Doug Fee, Chair – Canadian Angus Foundation

Angus breeders have generously risen to the opportunities the past few years and your support has made it possible for the Foundation to enhance our Junior program and begin work on collecting, cataloging and displaying artifacts from the history of our Association. Proceeds from previous sales have made it possible for our youth to travel within Canada to our annual GOAL (Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders) conference and for some to represent Canada with distinction at the last World Angus Forum in New Zealand. Our first major program and longest running successful initiative is the Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Program that has once again attracted several excellent candidates who will be competing during this year’s Convention. We have been blessed by past Ambassadors who have each benefited from the opportunity and all have represented the Association with dignity and dedication. On behalf of the volunteer Directors who oversee your Foundation, I thank those who continue to support it by either generously donating to this sale or participating as buyers. We understand there are a lot of demands made from many groups for financial assistance but we are pleased you appreciate the value of contributing to youth programming through the Foundation. If you happen to want to help but can’t manage to purchase one of the sale lots, I would encourage you to consider the purchase of a leaf in the ‘Angus Roots’ project or either recognizing a family member on the ‘Wall of Honour’ or one of the key animals from your program in ‘The Breeders’ Choice’. These three projects all provide for permanent recognition in the national office and all proceeds go to assisting the Foundation in providing for future programs.

Kevin Blair, President – Canadian Angus Association

It’s a proud time for the Canadian Angus Association and it’s an even prouder time for the Canadian Angus Foundation. The beef business is strong, the Angus breed is the envy of all others and as an industry we are all rallying around the youth and what they represent in terms of the future of this great land. I would like to welcome everyone from around this great continent to the 2014 edition of the Canadian Angus Foundation’s “Building the Legacy Sale”. Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan will set the bar that all others will be judged by with regards to commitment to youth. The consignors have shown unprecedented commitment to the vision and now we all must rally around that support. I am so proud to have served the members of the Canadian Angus Association in a time when we simultaneously endorsed the future of the breed through the investment in “Angus Central” and ramped up breeder commitment to the future of youth through this amazing event called the “Building the Legacy” sale. Agriculture is a great place to spend a career and I personally congratulate and applaud every person who supports that concept and vision. It will be a magical night Saturday, June 7th in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Make sure you are in attendance to witness history. See you there.

Rob Smith, CEO – Canadian Angus Association

“Building the Legacy” resulted from Director Kevin Blair brainstorming at the February 2012 CAA Board meeting in Regina. Retiring Director Shane Castle facilitated the idea as a Foundation fundraiser… and the rest is contemporary history! The first “Building the Legacy Sale” was about sending our outstanding Canadian youth to the inaugural “Youth Team Challenge” at the World Angus Forum in New Zealand last October. We hoped to raise $25,000; the result exceeded $40,000. Last year we hoped for a modest increase and we broke $75,000! Each year the donors within our Angus fraternity ‘set a new bar’, both for total donations as well as the uniqueness, marketability and value of their offering. A ‘watershed’ donation came in 2013 when LLB Angus – the Brown family of Erskine, AB – offered ‘Pick of the Heifer Calves’ born that year. This year, three generous and dedicated breeders – Wilbar Cattle Co., South View Ranch and Young Dale Angus – have stepped up to do the same. They and all our supporters have ‘dug deep’ to offer rare and precious donations of their genetics, products or services with the hope of truly “Building the Legacy”. And what a legacy it is! With new programs and investment being made by the Foundation as a result of this annual fundraising sale, we are able to create more opportunity for development in our youth. Further, the Foundation is increasing our national archives, particularly now that we have an ideal location and facility in which to tell our 108-year Association history and 155-year Canadian breed history – your national Angus headquarters, Angus Central. And with the continued success of “Building the Legacy”, please know that we will only be able to do more and better. One final note… all the efforts of those involved with “Building the Legacy” – our auctioneers, our sales consultants, every single interaction you can think of – is donated. If you happen to see any of those folks listed on the page to the left either at this or another event, please thank them for their continued effort to “Build the Legacy”. Thanks very much, everyone. We are humbled by and proud of your interest in our future and “Building the Legacy”.

