Editors Note | Media Schedule

HELLO FROM THE EDITORS As we round out this volume of the Missouri Hereford News with the final 2023 issue, as editors we are thankful to have spent another year working with an incredible group of breeders and association members. We hope as the year comes to a close, Missouri Hereford Association (MHA) members are encouraged to give back. In this issue, we have highlighted several stories and people who speak on the value of community and recognition for others. From the family values of the 2022 MHA Commercial Breeder of the Year to Missouri Junior Hereford Members who use their musical talents for many causes, members across the state have learned the value of using their time and talent for the benefit of others. There’s always a reason for the season—and this November we ask for our members and readers to evaluate the essence of giving back. Maybe it’s helping out neighbors working the ground or planting wheat, saying and showing thanks to those who have contributed time and efforts to your operation, or sending donation money to your junior breed association. No matter how you show appreciation for others, make it a priority to close out 2023 with gratitude and grace. Be sure to mark down the many fall dates and especially the Missouri Hereford weekend in Sedalia on your calendar. Camaraderie breeds ideas and success! From our families to yours, we wish you a very happy holiday season full

STATE ASSOCIATION UPDATE

Filling the Secretary/Treasurer Position Written by Glen Waters

Dear Fellow Hereford Breeders We are into the final point rows of 2023 now, and the pace is fast and furious…hold on for a jam-packed landing! I had the chance to see many of you recently in Kansas City for the American Hereford Association Annual Meetings and American Royal, where our National Show was held. It is a blessing for us to have these events in our backyard in Kansas City each year. If you have not attended either the annual meeting or national show recently, I would encourage you to place those dates on your 2024 calendar and make that a priority. As usual, Missouri Hereford breeders represented themselves and our state well on the national stage. For those of you who have attended the fall production sales that several Missouri Hereford breeders have hosted, you have seen the fruits of their labor of focused, targeted breeding programs. I want to thank these breeders and promoters of Hereford cattle in Missouri for highlighting our state and for their hard work. Congratulations to each of you! I want to make sure you mark December 2 and 3 on your calendar. These are the dates for our annual Missouri Hereford Weekend in Sedalia, MO. Saturday, December 2 will be our annual meeting and awards banquet. Sunday, December 3 will be the Missouri Opportunity sale. I can attest that our sale staff has been working hard to put together a compelling offering for you to view and consider adding to your home operations…I will plan to see each of you there! While these events are all important to our state and association, it is some people who have made our state association “go” for a generation that I want to take a few moments and recognize in this article. Matt and Barb Reynolds have served as our Missouri Hereford Secretary since many members of our association can remember. Associations like ours do not just run on their own, while it may seem that way. Matt and Barb have been the engine that make certain the activities and events we host each year happen timely and effectively. At the August Missouri Hereford Association (MHA) Board of Directors meeting, which coincided with the annual MHA

tour, Matt and Barb tendered their retirement letter from that post. Your board of directors voted to Glen Waters, Missouri Hereford Association – President accept that letter and to offer our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Matt and Barb for their dedication to our association. I now look forward to getting to visit with them in the barn at the State Fair or Opportunity sale and not discuss association business, but rather just discuss life, family, and good Hereford cattle! I would ask each of you, in your own way, to reach out to Matt and Barb to thank them for their years of service. I know they will appreciate hearing from you. That brings us to the next item of business, which is to recruit and hire the next MHA Secretary/Treasurer. Your MHA Board of Directors is actively seeking a candidate to fill the role Matt and Barb have filled so ably. That search is currently active. If you would like to learn more about the position, have an interest in it or have a candidate in mind that you would like to have considered, please reach out to me at:

Glen Waters, President, Missouri Hereford Association

660.707.3646 (cell) • gawaters@landolakes.com I will also report to you that Jon Black, MHA Vice President, has wrapped up his effort to lead the committee to consider how we want to move forward with marketing efforts for Missouri Hereford Association. We will be tabulating and analyzing those results and have discussion about that during the Missouri Hereford weekend in Sedalia. Please come prepared to be engaged in that process. I want to thank you for your interest in Hereford cattle and involvement in Missouri Herefords. We look forward to seeing each of you in Sedalia soon. If you have not had a membership in the Missouri Hereford Association in the past, I would encourage you to consider that and ask you to become a member in 2024. We are stronger together, and our objective is making a state association that helps you succeed in the Hereford business. If you have feedback or ideas on how our association can do that more effectively, please have that discussion with myself or your local MHA board member.

