Welcome to Florida’s Historic Coast, home to the seaside resorts of Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States. Our destination was settled by Spanish explorers in 1565, but it is also home to many cultures – Native American, Greek, Minorcan, French and British. You’ll find this diversity influences everything from food to architecture, shopping to entertainment and, of course, the many festivals and special events enjoyed year-round by visitors and locals alike. As a vacation destination, Florida’s Historic Coast has been capturing attention world-wide. And we are known for more than our historic sites and attractions. We’re also known as a top destination for golf. Ponte Vedra is home to the PGA Tour and THE PLAYERS Championship, along with luxury resorts, award-winning spas, an abundance of shopping, and pristine natural beaches. You’ll find more than a dozen championship golf courses to choose from and have the opportunity to explore the World Golf Hall of Fame. Foodies will find themselves in paradise here. Fresh seafood, year-round farm-fresh produce, and the very best in New World cuisine are just a few of the culinary delights you’ll enjoy. The area’s distillery, winery, micro-breweries and local chocolatiers will tempt your taste buds and satisfy your thirst. Be sure to visit our beautiful beaches too. For shelling, surfing, and sandcastle building, our 42 miles of Atlantic shore are a seaside playground. So while our history is not the same old story, after a trip here we hope you will have plenty of your own stories to tell. Enjoy your stay,

istoric architecture, national monuments, unique attractions, miles of unspoiled beaches, and a vibrant culinary and cocktail scene are just a few of the reasons St. Augustine is one of the most visited destinations in the Sunshine State. Whether you’re staying for a few days or for a season, the Nation’s Oldest City has plenty to see and do – ensuring a fun-filled and memory-making trip for the entire family. To help you pack in as much as possible during your time in our beautiful city, we’ve put together a sevenday itinerary including the best of the best in where to go and what to see. DAY 1- HISTORY Grab breakfast at The Blue Hen Café in the historic Lincolnville neighborhood (we suggest the Zada Jane’s Stack) before a visit to Lightner Museum, which features a collection of antiquities from the American Gilded Age and is housed within the landmark Hotel Alcazar Building. Next, head across the street to Flagler College, a four-year liberal arts college located in the old Ponce de Leon Hotel, a luxury hotel built in 1888 by oil magnate and railroad pioneer Henry Flagler. The school is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and offers daily tours. Next, delight your taste buds with a relaxing sit down lunch at Columbia Restaurant. Order a sangria and the restaurant’s signature “1905 Salad.” There is still plenty of daylight left, so stroll down King Street and stop in at Villa Zorayda Museum. Built in 1883 and inspired by the 12-century Moorish Alhambra Palace in Spain, the museum features unique antiques and artifacts from all over the world. For a unique twist on history, check out the Colonial Quarter and the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum. Afterwards, head to the St. Augustine Coffee House for Happy Hour and enjoy special pricing on lattes, beer & wine. For dinner, try one of St. Augustine’s favorite hidden gems, Conrad’s Steakhouse. They offer steak, seafood, chicken, and the best paella this side of Spain. Paella must be ordered 24 hours in advance.
DAY 2 – THE BEACHES Today is all about sun and surf. St. Johns County is home to more than 42 miles of pristine, white sandy beaches. Café Eleven is a great spot to grab coffee and egg sandwiches to go. Try the Sunrise Sandwich

with bacon, egg, provolone, tomato, and avocado. Anastasia State Park is centrally located close to downtown and the beaches and offers 1,600 acres of rich ecosystems and abundant wildlife. It costs $8 per vehicle to get in, but is well worth the price. It’s home to one of the quietest stretches of beach in the area and has an on-site restaurant, Island Beach Shop and Grill, plus a gift shop for sunscreen, sunglasses, or other beach items you might have forgotten to pack. The park also boasts camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and birding, so plan to spend your entire day exploring one of the area’s most beautiful locales. Head back to your hotel or B&B for a quick shower and change of clothes before driving up to the Reef Restaurant, Aunt Kate’s, or Beaches at Vilano, all popular waterfront restaurants offering coastal cuisine that pairs fresh local seafood with traditional Southern and Mediterranean flavors.

