18th centuries. Generally, the Dutch Republic was considered to have lost that status after the 1713 Peace of Utrecht. However, when the Republic entered the War of Austrian Succession in 1740, it was able to field an army of more than 80,000 men, which soon expanded to 110,000. This book focuses on the uniforms and organisation of that army, from 1713 until the reforms of 1772. The army of the Dutch Republic is a subject that sounds familiar, but is yet greatly undiscovered. Historical sources – be it surviving items of uniform, or paintings and prints – are unfortunately scarce. This study brings to light much material previously unseen.

GLORIES TO USELESS HEROISM The American Journals Of Comte Maurès De Malartic, 1755–1760 Edited by William Raffle

The thrilling memoirs of Maurès de Malartic who fought in colonial conflicts for France in the eighteenth century. These are the facts and notes taken by a soldier on campaign, written daily, sometimes in a tent, sometimes in a canoe, today in the presence of the enemy, tomorrow in conference with a tribe of savages’. This description is taken from the original French edition of the journal of Comte Maurès de Malartic. Malartic, major of the Régiment de Béarn, sailed to the North American colony of New France in 1755, as France responded to British forces sent out to Virginia the same year. As war escalated, he remained for the next six years and was present at all the major engagements in what came to be known as the ‘French and Indian War’, or ‘Seven Years War’. Available for the first time in English, Malartic’s recollections illuminate the great efforts undertaken by the French Army in America to preserve New France.

THE IRAN- IRAQ WAR Volume 3: Iraq's Triumph By Tom Cooper, E.R. Hooton and Farzin Nadimi

The third book in the game-changing series by Helion, depicting the Iraqi offensive that would force Iran to sue for peace. There have been many books on the Iran-Iraq War, but this is the first detailed military history using materials from both sides, as well as materials obtained from US Intelligence circles and British Governmental archives. This third volume covers the last two years of the war on the Southern Front, where Iranians made their last supreme effort to break through Iraqi lines during the winter of 1986–1987. Iraqi defences just about held: for a year, there was an ominous silence, but then Iraq launched a series of devastating blows that recovered the Faw Peninsula, pulverised weaklyoccupied Iranian positions and drove the front lines back to the international border. Iran was left with no option but to sue for peace.

THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR Volume 4: The Forgotten Fronts By Tom Cooper, E.R. Hooton and Farzin Nadimi

The final part in the astonishing Iran-Iraq War series depicting the very latter stages of the conflict. The Iran-Iraq War was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century and accidentally created the current nightmare of Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. This provides a unique insight into a war which began through miscalculation and rapidly escalated into the longest conventional conflict in the post-Second World War era. Volume 4 in this mini-series covers the warfare between Iran and Iraq on the Central and Northern Fronts. Difficult terrain made it problematic for either side to assemble overwhelming superiority. Following initial Iraqi attacks that seized some territory, the Iranians began gradually nibbling back until achieving some success in the centre, in 1982 and the final campaign of the war saw Iraq-supported Iranian émigrés launching a spectacular, but also a swiftly-crushed, invasion of their homeland.

The Fall Of South Vietnam By Albert Grandolini

The little-known account of the North Vietnamese invading the south after the Americans had vacated the country. After 27 years of conflict, it seemed that peace would finally settle on the Indochina Peninsula on 27 January 1973 with the signing of a peace accord in Paris. The North Vietnamese had previously launched their greatest offensive against South Vietnam, but fell short of their objectives: the destruction of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and the destruction of the Saigon regime. They now proposed, in exchange for the release of the US prisoners of war, the withdrawal of the remaining American forces in Vietnam. Far from feeling committed by the agreement, the Hanoi leadership prepared the next round: the ultimate conquest of South Vietnam. This volume examines the last episode of the US’ gradual withdrawal, as well as the implementation of part of the peace accords.

THE PARAS Portugal’s First Elite Force in Africa, 1961–1974 By John P. Cann

A fascinating look at the Portuguese ‘Paras’ to analyse how they were trained, their tactics and their imaginative strategies. Portuguese paratroopers (or ‘paras’) began as a stepchild of the army and found a home in the Portuguese Air Force in 1955. Initially, the post-World War Two Portuguese Army seemed to have had mixed emotions about the need for elite, special-purpose forces that operated in small units. Nevertheless, in a ‘war of the weak’ in which insurgents avoid government strengths and exploit its vulnerabilities using agility and imagination, such small, crack units are particularly well suited to counterinsurgency operations. This book tells the paras’ story, as researched from Portuguese sources. It details how they were formed and trained, and how they developed their imaginative, effective and feared tactics – applying them in operations to protect the population from insurgent predations and destroy a vicious enemy.

