40 years of stacked pedigrees

October 20, 2016

Welcome to our Dispersal Sale It doesn’t seem like that long ago that my parents decided to sell our Guernsey herd and get into registered Herefords in southwest Missouri. I was thirteen at the time and have owned Herefords ever since. There has been at least one Biglieni registering Herefords in North America since 1965. I am pleased to say this dispersal will not mark the end of that era as my brother Tom along with his wife, Jill and daughter Inaya have a small elite herd in the St Louis, Missouri area. Thanks Tom for taking the torch. The opportunity to come to Canada in 1975 to fit some cattle for Donn and Sylvia Mitchell of Klondike Farms and show at Canada’s major cattle show, Canadian Western Agribition, was an opportunity I had always dreamed of. The Klondike cows had a very solid reputation throughout North America, and Klondike was gaining worldwide recognition with the help from Donn’s association with Glen Klippenstein at Glenkirk Farms in Missouri. After that first October trip to Klondike, Donn invited me back the next spring to fit some sale bulls. He then asked me to stay and help finish calving after which I was asked to help with the breeding and pasture management of the Klondike cowherd. I had worked sales and shows for the last two and a half years in at least 35 states so it was nice to have a chance to stay in one spot for a change. Truth be known, I would have paid to work with those Klondike cows. When I moved to Canada on a more permanent (legal) basis, to work at Klondike Farms full time, I was allowed to bring all of my possessions up duty free as long as they were with me at the time of crossing. So I brought up my new dually pickup, a gooseneck trailer and six months’ supply of Red Man chewing tobacco (it wasn’t available in Canada then). I had sold my Herefords in Missouri to pay for this unit and had then bought a couple of Hereford bred heifers in Canada, a Queenie Creek heifer from the Agribition sale and the other purchased from Henderson, Engelot, Lees and Lees sale in Regina (see the Jan 17F cow family). That was the start of WLB Livestock in Canada. Nancy and I married thirty six years ago, five years after I first came to Canada. She came from a strong Charolais background and was born and raised around Carberry, Manitoba. When asked if she wanted WLB Livestock to also raise Charolais she replied “Herefords are what you know, so that’s what we will raise.” She’s been a very loyal Hereford enthusiast ever since and truly the backbone of WLB Herefords. Travis and Anthony, our two sons, were raised with Herefords from day one. Nancy would bundle the boys up and take them with her when doing the chores, even when it was 40 below. Nancy kept our boys busy with their Herefords which they used to pay for their extended education and some of the toys their teenage minds thought they should have. Junior Hereford activities provincially and federally along with 4-H played an important part in their development. The lessons learned and the skills practiced during their junior years helped shape who they are. Travis is the lead mechanic for Mazer Implements in Shoal Lake, MB, and Anthony is the western Canada ag marketing representative for JCB Canada, living north of Vermillion, AB.

Bev Mickelson and Nancy at Shell River

A pivotal role in the direction of WLB was the day that Earl and Bev Mickelson of Shell River Herefords, Roblin, Manitoba, pulled me aside at Agribition and asked why we hadn’t ever come to look at their cowherd. They also asked if we had ever considered taking some cows on shares. It was a couple months later that we did get up to see the Shell River cowherd and it did indeed prove to be “a trip worth making.” I hope you will agree once you have looked through this catalogue.

WLB Livestock has always been a family operation. Once the boys left home to pursue their dreams it became a “Mom and Pop” operation. With a more limited work force we adopted the philosophy of keep it simple and efficient. Each calf crop produced had to be better and more marketable than the last. Each replacement female kept had to be a better producer than her mom. If not, they went to town to make room for one that could be more productive. Our cowherd philosophy has always centered on the fact that a bull calf will put more demands upon his dam than a heifer calf will, so those cows that wean off a top end bull calf and get bred back on cycle were the ones we held in high esteem and built the WLB herd around. Our motto has been, “Bulls are our business but our females keep us in business.” Through the years WLB has grown not only in numbers but in worldwide recognition with WLB genetics now working in over seventeen countries around the globe. WLB has the distinction of having bred both the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Polled Hereford Females at the 2012 World Hereford Conference Show at Olds, AB, as well as the first Miss Hereford World Champion. WLB genetics have also garnered many Canadian Nation- Travis, age 9 and Anthony, age 6 at the Manitoba al Championships along the way. Pulserama Junior Hereford Show After seeing the enjoyment Donn Mitchell received from watching the entire Klondike cowherd working at Glenkirk Farms and Saddle Valley and through one of many Hereford discussions Nancy and I had over the years, we both agreed that if our children did not want to carry on with the livestock operation then we would have a dispersal sale while we were still able to enjoy watching what other Hereford enthusiasts did with our life’s work, just as Donn Mitchell was able to do. While we would love to hang on to them for a few more years, now is the right time to turn our Herefords over to those of you that possess the enthusiasm and energy that will propel Herefords into their rightful place in the future. We strongly feel the young ones in this sale may represent the biggest leap WLB has ever made in one generation. We hope that when you see our offering you will agree that the generations of stacked up WLB genetics provided in this special event can help you achieve your goals and ultimately provide Nancy and myself with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction for our half century of working with this great breed. Nancy and I invite you to join us for this special life altering event. This dispersal is not the end of anything but it will be the beginning of many things. When you walk through the cattle prior to the sale we hope you feel that it was indeed a trip worth making. Nancy and I hope you will join us on October 20th either in person or online. Be sure to contact us if you have any questions. Sincerely,

