PAST, NOW, AND FUTURE 2002 Before i went to the college, i thought that architecture is one kind of tool which could be used to recorded the history of human. Because human have started to build after we had learned to find a cave for shadowing. Architecture in every historical time is the first subject which is worth researching for. Human present an architecture by integrating the latest technologies and collect the atmosphere from the current society. Therefore, architecture is one method which is recording.

2007 When i got the bachelor degree of Architecture, i thought that architecture is a necessary intermedium which connect every thing together. People live in a house which is an architecture between human and nature. People gather in a city which is an architecture between urban and rural. People relax in the park which is an architecture between living and working. Otherwise, a house is for a family to live together, which improve the relationship between the family numbers. A city is for a group of people to work together, which increase the work efficiency between the citizens. A park is for residents to relax, which provide a good time between human and nature. Therefore, to design an architecture is to provide a place for improve the relationship between every thing.

2012 Now, i believe that architecture is a beginning which would bring me to everywhere i want to. The process of studying architecture is a process of learning how to identify the problem precisely and how to solve it perfectly. Therefore, no matter what challenges are in front of me, i have confidence to challenge to. I collected, organized, and edited this portfolio for you to get know who is HUNG-TSUNG LIN. There are five paper architectures from the college studio works, a practical interior and garden design, and few projects i did in ta Magazine. Please, enjoy them, thank you.

In I House, three main issues are how to keep the house peacefully, how to fix the problem of the mixed-use, and how to use the height difference between two entrance. In fact, using the height difference to plan the floor heights is the main solution in this project. All rooms have their own heights to make every place in private. Therefore, how to increase the interaction between the family numbers in the next issue which need to be solved. To insert three social spaces, the living room, the dinner room, and the roof garden, between the continuous house programs is the best way. Using the voids - two ground gardens, to make the store to recreate their own space character between the noise of the street and the quiet of the house and to provide the warm sun and the the fresh air to go though the house easily to fix the problem from the site of the street house*. * the street house

The street house is a typical residence in Taiwan. Because of the benefit of the defence the facades of the street house are more short than the long sides which combine with another two street house. The biggest problem of the street house is how to get the sun and the air into the building.

O HOTEL

The Volume Of O Hotel

O Hotel means a oasis hotel because it provides three gardens in such a concrete city. In order to provide a high quality of each room, i make a hole on the volume. It not only a good view from each room but also a fresh air through each windows.

O Hotel is located at one of the commercial areas, Ximending, in Taipei. While the evenings, the weekends, even the holidays, it would be very crowded by the shopping citizens, teenagers especially. All kinds of the subcultural products and restaurants are full all the space around here, even the sidewalks and the squares are occupied by the various vendors. The ground floor of the hotel site is a extremely valuable space. Otherwise, we all want to attract people to get in the stores as much as possible. To combine upon reasons, I proposed to lift the lobby to the top floor of the Hotel. It had considered the lobby of the hotel is only a functional space and had balanced the value between renting out or being a lobby. Otherwise, to post three gardens into the hotel.(Bottom Left) One is at the back of the building site on the ground, one is on the 5th floor, and the last one is on the middle of the 7th and 8th floor. The gardens not only provide a rest space for the guests from the hotel, but also offer to the passers. To inset two gardens with two pathways in the hotel to connect the two commercial buildings next by, to provide a chance to attract more people to get in easily.(Bottom Middle) Therefore, I created 4 entrances to get into the hotel more conveniently, and turned the entries from the horizontality to the verticality. It also makes the floors of O Hotel having a valuable usage.

Three Gardens & Four Entrances

In the left graph, the three green rectangle means the positions of the three gardens. In the middle graph, the red block means the pathway to into the hotel and the connection between the two commercial buildings next by. Otherwise, all the hotel guests need to get the top lobby by the elevators, check in on the 13th floor, than take the elevator again to their rooms.