Lot Wilbar

Pick of the 2014 Heifer Calf Crop – Red or Black A true success story, it should come as absolutely no surprise that Bryan and Tracey, when faced with the nervously posed question, “Will you consider donating a pick of your 2014 heifer calves to this year’s “Building the Legacy” Foundation fundraiser?”, issued an immediate response: “Of course. We are proud to do that.” It was an emphatic response to a very big question. Given the success story of Wilbar Cattle Co. within our Canadian Angus fraternity, such commitment and altruism is as deeply ‘bred in’ as the quality of their seedstock.

Bryan and Tracey are the third generation of Willms to raise Angus cattle. Their story begins in 1954 when Jake started with a group of 14 Angus cows that had tattoos, but registration certificates proved impossible to receive. The herd would be maintained commercially, purchasing top quality Black Angus bulls to breed them to and the entire herd was black, something Jake came to love. In 1962 they started purchasing purebred herds WITH the papers and Wilbar as a seedstock producer was born!

Wilbar Jennifer 918N

Red Head Bayberry 176L

Coincidentally, this donation will sell just a few minutes after Wilbar receives their Heritage Award for 50 years of consecutive CAA membership. While that first generation, CAA Past President Jake and Bernice, is unable to attend, second generation (also CAA Past President) Jud and Betty and Dan and Bonnie will be in attendance as will Bryan and Tracy and, quite possibly, the fourth generation, Kylie and Owen. They were also the 2006 Saskatchewan Angus Association Breeder of the Year. It is inspiring to note that, while Wilbar have ALWAYS been highly regarded as Angus breeders, it is possible their greatest days are happening right now with their reputation rising incredibly high as the breeders of bulls like HF Kodiak 5R (Lot 92) and Wilbar Longitude 646Y (Lot 79). They breed the best… and share them to influence, even change, our breed… for the BETTER! These past three years, their “Tools of the Trade” bull sale has been incredibly successful and exposing more cattlemen, both commercial and purebred, to the Wilbar brand. And what a brand… one that balances discipline with community, focus with friendship and intelligence with volunteerism.

View

Pick of the 2014 Heifer Calf Crop – Red or Black South View is a purebred Red and Black Angus operation owned and managed by the Kaufmann family: past CAA Director Keith and Linda; son Shane and his wife Alexis with their four children Keaton, Kamrie, Kohen and Korbyn; and daughter Stacey who lives and works off the ranch but helps out at busy times. They are located in south central Saskatchewan just 30 minutes north of the US Border. The Kaufmanns have been in the cattle business all their lives; Keith grew up and took over the farm which today is known as South View Ranch, land Keith’s family has operated since 1949 with Black Angus genetics gracing the pastures since the late 1950s. They currently run 250 Red and 150 Black females and are routinely among the top 10 CAA members for total annual registrations. South View strives to raise cattle that are eye appealing, structurally correct and have great maternal traits with solid performance. These are the kind that will go out and make a profit for customers.

Red SVR Faye 5M

South View has been a Canadian Angus Performance Program reporting herd since their first purebred Red Angus purchase in 1990, followed by Black Angus shortly after at young Shane’s urging. Further, they have been on the CUP Ultrasound program since its inception with the Canadian Angus Association. South View hosts their own bull sale at the ranch each April and just completed one of their most successful with a $3,800+ average on more than 85 bulls. Prominent cow families such as Jinny, Christy, Fancy Lady, Forever Lady and Ruby have contributed to the strength of the cow herd. Just as important as great females is bull selection and South View have always purchased and produced great herd sires like Red South View No Equal 28H (‘Elite’ since 2009 with 16 ‘Elite’ daughters) and the impressive low birth weight, exceptional carcass sire Red SVR Knight 73P to name a couple. South View Ranch was very honored in 2009 to be chosen as the Saskatchewan Angus Association Purebred Breeder of the Year. Great people. Great cattle. What a superb combination for this exceptional donation to help with “Building the Legacy”!

