1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS
7
8 SCHRODER HOUSE (UTRECHT), GERITT RIETVELD, 2000
1.1 POINT/ LINE/ PLANE Point, line and planein one way forms into a sequence from 1 demensional to 3 dimensional, in the other way it could be interrelated in freeflow. In the interior space of the Schrodder House , the 3 elements: point, line and plane form togther a dynamic, open space.
9
10
Design Concept The concept of the model is to explore the interrelationship beyond that point, line and plane are forming togther as a sequence. The model split into 2 parts, one using linings to create 3 dimensional spaces that could line up forming a curve planar. The other part are panelling of different shaped planar vertically forming as a group of parallel 2 dimensional lines, translating the same space into through 2 different forms.

12 THE LEVITATED MASS (LOS ANGELES, USA), MICEAL HEIZER, 2012
1.2 MASS With my interpretation of mass as solid and opaque, I would like to explore on how natural mass and artificial mass affects the spatial experience through the infusion of light.
13
14
Design Concept Conventionally, volume of space definite spatial experience. In my drawing, the concept is about creating spaces of same volume but different experinence . Through cutting void and man-made mass to creat the diffrientiation in lighting effects, user’s emotions are definite by light in mass instead of volume.

1.3 FRAME & INFILL Simplify architecture intohorizontal and vertical planars, creating spaces through intersecting and moving pass each one another. It is the interection between frame and infill that creating a space that flows with emotions. Frame creates a foundation on how things flow, whereas infill determine what element to gather in the flow. Together frame and infill, they created time of circulation.

19
Deisgn Concept With the set-up of circulation control through my arrangement of rectilinear frame, I am trying to create a forced circulation on all the spaces I have created. Through that and my the infill elements, I am trying on manipulating a single space that create two different spatial experiences, emotions and time user interacts with the space.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRET

Noise Circulation Trees > 8m Trees < 8m Grass
2.1 SITE ANALYSIS Herring island is a man made island located in Yarra River in Ricdmond. Topogrphy is generally flat, with high vegetation coverage. Majority users of the island are families with children, and site visiting students. The chosen site is on the west end of the island,of which is the only concaved topography is of the island, with most dense tall trees coverage around the site.

2.2 SECRET & CONCEPTACLE Herring Island, as a man-made island, is so different from the well-known man-made island, Disneyland, the isolated fantacy world. In contrast to Disneyland, Herring island has been isolated and ignored even it is centered in the suburb. This has then which inspired me in the thought of a secret that could contrast with the other man-made island , Disneyland.
The secret of ugly truth in fairy tale stories. In my conceptacle, I have visualized the idea of ugly truth using black space, and fantacy in fairy tales as white space, in which the darkness is being entirely conceal underneath the skin of the fantacy shell.
27
1. Always having a great portion of happiness
28
2. Filtering of unwanted/ dirty/ ugly thoughts in the storyline.
2.3 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN I have pick up three major similiarities in fairy tales stories, and visualized through diagraming spacital arrangements to represent the idea of concealing the ugly truth as a secret through people engaging with my pavilion.
3. Altering storyline to always create a happy ending .

2.3 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN After the inital design development on spatial arragement, I think that my design would work better on a slope landscape than a flat landscape. So I looked for slopping areas of the island to be my potential site. As my ‘secret box’ would have to be partially revealed above ground, yet I wanted my box to be humbly sit into the surrounding, I finally chose the location with concaved landscape and dense vegetation coverage for my pavilion to develop on.

2.4 FINAL DESIGN The final design is an amalgam of visulization of fantacy and ugly truth, with the topography of chosen site on Herring Island. As an object in the landscape, I made it a mysterial box that sinks the deepest part of Herring Island as a place for revealing the ugliness of the its contrasting island, the fantacy Disneyland. The secret of ugly truth in fairy tales is meant to be kept away from children, such that spaces in my design is seperate into two parts, in which the hints to getinot the space for secret of ugly truth being revealed is only shown to adults.

2.6 SPACIAL EXPERIENCE OF INTERIOR SPACE
Circulationand materiality of the 2 spaces: the fanyatcy , and the ugly truth are basically the same. Such that my visualization of the two contrasting spemtions is based on the sptial arrangment, and intrusion of light.
38
Small openings and hideen door are designed to a height such that adults are the only to be seen and perhaps get to understand the hints given to get into the space of ugly truth.
39
2.6 SPACIAL EXPERIENCE OF INTERIOR SPACE
With the interaction of the circulation and sptial arrangment of the pavilion and the topograhy. It is oriented in the way such that people standing outside the box would never be able to look into the interior space of the pavilion.
40
Entrance to the ugly truth space is in the center, right behind the sheltered space of the pavilion. in which the hidden door is installed with sensor detectting height to intrigger the door opened, such that kids are not able to open the door and enter the space.

4.0 REFLECTION Earth, being as my first architectural studio, has been quite challenging at the beginning of the semester as I struggled where to start off with. I prefer being very directional when I started visualizing an idea, so I was a bit confused by the subject at first as it allows a great flexibility in developing concepts. I did struggled a lot to decide where to start off my concept during my early tectonic exercises. It was the process of precedent sresearch that helped me in better understand what the tectonics is really about, converging my ideas into a visual representation. The subject has a large proportion of thinking process way before I could get to actually start design something, such that in my designing process, it has been a large proportion developing digitally, as I find it much easier and less time consuming to visualize my concepts. Especially when it comes to the final design project, I started learning rendering in visually present the interior spatial experience and materiality. Throughout the semester, I find myself having great improvement in the design process, from idea generation to visually presenting it. And I believe the methods and skills that I have during this semester will be beneficial as a foundation for my future architectural studios and profesional uses.
