Annual Report 2019-2020
HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Castilleja Community, Many of you remember that each year at Castilleja, we explore a guiding theme to frame our social and emotional learning as we reflect on who we are and who we hope to become—both as individuals and as a community. This year’s theme is Justice, and it requires us to ask challenging questions and set goals that will make a difference. This year has brought a global pandemic and a national reckoning over centuries of institutional racism. On the local level, here in California, the effects of climate change are more evident than ever. As we face these issues, justice sits at the center of all of them. It also brings into focus our mission to educate compassionate women leaders to effect meaningful and sustainable change in the world. As you read through these pages, you will recognize the dedication and creativity that our employees have brought to distance learning. It wasn’t easy, but they made it look like it was. Meanwhile, they kept curiosity and connections at the center of the student experience. You will also be able to read about the foundations of our new Teaching and Learning Antiracism program. We realize that for far too long, our community has not made space for racially diverse perspectives, and we are committing energy and resources to listening, reflecting, and making overdue changes. There will be opportunities throughout this year for everyone in our community—students, employees, families, and alums—to join in this ongoing conversation. Finally, you will surely gain an appreciation for the unwavering generosity of our community. Through these uncertain times, Castilleja’s donors were steadfast, helping us to support families who were facing new financial challenges and allowing us to commit to protecting the jobs of all of our employees. All of these initiatives, which allow Castilleja to become a stronger community and a better school, would not be possible without your gifts. Thank you from all of us at Castilleja. With gratitude,
Nanci Z. KauffmanHA Castilleja Head of School
Anjali Pichai P’21 and Sarah Sands P’16, P’19, and P’24
FROM THE BOARD
Dear Castilleja Families and Friends, On behalf of the Castilleja Board of Trustees, we want to thank you for your continuing support of the mission of the school through your generous gifts. It is our privilege to present the Annual Report, which reflects the spirit, strength, and accomplishments of the school for the past year. World and local events have impacted all of us in different ways and have also highlighted how important it is for the school to continue to educate the next generation of women leaders. As parents, we were impressed with how quickly Castilleja pivoted to distance learning and touched to see the faculty’s dedication. We all had so much to balance as we adjusted to the pressures of the pandemic, and despite everything, Castilleja employees delivered their very best work in support of the students. Each day of distance learning, we find the presence of the Castilleja teachers’ faces and voices in our homes to be a steadying touchstone. Overhearing bits of classroom conversations over Zoom has given us so much to feel grateful for while we are apart. Your generosity allows Castilleja to continue to deliver an exceptional academic experience for the students throughout this unpredictable time. We are fortunate to be a part of a remarkable community that rallies together to care for each other—teachers, staff, students, and families. We had an outpouring of support, and as the spring unfolded, an uplifting story took shape. Even though we had to cancel View360 this past spring, we met our financial goal in support of tuition assistance within days. It was an amazing show of generosity as Tuition Assistance took on a new definition for our school, addressing new expenses that ranged from technologies that create equitable distance learning environments for all our students to grocery cards to help with added pressures caused by the pandemic. Throughout these past months, the deep commitment we have seen from the Castilleja community has left us more inspired than ever to work together to support the next generation of women leaders and activists. Thank you again for your generous support. Warmly,

LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT
Cindy Goldberg P’17
Ken Hirsch P’17, P’19, P’26
Parents Turned Visionary and Strategic Partners Cindy Goldberg and Ken Hirsch met in 2011 at a dinner at Lockey House when their oldest daughters, now college seniors, were in middle school. No one knew at the time that they would soon forge a partnership to help shape the next century of women leading and women learning at Castilleja. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Cindy and Ken both joined the board as Nanci KauffmanHA was shaping her ambitious goals as the new Head of School. “It was clear that this was an important moment in the history of the school,” Ken explained, “and I knew that serving on the board was an opportunity to give back to this place that was having such a positive impact in so many young girls’ lives.” Cindy agreed, “I understood that the way for my daughter was paved by people before me, and I wanted to be part of carrying that opportunity forward for other girls.” Then she added, “I also knew in my heart that I wanted to support Castilleja’s mission because it was the right thing to do. We need to level the playing field and give girls this phenomenal start.” Within three years, they both doubled down on that initial commitment as Ken was appointed Board Chair and Cindy was appointed as Vice Chair. “Initially, I was worried about the time commitment as I thought about becoming the Chair,” Ken admitted and quickly added, “When I explained that to a close friend, he told me,
’Everything that really matters takes time.’ It was some of the best advice I’ve ever been given because this really matters.” Ken and Cindy have been both visionary and strategic partners for some of Castilleja’s highest priorities. When we think about leadership giving, Ken Hirsch and Becky Long stand out as supporters of the Tuition Assistance program through establishing an endowment. Then when we think about program investments, for instance in our new opportunities for students in Computer Science, we think about Cindy and Evan Goldberg. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIRS While many leaders at Castilleja cycle into their roles for a time and then step away, Cindy and Ken have devoted themselves for the long haul. With 16 years of Board service between them, they are now co-chairing the Capital Campaign to modernize the campus to create 21st century learning spaces and have quietly raised over $42M in the past three years. “The program,” Ken said, pausing for a moment to find the right words, “What can you say? The program is outstanding in every way. The students are supported, challenged, engaged, and inspired. Now, we need to modernize the campus to match the level of the instruction.” Cindy agreed, “Who knows where it could go when these teachers and these students get the reimagined spaces they need? The sky’s the limit.” Annual Report 2019 - 2020 | 3

DISTANCE LEARNING
Going the Distance On Wednesday, March 4th, Castilleja leadership sent out an email to families, letting them know that the students would be learning from home the next Monday, working on assignments their teachers had given them in advance. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Division Heads and the Academic Technology department kicked into high gear as they planned for an impromptu professional development day to prepare the faculty for a possible shift to distance learning in case of a campus closure due to COVID-19. That Monday, the faculty became the students in the truest sense. Castilleja’s core Leadership Competencies—initiative, agility, and purpose—were not just skills we were reinforcing for students, they were strengths our teachers were calling upon to prevail through challenging times. “I was in awe that day,” Dr. Jamie SullivanHA, Castilleja’s Director of Academic Technology, remembered. “The entire faculty was