Whetstone Chocolates offers daily tasting tours, and located just around the corner is the San Sebastian Winery, which also offers daily tours of their facility and an extensive tasting of their award-winning Florida wines. A short walk or easy trolley ride from downtown is the St. Augustine Distillery. This small-batch distillery housed in a

renovated ice plant from the turn-of-thecentury, handcrafts bourbon whiskey, rum, gin, and vodka. The Nation’s Oldest City is home to a handful of craft breweries including Ancient City Brewing, Bog Brewing Company, and Old Coast Ales. Stop by one or all and order a flight, or sampling, of their newest suds on tap. A great way to experience St. Augustine as a top culinary destination is by booking with City Walks Food & Wine Tours. Popular excursions include The ORIGINAL Savory Faire Food Tour, Historic Pub Crawl & Beer Experience, and the VIP ‘ALL THINGS CHOCOLATE’ Tasting Tour. By all means stop into Choco Lattes for a taste of their Mile High scratch-made cakes, pastries, and confections. DAY 4 - OUTDOORS It’s no wonder that Florida is nicknamed the Sunshine State. With plenty of cloudless days and a landscape dotted with flora, fauna, estuaries, rivers, and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, spending time outdoors is a must during any St. Augustine vacation. Visit the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve in Ponte Vedra Beach and explore interconnected habitats from the ocean to the forests. The Reserve boasts an environmental education center, beach and nature trails, and the popular Guana Dam Area. For kunch, head back south to the Conch House. Located on Salt Run, just off the Intracoastal Waterway, this outdoor eatery is a great spot for Banana Pepper Calamari, frozen drinks, and plenty of fresh catch options. Spend more time on the water by booking a tour on St. Augustine Scenic Cruise, Black Raven Pirate Ship or Schooner Freedom. These tours depart daily from the St. Augustine Municipal Marina and offer views of Fort Matanzas National Monument, the Bridge of Lions, and the Great Cross at the Mission Nombre de Dios. With waters brimming with dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, and various water birds, chances are good you’ll be able to spot one, two, or a few dozen. Next, head on over to Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park just north of downtown on
Magnolia Avenue. The grounds claim fame as the area first explored by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 and settled by Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565. Tucked in the shade of majestic oak trees, the café offers up locally sourced salads, sandwiches, burgers, and other tasty treats. Next, check into the park and make a toast from the Fountain of Youth, said to restore youth to those who drink from it. Make sure to visit with the park’s muster of nearly 30 Indian peafowl (commonly called peacocks) and visit with other wildlife on more than 15 acres of waterfront landscape. DAY 6 – ARTS & CULTURE A premier arts and culture destination, St. Augustine is home to dozens of art galleries, museums, and music venues. The St. Augustine Art Association on Marine Street has been promoting and supporting local artists since 1924. Stop in to peruse monthly, juried exhibits of works by emerging and professional artists.
Admission is ABOVE: free and the THE ALLIGATOR FARM, A Association ST. AUGUSTINE FIXTURE, IS is open ENTERTAINING FOR ALL AGES Tuesday through Sunday. Art galleries abound in downtown. DAY 7 – STAYING ACTIVE After a hearty breakfast from Zaharias at 3945 A1A South, head over to the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. Built in 1874, the Lighthouse rises 165 feet above sea level and boasts 219 steps. It’s a perfect morning workout to take in one of the best views of the city and surrounding waterways. One of the area’s newest seafood restaurants, Harvest & Reel, offers farm fresh and shore-to-table cuisine in a modern open-kitchen design and an elevated, unique dining experience.
KICKING IT WITH THE KIDS Whether you’re visiting a fountain that restores youth to those who drink from it or a historic mansion filled to the brim with oddities and rarities, the Nation’s Oldest City offers up plenty to do for the youngsters in your brood. Pirates and privateers once ruled the open seas off the coast of Florida. Visit the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum and be transported back in time over 300 years to the height of the Golden Age of Piracy. Learn how to tie a proper sailing knot and hoist a Jolly Roger flag in this fully immersive and educational museum experience. If you prefer a maritime adventure, the Black Raven Pirate Ship leaves daily from the St. Augustine Municipal Marina. Complete with pirate jokes, sea shanties, and sword training for the kids, the Black Raven offers up an exciting way to spend an hour-and-a-half on the Matanzas Bay. St. Augustine’s Schooner Freedom offers a true sailing experience for young and old alike and has been listed as one of the Top 10 attractions in St. Augustine by USA Today, They offer relaxing Day, Sunset, and Enchanting Moonlight Sails, as well as a variety of special events throughout the year. Sea Serpent Tours offers one-of-a-kind experiences for the whole family as you cruise by airboat through native foilage and fauna on our nearby St. Johns River. See native birds, wildlife and more. A real crowd pleaser. Kids get hungry quite often, so it’s always good to have a bevy of dining options in your back pocket. While enjoying the downtown attractions, head to family-friendly eateries like Mojo Old City BBQ or Florida Cracker Cafe. If you’re heading to the Beach, check out Beaches at Vilano, Beachcomber and South Beach Grille, all with kid-friendly play areas situated directly on the waterfront. Other noteworthy, kid-centric places to keep in mind include Marineland Dolphin Adventure, St. Augustine’s Zipline Canopy Tour and St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park with a history dating back to 1893. One of the most common reasons visitors cite in choosing not to experience off-shore fishing is sea-sickness, and that is a valid one. MANY LADIES ENJOY FISHING AS MUCH AS THE MEN.

