Simmental
Celebrating 40 Years Welcome to the 14th Annual Brandl Cattle Co. and Guest Bull Sale. This marks the 40th year of raising purebred Angus cattle. It is also a fantastic feeling to finally be in a new era of sustained profitability in beef cattle production! Cattlemen can finally maintain a standard of living equal to the amount of effort that we’ve put into our operations. As the oil industry is experiencing a periodic slow down, agriculture in Alberta, and the beef business in particular is the province’s most flourishing business. In the past year we have enjoyed spending a little more time at various auction marts watching our customers’ calves sell. In many cases they have been the high selling calves that day, with steer calves bringing up to $2100+. What a great time to be in this business! With higher prices there is also a larger spread between top quality and second cut calves. The cattlemen that are putting the extra effort and expense into quality genetics are achieving great results. With all this said, we are once again pleased to offer an excellent set of top quality Angus bulls for your appraisal. To ensure repeat customer purchases, we are presenting several new sire groups to provide fresh genetics to match buyers’ previous choices. We have calving ease bulls, high maternal bulls, and high performance, carcass improving bulls. These bulls are athletic, good haired and ready to go to work. In an effort to provide our customers with one-stop bull shopping, we welcome our long- time friends Jason and Trisha French and family who are joining us with a consignment of outstanding Simmental bulls. Jason and Trisha have put together an excellent set of purebred Simmental cows, and we are excited to have them bring many more bulls in future years. We know that they have the same philosophies about cattle and customer service and are committed to this sale and the future of the industry. As always come for the bulls, but please stay for the hospitality afterwards. We will be hosting a customer appreciation steak supper followed by entertainment and dance featuring “Tracy Millar” and her band. This year in conjunction the dance will also be a fundraising event for Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. There will be a raffle and silent auction items available. It promises to be fun and entertaining. We look forward to seeing you March 12th! Regards,
Byron, Gwen, Kailey, Wynton & Landon Brandl

Using Yearling Bulls
We firmly believe in the use of yearling bulls and feel that it is one of the best years of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and introduce to the herd and their only concern is breeding cows. When yearling bulls are managed appropriately they will perform better over time than bulls purchased as two- year-olds. Here are some guidelines for care of your yearling bulls:
• Upon arrival at your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls and feed them a maintenance ration of 5 - 8 lbs of grain or pellets and free choice of hay. Then reduce the amount of grain so they are on straight hay or grass two weeks prior to turn out. • Where possible try to limit the bulls to 45 - 60 days of pasture service the first year. At this time remove them and put them in a separate pasture with plenty of grass or good quality hay. • A winter feeding ration of 3 - 5 lbs of grain or pellets plus free choice hay will put the bulls in condition and allow them to grow and develop. You will also benefit Kailey winning the 2015 by one and probably two or more years of use out of a well-managed and healthy Junior National Young bull purchased as a yearling. Cattleman award

