S P I R I T TO S E R V E At Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa, our Spirit to Serve the community around us is as important as our desire to serve you, our guest. We take social responsibility seriously, from sustainable culinary philosophies to environmentally friendly lodging practices, and philanthropic financial contributions. “Working with charitable organizations, we are serving our communities through these signature issues: shelter and food, environment, readiness for hotel careers, vitality of children, and embracing diversity and people with disabilities,” says J.W. Marriott, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Marriott International, Inc. “As a good corporate citizen, Marriott is strengthening our communities throughout the world – today, and for tomorrow.” Locally, within the North Florida community, Sawgrass Marriott has worked with dozens of charities and nonprofits including Children’s Miracle Network and The DONNA Foundation. We invite you to visit Alice & Pete’s Pub where guests can test their skill at our famous Floating Hole Challenge benefitting the First Tee of North Florida. It’s just one of the many ways that we are able to give back to the community that has supported us over the years.

BEE-ING RESPONSIBLE S U S TA I N A B L E S A W G R A S S Raising bees is similar to raising children; you need love, understanding, and a whole lot of patience. A passion project started by Executive Chef Joe Natoli and his right-hand man Matt Sanchez, the resort’s official Beekeeper (yes, you read that correctly – Beekeeper), Sawgrass Marriott Resort is proud to feature a thriving garden peppered with nearly forty bee hives. This parcel of land, which is set back by the lake and largely undetected by guests, was started just a few years ago.

BY KARA POUND PHOTOS BY KATE GARDINER

“It was as dense as dense can be,” explains Sanchez of the parcel of land hacked from Sawgrass Marriott’s beautiful 42 acres. “Little by little, we started chopping away at the scrub brush until we had the groundwork for our crops and room for our hives.”

something special. “This is an iconic resort,” Chef Natoli says. “I knew that I wanted to make my mark here – to elevate the dining experience at every level. To do that, I was going to have to make some extremely bold moves. Getting this garden started was one of those moves. This is one of Marriott’s signature resorts and the food needs to reflect that.” Tucked away at the back of the hamlet is the Sawgrass Marriott’s quail pen, which Sanchez also oversees and helps maintain by hatching baby quail at his own home. The quail don’t end up on the menu, Natoli assures. They’re here for the eggs only. “You should see him with them,” says Chef Natoli. “They follow him around like he’s their dad. We call him ‘the quail whisperer.’ It’s all part of our goal of being as self-sustaining as possible.”

Situated within the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa is the award-winning Vernon’s First Coast Kitchen & Bar. This farm-totable establishment offers more than just striking views of TPC Sawgrass. From a bountiful breakfast buffet to V-Hour (a clever take on happy hour), Vernon’s is the perfect place to catch the sunset, sip on innovatively crafted cocktails, and dine on some of the best food Ponte Vedra has to offer. The restaurant’s success may be due in part to its namesake – Vernon A. Kelly. President Emeritus and one of the original developers of TPC Sawgrass, Kelly’s name has a longstanding history within the Ponte Vedra area. “I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time,” responded Kelly when asked about how his position with THE PLAYERS Championship came about. In 1978, he was working for a local developer building subdivisions in Ponte Vedra Beach. When the PGA TOUR began searching for a home course for THE PLAYERS Championship, they settled on land purchased from the same developer. The one condition? “We want Vernon to come build the golf course for us.” What originally began as a one-year project turned into a career for Vernon Kelly. The now world-famous course was completed and opened in 1981, and the Sawgrass Marriott opened three years later. “I was supposed to be with PGA TOUR for a year to build that course, but it ended up taking more than two years.” There were plenty of obstacles the team faced during construction including draining the property aptly known by locals as “the swamp” as well as a hurricane. “It ended up taking more than two years… they ultimately made me general manager of the course.” Eventually, Kelly would become President of PGA TOUR Golf Course Properties. Vernon Kelly retired from full-time employment with the PGA TOUR in 2007, but remains close by to consult when needed. Today, he lives on a 95-acre horse ranch where his wife of 45 years rescues horses, miniature horses, and miniature burrows. Kelly visits Sawgrass Marriott often, and was surprised to learn that the in-house restaurant bore his name. “It was quite an honor,” he affirmed. Vernon’s First Coast Kitchen & Bar is open for V-Hour from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Sunday Brunch; 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday through Friday and 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday for breakfast; and from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday for dinner. The dinner menu features both land and sea options including Diver Sea Scallops, Double Bone Pork Chop, and House Aged New York Strip. Kelly’s cuisine of choice? “I’m a big steak eater, so that’s my favorite thing on the menu.” Take it from Vernon himself and give one of the land options a try. You won’t be disappointed.