Back in August, Area 2 hosted the Hereford Field Day, and we visited farms and businesses around the area! If you see President – Mary Grace Warden, Halfway

anyone who helped put the Field Day on, please stop and thank them! There is a lot of behindthe-scenes action that goes into Kristin Waters, Missouri Junior planning these! Hereford Association Reporter Our next Hereford meeting will be during the Missouri Opportunity Sale! I hope everyone can try to make it to the annual banquet the first night and to stay to watch the sale and attend the meeting the next day!

A WORD FROM THE ADVISORS Reflecting on summer cattle shows Written by Hayley Miller and Marijane Miller By the time you are reading this, our juniors will have exhibited at the American Royal and are gearing up for the Missouri Opportunity Sale/Annual Banquet in December. Missouri has a great group of juniors, and our board is really stepping up to promote our state and the Hereford breed. If you haven’t already, please buy a raffle ticket (or several) from one of our juniors. They are raffling off a 5’ Weaver showbox. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Opportunity Sale in December. We would like to give special thanks to Brad and Sherry Hurst with H&H Show Supply for their help in obtaining the showbox and always supporting our juniors. They are such huge supporters of the Hereford breed. While we hate to see them “retire” from the show supply business, we are so appreciative and wish them good times and well wishes in their future endeavors. The juniors will be meeting next on Sunday, December 3 at 9:30 a.m. in Sedalia, Missouri. We will be starting the planning

for the 2024 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Grand Island, Nebraska. Juniors will need to pay their 2024 membership Hayley Miller, Missouri Junior Hereford Association Advisor dues at this time. Membership dues should be paid by April 15 to be eligible for awards. Juniors will be accepting donations for the silent auction at the Opportunity Sale. During the banquet, the juniors will auction off “advertising spots” for the state T-shirts worn during the opening ceremonies at JNHE. Outstanding junior members will also be recognized during the Annual Banquet. The juniors will be hosting a concession stand on Sunday of the Missouri Opportunity Sale. All juniors are asked to bring a 12 pack of soda or bottled water and individually packaged desserts for the concession stand. Wishing all a safe and happy fall! November 2023 | 15

THE NEW GENERATION The Missouri Hereford Association honors Kyle Lynn and Mark Hatfield as the 2022 Commercial Breeder of the Year Written by: Faye Smith, Rural Route Creations There are three synonyms to describe the commercial operation based in Salisbury, Mo., thanks to Kyle Lynn and Mark Hatfield – non-traditional, contemporary, and cutting edge. These values landed them the honor of receiving the 2022 Missouri Hereford Association (MHA) Commercial Breeder of the Year.

Transitions

Mark Hatfield is not a stranger to the commercial cattle industry. Alongside his parents, Harold and Kathryn, Hatfield and his wife Carla built a partnership operation that specialized in row crops and, at one time, 100 head of cows. After the year 1994, Harold was pushing to disperse his portion of the herd, allowing Mark to build his commercial cow battery and continue to sell heifers. Fast forward 23 years, came Kyle Lynn. After marrying Hatfield’s daughter Devon, Lynn found his way to become a partner after the retirement of Hatfield’s father. Taking his vast knowledge of production management from his experience with Fox Run Farms alongside his father, to his time at Valley Oaks, Lynn quickly found his place at the operation. 18 | MHN

“We asked them to come back and join the operation, which they did, and it provided a big influx of labor along with new ideas and a different way of viewing things,” Hatfield says. “I turned the cattle day-to-day decisions over to Kyle. It’s his area of expertise, and I trust him fully. He has impressed me from the first day with his maturity and knowledge of the cattle industry.” Partners and family go hand and hand with Lynn and Hatfield. Together, they run around 150 head of cattle. With Lynn taking on the daily farm tasks of running the cattle, Hatfield continues to work with their row crop operation, continuously crossing paths to ask for their opinions. “We trust each other’s judgment in each of our ‘expertise,’ but we still ask and value each other’s opinions on all decisions,” Lynn says. “We are business partners at the end of the day, and we are family; but the business isn’t as important as the family side. There’s mutual respect all the way around.”