Green Travel

There are two parts in Green Travel. First, Green Hipppie it is. Designed some installations for a a green bag, green crash helmet, and green scooter and made those crafts come real by CNC. Second, green city it is. Proposing a serial installations for green travel in our city and making people to rethink the relationship between the city and the green.

Green Hippie The concept of Green Hippie is i hope we could have a green action - getting more green in our live. It likes a green movement and has some green spirit, like hippie. It’s fun, not too serious, and takes easy, even with a little joke.

01 Green Bag I designed a bag for carrying some plants, a sleep pad and a laptop. Those plants is for sending the green to the strangers i met. The sleep pad and the notebook are for sitting with the friends and sharing the green info. Making the idea of the Green Hippie into the actions.

02 Green Crash helmet One symbol of the hippie is a unique outfit, such as having a punk hairstyle. So, i designed a installation for planting the wheatgrass and for connecting the grass and the crash helmet. Therefore, wearing this green crash helmet with the wheatgrass of the punk style is the first step to prove the spirit of Green Hippie.

03 Green Scooter Growing some plants on the scooter is another way to show the spirit of the Green Hippie. It’s also a best way to catch the attentions from the strangers and is a good beginning to communicate with those new friends.

Using mobile device to scan the QR code. To see a film about Green Hippie Movement.

Green Travel The relationship between green and people should be very close, even tying together. However, it is not. After 19th century, the word, ZONING, were created. We have started drawing lines, the roads, on the land while we are developing. It made a organized city where is convenience for people to live in. We placed a park, likes a zoo, surrounding by four roads. We cut the green away. Otherwise, the HIGH-RISE buildings had showed up after zoning. People have started to live and work on the different floors of the buildings. It made the high usage of the treasuring lands in a crowded city. However, we have left the green on the ground. Therefore, i designed a serial installations and inserted those into our city. Putting them on the way we pass by everyday and trying to have a dialogue between green and people.

04 Green Truck

- in the pocket park

The main function of the Green Truck is pointing out we all live on the same earth which means no boundary between the city and the country. I used a virtual vision, living forest image, and a real action, camping, to bring the idea out. Therefore, there is a campsite with a lawn and a wall of TV monitor on the back of the Green Truck. Otherwise, there are a info center in the body of the trunk for opening to the public to spread the knowledge; and a small plants field on the top for planting some green to separate the green from a point to a area. The Green Trunk would move to any place in the city to show the idea of Green Travel.

1 Virtuality Camping 2 Spreading Green 3 Green Info

05 Running Forest - in the MRT car

If we plant the plants on the MRT car, it would bring the people into a small green journey everyday. The moving experience in the city would be changed, relaxing while you are switching the places.

06 Green Corner

- at the crossroad

There are full of green in our city. But no one really care about it. Therefore, I designed to plant few tree at the corner of the sidewalk of the intersection surrounding with three glass wall and a glass door. People could see and walk through, but couldn’t get close to the green easily. All people need to is pushing the glass door.

07 Green Virtuality & Reality - at the MRT entrance

This installation, Using several projectors to project a serial sections of a real forest ,of a virtual forest is located at the entrance hall of the MRT station. While people walk in this space, the image would project on their bodies. Therefore, the virtual forest would come real. If you stop walking and stand there for 5 mins, the virtual forest would exist for 5 mins for you. However, the virtual forest wouldn’t exist if you don’t stop walk. The green only would exist after people start to care it.

08 Green End & Beginning - at the bus station

The MRT entrance is an end of a trip, but it also can be a beginning of the green. You can buy a plant on your way to home. Otherwise, The a green bus station would accompany with you to wait the bus. Next time, not only a green bus station but also a lawn would stand there for you and wait for your.

09 Four Seasons

- on the ticket machine

To redesign the ticket machine to a space of an artificial forest. Putting the original ticket machine on the trunk of the trees. And, using the projectors to project the colors of four seasons. While you get into this space, you would feel like walking into a forest. While you buy a ticket, you are buying the ticket from the nature. While you are abroad on the MRT car, you would be rethinking you buy the ticket from the machine with money or you borrow the permission of wandering from the nature.

