Words from the
Editors
As the fall season begins, along with harvest of our crops, we tend to focus on the harvest of all aspects of our operation. Relationships are harvested, calves are weaned, our show successes from months of work are won, and our sale profits are made. We are a diverse breed and region with some focused more on the show ring, others on selling the best new herd sire, and others who receive the fruits of their labor by weaning off the most consistent, heaviest calves. Hereford value is in all aspects of the industry.
“
Hereford cattle add value to every chain, and ask yourself if you are involved enough to gain each of these rewards.
The summer show run of the Missouri State Fair and Ozark Empire Fair along with the spectacular representation of the Missouri Hereford Juniors at the Junior National Hereford Expo in Madison, Wisconsin, are features in this issue. Countless hours, breeding decisions and hard work have gone into these exhibitors displaying their cattle for all the public to see and for one man or woman’s opinion to be heard. The representation at all three shows should be commended. A special congratulations to juniors Jaden Riley on his supreme purebred steer at the Missouri State Fair and Tory Miller on winning third overall supreme purebred heifer in the junior show at Ozark Empire Fair.
”
The fall is most known for the upcoming sale season and The American Royal in Kansas City. As sales get started there is a bit of curiosity as to how or if the market will change and a special excitement to see calves developing from the newest herd sires. To those advertisers in the Missouri Hereford News, we thank you for trusting our publication with your sale marketing. We wish you all the best as you sell your program this fall. For spring calving programs, the fall is a dramatic measuring tool of their recent calf crop. In this issue you will find some options for both marketing your feeder calves and retaining ownership through a backgrounding facility in Rolla. Consider your options, talk to others and ask questions. Hereford cattle add value to every chain, and ask yourself if you are involved enough to gain each of these rewards. If you have any marketing needs this fall, be sure to contact us! We would love to be involved in your program’s goals for the future.

State Association
Update
Missouri State Fair True excitement, involvement, opportunity and enthusiasm are the words I think of as summer is winding down and fall begins. The one word I Matt Reynolds think about when envisionMissouri Hereford Association ing these actions is—PeoSecretary/Treasurer ple. It is truly the people involved in this breed that make it so great. When you have a group of people that are enthusiastic, the excitement creates opportunity and everyone wants to get involved. It was another exciting Missouri State Fair where nearly 200 head of Herefords were shown and nearly 200 steaks and hamburgers were served at the well-attended annual steak fry after the open show. Just maybe the most exciting thing was seeing a Hereford steer shown by Jaden Riley named overall purebred steer in the 4-H steer show. We saw a lot of new faces in the Hereford barn this year which just builds that number of enthusiast. I had several cattlemen from other breeds walk into our barn and ask, “What’s going on over here?” I said to the first gentleman with concern, “What do you mean?” The cattleman replied The cattleman replied that that he had never seen he had never seen so many so many really good really good Herefords here Herefords here before, before, and a lot of people and a lot of people too. too. What a great feeling!

The first of seven annual Hereford sales of the fall is just days away. Check the events calendar for dates. Also, we have several breeders involved in online sales. There will be over 600 Herefords in Missouri offered for sale at public auction this fall. Please take time to attend as many as you can.
“
Opportunities The word opportunity, has To me the word “opportunity” has a lot of meaning lots of meaning... this time of year, starting with the opportunity each of you have to nominate breeders for the annual awards presented at the annual meeting and awards banquet the first full weekend in December. Each Director will be working hard to get breeders nominated to the selection committee. Please send your nominations to me by phone, e-mail or mail by October 20, 2016. The awards include purebred breeder of the year, commercial breeder of the year and hall of fame inductees.

Thank you to the many breeders from Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois for consigning to the 2016 Opportunity Sale hosted by the MHA. I invite each of you to be at the annual meeting and Opportunity Sale in Sedalia. In the past 15 years, it has grown to be the one event you don’t want to miss. From electing new board members, getting annual reports, enjoying a great steak dinner and a large awards program, you won’t want to miss the night before the Opportunity Sale. As we kick off the 2016 Opportunity Sale we will be selling select pages in the 2017-2018 membership directory. The 2015-2016 directory was our largest ever. It is a great way to get your operation showcased to many breeders and commercial cattlemen. We print between 1500 to 2000 copies that are picked up at events and local livestock auctions around the area. By being a dues paid member in 2016, you will be listed in the membership listing. Your membership is also posted on our website moherefords.org that is seen all over the world. Thank you to all for being apart of this great breed, and I hope to see you at the sales and events this fall! Sincerely, – Matt

Marketing–Your Move The seedstock cattle business is filled with numerous challenges, responsibilities and pleasures. It is fun to expound on the pleasures—a great set of calves out of the new herdsire or AI bull, winning shows, weaning calves at an all-time high or hitting a home run on a flush of your great cow. A great deal of pride is felt after reviewing your calf crop with a friend or client and they request you let them know when you wean because they will be back to buy. Having a sold-out pen of bulls or replacement females also ranks right up there on the pleasure meter.
tion—getting your genetics marketed for your customer. Most breeders are real good at the first definition in the marketing realm. Accomplishing the second definition doesn’t get the focus now but will probably be more important as we go forward in the cattle business.