Operations

Hatfield and Lynn’s operation purchases many open heifers from reputable breeders and past customers to build their herd each year. After bringing

them to the ranch, Lynn and Hatfield breed the heifers to ultimately sell to their customers that do not develop their own heifers but want quality genetics. By utilizing this method, Hatfield and Lynn have utilized artificial insemination to their advantage. After synchronizing to have both spring and fall calving heifers, Lynn and Hatfield ultrasound at pregnancy checking to ensure fetal development and fetal sex. This ensures both a successful end product for their customers and improved genetic value. “Artificial insemination has benefited us the most,” Hatfield says. “When we can add that much genetic value to the calf crop to our customers, I think that pays off big for them in the future.” When it comes to marketing their cattle, the operation looks to strictly utilize private-treaty sales, and social media to advertise to new and returning customers. Lynn and Hatfield believe in their clients and the relationships they have built with them over the years. “We have an established customer base that I built up over time, and Kyle has brought some new clients as well,” Hatfield says. “I don’t mind showing our cattle off at a sale barn. I feel like we have good quality cattle, but I feel that

Membership | Spotlight with our customer base, it’s more for them than us.” The unique business Lynn and Hatfield have built has given them a streamline for success. However, the issue of using clean-up bulls that weren’t doing the job became a problem for the operation. Lynn and Hatfield turned to utilizing several Hereford bulls to maximize their herd potential. “The Hereford bulls held up better structurally and were more of a rugged individual that gave our customers another option,” Lynn says. “We have to have a little diversity so that we can sell to a different customer base. That’s what the Herefords allow us to do. The F1 baldies have taken their operation by storm. Lynn and Hatfield have increased their use of the Hereford genetics due to the popularity and positive feedback from their customers. Both Lynn and Hatfield believe in the purebred Hereford breeders in their area and are thankful for their dedication to their customer base. “So, my advice would be if you are thinking about using Hereford genetics,

get to know those breeders,” Hatfield says. “Find one who has a program that raises cattle and has goals similar to what you want to accomplish, and build that relationship.”

Adaptability

Although every operation has its strengths, sometimes life can get in the way. Throughout the last year, drought and economic issues have impacted ranchers all over the United States. For Lynn and Hatfield, becoming willing to change their ways when it came to daily operations was crucial to staying on top of any abrupt changes. “Staying adaptable is what helped us,” Hatfield says. Adaptability isn’t the only factor that sets Hatfield and Lynn’s operation apart from the rest. Hatfield explains that having a youthful partner has allowed the operation to have a future longer than other counterparts. “What this operation can do, as I get older, is set Kyle up so that he can have a successful career here on our property and be able to accomplish what he wants in the industry,” Hatfield says.

The Hatfield and Lynn family have displayed many F1 Baldy’s for their customers over the past few years.

Vice-versa, Lynn believes in the power of profitability. By watching grain and cattle markets, and looking for different goals when it comes to purchasing power, Lynn understands the importance of putting business profits first and foremost. “My focus is profitability,” Lynn says. “We buy open heifers every year to breed, so our profitability hinges completely on the markets, whether it’s when we’re buying heifers, if they’re high, if we’re selling heifers and they’re low, or the feed costs we pay in between.” Being thankful for their success, Hatfield and Lynn have been honored and extremely appreciative to receive the award for the 2022 MHA Commercial Breeder of the Year. Although their partnership years are short, the goals and operational practices they have built together will last for years to come. “I think it’s a real testament,” Lynn says. “Mark has been breeding heifers as long as I’ve been alive. For him, I feel like it’s a testament to his dedication and work ethic. I’m just along for the ride.”

Kyle Lynn and Mark Hatfield work together to fix equipment during planting season.

