81ST ANNUAL CARSTAIRS & CREMONA 4-H SHOW & SALE | MAY 20-21, 2024 4
RAISING A 4-H PROJECT
The 4-H program promotes the “learn to do, by doing” mind-set in youth. The process of selecting, caring for, and raising these animals to the best of their ability is the job of the 4-H youth, who range in age from 6 years to 21 years. Through mentors they discover what their animal likes to eat and what nutrition the animal needs, what makes the animal most comfortable (large pen size, clean bedding, feed variety are examples), how to identify health problems and determine a course of action to resolve the issue, and how to train these animals to follow a lead, have a bath, and learn to accept pets and scratches from their human care takers.
Raising a beef animal is hard work! 4-H members start a beef market project in October and typically finish in May or June. Likewise, members start a market Lamb project in March and finish in May or June. Feeding, grooming, pen cleaning, and animal care culminate in countless hours of work by the members to grow and deliver a quality animal to the buyer.

Mr. Sutter likes to cuddle especially when I walk him. Thank you so much for coming to support the Cremona 4H club.

Davis
Hello, my name is Davis and this is my 9th year in 4-H. This year I have a Market Steer, Heifer and a 2 year old Cow-Calf pair project. My steer this year is named “Heartbreaker”. He got this name due to his distinct white heart shaped blaze. Throughout the entire year he was a great steer, from the start being very easy to work with. Overtime we were able to become a pretty good team. My heifer Candy was also a treat to work with, always having lots of patience when it came to clipping and halter breaking. My cow Ruby{which was out of my previous 4-H Cow} unfortunately lost her calf, so we underwhen the tedious process of grafting. Luckily her new heifer calf Pearl is very energetic when it came to eating, and they ended up becoming a great pair. This year was my fourth year being president of The West Carstairs 4-H Beef Club and we have a great group of members. I can’t wait to show my animals at the Carstairs and District 4-H Show & Sale and I hope to see you there!

I appreciates the continued support of all our clubs project purchasers, and I hope to see you at our Show and Sale!

Woolly is a Rambouillet/Dorset cross ewe, while McChops sire, Knox, is a Southdown/Hampshire cross. Lot of good breeds in there! McChops is fed twice a day, his barley/grower grain first, then his 3RD CUT ALFALFA hay. He weighed in at 46 LBs, so on the smaller end, but his genetics will allow him to reach market weight quickly. When he is being fed, he stands on a special stool, so he builds big butt muscles. We hope to see you in May, to support young 4H members in your community. We’ll be ready to show and answer any questions. See you then.

This year my projects are my Yearling Ewe, Ewe Lamb and my Market Lamb. All of my projects are homegrown and selected from my own flock. I will be working on refining my flock for the type of sheep I want to raise. All of my projects are Charollaise crossed with Rambouillet. My Market Lamb in no exception.