Bill & Nancy Lindsay, Austin, Travis, and Owen

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR U.S. BREEDERS Getting your purchases home from Canada:

Through our year s of being in the purebred cattle business we have expor ted a number of cattle into the United States and are familiar with the U.S. customs procedure and documentation needed. We will be happy to bear this responsibility for the cattle you purchase out of this disper sal sale. Please read the following infor mation and feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

Deliver y to the U.S.:

We will be happy to assist with the paperwor k and getting your purchases across the border. U.S. buyer s will be charged $350 for the fir st animal purchased and $150 per animal after that. This will cover any veterinarian, customs and broker charges. WLB will cover any additional costs above this amount including tr ucking to the U.S. por t of entr y at Dunseith, ND. This fee must be paid at time of settlement. This charge is based upon the assumption that all U.S. bound cattle will cross the border in one shipment. It is imperative that prompt settlement be made to guarantee your purchases will be par t of this shipment. U.S. cattle remaining at WLB due to late payment will be charged for all additional expor t costs involved in creating a separate shipment.

Arranging transpor tation for your purchases:

We will assume that you as a buyer would like us to ar range transpor tation for your purchases unless otherwise stated at time of settlement. Tr ucking from the U.S. por t of entr y, Dunseith, ND, to the buyer’s final destination will be billed directly to the buyer. Lathrop Tr ucking in Illinois is a continental car rier we have used with satisfaction in the past. They have assisted us in getting cattle as far east as Nor th Carolina, south into Texas and Alabama and west to Califor nia as well as many states in between. Knills Transpor t in Ontario is a Canadian car rier that has assisted us in getting cattle to the Nor theaster n United States.

Exchange rate:

The exchange rate between the Canadian and U.S. dollar offer U.S. breeder s a definite bidding advantage. At the time this catalogue was being printed a $10,000 Canadian purchase would cost you $7,900 in U.S. dollar s, which would have provided a $2100 discount on your purchase. Note it has fluctuated up and down over the last six months. Because of this constantly unpredictable change, the exchange rate used for this sale will be announced the mor ning of the sale and will be the one used for U.S. payments made before November 14, 2016. Payments received after this date will be charged the cur rent exchange rate at the time payment is received.

It is with great enthusiasm for Hereford cattle in Nor th America that Nancy and Bill Biglieni bring for th years of hardwor k and love for the breed as they completely disperse their Hereford cow herd. WLB Livestock has long been a headquar ter s for herd bulls, and behind those sires are great females that will go on to work in any program. Unique to most operations, WLB has excelled over the years in the show ring both with their own cattle and those of their customers, the later being much more of an indicator of their success. At the 2012 World Hereford Conference, WLB bred both the Grand and Reser ve Grand Champion Polled Hereford Females. Commercial breeders alike have sought WLB genetics, considering them an industry leader when shopping for Hereford bulls. The cow herd is big bodied, easy fleshing and made to work on grass. The cows are designed to wean heavy calves and be very efficient in doing so. Impor tant in today’s industry, the cattle haven’t been selected for single trait genetics, but instead they have kept ever y impor tant trait in mind. Phenotype has been a key element, as Bill and Nancy have had a type and kind that they want to breed, and it’s the most demanded type that producers are looking for. WLB star ted their Hereford operation in 1976, and since that day they have worked for this sale, dispersing their year s of dedication in raising high quality cattle. Long days and sometimes long nights have been a theme at WLB, as the couple has put their whole hear ts into this program they now offer in its entirety. It’s not ver y often you’ve had a chance to buy a sought-after WLB female, and on Oct. 20 you have this chance! These genetics have worked all over the wor ld and will be an added bonus to any program. If myself or any of the sale staff can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us for an honest opinion of the cattle. See you sale day!