Black Angus • An embryo transplant son of the ELITE Miss Burgess 8U. In fact both 8U and her dam 45L are CAA ELITE females with weaning ratios of 107. We already know 8U can raise a herd sire as she is the dam of BCC Moonshine 61Z. Kailey showed a daughter of 8U very successfully last summer, with her being the Reserve Champion Purebred heifer at the Canadian National All Breeds Junior Show. Celebrating 40 years in the
ANGUS business!
In 1976 a boy had a dream - Brandl Cattle Co. Celebrating 40 Years Of Purebred Angus Breeding. Come see where the dream has taken us!
18
As a 9-year-old entrepreneur I started my quest to being in the purebred business by selling fishing worms. I grew up in the small tourist town of Sicamous, BC. My parents owned a service station and restaurant and had just purchased a small farm. While living in a trailer behind the service station we kept a few horses and had a large pile of horse manure that was loaded with earth worms. The farm that Mom and Dad purchased was mostly bush and needed to be cleared and a house and barn built yet, so I had time to sell worms to buy my first cow! I sold worms that summer – 20 for a dollar. It was common for me to get a phone call just after 6 a.m. from the service station attendant requesting more worms as they were sold out, so there I was in my pyjamas and rubber boots out digging more worms. That was the summer of 1975. That fall I purchased my first purebred Angus cow. Locally, there were two ads for cows for sale. One with Black Angus and another with Polled Herefords. My Dad, having grown up on a farm near Clyde, AB, said he had heard over the years that Angus were supposed to be easier to look after, so he suggested that with them running the business and me in school that I should purchase an Angus cow, as the cows had to do their own thing 95 percent of the time. That proved to be possibly the best advice I was ever given. From day one I have insisted on trouble free cattle that work for me not the other way around! In 1976 my first purebred calf was born, and I became a member of the Canadian Angus Association. With worm sales and selling a calf in the fall, I purchased my second Black Angus cow. I joined the Shuswap 4-H Beef Club that fall and soon found that everyone else had Hereford calves. I was the lone member with Angus. In those days I took a lot of teasing about Angus being small and wild. That was also good for me, as I vowed from the start to have a herd of Angus with performance and good disposition. My second year in 4-H my steer won his weight class, and I won a showmanship class or two. The teasing began to stop. Over the next couple years I discovered the benefits of crossbred Angus steers and the teasing about Angus from my peers began to turn to sneers of frustration. In the fall of 1982 I travelled to the Dividend Select Sale in Lacombe, AB, and purchased the high selling heifer calf – Ed Rene Black Velvet 38P for $1,600. This proved to be one of my greatest investments. By the time I graduated from High School in 1983 I had a herd of about two dozen females and was in partnership with my Mom and Dad as Blue Jay Angus Farm. After graduation I began to venture out more with our cattle. I showed the Champion Angus Bull at Calgary Stampede in 1986 and the Reserve Grand Champion Female at Farmfair in 1987. At the prestigious Kamloops Bull Sale Blue Jay Angus Farm won Champion Angus Bull five years in a row from 1988 to 1993. One of my most memorable times in those years was being a director of the BC Angus Association. I was in charge of advertising and saw this as an opportunity to take a little revenge on those that sneered at Angus when I was first starting out. I designed a series of radio ads that played through the night during spring calving season. They went something like “If you’re hearing this you’re probably in the middle of an all-night calving session. This is the sound (snoring in the background) of an Angus breeder during calving season. So, get Angus and rest easy.” While being a director on the Kamloops Bull Sale Committee, I heard feedback from other breeds. It still brings a big smile to my face! In the fall of 1993 I moved to Jarvie, AB, and started Brandl Cattle Co. BC land prices were unfeasible and Alberta was a land of opportunity. While living in BC and traveling to Alberta for shows and sales, the Alberta Angus Breeders had always treated me as one of their own and I just always felt like I belonged here. Being the new guy in a new area required some promotion and luckily this area had several small town summer fairs that proved to be very successful. I also ventured to Calgary Bull Sale a couple times and had the Champion Yearling Bull there in 1996. In the spring of 1997 I exported BCC Eileenmere Lad 17F to England and in 1998 I had the high selling lot in the Alberta Superstar Sale with a $12,000 bull calf to Spruceview Angus. It was also in these years, while traveling solo, that I met a red haired Hereford girl at Farmfair. Gwen and I were married in the fall of 2000 and it has proven to be an amazing venture through these years as husband and wife, best friends, business partners, and parents. The Hereford cows though, while an interesting experience, were replaced by the start of our Red Angus division in 2005. We were fortunate that we could utilize our experience from the black herd to make some decisions that really fast tracked our red program. While developing an almost instant commercial market for our red bulls we were fortunate to also have a bred heifer sell for $14,750 at Red Roundup in 2007 and the high selling heifer calf at Red Roundup in 2008 for $9,000. While the glitz and glamour is all well and good, when raising a family and keeping the bills paid it is the staying home and serving the needs of our commercial bull customers that is important to us. While we once sold most of our bulls privately out of the yard, in 2004 we decided to start marketing the bulk of our bulls on one day. We wanted to have a unique event not “just another bull sale.” In 2004 we were in fact the first purebred herd in Canada to ever hold an online bull sale. Over the years our sale has evolved. The addition of a sale barn right in our yard has been a huge improvement. The bulls all sell by live auction and are displayed on big screen TV’s in heated comfort. It is also one of the few sales anywhere that is followed up with a supper and dance. The addition of a consignment of Simmental bulls from our good friends Jason and Trisha French at Luv-N-it Cattle Company makes for a one-stop shopping session for many people. In 40 years I’ve seen a lot of changes to the industry. A lot of people have come and gone, especially purebred breeders. It’s sort of humorous that I’ve served as a director on the BC Angus board, Alberta Angus, and also the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society. Last summer it was mentioned that I let my name stand as a director on the Alberta board. Most of the breeders around now weren’t around when I did serve on the board and the ones that were there have mostly gone! Last summer Kailey was elected as a director to the Alberta Junior Angus Association and is really looking forward to helping shape the future of the industry. I’ve seen some great highs and some devastating lows in the 40 years of raising purebred Angus, but I can honestly say that at this point I have never been as excited about the future of the industry and the future of our own herd. God willing, I’m looking forward to celebrating 50 and 60 years in the business! A huge THANK YOU to a few people that helped me get started and pointed in the right direction – my parents Bob and Rose Brandl whose selfless contributions, assistance, efforts and advice have and continue to make this all possible. I can’t Thank You enough. Some wise cattlemen that I always enjoyed sitting and listening to include: Ernie Haughton, Fred Nichol, Alfred Trescher, Ray Van Steinberg, Ed Molzan, and Joe Erdell. I learned specific things from each of these men that have significantly impacted my existence in the industry. I learned a lot more listening than I did talking.