BANDIT MENTALITY Hunting Insurgents In The Rhodesian Bush War, A Memoir By Lindsay O’Brien

The account of Lindsay ‘Kiwi’ O’Brien’s Bush War service, where he diced with danger in this thrilling read. Captures Lindsay ‘Kiwi’ O’Brien’s Bush War service from 1976–1980 at the coalface of the Rhodesian conflict. He served across the country as a section leader and a troop commander before joining the UANC political armies as a trainer and advisor. He specialized in the ‘grunt’ work inside Rhodesia, with none of the flamboyant helicopter or cross-border raids carried out by the army. O’Brien moved from the police to working with the initial UANC deployment in the Zambezi Valley, where the poorly-trained recruits were delivered into the terrorist lair. O’Brien’s account is a foreign-born perspective from a junior commander uninterested in promotion and the wrangling of upper command. He was decorated and wounded three times. FOUR FLAGS, THE ODYSSEY OF A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER, PART 2 Rhodesian Security Forces 1979–80, South African Defence Force 1981–83 By David Barr

Dave Barr was addicted to action and served in Vietnam, as well as the Israeli army. These are his colourful memoirs. Dave Barr knew from the age of 12 that he wanted to be a marine. At 17 he joined the Marines before shipping out to Vietnam. This was his dream come true – flying as a helicopter gunner – and he ended the war with an impressive 57 Air Medals: one Air Medal for every 20 combat missions. After leaving the Marines, like many veterans, Dave found it hard to hold down a good job and stay out of trouble. It was then that he read about Israel where he soon travelled to. He was inducted into the Israeli Army and then the Paratroopers, where the training was difficult – involving long, tough marches, as well as learning Hebrew. This is the second volume of Dave’s memoirs. Just as rich and colourful an account as the first instalment, the book portrays a professional soldier’s view of the ‘sharp end’ of war. Volume 2: The War In Italy And The Interwar Years 1942–1961 By Willem Steenkamp

The second volume of Willem Steenkamp’s landmark series on the formation of the South African armed forces. Volume 2 of The Black Beret picks up where the previous volume left off – describing the bowing out of the South African Tank Corps, the formation of 6th South African Armoured Division and its subsequent campaign in Italy. Its exploits in Italy are recounted in detail, from its blooding at Cassino; the pursuit to Rome; the hard fight to breach the Gothic Line; and through to final victory. The final part of the book recounts the events of 1945–1961 – including the introduction of the Centurion tank. This is an important and overlooked story – one told by Willem Steenkamp in a rich and unique style – drawing on a significant number of sources and ably supported by many photographs and maps.

DIRTY WAR Rhodesia and Chemical Biological Warfare 1975–1980 By Glenn Cross

The definitive study of the Rhodesian Armed Forces’ use of chemical weapons. Dirty War is the first comprehensive look at Rhodesia’s top secret use of chemical and biological weapons (CBW) during their long counterinsurgency against native African nationalists. Having declared its Independence from Great Britain in 1965, the government almost immediately faced a growing threat. In the midst of this long, terrible conflict, Rhodesia resorted to chemical and biological weapons against an elusive guerrilla adversary – using a small team of scientists and their students to produce the lethal agents. Dirty War is the culmination of nearly two decades of painstaking research and interviews of dozens of former Rhodesian officers and also draws on the handful of remaining classified Rhodesian documents that tell the story of the CBW program.

LÜTZEN AND BAUTZEN Napoleon's Spring Campaign Of 1813 By George Nafziger

Uncovers the secrets of Napoleon’s campaign in Germany with new images and maps. One army lost in the Russian winter, Napoleon raised another to keep his grip on Europe. A tired Russian Army and a raw Prussian force marched to meet him. Lützen and Bautzen is a detailed and masterful study of a misunderstood and little covered campaign, yet it was a war between titans, as Napoleon led his conscripts to crush a foe worthy to face him. From the great battles of Lützen and Bautzen to the skirmishes with marauding Cossacks, George Nafziger follows the complete campaign in Germany from top to bottom, with a wealth of detail. A great researcher, the author uncovers the secrets of one of the greatest of Napoleonic campaigns. This new edition incorporates a new set of images and newly-commissioned maps.