in the dining room with laptops open, taking notes, asking questions, sharing ideas. They were completely committed. The work, energy, and love they brought to the task, I’ve never seen anything like it.” We all look back at that day now with a different perspective, as we do for so many events from early 2020. At that point, the hope was that if campus needed to close, it would reopen a matter of weeks later, certainly before the end of the school year. Soon enough, we realized that timeline was not safe. Then throughout the summer, we hoped infection rates would permit us to reopen with the start of the new academic year, which also didn’t come to pass. Since that Monday in March, we have had to adjust our mindsets and expectations again and again. But one aspect that has remained steady throughout is our faculty’s commitment to delivering an outstanding
distance learning experience. If anything, the attention and care they give to the process has grown. Over the summer, while plans for the fall remained uncertain, generous giving to the Annual Fund allowed every faculty member to receive a professional development grant to explore new technologies, develop creative ways for students to collaborate, and research solutions to questions they had never faced before. Dr. Sullivan and Terry Young, Castilleja’s Director of Technology, trained teachers on everything from Padlet, to Jamboard to Zoom, to Microsoft Meet, to Thinglink and Pear Deck. At the same time, they gathered input from teachers to prepare for hybrid learning, trying to identify strategies for when some students are on campus while others are home. For everyone who worked in the Technology Department, it was a summer of nearly constant problem solving and preparing for every contingency.
The Show Must Go On The Upper School Play, She Kills Monsters, produced and presented live on Zoom.
As of the date that we are sending this report to press, we are making preparations to gradually reopen campus at the end of October, but in the meantime, there is nothing “virtual” about distance learning at Castilleja. It’s the real thing. Our students will stretch and grow in countless ways throughout this year, and our teachers are so excited about the possibilities. Learning and leading this year at Castilleja is both completely different and exactly the same.
Tannis Hanson, Visual and Performing Arts teacher, had been rehearsing She Kills Monsters for just over a month when school closed in March. During the closure, she saw the performance date inching closer and closer. “I began to wonder about an experiment, about whether we could push the bounds of creativity.” That is exactly what happened. Working from their own homes, the performers worked with virtual backgrounds, creative props, and switches in point of view to find a different, unexpected, and powerful way for their characters to tell the story.
PINCH PERFECT Hands-on ceramics class taught over Zoom by Helen ShanksHA
This year, the guidelines around gathering may make it impossible to mount shows in the Chapel Theater. But the music, theater, and dance faculty are already turning this around. Ms. Hanson explains, “During this time, we need to reframe the way we think about creating theatre, and instead of thinking about what we can’t do, we are thinking about everything we can do. We need to think about where we can take this challenge. It’s a great exercise for all involved, students and faculty.” Annual Report 2019 - 2020 | 5
CURRICULUM
TEACHING AND LEARNING ANTIRACISM Mary Lockey opened Castilleja School to achieve equity in education, offering young women a once-rare opportunity to prepare for college. Since then, Castilleja’s mission has evolved, now seeking to educate young women to become confident thinkers and compassionate leaders. Our Diversity & Inclusion Statement further defines our values, asking each member of the community to commit to learning from diverse voices and experiences and aspiring to engage our differences with courage, honesty, intellectual curiosity and respect. In recent months, as Black LIves Matter protests swept through our city, our state, our nation, and the globe, we began to look inward at Castilleja, asking ourselves whether we were truly fulfilling our mission and living our values. This process was both sobering and galvanizing because we realized that we were falling short, and we understood that we needed to make meaningful and sustainable change. This summer, while we worked hard to redefine what leading and learning would look like in the era of COVID-19, we also deepened our commitment to becoming a more just and equitable community by creating a thoughtful framework for Teaching and Learning Antiracism at Castilleja.

Building from the Leadership Competencies already embedded in our curriculum, we defined five Antiracism Competencies: Valuing Competing Narratives Understanding Positionality Moving Beyond Essentialism Sitting With Dissonance Committing to Rewire Our shared work to address systemic and institutionalized racism will rely on students and employees honing these skills to inspire needed change throughout all aspects of campus life. At Castilleja, curriculum has always been more than the content covered in the classroom. What we teach, the pedagogy of how we teach, the experiences we create for our students, and the skills they acquire along the way combine to form the Castilleja program. Understanding that authentic growth requires hard work, this year and every year, the Castilleja community has committed to this work because there is no other choice among true leaders.
LEADING WITH AN ANTIRACIST PURPOSE Committing to Rewire Habituating knowledge into new practice, or changing habits to align with learning.
Valuing Competing Narratives Valuing multiplicty of life stories, perspectives, and experiences.

