Architect Count Benedikt Bolza established his own Architecture and Design Studio at Reschio in 1999.
With his fledging studio came great responsibility: the transformation of abandoned farmhouses came under his jurisdiction, so too their gardens and the entire landscape of the 1,500-hectare estate.
His collection of furniture and lighting came about through necessity. Not finding the specific item he visualised for a Reschio interior, he designed it and his local craftsmen made it. Every item in the B.B. for Reschio range was created for a specific space within Reschio.
Benedikt Bolza’s Architectural and Design Studio within Reschio’sTabaccaia is recognised for its creative vision and technical expertise.
His team has remodelled the crumbling castle into a superlative hotel, abandoned farmsteads into elegant houses complete with stylish interiors and sweeping gardens, and landscapes within natural contours. Using salvaged materials, employing local artisans, cultivating indigenous plants and always considering the next generation.
Benedikt has transformed more than half of the fifty houses at Reschio. Unlike most architects who rarely visit their creations, he sees them daily. “I live with all the projects we have done every day. It gives real insight into clients’ use of the designs. It is a privilege to design and work in the same environment, particularly living in the houses and within the natural world of Reschio. I have come to understand the idiosyncrasies and how they can be used in our favour,” he said.
The B.B. for Reschio range of furniture, lighting and accessories has evolved over almost 25 years. It began with a standard lamp that Benedikt had visualised. Unable to source anything similar, he designed it.
His local blacksmith made it and his wife, Donna Nencia, hand coloured the faux vellum. The Poggibonsi Standard Lamp was born.
Materials sourced in Italy are worked, with exquisite skill, by Benedikt’s carpenters, blacksmiths and upholsterers in the immediate vicinity of Reschio.
Every piece is made to order and takes up to 12 weeks to produce. Some items, such as beds, can be made to different specifications and measurements.

The Small Standing Mirror
A custom designed and made brass free standing mirror
B.B. - Hotel mirrors do not suit all travellers. I was determined to make one acceptable to all. It can be tilted up and down, hand held or stood on a table. It is a very adaptable and practical piece, either on its own or within the dressing table
B.B. - The double decker solid brass platforms sit on individual heavy-duty ball bearings encased deep inside the central brass trunk support. The platforms turn smoothly and individually in both directions and can hold heavy objects. This piece is one of my favouritesI love the glorified Lazy Susan
B.B. - At first I wanted to align all the slotted screws until I realised that there is beauty in chaos. A simple design made sophisticated by the addition of brass
B.B. - I designed this lower grate for a barn that we transformed at Reschio. The front is faced in brass, while the rest of the grate remains a solid steel piece, creating almost a basket, a feeding trough. It is a nod to the barn’s previous agricultural use

The Kitchen Fire Grate

B.B. - When we lived in the castle and my children were babies in cots clustered near the kitchen fire for warmth, I designed a tall grate so that we could pile the wood in with no danger of burning logs rolling out
B.B. - Positioned around a drive or on a terrace they give such an exciting and inviting light. Particularly good in winter and not so massive as to make them a terrible chore.
B.B. - After I finished Spinaltermine, we had an open fire alongside the outside dining table and it made perfect sense to adapt the fire grate to incorporate a BBQ cooking grill