IMPERIAL BAYONETS Tactics Of The Napoleonic Battery, Battalion And Brigade As Found In Contemporary Regulations (New Edition) By George Nafziger

Examines the manoeuvrings, strategies and tactics of Napoleonic warfare from 1792 to 1815. Imperial Bayonets examines the manoeuvring systems of the French, Prussians, Russians, Austrians and British from 1792 to 1815. It studies infantry manoeuvres and firepower, cavalry manoeuvres and artillery – and it is the definitive work on Napoleonic tactics, and a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the fundamentals of period tactics. It provides not only a discussion of every major manoeuvre of the five major power, but does time and motion studies of how long it would take to execute those manoeuvres and compares them to the other nations. It covers infantry and cavalry manoeuvres on this level, as well as undertaking an analysis of both musketry effectiveness and artillery effectiveness – providing curves that demonstrate the effectiveness of both. It also covers brigade manoeuvres and army marches.

British And Commonwealth Military Intervention In The Russian Civil War, 1918–20 By Damien Wright

The first ever comprehensive history of the British War against the Soviets after the First World War. After three years of great loss and suffering on the Eastern Front, Imperial Russia was in crisis and on the verge of revolution. In November 1917, Lenin’s Bolsheviks seized power, signed a peace treaty with the Central Powers and brutally murdered Tsar Nicholas (British King George’s first cousin) and his children so there could be no return to the Old Order. As Russia fractured into loyalist ‘White’ and revolutionary ‘Red’ factions, the British Government became increasingly drawn into the escalating Russian Civil War – actively pursuing an undeclared war against the Bolsheviks on a number of fronts in support of British-trained and equipped ‘White Russian’ Allies. At the height of British military intervention in mid-1919, British troops were fighting the Soviets far into the Russian interior in the Baltic, North Russia, Siberia, Caspian and Crimea simultaneously. After the withdrawal of RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR all British forces in mid-1920, the British Government attempted to cover up its military involvement in Russia by classifying all official documents. By the time files March 2017 • 9781911512103 • £29.95 Hardback • 245mm x 170mm • 504 pages relating to the campaign were quietly released decades 8 colour photos, 198 b/w photos, 8 maps, 7 tabulat later, there was little public interest. Few people in Britain today know that their nation ever fought a war against the Soviet Union. The culmination of more than 15 years of painstaking and exhaustive research – with access to many previously classified official documents, unpublished diaries, manuscripts and personal accounts – author Damien Wright has written the first comprehensive campaign history of British and Commonwealth military intervention in the Russian Civil War 1918–1920.

BEST LOVE TO ALL The Letters And Diaries Of Captain Eric RigbyJones, Mc And Bar And His Experiences As A Young Officer With The Liverpool Pals On The Western Front In 1917 And 1918 By John Rigby-Jones

An account of the heroic Eric Rigby-Jones’ time in the Liverpool Pals, highlighting the comradeship that held the men together. Eric Rigby-Jones is one of the many unsung heroes of the war – and were it not for his own account, his bravery would now be forgotten. He was awarded the Military Cross and Bar for his actions on the first and last days of the spring offensive. Invalided home, he was presented with his medals by the King at Buckingham Palace a week after his 21st birthday. The book is well-researched and draws heavily on battalion war diaries and other memoirs. Unlike many books based on personal diaries, it sets Eric’s own detailed, vivid, and often humorous accounts within their broader military, political and social context, as well as highlighting the close ties that bound the officers and men of the Liverpool Pals.

PASSCHENDAELE 103 Days In Hell By Alexandra Churchill, with Andrew Holmes and Jonathan Dyer

A touching tribute to those who died, compiled from 103 personal stories with original portraits and photography. 2017 marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the Third Battle of Ypres. Passchendaele: 103 Days in Hell explains this pivotal engagement using 103 personal stories of men who fought in it. Utilising a unique method that draws extensively on both official military records and work with the families of their chosen subjects, the authors paint a vivid picture of a battle that has become synonymous with the horror and tragedy of the Western Front and how it affected the men who took part in it. The book is beautifully presented with portraits, original and modern photography of the battlefield and of Commonwealth War Graves sites. This – combined with an imaginative, balanced selection of voices from both sides of no man’s land – unite to make a worthy tribute to own for the centenary of Passchendaele.

Critically examines the role of the 6th Royal Irish Rifles during the Gallipoli campaign with some remarkable new evidence.