This thinking presumes that people can be categorized into intrinsic and enduringly different groups. Sitting with Dissonance Valuing discomfort and ambiguity (including with regard to oneself—not applying essentialism to one’s self-concept). Annual Report 2019 - 2020 | 7
ENGINEERING
Steep in STEM CASTILLEJA ENGINEERING SPARKS GROWING IMAGINATION AND INTEREST Bryan Valek taught Engineering 1 for the first time in the fall of 2013, and sixteen students enrolled. It was a good start for the course, which was designed as an introduction for people who are curious about everyday technology and design, including simple machines, motors, and circuits, Since then, the number of students signing up for Engineering 1 has grown to 25 enrolled in two sections this fall.
Studies have long shown that graduates of all-girls schools pursue STEM in college in greater numbers. At Castilleja, in the heart of Silicon Valley with innovation all around us, we are seeing that college isn’t soon enough. “In naming the course Engineering 1,” Mr. Valek explained, “we were putting it out there that we wanted to create Engineering 2 someday.” That day arrived last January, when Julian Cortella taught the first section of that second installment, which explored more advanced skills—including 3-D computer-aided design, microcontrollers, and analog and digital circuit design—and important topics like artificial intelligence, self-driving cars, and control systems. They also took on bigger questions that are especially relevant to Castilleja students who are considering careers in engineering. Why are there so few women in the field? Where do they perceive a bias toward profit? And how can they work within that system to bring about social good?
Engineering 2 was meant to be very hands on and collaborative, and those goals were impacted by the campus closure due to COVID-19. However, Mr. Cortella made some adjustments that will stick around even after students begin in-person learning again. “Casti was very supportive and bought programmable robot sets for every student, allowing us to continue the work on control systems that was originally designed as a collaborative activity with shared equipment. I will definitely work with those again because we used them to learn pretty sophisticated control theory and moved beyond my original expectations.” Throughout the campus closure, the Castilleja faculty members have been reflecting on habits of mind they hope to nurture in their students to keep them excited and curious. In a Zoom class recently, Mr. Valek seemed to be outlining one of these habits as he introduced a new piece of software, warning, “This is going to take some trial and error. You’re going to get it wrong, and then you’re going to get it wrong again, and it’s going to be pretty frustrating. But if you stick to it, you will learn a useful tool that will help you build some really cool things.” The desire to build some really cool things, no doubt, is part of what has inspired the steep rise in Castilleja students who are signing up for engineering classes and the robotics team; and perseverance is what can keep them engaged over the long haul. In the fall of 2021–22, Castilleja will offer its first ever Advanced Topics in Engineering class. This takes the program even further than the initial vision of Engineering 1 and Engineering 2. That can happen when you build really cool things at Castilleja, the final results can quickly outstrip your imagination. 2020 - 2021

ATHLETICS
Game Time One afternoon in September, six months after campus had closed suddenly in March, a few groups of excited students returned to campus for the first time. THE ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT, carefully following state and county guidelines, was able to welcome small cohorts of student-athletes from the cross-country, water polo, and volleyball teams back for in-person practices. Spieker Field, the Circle, and Okawa Pool have always been central to the learning and leading that happens at Castilleja, but now more than ever we appreciate their significance to our community. As outdoor spaces, they became the first places where we could come together again safely. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, Castilleja athletes from each team arrive through different entrances and are met by different members of the Athletics Department, who are truly thrilled to see them again. Yes, there are forms to hand in, temperatures to check, marks on the ground to remind people where to stand, and masks worn, but underneath those masks there are smiles so big that they eclipse the harder parts of any given day. “You just can’t imagine how happy everyone is to be there,” Mary Jo Pruitt, Castilleja’s Athletics Director explains. “Our student-athletes are craving this time together doing the sport that they love with their teammates. You can see how much this return to a sense of normalcy means to them. It’s a game changer.” GAME CHANGER. Ms. Pruitt has found the perfect phrase for athletics this fall, because the game has changed—races and games are not taking place yet. The competitive season for the fall has been pushed ahead until December. All three seasons will compete but in tighter windows of time through the winter into the spring and early summer. Until then, though, the Athletics Department is helping athletes develop physical and mental strength by returning to campus three days a week for inperson training, doing yoga and mindfulness training the other two days a week. They also offer a lecture series that covers topics from nutrition to leadership to what it means to be a good teammate when everyone comes to Castilleja with different backgrounds and life experiences.
“When I walked through the carved doors for the first time in months, I remember seeing my teammates’ faces and instantly lighting up with joy. The strong bond between teammates has always been my favorite part of sports, and I feel lucky to be able to continue to strengthen friendships during in-person practices.”
Watching student-athletes arrive and pass smoothly through the screening stations, everything looks seamless, but months of creative problem-solving and revisions went into this effort. “We submitted our first proposal back in June, which was followed by continued adjustments throughout the summer until we finally got approval at the end of August because giving up was not an option,” Ms. Pruitt says, “It was worth every minute. I can see that our student-athletes aren’t taking anything for granted. They are working hard every minute. I believe they truly appreciate how lucky we are to have the Circle, Spieker Field and Okawa Pool to return to, and I know they are going to be even stronger mentally and physically when the competitive season begins. The Castilleja Gators will be ready—ready for anything that comes their way!”