H I STO RY O N THE MOVE T H E P L AY E R S CHAMPIONSHIP

The rich history of THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach just keeps getting richer. That history — which began in 1977 with THE PLAYERS inaugural event at the Sawgrass Country Club — changed dramatically when Dean Beman, Commissioner of the PGA TOUR at the time, decided that the event needed to be contested on a course that would not favor any particular player, or style of play, and also needed to provide a greater spectator viewing experience. Beman focused his efforts on finding a site for this innovative new design and, in 1980, finally settled on a 415-acre site just across the street from Sawgrass Country Club. The heavily-wooded, wetland area was purchased for the whopping sum of $1 from local developers. Beman would spend the next couple of years mastering his plan, selecting Pete Dye as the course architect to bring it to life. People still talk about how the inhospitable patch of land was completely transformed by bulldozers, backhoes, and heavy equipment of all kinds. Earth was dug out, moved, and piled high so that special, grass-covered hills, some up to 30 feet in height, could be made to enhance spectator viewing for THE PLAYERS guests. Fans responded by coming out in droves to the new venue. Since the switch to the TPC Sawgrass in 1982, Beman’s brainchild and Dye’s creation is among the biggest golf stages in the world for one week out of the year. Perhaps Jerry Pate knew something big was about to happen that year when he dove into the TPC Sawgrass lake BY MICHAEL CURET PHOTOS BY ADDISON FITZGERALD & COURTESY OF THE PGA TOUR

beside the 18th green after winning the first PLAYERS championship at the Stadium Course. With no pun intended, it was a “watershed” moment for the PGA TOUR, especially when he pulled Beman and Dye

53

into the water with him. Two days prior to Pate’s victory, he told Dye of his plans, saying, “I’m going to make you famous,” Pate recalls. “I wasn’t trying to beat the field. I was trying to beat Pete Dye, and I think I got him.” THE PLAYERS, which features what is arguably the strongest field in golf each year, has not disappointed since. The participants look forward to this event every year, and there is never a lack of excitement produced by the intense competition over the event’s 72 holes. Earlier this year, 2015 Masters champion Jordan Spieth asserted, “There is no added thing that any other tournament brings that this tournament (THE PLAYERS) doesn’t have. Therefore, guys like Rickie [Fowler], who catches some slack for not having won a major yet, essentially has won what’s harder to win than a major — THE PLAYERS.” Much of the drama plays out on the signature parthree 17th hole with its iconic island green — one of the most photographed and famous golf holes in

the world. Coming down the stretch, the relatively short, par-three (137 yards from the Professional tee box — generally a pitching wedge for most touring pros) has sealed the fate of many at THE PLAYERS. Just ask Sergio Garcia. In 2013, the Spaniard was tied for the lead with Tiger Woods, coming into 17 on Sunday when he put his tee shot in the water. His third from the drop area suffered the same fate. He would card a quadruple bogey for his efforts and ultimately end up tied for eighth, while Tiger held on the win his second PLAYERS title. Players have Pete Dye’s wife, Alice, to thank for this challenging test of golfing accuracy. Following a site visit, she suggested creating an island green when she saw that an excavation for a pond became a much bigger project than had been anticipated. The end result was a beautiful golf hole and a potential influencer between victory and defeat for

hole, which was made into a drivable par-four, along with a return to Bermuda grass greens. Additionally, hazards were created on No. six and seven, the practice facility was treated to a much-needed upgrade, incuding several improvements to facilities for tournament guests. In 2017, PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan announced that the tournament date of THE PLAYERS would move from early May, when it had been played since 2007, back to March, its original playing month. The 2020 event is now slated for March 12th - 15th. “THE PLAYERS Championship has grown in stature since we moved it to May in 2007 and, regardless of the date, is clearly one of the premier events in all of golf, with the best players in the world, a premier venue in THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, an unmatched fan experience and a significant charitable component that