WORLD WAR 1

Never Retire is the powerful story of the men who joined the 6th Royal Irish Rifles in August 1914 to fight against Germany – and instead, found themselves fighting the armies of the Ottoman Empire at Gallipoli for almost exactly a year. Using new evidence and carefully researched original sources, this is the first book to critically examine the wartime experience of an early 10th (Irish) Division battalion in not only painstaking detail, but also with great sympathy – the story of just one harrowing year of the Great War and how nearly a thousand men fought, died or survived their experience.

Volume 3 carries the story of the XIV Reserve Corps through the momentous Battle of the Somme and into 1917 – a period of transition for the German Army. DUTY NOBLY DONE The South Wales Borderers At Gallipoli 1915 By Rodney Ashwood

A dramatic account of the South Wales Borderers during the disastrous Gallipoli campaign. While the main emphasis of the Great War was on the Western Front of France and Belgium, the British Army also took part in Gallipoli between April 1915 and January 1916. By December 1914, the war on the Western Front had ground to a halt in a stalemate of trench warfare, and Winston Churchill proposed a strategy to take Turkey out of the war. BULLETS, BOMBS AND POISON GAS Supplying The Troops On The Western Front 1914–1918, Documentary Sources By David Rogers

This fascinating book explains how the army were able to supply the soldiers with bullets, mortars and fuel to continue the fight. Soldiers in the trenches were issued with four bullets a day, unless they were either snipers or manned a machine gun. This does not seem like a lot of bullets; however, four bullets a day is 28 per week – therefore, a million soldiers need 28 million bullets per week. Supplying the troops was further complicated by the need to ensure that the many and varied shells were available for the howitzers, mortars and other artillery. Furthermore, there was a need for essential supplies of a whole manner of other materials – including rations for the troops and food for the many horses. Servicing this supply chain was a complex business and this book explains how it was achieved.

Sky Pilot To The Glider Pilots Of Arnhem By Mike Vockins A revealing personal story featuring a hitherto-unpublished and new eyewitness account of the Battle of Arnhem. New, hitherto unseen, first-hand accounts of the Battle of Arnhem – the heroic Allied military operation known as ‘Market Garden’ – become rarer as time passes. This book is the story of a choirboy who became a country parson, and who then took part in Operation ‘Market Garden’ as chaplain to the men of the Glider Pilot Regiment. When he left home, ‘Chig’ – Rowland Chignell (later The Reverend Prebendary Chignell) – wrote often to his father. Remarkably, his father kept those letters, which when viewed today provide almost a social history of wartime rural life. ‘Dig for Victory’, the establishment of a pig club and keeping of hens are on the agenda – and the difficulty of obtaining petrol and tyres is noted. These letters are a vital historical document to the culture of a community that no longer exists.

New and previously unknown accounts of the Eastern Front in Latvia 1944–45. While the eyes of the world were on Hitler’s bunker, more than half a million men fought six cataclysmic battles along a front line in Western Latvia known as the ‘Courland Pocket’. He meets veterans who fought in the Latvian Legion, former partisans and a refugee who fled the Soviet advance to later become president. With detailed maps and expert contributions, rare newspaper archives, photographs from private collections and diary extracts translated into English from Latvian, German and Russian, the author assembles a ghastly picture of death and desperation in the story of a nation both gripped by war – and at war with itself.

Past and Present, Volume 2 Edited by Grazia Prontera, Wolfgang Aschauer, John Buckley, Helga Embachler and Albert Albert

An insight into how children experience military conflicts and how they are influenced by their aftermath. The amount of international research on children and war has continually increased in recent years. Simultaneously, there has been growing public interest in how children experience military conflicts and how their lives have been affected by war and its aftermath. In light of the many brutal post-colonialist civil wars or ‘new wars’ – especially in Africa and Asia – child soldiers have, in particular, gained increased attention. In this volume, scholars from different academic disciplines and representatives of government and non-governmental institutions present a selection of studies in this sensitive subject from different angles – and in various methodological ways.

Irish Republicanism, like its bloodthirsty Loyalist equivalent, bred and nurtured men and women of evil: psychopaths who killed without compunction or thought – yet at the same time, some complain about a ‘shoot to kill’ policy (ignoring civil rights and the so-called ‘rule of law’). These same concepts were conveniently overlooked by the terrorists of the IRA/ INLA and the rest. This book picks up from where Volume 1 left off and describes and analyses the major incidents and stories from the Troubles between the years 1988 and 1990, as Operation ‘Banner’ unfolded and Irish Republicanism and Northern Irish Loyalism continued to make the country into a bloody battlefield, where – quite literally – no-one was safe and where violence touched virtually every household in Ulster.