Lot Young

Dale

Pick of the 2014 Heifer Calf Crop The Young family – Barry, Marj and Robb – are renowned cattle folk and we’re thrilled that they have made this extraordinary donation to assist our Canadian Angus Foundation in its objective of “Building the Legacy”. Young Dale is located in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan, only 22 miles from the US border and 16 miles from the Manitoba border. Angus cattle have been their passion and livelihood for more than 40 years. Calving over 150 females, they have developed cow families that are truly outstanding. You will be selecting from families like Georgina, Grace, Blackbird, Peg, Kristina, Tilda, Elba and, of course, the famous Young Dale Pollyanna family.

Lot 135 – Young Dale Erica 135A - $5500

Lot 74 – Young Dale Blackbird 74A - $8750

Young Dale was honoured to be named the 1998 and 2005 Saskatchewan Angus Association Breeder of the Year and Barry served on the CAA Board of Directors for many years, including as 2007-08 President. When Barry was awarded the Saskatchewan Livestock Association Honour Scroll last January at the Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference, he challenged everyone in attendance to assure they do all they can to bring ‘new blood’ into our sector and work with young cattlemen and women to assure sustainability. He further encouraged everyone to focus on 4-H and Junior associations to assist the development of young folks with an interest in genetic improvement. There is no doubt… this heartfelt plea comes right from the core of the Young family and is exactly why they are making this donation: to assist the Canadian Angus Foundation in making these wishes come true and to potentially assist a new or younger Canadian Angus breeder change their program for the better through the selection of a foundation Young Dale female. The kind an entire program can actually be built around! Barry is very supportive of Junior initiatives and takes great pride in the Cliffe family, or the extended part of Young Dale, including his grandchildren. Barry is also a Past Chair of the Canadian Angus Foundation.

Lot 55 – Young Dale Pollyanna 55A - $6000

One of the great Canadian sales this year has been Young Dale’s where the 46 yearling bulls averaged $6,678; 29 open heifers averaged $4,029; for a total of the 75 lots averaging $5,654. The females sold extremely well, too, with those pictured on this page selling for $5,500, $6,000, $8,750, $9,000, $9,300 and $10,500! So if Young Dale’s heifer in this spring’s sale sold for those prices, just think of the value of purchasing their donated ‘Pick of the 2014 Heifer Calves’. You get your pick from one of the nation’s strongest operations with a renewed buzz that is positively deafening. Please make your ‘pick’ by August 30th, 2014. The Young family is wholly committed to help you to whatever degree you wish with your selection!

Without question Longitude had quite a fall last year for the Dietrich family, going undefeated. Grand Champion Red Angus bull at Olds Fall Classic, Farmfair International and Canadian Western Agribition earned 646Y the title of CAA Red Angus Show Bull of the Year. To end his show career, he won the RBC Supreme Champion Bull at Agribition and was declared “The Champion of the World” in the Angus Breeders.net competition. Longitude earned the title Canadian National Red Angus Champion Bull but his greatest achievement is his offspring. The Dietrich family have never seen this depth and quality in a first set of calves from another sire. Red Wilbar Longitude 646Y has a bright future on the Canadian Angus scene and his sons just ‘lit it up’ in the Get-A-Grip Bull sale this spring. The best part? Other than Redrich, only Nordal Farms and Glesbar Cattle Co. have access to Longitude from their purchase of packages at the 'Masterpiece' and ‘Power & Perfection’ sales at Agribition. He was a feature bull in the Eastondale offering to be sure, and one of the greatest VK bulls to ever sell, a big accomplishment given how close to 50 years the Easton’s have been active and successful Canadian Angus breeders. This low birth weight heifer-safe bull was first a ‘crowd favourite’ on the Saskatchewan Angus tour last August, and has developed into one of the nation’s most talked-about sires with lots of middle and capacity with real herd bull character. Sold from T Bar K for $23,000 at the 2012 bull sale, the Dorrance’s were very proud of Recoil and both Alberta operations were thrilled to acquire this great grandson of Red Bar-E-L Ribeye 103R with the explosive performance and muscle. His 2013 show career brought Reserve Championships at two of the largest Red Angus shows in Canada – Farmfair and Agribition – while he was Grand Champion Angus bull at the Gold Show in Armstrong. To cap his show career, Recoil was named a “Top 10’ finalist in the RBC Supreme Championship to close out Agribition and the annual Canadian show season. There are no plans for further semen sales on Recoil due to current international business so this is your very rare opportunity to ‘catch the wave’ and ride the success of Ribeye genetics.