The Asher Creek Boys bluegrass band entertain the Ozarks Written by: Faye Smith, Rural Route Creations Years and years have been spent behind the piano for the McMillen brothers, Grant, Rhett, Landon, and Tanner of Walnut Grove, Mo. By their mother’s request, many evenings were unwillingly spent playing tunes with their piano teacher. At the time it may have been a bother, but the endless keystrokes all sparked a love for producing and enjoying music. That spark continued as the boys grew up within their church. Watching their family members and congregation play traditional choir songs, built a foundation of appreciating music theory. Through gospel tunes and bluegrass CDs in their grandfather’s truck, the brothers built what is now called The Asher Creek Boys. “We kind of fell in love with it from there,” Landon says. “When we started playing together, and as we got better, we became passionate about it.” Although The Asher Creek Boys had a love for bluegrass music from the beginning, after watching a band play locally, they discovered how they could build their sound as a band. “We went to the Ozark Empire Fair, and there was a bluegrass band playing there,” Grant says. “They were a band by the name of Poa Annua, based out of Willard. Our mother asked them where they learned everything, and they pointed us toward a family of guys in Springfield.” The shop in Springfield sold instruments and specialized in teaching bluegrass-style music. The brothers began taking classes and building a relationship with the owners, and the next thing they knew the band was born. “We all started learning together,” says Grant. For the past eight years, the Asher Creek Boys have developed their interest in playing bluegrass and gospelinfluenced music. Grant, the oldest brother, decided to learn how to play

guitar–leading each of the brothers to pick up their instruments, Rhett on the fiddle, Landon on the banjo, and Tanner on the mandolin. In addition to the brothers, they have a fifth member, Michael Downs on the bass. Months of learning their craft went by. After a push from their parents to play for their church, a newfound love for playing in public grew for the group. Church after church, festival after festival, benefit after benefit, the group has managed to play for many bluegrass enthusiasts throughout the Ozarks, including one special performance at the Missouri State FFA Convention. “It had a pretty high tension,” Landon says. “We were all super nervous; we’d never played anywhere near that kind of a crowd before. It was kind of a rush, and we got up there and we got it done.” Landon admits the group played Seminole Wind the best they ever had under that pressure of a crowd. He attributes his brother Rhett to nailing his performance. “The crowd kind of blew up over it, and they were nice to us up there,” says Landon. “It was just a whole lot of fun.” The boys described each of their favorite concerts with one factor the same across the board–the energy of the environment. Their memorable experience often stems from the energy they feel from the crowd. “The crowd reaction is a big part of playing live,” Rhett says. “I think that helps make which places stand out to you where you play. If people are quiet, even when they clap at the end of the song and stuff versus if they’re hooping and hollering during the song and clapping after breaks and stuff, I feel like that makes a big difference.” Through it all, the McMillen brothers are grateful for their opportunities to showcase their musical skills. There is a strong connection between bluegrass and its agricultural background, certainly

a fond tribute to their farming lifestyle. Through their ventures showing Herefords or being active in FFA, the people in the industry have supported them through it all. “The people we meet help us get our name out there and just further support and encouragement for what we do,” Grant says. The brothers are avid Hereford breeders. Alongside their family’s operation, Toothacre Ranch, the McMillens spend time working to breed animals to take to shows around the state of Missouri, showcasing their hard work and dedication to their breeding program. However, balancing the band and showing cattle can be difficult at times according to the boys. “It can be tough sometimes to balance everything, but if you know how to manage your time, then you can sure get it done,” Grant says. “I think you find people say they maybe don’t have time for something, but I think if you want to, you can make time for what you’re passionate about.” As for the future of The Asher Creek Boys, more and more gigs have been set up for the fall and winter of 2023, as well as the potential of recording a CD with many of the hits they play in public. As they have a strong passion for the music industry, the boys agree that the support from their family and friends helps them stay excited about their future endeavors. “I’d say we’ve always been surrounded by a lot of people who are involved in music, whether it be our dad or people at church, or, I know for me, probably a big inspiration was our FFA advisor Bruce Blakemore,” Grant says. “I know he’s been a big inspiration as far as our music goes. There’s been other people and friends that we’ve played with, and they help in keeping you going and giving you a passion for what you do.” November 2023 | 27

BRANDING MORE THAN THE CATTLE

How to develop a business brand for your cattle operation Written by Faye Smith, Rural Route Creations

What is a brand? For most cattlemen, it means a unique sign that is frozen or burned onto the hide of their cattle. In the business world, it’s creating a brand identity where the development of the voice and vision of the business is executed through visual appearances and consistent messaging. But how can ranchers develop their brand identity for their operation? One of the most important pieces to curating a business is brand identity. Without creating a “personality” for the business, it’s difficult to be able to attract and interact with customers regularly. Creating an identity allows for the business to be memorable and impacts your overall marketing efforts. Breaking down the many assets to building a brand makes creating an impressionable brand easy. What is the mission of your business? Taking the time to define what the purpose of your operation is, and how it will serve potential customers is critical to building your mission statement. By using a short and strong message, your mission