PROJECT EAGLE The American Christians of North Korea in World War II By Robert S. Kim

The remarkable story of the invasion of Korea in August 1945 led by the Americaninspired Korean liberation movement. In August 1945, an army of Koreans exiled in China was poised to liberate their country from forty years of colonization by Imperial Japan. This army, under American command, was the product of the first alliance between the United States and Korea, made by OSS and a Korean government in exile during the Second World War. Called Project Eagle, it united Americans with a Korean liberation movement led mostly by Korean Christians who had been inspired by American ideals of freedom and democracy. Today, seventy years later, both Project Eagle and the collaboration between Koreans and Americans that made Korea's liberation possible are long forgotten. For the first time, this book tells the story of this special relationship through historical events of the fall and resurrection of Korea from 1876 to 1947.

STRUGGLE FOR IRAQ A View from the Ground Up By Thomas M. Renahan

A revealing insight into the attempts of the American army to promote democracy and defeat corruption in Iraq. Iraq has been an ongoing topic for the United States and the world, never more so than with recent ISIS attacks. In 2003 an American civilian named Thomas Renahan arrived just two days before the capture of Saddam Hussein. He experienced Baghdad during the darkest days of sectarian violence. While working with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Kurdish Regional Government, he spearheaded three civilian projects to promote democracy, fight corruption, and help transform the country. Struggle for Iraq is Renahan's personal story. It also details the struggles of both American civilians and the Iraqi people during this turbulent time.

NANOWEAPONS A Growing Threat to Humanity By Louis A. Del Monte

A complete study of the use of Nanoweapons and what may be in store for their future. Most people believe an asteroid or volcanic eruption will be the cause of humanity's eventual extinction. A recent study by Oxford, however, proclaims that military weaponry — specifically nanoweapons — could render humanity extinct this very century. With dimensions one-thousandth the diameter of a single strand of human hair, this technology is an entirely new class of weaponry. Del Monte traces the emergence of nanoweaponry, discussing the nanoweapons currently in or close to development such as the mini-nuke, which weighs about five pounds and offers the devastation of 100 tons of TNT with virtually no radioactive fallout, and offers concrete recommendations to control the proliferation of nanoweapons and avoid human annihilation. Most importantly, Nanoweapons addresses the question, will it be possible to develop, deploy, and use nanoweapons in warfare without rendering humanity extinct?

Fighting the Media War in Iraq By Tom Basile

The personal account of Tom Basile’s time as senior press adviser to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq and his reasons for the communication failures in the conflict. Like the War on Terror, the Media War rages on. More than ever, America's ability to fight and win against ISIS requires that we understand how to best communicate about war in the digital age. Tough Sell: Fighting the Media War in Iraq takes readers on a behind-the-scenes rollercoaster ride through Tom Basile's time as senior press advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq during the War on Terror as he guides readers behind the walls of the coalition and across the war-torn nation of Iraq as his mission becomes more deadly and less popular at home. The coalition wasn't merely engaged in a fight to build a more tolerant, participatory society against incredible odds. It was also in a constant clash with forces that affected public perception about the mission. As real progress was made by civilians, the military, and Iraqis, negative reporting and missteps by the Bush administration made a tough sell to the American public even tougher. Basile critiques the media's reporting and assesses the Bush administration's home front communications strategy to argue that if policy makers do not effectively articulate policy, manage their message strategy, and counter misinformation, they will soon find themselves unable to execute policy, placing America and freedom at great risk. Our failure to win the media and communications war in Iraq has adversely affected our response as a nation against ISIS and its affiliates. For the first time, Tough Sell blends Basile's intensely personal story with real lessons from an operational and communications standpoint to help America combat extremism.

