VT Angus 2025 Better Blacks Bulls Sale

Page 1

Welcome to the 2025 Vee Tee Angus Bull Sale!

Welcome

We sincerely thank all our buyers, bidders, and everyone showing interest in our program. Your support is truly appreciated.

This year’s offering is another outstanding set of bulls. While sired by a diverse group, they consistently uphold the qualities Vee Tee bulls are known for—thick, deep-bodied, sound-footed, and highly masculine, with strong maternal backing.

At Vee Tee, we believe the foundation of a successful ranch lies in the cow. Maternal strength goes beyond just milk production—it includes longevity, sound feet, superior udder quality, and the ability to thrive on forage and grass.

When it comes to performance, we’ve had the opportunity to purchase and finish steers from our long-term customers, with outstanding results. These cattle have excelled both on grass and in the feedlot, reinforcing the consistency and quality of our breeding program.

None of this would be possible without the dedication of our Vee Tee family and crew. A special thank you to Northern Livestock Sales, Taylor Richards and Jaxon Payne with Bohrson Marketing, Ryan Dorran on the auctioneer’s stand, Mark Shologan with the DLMS internet team, and Jayden Payne for his help with clipping and picturing.

We appreciate your interest in our program and look forward to working with you.

The Vee Tee Team

Increase Profit, Not Production

Vee Tee Bulls possess the genetics for early rapid growth without that undesirable extended growth curve. But there are other reasons to use our bulls. Most ranchers are still programmed to believe the myth that the only way to increase profit is to increase production, though heavier weaning weights. Many seed stock producers have perpetuated the ‘profit through higher production myth by promoting the huge weaning and yearling weights of their bulls. Unfortunately, production increases don’t always translate into increased profit and the two are usually antagonistic. Cattleman need to start thinking in terms of profit per cow instead of pounds per calf. Where cost are documented, the ideal weaning weight still ranges from 500 - 600 pounds -- anything over that is usually at the expense of net profit. If a commercial producer is trying to reduce production costs and is keeping replacement females, it doesn’t make sense to purchase bulls from a herd that is strictly production orientated. The Vee Tee bull is unique in this ability to sire daughters that are functional in forage based, least cost environment, while maintaining profitable performance in their calves.

What About Carcass?

Selection for carcass genetics must be a balancing act between marbling, external fat cover and percent retail product. An overemphasis on marbling can result in cattle with inadequate muscling. A positive percent retail product EPD is equally if not more important than marbling. Most of the Vee Tee herd sires possess carcass EPD’s that reflect a balance of the carcass traits. We have analyzed carcass data on many groups of cattle sired by our bulls. Despite being heavier muscled, higher volume type cattle, steers sired by our bulls typically display below average fat cover, an above average marbling score and superior cut-ability (percent retail product). We have observed that while our bulls are noted for their ability to sire improved fleshing ability on forage, this does not translate into overfat carcasses.

What About Size?

The debate over the ideal cow size will probably never be settled, especially in purebred circles. While some people still like added frame, we have selected cattle so the steers reach the first 1150-1200 pounds as quickly and cheaply as possible and the females don’t end up maturing into excessive sized cows. A typical Vee Tee cow ran under our conditions matures at 1350-1400 pounds and when we compare cow production to cow size, our smaller cows are usually the most profitable.

Looking Good Has Its Rewards

Our cattle have a unique and attractive phenotype. While one cannot breed for looks alone, a review of successful purebred and commercial cattle sales reveals that as long as the other required selling elements are in place, an attractive phenotype is an economic factor. Cattle that are aesthetically pleasing simply bring more money. (info courtesy of O C C).

These traits are what our philosophy of cattle breeding is based on.

VTA 590A is a bull we feel extremely fortunate to be able to offer the progeny of. Origionally purchased by the Belsheim family from our 2015 sale. He serviced 30-50 heifers every year for them until they had so many daughters retained that they sold him back to Vee Tee. In the Vee Tee herd this bull has been used both walking and for AI purposes. His genetics will continue to be used in the future as we have banked semen from this bull.

Duff 4 Real sons and daughters are becoming standouts in our program. They will add muscle, length of body, style and massive rib shape. The daughters are very feminine with a lot of capacity.

A fantastic offering from one of our long producing cows which we purchased from Hillfire Angus. 8

The Vee Tee program began with a commitment to producing low birth weight, strong maternal, cost efficient performance cattle that are easy fleshing and require minimum maintenance while working in a forage based environment. Our appreciation for this type of cattle evolved over time and the years of working with large numbers of cattle of several breeds gave us the practical insight into the type of cattle needed to meet our goals.

At Vee Tee Angus, balanced multiple trait selection has always been the cornerstone of our breeding philosophy. Most cattlemen today would admit that single trait selection has caused more problems than it’s solved. One need only look at the recent past to see how an overemphasis on frame and growth resulted in excessively large framed, high maintenance cattle that were not practical or profitable. Despite this awareness, true multiple trait selection is often done in name only--witness the number of people who use only milk EPDs when talking about maternal traits or marbling EPDs when discussing carcass sires.

We believe that cattle breeding is an art. There remain essential cow herd traits not addressed directly by performance testing and EPDs that Vee Tee Angus must have. These traits include fleshing ability on forage, capacity, excellent udder quality, a gentle disposition and structural correctness. Mere buzz words you say? Traits that are hard to define and quantify can still be real. When differences exist between cattle, no matter how subtle, selection pressure can be applied to those differences. Maybe that’s where the “art” of cattle breeding comes into play.

Making progress through multiple trait selection can be a slow process but our long term devotion to that process has resulted in cattle that we believe are unique. At Vee Tee Angus, maternal is more than just milk, carcass means more than marbling and performance is more than just pounds. Many cattlemen, commercial and seedstock producer alike, are finding themselves at a crossroads with their cow herds. Years of breeding for increased production or using too many highly promoted, unproven bulls has resulted in cattle that are--and let’s be frank here--big, bad and ugly. Vee Tee Angus is one of the few programs truly equipped to address this problem. While remaining solidly performance based, our unique herd bull battery is also designed to moderate size, add muscle, improve structural soundness and fleshing ability and improve udder quality while maintaining profitable production levels. Put simply, the Vee Tee program is going beyond performance.