28 | MHN

statement is what other branding assets reflect, so making it encompass your whole business is important. Now that the mission is set, it’s time to develop your target audience. Who is your ideal customer? How would your brand be perceived by them? Understanding the target group of individuals your business would like to attract is essential to your marketing efforts. Offering an experience that is tailored to each target audience aids with the overall effectiveness of your business. How do you make your business unique? In addition to establishing a mission, reflecting on the values and qualities of the operation you are creating, builds a bigger brand persona. Do you believe in your family’s years of genetic progress? Maybe the utilization of DNA selection has elevated your herd. These values are ones that not only give you an edge but allow differentiation from your competition. In other words, what is your niche? Building the foundation of the brand leads us to the final piece, the

visual assets associated with the brand. Establishing the values, mission, and target audience influences how you create your visuals and is important to having clear messaging across your brand image. If you own a more traditional cattle operation, wouldn’t you agree to have your logo and color palette reflect that feeling? Telling the story through imagery and color patterns helps build that relationship with a potential client. By creating these pieces for your brand, integrate them throughout every piece of your business. Not only through advertising and sales but also through how you interact with potential customers regularly. Maybe for you, it could be reaching out to past customers about their successes with their upcoming calf crop or donating to your local 4-H club or junior association for brand awareness. No matter what, letting yourself be approachable and continuing the brand identity is important to building your business. Remember, a strong brand is more than the iron sitting in your barn.

FIELD DAY PERSPECTIVE

Missouri Hereford Association holds its annual field day Members of the Missouri Hereford Association (MHA) traveled from around the state of Missouri to Chillicothe, Mo., the center of District 2. Throughout the day, attendees were able to visit with multiple breeders, industry professionals and businesses to strengthen their knowledge of the breed, and the greater beef cattle industry. To begin the day, patrons met at the Litton Agri-Science Learning Center, the agricultural campus of Chillicothe High School (CHS). Rusty Black, a former Agricultural Instructor at CHS gave a background lesson on the Litton Center. To kick start the tours of the day, Samantha Graves, a representative of Trans Ova Genetics, gave a lesson on the embryo transfer process and educational insights of the Trans Ova facility that is located north of Chillicothe. Members joined Graves in a tour of the facility to learn more about the business’ practices and reproductive technologies to breeders looking to advance and extend superior genetics. Lunch and fellowship continued at the Litton Center. Lance Martin, the Matt Reynolds welcomes attendees.

current CHS Agriculture Instructor took attendees on a tour of the center. This tour highlighted the school farm and fairgrounds, the expo center and the classrooms. Members were able to understand the events held at the center, as well as visit with current CHS FFA members and their livestock SAE projects. Waters Farm and Black Label Genetics displayed a select group of females from their programs and spoke to the groups about genetics, goals of their operations and animals in upcoming sales. After spending the day in Chillicothe, members headed to Huntsville, where the afternoon session was held with Reynolds Herefords. Alongside Reynolds, Circle R Cattle Co. had cattle on display for attendees. Members were able to hear from Dan Reynolds of Circle R Cattle Co. and Matt Reynolds of Reynolds Herefords where they both discussed their cattle operations and family history with the Hereford breed. Other speakers that gathered in Huntsville were Jared Royer from Cattle Visions, describing the business’ progress

within the cattle reproduction industry. Dr. Mac Wilt from the Paris Vet Clinic spent time discussing current issues cattle producers are having with health and disease management. Finally, Mike John, the 2006 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President, spent time talking with the group about marketing trends within the cattle industry. John also highlighted the status and demand of traceability from buyers and packers in the end segment of the industry. We’d like to thank our sponsors of the door prizes which included, Tom Tompson with The Green Stuff, Trans Ova Genetics, Sydenstricker Nobe Partners, Resor Seed, MFA, and Tractor Supply. Thank you to everyone that traveled to the annual field day hosted by District 2. A special thank you to MHA director Jon Black for all his efforts in organizing a great day for our Missouri breeders. We are thankful for all of our attendees and hope everyone enjoyed the day.

During many stops, participants were able to view groups of cattle brought in by several breeders across the state.

Mike John with MFA discussed cattle marketing trends.