American Warrior By Arthur Herman

The new, definitive life of General Douglas MacArthur from Pulitzer Prize finalist Arthur Herman. Prophet or anachronism? Romantic hero or vain mountebank? MacArthur is an American icon—and fashioned himself as such. Now, more than half a century after his death, Arthur Herman finds new sources and delivers a biography of MacArthur that peels back the layers of myth, both pro and con, and exposes the marrow of the man beneath. Douglas MacArthur’s life spanned the emergence of the American army as a global fighting force. Its history is to a great degree his story, from his early heroism on the battlefields of World War I, to his command of the Pacific in World War II, to his contentious leadership in the Korean War. More than any previous biographer, Herman shows how MacArthur’s strategic vision helped shape several decades of U.S. foreign policy—in war and in peace. CRIME IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR Spivs, Scoundrels, Rogues and Worse By Penny Legg

This landmark book on crimes committed during the war is a harrowing account of one of the truly dark aspects of the Home Front. At a time of national emergency, the average person could be forgiven for thinking that crime rates would go down as everyone tried to help the war effort. However, the reality was that criminals saw the war as an opportunity to exploit the emergency conditions and those with a previously unblemished reputation found themselves tempted off the straight and narrow. Heavily illustrated with both contemporary and modern photographs Penny Legg takes you back to some of the most infamous wartime crimes such as the blackout ripper, the bath chair murderer and the last person to be prosecuted in Britain for witchcraft. She also delves into the murky world of Spivs, Gangs, prostitutes and Robbers. Penny Legg shows how and why crime was committed during the Second World War and what became of those who strayed into the underworld.

TRUTH MASSACRED The Battle at Fort Pillow, Tennessee, April 12, 1864 By James Moshier

The harrowing history of the infamous Fort Pillow Massacre during the Civil War where Confederate troops shot black Union soldiers. By Civil War standards, the day-long Battle of Fort Pillow, Tennessee (April 12, 1864) was a rather small affair, and yet it is one of the most debated and polarizing events of the entire war. Its infamy rests in what history has concluded was the wholesale massacre of the United States Colored Troops (U.S.C.T.) defending the fort. Author James Moshier’s Truth Massacred: The Battle at Fort Pillow, Tennessee, April 12, 1864, challenges this traditional belief and reaches some stunning conclusions. AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

A new edition of the award-winning yet long out of print book of the Iron Brigade’s legendary exploits at Gettysburg.

AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

The storied Iron Brigade carved out a unique reputation during the Civil War. Its men fought on many hard fields, but they performed their most legendary exploits just outside a small Pennsylvania town called Gettysburg on the first day of July in 1863. There were many heroic actions that morning and afternoon, but the fight along an unfinished deep scar in the ground north of the Chambersburg Pike was one never forgotten, and is the subject of Lance J. ‘A FAILED POLITICAL ENTITY’ Charles Haughey and the Northern Ireland Question, 1945–1992 By Stephen Kelly, with a foreword by Vincent Browne

Stephen Kelly uncovers the complex and stunning motives that underlie Charlie Haughey’s fervent attitude towards the political and sectarian violence that was raging across the border in Northern Ireland.

IRISH HISTORY

Charles Haughey maintained one of the most controversial and brilliant careers in the history of Irish politics, but for every stage in his mounting success there was one issue that complicated, and almost devastated, his ambitions to lead Irish politics: Northern Ireland. In A Failed Political Entity Stephen Kelly uncovers the complex and stunning motives that underlie Haughey’s fervent attitude towards the political and sectarian violence that was raging across the border.

EMMET DALTON Somme Soldier, Irish General, Film Pioneer By Sean Boyne

Biography of Emmet Dalton, a colossus of twentieth century Irish history who lived an extraordinary life as soldier, revolutionary, political activist and pioneering filmmaker. This is the first-ever biography of Emmet Dalton, an American-born Dubliner, Home Ruler and later Republican, whose extraordinary military career as a British officer, IRA leader and General in the Free State army brought him from Flanders to Beal na Bláth. In his expansive biography, Sean Boyne vividly portrays Dalton’s experiences and the vital role he played in the politics and wars that created the independent Irish state. An attractive and high-achieving figure in Irish life in war and peace, Dalton’s heroism allowed him to live his many lives to the full, and this compelling biography does justice to a figure who will captivate all those interested in modern Irish history and the birth of the state.

THE SEVEN SIGNATORIES A Genealogical History of the Men Who Signed the Proclamation of the Irish Republic By Paul Gorry

The family histories of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, uncovering a previously unexplored past

IRISH HISTORY

Proclamation of the Irish Republic is the most significant document in Irish history. The Family Histories of the Seven Signatories is an indispensable genealogical history that uncovers the disparate lives that came together through the will for Irish independence. Thomas Clarke and James Connolly were born in the USA, their family having been uprooted by the Famine; Thomas MacDonagh and Patrick Pearse, alternatively, had immediate English forebears. The signatories’ pasts from before they were born were an essential component in determining their ideas – each firmly their own – of an Irish republic.