Homozygous Polled Powerball represents the growth and progress we like to see in a developing herd bull. His bir th represented nothing more than an ideal problem free bir th out of a first calf heifer. As a developing calf, Powerball was right on pace with his contemporaries but in muscle and maturity he was soon leaving them in the dust. By the time he was 120 days old you knew there was something different and unique about him. After calving two calf crops, we feel Powerball’s calving ease rivals that of his sire and qualifies him as a sure-fire heifer bull. Powerball’s maturing daughters have an authentic cow look to them. The maturity, libido, calving ease and performance displayed by his sons make him a serious option for those of you that make your living selling bulls. Powerball’s outcross pedigree presents a new genetic alternative. As you can see from the family members displayed on the following pages, Powerball is no accident. Quality and goodness runs deep in his line. Powerball sells as follows: Full possession with 100% Worldwide semen rights including the following semen inventory.

Lot 6 is the mother of WLB Easy Street 100Z, the high selling bull in our 2013 bull sale and the sire of some good ones in this sale. Her WLB Fresh 7M dam was one of our favorites and could pump out very salable progeny. Her Powerball daughter, lot 6A is her first heifer calf and has the depth and dimension to take you places. • Ultra-sounded safe to May 4 ser vice to WLB Winchester Powerball 27A. Exposed from April 14 to May 13 to WLB Winchester Powerball 27A then exposed from May 26 to July 12 to WLB Mr Canada 10Z 15B.

WLB 25C Jan 17F family The Jan 17F cow family has been very instrumental in the building of the WLB program. It is a line that stems from Blair Athol Chalet 94J, the female I mentioned in our welcome that was purchased from Blair Athol Polled Herefords out of the Henderson, Engelot, Lees and Lees sale. Milk and good udders has been consistently present in this family and when we added NJW Vaquero 25C, it just got stronger and more influential. This is the family behind WLB Global 50S.

The Jan 17F cow family has carried on the strong Canadian standard established by one of our original foundation cows. Good udders and rich milk have never been lacking with this line. Lot 7 is a maternal sister to WLB Global 50S. You will have a number of his daughters to choose from in this sale. You also have the influence of the Blanche 127J cow family through lot 7’s sire, WLB Quaker 21T. Milk and body mass are increased through this line. If you are looking for that cer tified donor to build your program around backed by two cow families long on a tradition of high standards, lot 7 should be on that list. • Ultra-sounded safe to May 7 ser vice to WLB Mr Canada 10Z 15B. Lot 12 With the drought we went through in our immediate area last summer and fall we temporarily ran Powerball with the yearling heifers in the creek bottom so we wouldn’t have to dry lot him after our breeding season. Unbeknown to us lot 12 had dumped ser vice and was rebred while with Powerball. I would have to say this unplanned mating turned out rather nice. She will make a good addition to any fall calving program. Lot 12 will sell with her WLB Winchester Powerball 27A heifer calf at her side. She will have been exposed to him up to sale day.

WLB 9615 Tulip 11J family With our friendship and having a joint production sale with the DeCorby’s of Circle D Polled Herefords we developed a strong admiration for the Wrangler 832W daughters we had seen. So, it didn’t surprise us when a lot of other Nor th American Hereford breeders developed that same like for them. In our search to find what we felt was the best Wrangler son to AI to we settled on MC Ranger 9615. He clicked real well with a JSF Devo 23C daughter that was in the top of our herd at that time producing what is now the largest cow family offered in this disper sal. The females from this line continue to show the attractive profile of that Devo cow and the broody appearance that the Wranglers were so well known for. One of the bulls produced from this line, WLB Fresh 035J 7M is a direct son of WLB Tulip 11J. Fresh not only contributed greatly to the maternal foundation at WLB but also made selling Hereford bulls to cow/calf producers a lot easier. The Fresh semen that sells will offer you a great oppor tunity to infuse the Tulip 11J influence into your program through AI.

Make sure you follow the mother, daughter, granddaughter line ups in this Tulip 11J cow family. It’s pretty neat the way the power of production builds and builds through each generation. We have long respected her dam, that’s why she is still here at WLB. We have grown to admire this Embassy daughter very much. She’s compiling an admirable track record for such a young cow. However it looks like, not only will she out produce her dam, lot 14, but it also looks like she will be out produced by her two-year-old Lego daughter, lot 18(see lot 18A Tonka bull calf).

Lot 24 has been a prolific bull producer as the lot 25 yearling heifer is the only heifer she has produced so far. Her attractive coon-eyed bull calf would be the heifer bull we would be hanging onto if we were Female carrying on with the WLB program. Shell River Nickie 17C family Shell River Nickie 17C was in the first group of heifers that came down from, Shell River Herefords. She will always remain in our minds as one of the heaviest milking, best uddered, Hereford cows that we have wor ked with. Her influence here at WLB is strong and long lasting. From a performance perspective her ancestr y can bring in the big bull calves. There has been more than one bull calf that was either our top selling bull or among our high sellers. From a show ring perspective the Grand Champion Polled Hereford Female at the 2012 World Hereford Conference show in Calgary was a descendant of this very productive cow family.