55

SawGrass2020_SAFE.indd 55

benefits the Jacksonville-area community,” Monahan said. “Moving to March in 2019 enhanced an already strong Florida portion of our calendar and play a significant role in an overall improved schedule.” Jared Rice, THE PLAYERS Executive Director, saw THE PLAYERS soar to even greater heights with the new dates. “Its position on the new PGA TOUR schedule sets the stage for an incredible season,” Rice said. “As the flagship event for the PGA TOUR, THE PLAYERS takes pride in being part of a FedExCup season designed to deliver compelling golf to fans around the world from start to finish.”

Then there was the rise from obscurity in 2002 when little-known Craig Perks of New Zealand had a magical run on three of the toughest finishing holes in golf to win. He chipped in for eagle at 16, sunk a long birdie putt at 17, and chipped in for par at the 18th. The win granted him security with a five-year exemption on the PGA TOUR, and earned him his largest PGA TOUR paycheck of $1,080,000. Looking on that year was defending champion Tiger Woods, who called Perks’ late run to the title “unbelievable.”

THERE’S MORE… GET OUT AND EXPLORE Often known for its upscale, oceanside neighborhoods and lush golf course resorts, Ponte Vedra Beach offers a bit of something for everyone from live music and awardwinning restaurants to some of the state’s most diverse ecosystems. Come take a journey with us through this seaside community that’s located just 18 miles southeast of downtown Jacksonville and a short drive north from historic St. Augustine. The history of Ponte Vedra Beach is a bit hazy. The area remained sparsely populated through the late 19th century until around 1914 when the National Lead Company started mining for minerals in the sand. It’s been said that at the time there were as many mules as people in what became known as Mineral City. After World War I, the demand for minerals dropped and Ponte Vedra Beach became a target for real estate development. In 1929, developers descended upon the area and started building

an area similar to The Cloister

in Sea Island, Georgia.

It was at this time that the

small beach town

became known as Ponte Vedra

Beach. Today, Ponte Vedra Beach is considered one of the most luxurious and sophisticated travel destinations in the country — offering more than 150 holes of golf and miles upon miles of white, sandy beaches. Easily one of the most popular and recognizable events to be hosted in this coastal community is THE PLAYERS Championship. Held each spring since 1974, THE PLAYERS Championship tees off at the THE PLAYERS STADIUM Course, which is just a stone’s throw from the resort. The event, which is one of the PGA Tour’s signature events, brings an annual average of 200,000 spectators annually.

Check out the World Golf Hall of Fame and Museum just minutes off I-95 in St. Augustine. Open year-round except for Thanksgiving and Christmas, the museum is only a small part of the World Golf Village experience. Award-winning championship courses include the King & Bear and the Slammer & Squire, as well as a plethora of on-site activities such as the IMAX Theater and dining at the famous Caddyshack Restaurant, opened by Bill Murray and his five brothers. If golf isn’t your thing, then head over to the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall on A1A. A multi-purpose performing arts venue set in a renovated church, PVCH (as it’s known by the locals) offers up local theatre and nationally touring acts including stand up comedians, classical pianists, indie bands, and everything in between. Just south of downtown St. Augustine, another popular performing arts venue rests in bucolic Anastasia State Park. The awardwinning, state-of-the-art St. Augustine Amphitheatre is a 4,100-seat venue that welcomes huge names in the music industry such as James Taylor, Bob Dylan and Alabama Shakes, as well as family-friendly theatre and even small-scale circuses. Chances are, no matter what time of the year you’re visiting, Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and St. Augustine Amphitheatre will have

