SCALE 1:2

SCALE 1:2

The fan consist of a curved paper section, 24 inner wooden blades and 2 wooden outter blades. The curved paper is folded into 53 quadrilateral equal parts, combinating with the 24 inner blades and sandwiched by 2 outter blades, connected by a plastic pin at the bottom end of the fan, acting as the pivot of the system.

MECHANISM The fan is folding and unfolding along the pivot. It can be unfolded on both ends, however the mechanism of the fan has restricted the unfolding direction be anticlockwise only.

Sketch Model PROCESS

1. Cut strips of paper, fold them into equal parts, test and observe flexibility of paper after folding.

2. Observe volume created by the folded strip through experimenting different ways of folding and twisting.

3. Twising and folding through linear direction appears to create greater volume.

8

4. Trying on combining different strips of folding paper to observe changes in volume.

RECONFIGURED MODEL

This model is an experiment with the notion of space, transformation of a 2-dimensional plane to a 3-dimensional space through folding of repeating panels. The reconfigured model is using same material as the original model, hence it is made out of paper. The start off of the model is based on the folding system of the paper component of the original model, and experimented on the folding direction from free-flow to linear. From the top view of this model, it can be seen that there is a gradual change of volume with various sizes of paper of the same folding system. 9

Sketch Design #1

Stretchable sleeping helmet

The helmet can be shortened and stretched. As same amount of material is distributed on each layer, hence material become less dense from top down bottom.

How does this respond to your personal space?

Layers can be folded into a rectangle. when unuse.

10

The idea of the design is to create a personal space for sleeping in the crowd. The helmet is a flexible folding system, allowing stretching and compressing vertically for the user to decide the amount of private space needed for sleeping.

Leaning sleeper shield

Inspiration model

How does this respond to your personal space? The design is a loop of stretchable folding panels. Personal space can be increase through streatching the folding panels further apart and it provides support to user’s weight with a denser use in material. It could supports different sleeping position by changing the shape of the loop, hence it allows user to decide their own comforable sleeping position.

Shield is flexible in the extend of coverage to the user.

Sketch Design #3

Free sleeping position loop

Design came from the idea of stretching and compressing the folding panels of the model.