He stands on perfect feet, is low birth (83 lbs) and has big-time performance (205 day weight of 943 lbs and 365 day weight 1,494). His awesome dam and grand dam are big bodied, easy fleshing females, along with perfect udders with high quality milk. The dam has a +38 milk EPD and a 205 ratio of 2nd of 73 at 118 and the maternal grand dam has a +32 milk EPD. As Agribition’s reigning Reserve Grand Champion Bull, you’re getting in on the ‘ground floor’ of the next ‘great one’! Also donated by Come As U R.

Red CC Expansion 5E Semen

5 Straws

Tattoo: CCF 5E • Reg. #: 836778 Red CC Expansion 5E was purchased by Towaw after being the Reserve Futurity Champion Bull at Red Roundup for Bryon Wolters’ Coulee Crest Angus herd. He went on to be the ‘95 Agribition Reserve Champion Bull as a calf and proved to be one of the best female producers ever used at Towaw. The mark of a truly great breeding bull is when he produces a great son; Expansion produced his great son, Red Towaw Indeed 104H in 1998. While he may be almost 20 years old, Expansion genetics are ‘right for the times’ as a daughter, Red Towaw Molly 406A, has been named Champion Junior Heifer at Bashaw, and Reserve Junior Heifer at the Olds Interbreed Junior shows this spring. Please see her picture here as well, and recognize that Thomas’ show heifer, 406A, is, indeed, a full sister to Indeed 104H!

He was the top marbling bull of his calf crop with an IMF ratio of 155 and scanned a 365-day REA of 15.8 inches with a yearling scrotal measurement of 41 cm. Eliminator has consistently sired pounds, length, sheer thickness and extreme muscle density. Eliminator breeds true and his consistency is unparalleled. Connealy Consensus 7229 has proven himself to be that ‘next generation’ bull for Hamilton Farms that provides calving ease, yet adds loads of performance to your calves. Calves by Consensus are docile, have lots of thickness, and look like the kind that will make great cows. He is one of the leading Angus sires south of the border and this is one of rare opportunities to access his semen in Canada. Hamilton Farms top son by Consensus in 2013 sold to LLB Angus at $51,000 and a daughter sold through their 2012 sale to Continental Angus for $7,750. Four Seasons is the senior herd sire at Johnson Livestock and at 9 years of age continues to cover his group of cows. They originally purchased him in 2006, but due to the closed border didn’t get to walk him until 2007. Since this limited beginning he has gone on to sire more than 400 registered progeny at Johnson Livestock including several of the high selling bulls in their annual sale. The biggest reason the Johnsons were willing to donate Four Seasons semen, for this first time at public auction, is because over the past three years they have kept every one of his daughters, not offering a single one for sale. Four Seasons already has six Elite daughters and he is expected to become one of the only living Elite sires very soon.

First Choice of Angus Central Patio Pillers Own a piece of Angus Central, your national Canadian Angus headquarters! Over the next four years, we are making available the opportunity for you to STAMP Angus Central with your brand. You have the opportunity to purchase your choice of which of these four pillars you want to put your operation/company logo, contact information, and message on. As the national ‘hub’ of Canada’s Angus service, we are increasingly becoming a ‘gathering place’ for industry, having held a Ministerial press conference and numerous industry and community meetings. You will receive an approximate 1½ foot wide x 2 foot long eye-level space ‘to call your own’ to show everyone who enters Angus Central what you have to share, advertise and communicate with those who visit. Increasingly, we will utilize the patio for functions so your investment will be noticed. Each pillar is sold for a four-year term.

Considerations: Please do not include specific dates with years, although a general “Third Monday in March” is fine; The Canadian Angus Foundation must approve of your display design; You are purchasing the SPACE only. We estimate costs of your signage or steel, brass, iron, etc. plaque or whatever you wish to put into the pillar (we have received quotes from a number of stonemasons) to be from $500 to $1,000 to complete the project and make the pillar your own. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact Belinda Wagner (bwagner@cdnangus.ca; 306-537-1518) or Rob Smith (ceo@cdnangus.ca; 403-861-6884) to discuss.