ST. AUGUSTINE-THE NATION’S OLDEST CITY As the saying goes, “24 miles of beaches and the rest is history.” Just a few miles south of Ponte Vedra, the “Nation’s Oldest City”, St. Augustine, exudes a playful charm created by a contradiction of old and new world Influences. Mixed together they create a refreshing mixture of antiquated romance, youthful vibrance, and Southern sweetness. Evidence of the magic and mystery of St. Augustine is revealed in more than 60 historic sites and attractions. Many of these points of interest are tucked along canopied roads of moss-draped oaks. Streets are lined by signature coquina cottages topped with red clay roofs. Two National Monuments reflect the prevalent Spanish and Minorcan heritage: The impenetrable Castillo de San Marcos (1695), the nation’s oldest masonry fortress, and Fort Matanzas (1742), which can be reached only by boat. Since 1903, visitors have discovered St. Augustine’s past at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. Thought to be Ponce de Leon’s eternal spring, it is Florida’s oldest attraction. The Mission of Nombre de Dios (1565) is the location that started Christianity in the United States. Visitors can also see the remains of the 1808 City Gate that leads to the heart of the historic district. There are 45 spirited year-round celebrations of heritage and heroism in St. Augustine. Reenactments range from the 18th century royal transfer of office to Drake’s Raid in 1586. Another popular event is the reenactment of the 1740’s torchlit Spanish Night Watch. St. Augustine and the surrounding areas have an amazingly varied and rich fine arts environment. Working in every medium imaginable, art lovers can check out the work of more than 230 artists in galleries and shops around the city. The antiques scene is no less sparkling. St. Augustine alone has more than 50 antiques dealers displaying their one-of-a-kind treasures.

NEW “SPIRITS” IN THE OLDEST CITY

ST. AUGUSTINE DISTILLERY

When you hear the words distillery or bourbon, your mind

will likely travel to the foothills of Kentucky, where 95 percent of the world’s bourbon is made, and it’s been that way since the late 1700s. Fast-forward hundreds of years. A band of St. Augustine, Florida locals, with a passion for craft spirits and distilling, established what would become one of the most popular attractions in Northeast Florida. Their goal wasn’t just to create highly sought-after spirits. They wanted to form a space that would allow for distilling, while giving the world a glimpse into the intricate spirit-creating operation. St. Augustine Distillery would embody a desire for tradition with a modern, Florida twist.

The building was purchased and restored, and is now a fully operational distillery more than a century after its original establishment. Since its inception, the St. Augustine Distillery has grown to employ more than 40 part, and full-time staff, including two full-time bottlers and five full-time production specialists, who make the coveted spirits. It continues to challenge tradition as a one-of-a-kind facility, producing Florida’s first-ever bourbon. It has become the most popular distillery tour in the United States with a 5.0 rating on Trip Advisor. Unique cocktails have been invented using their various styles of vodka, rum, gin, and – of course – bourbon. “We want to help people create delicious, easy-to-make cocktails with our home mixology program, ‘The Taste of St. Augustine,’” said Philip McDaniel, CEO and co-founder of St. Augustine Distillery. McDaniel strives to instill in people that craft cocktails aren’t just for ordering at an expensive bar. Using WRITTEN BY BY KARA POUND PHOTOS BY KATE GARDINER

so timing really is everything. The Distillery’s bourbon lineup now includes several unique creations. The first was the Double Cask, which is no longer available. Florida Straight, an 88-proof spirit that McDaniel considers to be the “new foundation of whiskey,” eventually replaced the Double Cask. The Port Finished Bourbon is created through collaboration with the San Sebastian Winery in which port wine barrels are utilized to create a malted bourbon with a smooth and semi-sweet finish. The Saint comes with a price tag of $200 and is the first-ever old fashioned-finished bourbon, and the four-year-aged Birthday Bourbon rounds out the list. Aside from the Double Cask, all bourbons can be found at the Distillery’s gift shop. Outside of creating some of the most sought-after spirits in the state, the St. Augustine Distillery also strives to be a good neighbor and an even better steward of the Ancient City. The establishment brought a new light to an otherwise dwindling part of town known as Lincolnville. This historic district was established by freed men and women following the Civil War, and now contains hundreds of historic buildings. With the Distillery’s large and popular presence, an interest in the Lincolnville area has increased, and trendy restaurants and businesses are taking advantage of the classic charm the

