ello, and welcome to our second annual “Local Business” special edition. Our

cover this month beckons you not only to open the magazine but also to check out all that the featured local businesses, from St. Augustine and across St. Johns County, have to offer. Customers are part of a positive feedback loop…We pay for food, experiences and stuff. > We enjoy these things. > Businesses stay in business and thrive as a result. > Businesses hire more employees. > We employees use our earnings to buy more food, experiences, and stuff. While this is an extremely simplified explanation of the importance of patronizing our local retailers and providers, it gives a general idea of the noteworthiness of doing so. We have a lot of hard-working folks here. Based on information from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s “Summary of Employment,

Owning the café has exposed the couple to a variety of musicians they otherwise wouldn’t have known about. Musicians like Steve Poltz, who Chad says, “has the best stage presence of anyone I have ever seen.” Seth Glier is another of their favorites. Along with their 15-year-old daughter, Caley, the family enjoys being outside and visiting the beach when they’re not at the restaurant. Running is a big part of Carol’s life. She says it gives her time “to sort out the crazy week or day I’ve had.” In addition to dancing over 40 hours a week and attending virtual school, Caley joins her parents, working at the café on the weekends. Giving back to the local dance community, Café Eleven recently hosted a takeover, where a local non-profit, The Perla Ballet School, received all of the tips earned and 20% of sales in one evening. If you’ve ever driven by 11th Street in February, you’ve likely seen the “LOVE window” at Café Eleven. Guests leave notes, cards, and art on the front of the building. It’s donation-based and brings awareness to local organizations like SAFE and Hugs Across the County. Café Eleven is located at 501 A1A Beach Boulevard in St. Augustine Beach. They’re open daily from 7 AM until 9 PM, with happy hour from 3 PM – 7 PM every day. Go to originalcafe11.com to see menus and music schedules.

ncompassing the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology, OB-GYN Associates of St. Augustine has grown by leaps and bounds since Dr. Susan

Yarian founded the practice in 2001. What started as an office with one doctor and one midwife has since grown to encompass four locations and a diverse staff of highly qualified professionals, specializing in all facets of women’s health. From menstruation and childbirth to menopause and a myriad of other biological functions that the female body experiences, OB-GYN Associates of St. Augustine has helped more than 10,000 patients over the years. “I had been working for another practice for six years until I felt that my kids were old enough for me to start my own,” Dr. Yarian explains.

“It started with just five of us: me, [nurse-practitioner] Barbara Dembek, and three employees. It was a crazy year, and I was on call for most of it.” Shortly thereafter, Dr. Eric Pulsfus joined the team, followed by Dr. Kelly Jago, Dr. Laila Needham, Dr. Thomas Searle, and Dr. Karen Toppi, along with midwives Elizabeth Arnett, Amy Loughlin, Elizabeth Meadows, Michele Rogero, and Sue Chappuis. “Over the past six or seven years, the practice has just exploded,” says Dr. Yarian. “We now have plenty of oncall coverage and have opened additional locations in Palm Coast, Palatka, and World Golf Village. Our main office at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine was always part of my vision to offer comprehensive care to our patients.” In the early days, OB-GYN

Today, the practice specializes in everything from high-risk obstetrics, laparoscopic procedures, urinary incontinence, menopausal medicine, and primary infertility to general gynecology and birth services. “I never meant for the practice to get so big,” Dr. Yarian admits. “It just happened. But, it’s also become my reason to get up in the morning. We always make sure to take care of our staff and treat each patient as if they are family.”

The Searle family has been in St. Augustine for nine years and, as Lorraine says, “We really needed something like this in our community.” Her ultimate goal is to provide a haven for moms, dads, and grandparents alike to share their experiences, learn, and grow together. With an ever-expanding team, Well Women 360 offers experiences from spa treatments (with on-site daycare provided) to educational talks. Each Tuesday, a speaker joins the Well Women community to provide information on topics ranging from CPR to breastfeeding. These talks are designed for women in their childbearing years, transitioning from a life of their own into parenthood. Since opening in January 2018, Well Women 360 has become much more than just a community center for young mothers. Lorraine has collaborated with local vendors with a shared vision. Upon entering Well Women 360, customers will see a product display for Pink Stork, an all-natural supplements supplier, owned by locals Amy and Thomas Upchurch. For the past 15 years, Eclipse Recording Company has recorded and produced a Christmas-themed collection of tunes with both musicians and studio staff donating their time. The album is then sold locally, with proceeds going toward financial assistance to families and the elderly. “Helping folks in need and giving them a lift when they need it the most is the greatest gift you can give,” says Stafford. “We all have needed that in our