10 Green Power

- along the street

This installation is located on the drain along with the sidewalk. The boards are wavering by the waste water, natural power, catching your attentions, the idea of Green Travel, and advertising the business, commercial.

Twin-Tube

The site of Twin-tube is the line park above the MRT tube between the two MRT stations, Zhongshan and Shuanglian. The original functions are a underground shop street and a flat park on the ground. The biggest problem of this site is low-use. However, there are a lot of potential elements around the site in this block. Therefore, how to fix the problem by proposing a development idea is the main issue. The two MRT stations at the start and the end points are located on two commercial streets with extremely atmospheres. One is an important commercial area in Taipei, where two department stores are standing next to each other. Many citizens would come to shop and hand out with the family and friends. The other street is a local market with a lot of daily supply shops. The residents are shopping on their ways to work or back home. It’s a chance to connect the two groups of people flowing to others’ side. Otherwise, there are four unique potential actives in this block, which are a lane for selling the second after-markets, a practicing room for learning modern dance, a movie theater for playing subcultural movies, and a underground mall for practicing street dance. Although there are a lot of unique actives, the inside of this block is continuously declining. The high vacant rate troubles the development of this block. My target is proposing a possible solution to fix the developing problem. If i were the government, what i can do to stop the inside declining, even turn this block to self-growing. To inset somethings at specific place to bring the people get in is what i’m trying. Therefore, the ruins of houses would get the new possible functions and have a chance to renew itself. This is the main reason why i chose the low-use underground mall to be my site.

Design Strategy First, to change back-and-forth to cycle. People used to start from one MRT stations directly to a particular place and go back on the same route. To inset some attractions along the boring line park, such a space for some events, would provide another choice for people to change their regular routes. Second, reprograming - locating a serial attractive functions between two MRT stations, replacing the original underground shopping mall. A new urban landscape architecture is what i propose. Therefore, people would probable change the original behave patten.

The form of the shopping mall was redesigned into twin-tube which are twisted together. Main benefit of TWIN-TUBE form is creating a whole new experience, shopping with sun and breeze. To provide a new path instead of siting in the box of MRT. People could take a 10 mins walk from the one side of MRT station to the other side, landing at a station which is next to. They would go through few stores, a gallery, and even a park.

Hostel In order to increase the popularity, how to keep the store along the path is the key point. To inset a hostel in the few step from the MRT station is one way to keep people to walk into and maintain shops to survive inside the TWIN-TUBE. Those travelers would also flow into lanes in the project site.

They are living around and shopping. In order to bring those people to get inside the block, I designed to bringing a group of the temporary residents to live inside the block. Therefore, this is a chance to bring the grocery stores to open inside the block. Using another method to excite the development of this declining area.

Community Library Bring a book on your way to home is the concept of locating a community library in the line park. The residents living around would come and shop on the way to work and the way to home. A community center would be a possible program at this side of the site. Otherwise, there are a open-air theater on the roof of the library. It would be a second room for playing subculture movies. It completes a cycle route of the visitors who especially come to see movies. They could start their from one MRT station to the spot film, through lanes to the library, than go back where they started.

This is a reprogram project. Need to consider with the original traffic line, the original construction and the old piping. Therefore, i redecorated the entrance, created a new lobby, used a walkway to connect all the programs together, and located the service core near the old piping. Otherwise, I also brought the out door environment into my design, trying to create a comfortable working space. Using the hall, in door relax room, with a french window to connect the garden, trying to bring the green in and bring the people out.

I was an editor in ta Magazine02 after i finished the substitution military service, 2008 Nov. I chose this job because i was looking for gaining a different professional skill. The major work are two parts: One, to integrate the project from the design studio to the art editor, from the printing to the sale. Two, to organize some architecture competitions from arranging the processes, collecting the projects, and publishing the official news letters. Both of them lead me to learn the skill of communicating and the skill of organizing.