area offers. The Distillery has also worked closely with Habitat for Humanity of St. Augustine, having donated thousands of dollars and hundreds of volunteer hours to build the area’s 138th home. The Sing Out Loud Festival, a multi-day music festival that occurs every September, also enjoys the Distillery as its presenting sponsor. Community involvement also includes several retail partnerships with vendors like Kookaburra, Hyppo, and three local chocolatiers. In recent years, the St. Augustine Distillery has become one of the most popular event venues in St. Augustine. From weddings to baby showers, the Distillery has created a trendy vibe that attracts celebrations from all over the country. Whether you’re visiting St. Augustine for a few days or enjoying a stay-cation, St. Augustine Distillery is a mustsee for Florida natives and visitors alike. Distillery fans can also enjoy its products at several partner bars including the adjacent Ice Plant Bar, Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa, Colonial Oak properties, The St. Augustine Amphitheatre, Sunset Grille, A1A Ale Works, and more. The St. Augustine Distillery promises an experience unlike any other and invites you drop in, have a sip, and relish in the historic yet trendy charm that continues to draw in natives and travelers alike.

Most bottom species have limited seasons and all have daily bag limits, so if you’re new to the sport, a charter trip with one of our local captains pays dividends in knowing what to target and how to go about it effectively and legally. Prices for an offshore bottom fishing trip on a local charter boat can range from $60 per person on larger, “head boat” or “party boat” types of vessels, which cater to large groups of fishermen, up to a range of $700-$2,500 per trip on a smaller, more private boat like the J-Hook, Jodie Lynn or Salt Run Fishing Charters, which typically accommodate 5 to 8 anglers comfortably, providing a more intimate experience. Local Captains, Bill Hoge and Darryl Lloyd, advise that weekends are usually more crowded and during the week the larger boats typically have lesser crowds. Prices will vary depending upon the duration of the trip—half day or full day—but the fun you’ll have and the memories you’ll bring home on any given day will be worth every penny. The fresh fish fillets are a nice added bonus. Trolling is another type of “Deep Sea” fishing we enjoy here off our Historic First Coast. Like bottom fishing, trolling targets a variety of different species in different conditions, near shore and offshore, but unlike bottom fishing, the trolling angler targets open ocean, migratory, “pelagic” species of fish, by pulling lures and baits (to mimic swimming bait) behind the boat. According to Captain Hadjis, his most popular target-fish when trolling include mahi-mahi (also known as dolphin or dorado), wahoo, sailfish and tuna. You can even hook into a big marlin off our coast, particularly in late spring. Pelagics pass through the area seasonally and are targeted accordingly. Again, the experience and knowledge of a local captain or guide is instrumental in learning the basics. Prices on trolling trips vary like bottom fishing trips, but when split

72

among several members of a group, the price per person decreases accordingly and in most cases the fun increases with multiple members of the fishing party hauling in catches at the same time. For the most up to date information on rates and scheduling and what is biting at the moment, check out the websites of the local fishing fleet for details. One of the most common reasons visitors cite in choosing not to experience off-shore fishing is seasickness, and that is a valid one. Some folks have a problem with it; others don’t.

avoid it, or to cure it, without going back to shore. There are many over the counter options, from Dramamine to the Transderm patch. Whatever option you choose, if this is an issue for you, do it in advance, often starting the evening before your trip. Also, keeping your eyes on the steady horizon and breathing fresh air (instead of heading inside for the cabin) will often reduce the effects. For those of us fortunate to live on, or to visit this beautiful Florida coastline, there are unlimited recreational options available for young and old alike. Don’t shortchange yourself by failing to experience one of Florida’s oldest and most exciting recreational opportunities. Get out on the water and enjoy the sport that Hemingway loved. At the least, you’ll take home a lifetime of memories. At best, you might just get hooked.