Farewell... TO THE BRAVE AND RESILIENT CLASS OF 2020 Last year, 60 seniors were admitted to 123 colleges and universities and enrolled at 36 across the U.S. and abroad, listed below. These seniors faced many unknowns as they made their decisions, including enrolling at schools they had not yet visited in person. Due to the unusual circumstances this fall, 20 students opted to take a gap year. We are proud of the courage and resilience all of the members of the Class of 2020 showed throughout this process. WAYS TO GIVE
Drawing Lines Kelly Conway ’90 names Castilleja in her estate plan in order to give back to the Tuition Assistance program she credits for providing the educational experience that shaped her life. Kelly Conway ’90 always felt grateful for the opportunity to learn at Castilleja, and she knows this would not have been possible without tuition assistance, “My parents both highly valued education, but going to Castilleja would have been out of reach for me without tuition assistance. I don’t think that cost should prevent qualified and capable girls from benefiting from the same opportunity I had.” She left college and law school with loans, so she was not able to begin giving back right away, but she has never forgotten about the impact that Castilleja had on who she has become. She recently named Castilleja in her estate with specific support to Tuition Assistance. At Castilleja, supporting students’ needs reaches beyond tuition to include other expenses, such as books, uniforms, technology, and school trips. Because of this holistic approach, Kelly received a grant from Castilleja to join Peggy McKeeHA’s trip to the Soviet Union. “I can draw a direct line from that trip forward through my life,” Kelly explained. “In college, I double majored in Diplomacy and World Affairs and History, with a focus on Russia. Studying the collapse of the Soviet Union was central to my senior thesis, and that work inspired me to go on to law school.” Now, she sees giving back to Castilleja as an opportunity to become an agent for change. “Look around. We need strong women leaders now more than ever. Education is an irreplaceable gift. It can never be taken away, and it benefits more than just the student who receives the gift; it benefits society as a whole.” When asked whether she had any advice for current students, she said, “Don’t just sit back and trust that things will be okay. Be an active participant in a better future.” Kelly is doing just that; her gifts to Castilleja will contribute to a better future for students who otherwise might not have access to this unique education.

“I don’t think that cost should prevent qualified and capable girls from benefiting from the same opportunity I had.” — Kelly Conway ’90
Meeting Changing Needs Over a century ago, Castilleja was founded on ideals of equity in education as Mary Lockey worked to create opportunities for young women to prepare to succeed in college. A century later, Castilleja’s commitment to equity in education has grown to include a robust Tuition Assistance program that assures students with different financial needs all have access to this transformational education. This year, in the face of COVID-19, our definitions of equity shifted again as the pandemic created new hardships for families, and our campus closure required new strategies to support our students in the distance learning setting. Our students practice initiative, agility, and purpose as core leadership skills, and throughout this spring Castilleja’s leaders applied those skills while working to meet the changing needs of our community.

Benefiting Tuition Assistance Since it began 13 years ago, View360 has always been a thought-provoking and inspiring symposium that brings our community together in support of Castilleja’s tuition assistance program. This annual fundraising effort makes it possible for all qualified students to attend, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. View360 has raised over $11M, comprising almost 30% of our annual tuition assistance budget. This year’s community event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions on large gatherings. Nevertheless, our resilient community overcame this challenge and raised over $1.1 M to meet our tuition assistance goals.