Shell River Nancy 17G family The Nancy 17G cow family has to be given credit for passing on some of the best udders of all the cow families offered in this event. That’s why we couldn’t resist matching the 20W cow with a maternally strong bull like Mr Hereford 11X which resulted in WLB Tonka 60B. Not having the oppor tunity to work with the Tonka daughter s once they make cows is one of our biggest regrets about having this dispersal. Another herd bull to come out of this family is WLB Hero RH 37S. Three of his daughters sell as lot 12, lot 45, and lot 73. Take note of their udder s and you will understand why this line’s influence was being utilized at WLB.

As I stated in the forward on the Nancy 17G cow family, not getting to work with the Tonka progeny is a big regret we have about this event. We can’t begin to say enough about his calves. You will see what we mean when you get here to look for yourself. As Tonka’s first calf crop go through their stages of development we find ourselves more and more at ease with having chosen to keep him back as a major role player in our program. His calves are showing they not only have the necessities but also come with the bells and whistles. The consistency and attractiveness of his progeny will be a great asset whether you are producing show heifers or commercial bulls. Scurred. Selling full possession and 100% semen interest. • 40 units of farm-use semen come with this lot. This semen is stored at the farm and is not expor table.

Remitall Graves Juno 204S family Juno 204S made our shor t list at the Remitall dispersal. She sold as a two-year-old and there was no doubt, when looking at the calf at her side, she would be a cow to build a herd around. We love the udder on 204S. When she is full of milk at calving her forward and rear udder attachment is the strongest we have ever seen in a Hereford cow. It is still to be admired even now at 10 years of age.

Mr Canada set his stamp and showed his style early in life and has stuck by it. His deep flank and deep stifle go well with his carriage and masculinity. You will find him standing on a big foot and stepping out with an aggressive stride. Mr Canada is more than just an attractive show off. There are two “second to none” cow families backing up this unique Canadian herd bull. Milk should be a given with his daughters and performance will be available too. His dam sells as lot 52 and is the matriarch of this exceptional cow family. His first calf crop will be here for you to see on sale day. His ser vice is also available in some of the females on offer. Selling full possession and 100% semen interest. • 60 units of Canadian farm use semen come with Mr Canada. Remitall Graves Juno 204S family Our biggest regret with Juno 204S is that we didn’t make better use of her through ET, but then seeing her full of milk every year and watching what she has done with her natural calves has truly been a sight to behold. Her sons have always been at or near the top of our bull pen. Her last son was WLB Red Rover 27A 15C, a Powerball son that topped our 2016 bull sale at $22,500 going to XTC Ranches, Eastend, SK. We feel 204S has lots of contributions left to give especially through ET. Be sure to give her, her two daughters, and her sons, Mr Canada 15B and Douglas 15D serious thought when you make up your wish list. Don’t miss the Juno 204S embryos listed on page 45 of this catalogue.

Taboo 19D Phillipa 102P family Our first attempt to buy Taboo 19D Phillipa 102P at the River Valley sale failed. We did however buy the heifer calf at her side. A Global daughter out of this female had WLB Lego 83T 90X as her first calf. Lot 62 is a full sister to Lego and has a ver y nice Mr Hereford 11X heifer calf at her side. They are indeed a feature in this sale. Another full sister to Lego and lot 62 is working at Sparks Drummond Mine Ranch in Alabama. We were able to purchase Phillipa 102P out of the Hirshe dispersal. The cows offered out of this family provide a genetic variety through their different sires but all still carry that consistent top end production that the Phillipa 102P cow family has become known for. Lots 62A and 63A will be among the top heifer calves in this sale. This is a cow family wor th grabbing ahold of.

10E Maria 128J family

Maria 128J is a result of the Nickie 7D cow that was in the second group of heifer calves to come down from Shell River Herefords. Maria 128J was very influential for her extra depth and volume. This influence continues to be passed down as this family progresses down its line.

Lot 75 is one of our oldest Global daughters. She has paid her way through her production of very marketable sons. She has a late March Tonka heifer calf at her side that comes with some bells and whistles. Her yearling daughter that sells as lot 76 is equally nice to look at.

WLB 035J Flora 164L family Flora 164L was one of those cows that could keep herself in good trim and also take excellent care of her calf. She herself was a moderate framed, big ribbed cow that produced progeny displaying ample rib, hip and stifle. Deep bold rib, full of milk and easy keeping, she’s a real tank of a cow. As her offspring grow they too express that same depth and volume. • Ultra-sounded safe to May 9 ser vice to WLB Winchester Powerball 27A.