Some folks have a problem with it; others don’t. Lot’s of folks claim to have a remedy, however —everything from a spoonful of pancake syrup, to an earplug in the left ear only, have been passed around as ways to combat it. The best advice is to take precautions beforehand if you think you are susceptible to motion sickness. Once it gets you, it’s got you. It’s too late at that point to avoid it, or to cure it, without going back to shore. There are many over the counter options, from Dramamine to the Transderm patch. Whatever option you choose, if this is an issue for you, do it in advance, often starting the evening before your trip. Also, keeping your eyes on the steady horizon and breathing fresh air (instead of heading inside for the cabin) will often reduce the effects. For those of us fortunate to live on, or to visit this beautiful Florida coastline, there are unlimited recreational options available for young and old alike. Don’t shortchange yourself by failing to experience one of Florida’s oldest and most exciting recreational opportunities. Get out on the water and enjoy the sport that Hemingway loved. At the least, you’ll take home a lifetime of memories. At best, you might just get hooked.

ften known for its upscale, oceanside neighborhoods and lush golf course resorts, Ponte Vedra Beach offers a bit of something for everyone, from live music and awardwinning restaurants, to some of the state’s most diverse ecosystems in the state. Come take a journey with us through this seaside community that’s located just 18 miles southeast of downtown Jacksonville and a short drive north from historic St. Augustine. The history of Ponte Vedra Beach is a bit foggy. The area
remained sparsely populated through the late 19th century until around 1914 when the National Lead Company started mining for minerals discovered in the sand. It has been said that at that time there were as many mules as people in what became known as, Mineral City. After World War I, the demand for minerals dropped and Ponte Vedra Beach became a target for real estate development. In 1929, developers ascended upon the area and started building an area similar to The Cloister in Sea Island, Georgia. It was at this time that the small beach town became known as Ponte Vedra Beach.

March 23-30, 2019 ST. AUGUSTINE RACE WEEK The First Coast Sailing Association and its associated yacht clubs are proud to bring to St. Augustine, the premiere sailing event of the spring season. It’s a four-day celebration of all types of sailing, set in one of America’s oldest seaport cities. In 2019 that great combination of competition and entertainment continues with spectator-events and entertainment the entire city can enjoy. And, as always, SARW offers challenging offshore racing for sailors arriving from up and down the Atlantic coast. There is something for EVERY BOAT. You don’t have to own an ocean-going boat to participate. Slightly smaller yachts and even trailerable boats are invited to race in the popular Inshore Series just north of the Vilano Bridge. The Offshore Series is for serious racers who like lots of traditional round-thebuoys, upwind-downwind racing. The Youth Sailing Regatta on the bay front will showcase the skills of the junior sailors from around the area. For more information go to staugustineraceweek.com

Pat Croce’s Pirate Story
P
at Croce’s name is well known in the Ancient City. Most know him as the founder of the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, as he moved his collection of pirate artifacts from Key West, to our city, in 2010. “When I was a little kid, I was obsessed with the movie Captain Blood starring Errol Flynn,” Croce reminisced. “I used to watch it with my dad...we must have seen it a hundred
times. I was captivated.” When Flynn’s jacket from the movie came up for sale at an auction, Croce purchased it, and for years that jacket rested on a coat stand in his office. The obsession with “all things pirate” continues to this day.
WHEN DID CROCE FIRST DISCOVER ST. AUGUSTINE? “It was December 2009 ...I came to town to give a talk ,at a seminar regarding
St. Augustine’s 450th anniversary,” Croce said. “I talked about pirates and I talked about history. Later, a member of the 450th Anniversary committee took me on a tour around town. I ended up buying the property (where the Pirate Museum is located) by the end of that very night. Six to eight months later, I made the move from Key West. I had spent five years there, with the Pirate Soul Museum, but it wasn’t as relevant there as it is in St. Augustine.”