The Amphitheatre gives us all of the support and encouragement we need, but none of this would be possible without the sponsorship from FOSAA. They make so much happen for our community, and their dedication to creating opportunities for children to experience the arts is absolutely amazing.”

than little boys. In the shop on San Marco Avenue, you’ll find some 14,000 different diecasts of models, including cars, trucks, airplanes, and military vehicles. outhern Horticulture is the kind of place where customers sometimes come just to walk around and soak up the peace

and serenity. The family-owned business on Anastasia Island includes both a landscaping business, for residential and commercial properties, and a retail gardening center. Owned by Bill Hamilton, Bryanne Hamilton, and Jean Dowdy, the business got its start back in 1979 when Bill graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in plant science. Bill’s father joined he and his brother to begin the landscaping business. In 1993, they opened the retail gardening operation. Bill states that the most valuable part of the business is its employees. This is the rare business where employees are called FROM LEFT, BRYANNE

Inspired by the smaller St. Johns County neighborhood O’Shea and his family lived in, he wanted to create an intimately scaled neighborhood in St. Johns County that would provide an alternative to the larger “mega-communities” dominating the residential landscape. From this vision, Markland was born. “The scale and design of Markland have undoubtedly been influenced by my personal experiences,” says O’Shea. “My family has had the wonderful opportunity to live in a community of 350 homes for most of our lives. At this size, a community is large enough to support a robust amenity program, yet not so large that you feel disconnected from your neighbors. When the opportunity to create Markland presented itself, we wanted to give other families this idyllic experience that we have been so truly fortunate to enjoy.” In order to create the small, personal environment O’Shea desired, he reduced the home count from over 800 to just 355. The smaller home count allows residents to enjoy more amenities that are much like those found in a larger community. The neighborhood also provides plenty of special places for residents to gather, meet, and enjoy the company of family and friends. O’Shea’s team and Markland’s premiere homebuilders are working hard to add details to the homes and streetscapes’ architectural character to emphasize the “neighborhood” feel. O’Shea and his team hope to recreate the small, close-knit communities in which they were raised. Thanks to O’Shea, Construction Manager Kim Shine, Project Manager Kevin Jund, and Marketing Specialist Carla Luigs, Markland has become another community that invites more people to become neighbors. To find out how to join the community, visit Markland.com.

ST. AUGUSTINE REALTY

n St. Augustine, there is history around every corner. Undoubtedly, the city’s historic charm is oftentimes a deciding factor for those wanting to buy property

here. St. Augustine native and fourthgeneration real estate broker Roy Barnes knows real estate in the Old City perhaps better than anyone. He has owned St. Augustine Realty, specializing in both residential and commercial real estate, since 1989. While Barnes has deep family roots in St. Augustine’s real estate scene, those roots did not start with the current firm. “My great-grandfather opened Eugene L. Barnes and Son Real Estate and Insurance Firm in 1895. My grandfather, Otis E. Barnes, succeeded him, and my father, Roy Barnes, Sr.,

As the owner of Lanni Construction and High Tide Roofing, Bill’s mission is to build quality homes that will protect the families that live in them. “We are building houses here for a one-time event that we hope doesn’t happen, but we need to build the house that will sustain that event. Of course, I’m talking hurricanes. I take that responsibility very seriously: to protect that family.” Almost unbelievably, not a single house built by Lanni Construction leaked, flooded, or sustained any wind damage in Hurricanes Matthew or Irma. Before moving to St. Augustine in 1991, the Florida native lived in Naples, where he learned the construction business alongside his father. Bill

development by family patriarch Dr. William Carr. “Most of our dad’s research was conducted at The Whitney Laboratory,” says Michael. His father’s tireless efforts resulted in an alternative to natural bait that releases a scent replicating natural fish chemicals. Unlike other artificial baits, Fishbites does not release its feeding stimulants until after it is submerged. “We like to say that it’s the scent that melts in the water, not in your hands,” says Carr. After starting in a four-hundred-square-foot plant, off Old Dixie Highway, the company has grown exponentially over the years.
