Top of the class! The best foodservice own-brand products in blind taste tests
ash & Carry Management, in partnership with the Craft Guild of Chefs, announced the winners of the 2019 CCM Chefs’ Own-Brand Awards at a prestigious lunch at Westminster Kingsway College, London, earlier this month. The hotly-contested awards – now in their second year – recognise the top foodservice own-brand products in the wholesale industry. Guests at the event enjoyed a three-course lunch expertly prepared by chefs of the future and served by waiting staff – all in training at the college. The judging panel consisted of Andrew Green, chief executive of the Craft Guild of Chefs – the leading chefs’ association in the UK; Matt Owens, national vice chairman of the Craft Guild of Chefs; and Jason Gordon, general manager at Compass Group.

The judging was conducted in blind tastings over two days and was intense, with several of the own-brand products deemed so good that they were awarded a ‘Best of the Best’ accolade. Commenting on the standard, Green said: “In this day and age where many people love to buy major brands, it is refreshing to see own-label products that match these for quality and consistency. “In the past so many foodservice professionals have just automatically purchased brands, and in essence there is no problem with this, but with so many looking at their margins they have needed to re-visit how they buy and where they
buy from; this in turn has resulted in increased buying of own-labels. “Judging at this year’s awards showed just how far ownbrands have come, and how strong they are in their own right – they really do stand up for themselves.” Martin Lovell, managing director of Cash & Carry Management, commented: “This is the second year of the scheme and we are delighted that more companies and products entered. We are all striving for high standards and all of you in this room today should be very proud of the quality of your products. “Our new award this year, Best Innovation, was open to any own-brand product launched within the past 12 months and the response to this category was fantastic. This suggests that new product innovation is thriving in this sector and the future is assured. “A special feature of these awards is that we will be providing feedback on each and every product entered. By doing so, we hope to raise the bar even further in terms of own-brand development, for the benefit of wholesalers, their CCM customers and consumers alike.”
Exclusively for winners and special guests, the awards lunch was held at Westminster Kingsway College, London.