Value-Added Backgrounding Backgrounding facilities can often be overlooked when evaluating the segments of the beef industry. For many producers, selling calves at weaning has been a tradition for generations, a business move that has allowed for quicker money in your pocket and less production time. For cattle producer Frank Barnitz, he can’t imagine NOT keeping his calves around after weaning. Owning and operating Net Worth Feeds and Feeding located southeast of Rolla, Missouri, Barnitz can background and mix feed for 1,000 head of cattle at anytime. Around since 2001, a new facility was built in 2015, allowing for more cattle and a retained ownership option until cattle reach around 800 pounds.

Hanging those calves on the rail allows producers to achieve and reap the benefits of superior carcass animals.
“Respiratory and clostridium are main ones,” said Barnitz. “Pre-weaned steers or heifers with two rounds of vaccinations, once prior to weaning and one at weaning, allow calves to come in healthy and take to feed without being interrupted for health treatment.”

Co-mingled by weight class, weaned steers and heifers are fed in a dry lot setting of concentrates much like a feedlot. Cattle gain 2 3/4 pounds to 3 pounds per day, allowing for lots of growth, but to also fully finish at the feedlot for the final production stage.
Barnitz went on to explain that, “Everyone benefits from having larger groups of cattle to market. We encourage producers that aren’t used to this type of marketing to enter a few head in the beginning and work their way up as they get more comfortable in doing this.” Lots of cattle are being produced in Missouri, but cattle aren’t currently staying in the state after weaning. Net Worth Feeds and Feeding thinks they have the program that will allow CHB to buy large groups of calves all at once. Most generally, Barnitz and Ward agree that keeping these cattle in Missouri will put more dollars in producers’ pockets. “By trying to add value to feeder cattle, calves won’t leave at weaning,” said Ward. “If we just allow them to stay longer, grow more, and then be placed into a feedlot, we will capture the most value out of them as fat cattle.” Calves are co-mingled by weight class in a dry lot setting.

The Missouri Cattlemen’s Association once again served the Missouri State Fair-goers at the MCA Beef House. 20,677 people ate beef at the restaurant during the fair. 9,080 ribeyes, 6,732 burgers, 1,209 hot dogs, 2,780 BBQ beef sandwiches and 876 steak salads were served. That’s more than 15,000 pounds. Missouri undoubtedly loves beef! 700 MCA members volunteered to make this possible!

The 80th Ozark Empire Fair in Springfield, Missouri is a must-attend event of the summer for the SW Missouri region which began in 1937. “Memories in the Making” commemorated the fair’s milestone anniversary this year. With what started as a WPA $40,000 grant, the fairgrounds was created as a permanent home for the annual fair. In 1940, the word “free” was removed from the fair’s name, as a charge of 15 cents to enter was implemented. Over the years, many new events and buildings have evolved. But, memories of A&W root beer, eating corn dogs, watching great entertainment and of course the Hereford cattle show continue to be traditions the fair keeps today.

Life is Simple A blackberry cobbler has to be the most delicious creation that ever came into contact with human taste buds. I can’t remember the first time one touched mine, but I know it was love at first bite. When the last of June and first of July of my childhood rolled around, I instinctively knew that a cobbler would appear from out of the oven, Jerry Crownover a generous portion placed in a bowl, and then covered with thick, fresh cream skimmed off the top of the milk made by our Jersey cow earlier that morning. There was nothing better. Unfortunately, when I reached the age of six, or so, I was expected to go along with my parents to the blackberry patch to help pick the delectable fruits. These blackberry bushes were most usually found in an old fence row or along the edge of the woods, which also produced an abundant crop of ticks and chiggers that were roughly the same size as the berries. It was then, that I understood why blackberries tasted so good; any food that creates that much pleasure has to be accompanied by an equal or greater amount of pain and misery. The morning after a ‘berry-picking’ would usually find my body looking like it had been run through the de-feathering machine at a poultry processing plant. All the scratching and clawing of the tick bites had left my legs, arms, and other assorted appendages as raw and red as an unripened blackberry. Home remedies to rid my body of any remaining chiggers would include alternating applications of coal oil, turpentine, rubbing alcohol, and even lard as a last desperate attempt to kill the vermin that were determined to stay attached. A blow-torch couldn’t have burned my skin any hotter than the home remedies—and probably wouldn’t have gotten rid of the parasites any better. No matter what was used, I still itched…and scratched…for several more days. But, the eventual payoff, in the form of that blackberry cobbler, was still wonderful.