Opportunity of a Lifetime On behalf of Luv-N-It Cattle Company, we would like to welcome you to our annual bull sale. Once again we would like to thank the Brandls for working together to offer you both Angus and Simmental genetics in the same location on the same day. We would like to congratulate the Brandls for achieving the milestone of breeding Angus cattle for 40 years. 2015 brought some great things to the cattle industry; seeing the record high prices continue and proving investing in your cow herd is a great asset; the old story goes – you get out what you put in. In the fall of 2014 we had the opportunity of a lifetime being able to invest in a large group of females from Mappin Simmentals, one of the Simmental breed’s elite cow herds, located in east central Alberta. This will allow us to bring you a little different pedigree while giving you more choices in your bull selection and allowing ourselves to build a cow herd around some wellestablished foundation cows. As our operation grows I strongly encourage you to come and evaluate our program and expand your genetic selection with ourselves. The bulls have been developed on a TMR ration since weaning in September. All bulls have been on a full herd health protocol which also includes the Fusaguard footrot vaccine. They have been culled down to a standard that we are proud of, producing the type of bulls that we would run on our own commercial cows. If we would not use them why should we expect you to use them? We hope that you can join us on March 12th. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call or stop by for a visit to evaluate the bulls prior to the sale. Bulls will be available at Brandl Cattle Co. for viewing starting Wednesday, March 9.
Special Thanks to

• You have to admire 70C for longevity traits; his dam was 12 years old when she had him. The 751N cow come to us in the deal from Mappins. A very well respected cattleman told me as we were deciding which cows to pick from Mappins “take some of the older cows, they are the building blocks to form around”. This deep sided, wide topped, solid red bull comes from a foundation female.

• 83C aka Best Interest is a solid red calf that is long spined. For his age you have to admire his testical development. Another Force 28Y son from one of the early Yamaggucci daughters in our herd. Even though he is one of the younger calves in the sale, he shows a strong weaning weight and has been packing on the pounds by doing over 4 lbs a day since weaning.

• 88C is our youngest calf in the sale but he does not give up any performance. This young calf is going to produce a powerful set of calves that are full of muscle. You have to admire this solid red calf for his length of body and depth of side. Don’t let age be a factor on this calf!

A 94 lb. birth weight from a first calf heifer, born mid March and being at the top end for both weaning and yearling weights. This solid black calf is long spined, deep ribbed and loaded full of muscle. Let my loss be your gain come sale time!