Croce’s favorite thing to do in St. Augustine? Peering out over the water, beyond the bayfront... the very same spot where pirates used to enter St. Augustine. “You truly had real, authentic pirates walking the streets of this town,” Croce explains. In addition to the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, Pat Croce oversees the Colonial Quarter, a living history museum in the historic district of St. Augustine. While the University of Florida owns the property where the Colonial Quarter stands, Croce has put his own money into renovations of the site. Located at 33 St. George Street, the attraction sits behind the Pirate Museum. “We offer daily tours, unique retail shoppings, and we put on special events — it’s quite an attraction, and another asset to the city of St. Augustine,” Croce said. While teaching about 16th, 17th, and 18th century St. Augustine with hands-on exhibits, the site also includes three restaurants: the
“
Taberna de Caballo, the Bull & Crown Public House, and the newest offering, St. Augustine Seafood Company. One of the most popular outdoor music venues in downtown St. Augustine is the Colonial Oak Music Park, located on the grounds of the Colonial Quarter. This outdoor stage, nestled under giant live oak trees, plays host to concerts and other outdoor events. A wide variety of music is offered each weekend, free to the public. Two small buildings flanking the center stage offer beer, sangria, wine, craft cocktails and frozen drinks.
CROCE’S HISTORY Pat Croce still has ties to Key West. He remains the owner of the Rum Barrel Bar & Grill, Island Dogs, the Green Parrot bar, Charlie Mac’s, Turtle Kraals and the Half Shell Raw Bar.

He started his career as a pioneer in the sports medicine field, as aphysical therapist, creating Sports Physical Therapists, a company he eventually sold. In 1996 he, along with Comcast, purchased the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team and re-launched them as a legitimate NBA championship contender. He has also been an NBA commentator, and an NBC commentator for the Summer Olympics.
In addition, Croce is a New York Times best-selling author and a motivational speaker. Some of his books include Pirate Soul, Blackbeard, The Pirate Handbook and Plunder, co-authored by Adam Slutsky. He has been on the cover of Success Magazine and was chosen as Inc. Magazine’s “Entrepreneur of the Year.”
AMERICA UNEARTHED In 2014, the TV show, America Unearthed, came to St. Augustine to film an episode called “Captain Kidd’s Pirate Code.” Host Scott Wolter interviewed Croce about the museum’s rare Captain Kidd artifacts. “Most importantly, they wanted to see true, authentic artifacts. We have Kidd’s wooden treasure chest. That was the key,” Croce explained. The St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum has been featured on CNN, the Today Show, the History Channel, and Antiques Roadshow, among other national outlets. Croce is always on the hunt for more authentic pirate treasure. He looks for sunken pirate ships. He searches for rare items. He writes pirate stories. He keeps history alive. A VIEW TO REMEMBER THE CELLAR UPSTAIRS WINE & JAZZ BAR STORY AND PHOTOS BY RENEE UNSWORTH
M
ost guests want to sit outside and enjoy the view — getting a glimpse of Flagler College towers, Memorial Episcopal Church…etc. etc. The view is what makes The Cellar Upstairs truly special.
When the The Cellar Upstairs first opened, it only had outdoor space and was only open seasonally, closed from November to January. About four years ago, indoor seating was added in case of inclement weather, and the venue was opened year-round, rain or shine. “The view ... the fact that it’s on the roof, and it’s a nice place to sit and relax,” Cox confirmed. Local wine, craft beer, and stunning views of the Oldest City make guests feel like VIP when visiting The Cellar Upstairs on the San Sebastian Winery’s rooftop.
“It opened in 2002, and was part of the addition — we tripled the size of the building from 6,000 to 18,000 square feet,” explained Charles Cox, President of the winery. “I had been to several rooftop bars in other cities and after living here for about six years or so, I thought it would be great for St. Augustine — guests can see out over the San Sebastian River and enjoy the outdoors.” Guests can choose from San Sebastian’s red and white wines, the Blanc De Fleur (a sweet bubbly), sangria, port or sherry, craft
and imported beers, and a light menu of appetizers and sandwiches. Most starters serve at least two people, such as the ‘Boars Head’ Bistro Meat & Cheese Platter, Fresh Baked Brie, Baguette & Dipping