I was thinking about all this last week, when my wife and I went to a neighbor’s U-pick blackberry operation about 4 miles from our farm. There, we picked two gallons of beautiful berries in about twenty minutes, from bushes that didn’t have a thorn on them. The vines were all attached to trellises in neat rows that allowed us to pick from a standing position the whole time, and the areas between the rows were mowed like a lawn and, evidently, treated with something that deters ticks and chiggers, because I didn’t get a single critter on me.

Back at home, Judy baked a delicious blackberry cobbler that was every bit as good as the ones I remembered from my childhood. As we both sat down, and began to devour the steaming treat, Judy asked, “What’s wrong with you?” “Nothing, why?” “You’re scratching between every bite.” “Just blackberry flashbacks.” The American Royal Crossword key from page 51: Across – 1 rodeo, 6 cattle, 8 agricultural, 9 Hale, 10 Hereford; Down – 2 October, 3 barbecue, 4 Stockyards, 5 Missouri, 7 Saddlebred

Hereford Member Spotlight
AHA Board Review Greetings Hereford Enthusiasts, Serving on the AHA board thus far has been an enjoyable time, and I am honored be to be able to serve the association and it’s members. We officially meet as an entire board four times a year with the bulk of the ground work for board action being conducted through committees using conference calls or face-time when possible. To go along with those meetings, I personally, like the camaraderie among the directors at Hereford events. The satisfaction of helping implement new initiatives that have the potential of improving profitability of AHA members is very rewarding. Our core business is to provide registry services and do so in the most efficient way possible. The “My Herd” program has been a game changer in the registry and transfer of Hereford cattle. This program has been well received by our membership. Currently, about 80% of registrations are completed on “My Herd”. AHA members can register and transfer cattle instantaneously which helps reduce association overhead. One of our goals, as a board, it to continue the promotion of “My Herd” to those not currently enrolled.
Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) and marketing to name a few. The CHB program exists solely to create more profit for Hereford breeders. By marketing CHB up the food chain to wholesalers and Bob Thompson retailers, the result American Hereford Association Board of Director is “pulled demand” mainly for Hereford bulls in the commercial production sector. I’m glad to say that CHB has experienced in the last year a remarkable turnaround in operations and product sales. A major focus in 2017 and beyond will be to keep the CHB program viable and to build on these recent successes.
Beyond the basics of registry and member services, the main goal of the AHA is to improve breeder profitability through programs such as breed improvement and genetic advancement,
The Hereford Feeder Calf program is relatively new and is designed to identify potential CHB qualified cattle at weaning. It helps producers get better prices for their feeder calves no matter if they are backgrounded or sold at weaning. For more information about accessing the CHB Feeder Calf programs, contact Shane Bedwell, AHA Chief Operating Officer and Director of Breed Improvement, or Trey Befort, AHA Director of Commercial Programs, at 816-8423757.
I was recently asked what the board is requesting of the membership. One of the most important activities a member can participate in are programs for genetic improvement data such as Whole Herd Reporting. The AHA needs as much data as possible to measure and document genetic value and improve breeding predictability. Obviously DNA is important. AnothRegistered Herefords er activity members are encouraged to participate in is the young sire test Mike and Myra McCorkill similar to tests conducted 152 E Dade 92 • Greenfield, MO 65661 at Olsens, Simplot, Stah417-637-5228 417-838-2073 leys and perhaps others. So far, nothing gives the association better data for Andy, Jenn & Molly McCorkill predictably that the actual 417-838-0583 progeny of a sire. With that said, all the feedback that producers can provide Brant, Erin and Knox Harvey improves the genetic 417-214-0313 database and furthermore, helps producers in making Bulls for sale sired by: breeders decisions. It also adds value to breeder’s KJ C&L J119 Logic 023R ET cattle who participate. Whitehawk 157KBeefmaker 896U

with a calving rate EPD. The board engages professional geneticists who use a multitude of trait data that is mostly supplied by registered breeder participation through the data they submit. This can be a lengthy process to insure the EPD is as valid as possible to help producers make breeding decisions. I was also recently asked what the number one goal of the board of directors is for the coming year. The answer might be different depending on which director you ask. There are so many goals to choose from, but I can tell you that the AHA board was unanimous in a decision to focus more of our current resources and staff in contacting and interacting with more commercial breeders. If we can educate and make the case for Hereford genetics in a cross-breeding program, the likelihood of creating more demand for Hereford bulls increases. As we all know, the Hereford business has been good. The biggest challenge we have going forward is keeping up the momentum and accelerating the use of Hereford genetics in the nation’s cowherd. The challenge for us as breeders is to continually improve our genetics to meet the expectation of our customers. I encourage each of you to take advantage of the AHA programs available to help meet this challenge. I also encourage as many breeders as possible to attend the AHA Annual Meeting in Kansas City on October 29. There will be a positive story to celebrate. Complete reports from all AHA committees will be made, new directors elected, Hall of Fame inductees announced along with other honorees. Hope to see you there! Best Regards, – Bob Thompson, American Hereford Association Board of Director 2014-2018 and owner of Glengrove Farm of Rolla