Special Recognition of Adrienne (Hiscox) Mitchell ’44
Courage & Curiosity Adrienne (Hiscox) Mitchell ’44
Adrienne (Hiscox) Mitchell ’44 passed away peacefully on August 12, 2020, after a lifetime of leading and learning. After graduating from Castilleja, she pursued a degree in the sciences and worked as a chemist, a path very few women took in her day. Later in life, she rose the ranks of the American Association of University Women and the Children’s Health Home Auxiliary. Adrienne’s dear friend Gloria Casey explained, “Adrienne was very reserved and somewhat understated, but she was the kind of leader who inspired you to have confidence in her. You just knew that any job she undertook would be done well.” She was also a tireless student both inside and outside the classroom, taking courses throughout her life in everything from neurology to religion to art history, and traveling to Iran, China, Albania, and Russia years before most Americans felt ready to explore these regions. Adrienne led a life inspired by courage and curiosity, and she left a significant portion of her estate to Castilleja. Her legacy will continue in the modernized learning spaces of our new campus.

SENIOR GIFT
THE CLASS OF 2020 Wearing traditional red dresses, the senior class celebrates their unshakable bond at the Fabulous Daughter Dinner Dance in October 2019.
Rising to the Challenge
THE CLASS OF 2020 LEAVES A MEANINGFUL LEGACY OF GENEROSITY AND LEADERSHIP Senior class gifts are usually decided upon after a process of research, discussion, and reflection. After all, it can take time for a group of roughly 60 people to select what they want their legacy at Castilleja to be. However, this was not the case for the Class of 2020. As their senior spring took unexpected turns with our campus closure, how they wanted to make an impact became crystal clear. Thus, the Class of 2020 COVID-19 Relief Fund took shape to support members of the Castilleja community who were impacted by the pandemic. The Senior Gift Committee members, Paulina Arguello, Athena Burrs-President, Alexa Crowder, Olivia French, Tevah Gevelber, Pari Goel, Riley Guggenhime, Kristen Kuhn, and Naomi Poe led this process, acknowledging that each and every member of their class had benefited from the gifts of past donors to enjoy speakers, Global Trips, and campus spaces like the Bourn Lab and the Fitness and Athletic Center. As in the past, several alums, including Kimberley Morris Rosen ’98 and Courtney Carter Charney ’97 offered challenge gifts to inspire giving. The Class of 2020 reached 100% participation, raising over $3,100 to support community members who are facing new challenges as a result of the pandemic. The funds are being used to cover everything 40 | Castilleja School
from grocery cards, to school supplies, to tuition assistance. Giving is something that Castilleja students are often asked to do in different ways, from the give-and-take that is involved in collaborative work, to the giving of themselves in the classroom, on the field, or on the stage. It is especially inspiring that throughout the many challenges our senior class faced last spring, they wanted their legacy to be one that would help alleviate some measure of the challenges faced by others in the Castilleja community. This is a truly meaningful legacy of generosity and leadership. In hopes of inspiring the Class of 2020 to begin a personal practice of annual giving to Castilleja, an anonymous alumna donor issued an additional challenge to the seniors. For every student who donated $20.20 to the gift fund, this donor would match those gifts and add an additional $20,200 in honor of the class. The seniors, in true Castilleja style through and through, rose to that challenge with enthusiasm. We are grateful for the generosity and inspiration of our donor. It is her dream to make an annual tradition of graduates inspiring seniors to give back to their alma mater. Is there another alum or group of alums out there who would like to continue this tradition by offering this challenge to the Class of 2021?

A FOUNDATION OF GIVING
Decade Club The Decade Club was founded in July 2012 to recognize members of the Castilleja community who have demonstrated a lasting commitment to the school by making gifts for 10 to 19 consecutive years.
