CASTILLEJA FACULTY MEMBERS ENJOY SOME OF THE PRIVILEGES MOST USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH COLLEGE-LEVEL TEACHING. Sabbaticals A unique feature of teaching at Castilleja is its generous sabbatical program. The program offers a semester-long sabbatical with full pay and full benefits to faculty after a minimum of seven years of employment. Teachers are free to pursue research, travel, further education, and other enrichment opportunities. The sabbatical program is emblematic of the school’s commitment to maintaining a vital and engaged faculty. Professional Development Castilleja offers faculty members a wide range of professional development opportunities. Teachers may attend national and regional conferences during the course of the year and may also apply for individual or collaborative grants. Students Small class sizes and scheduled time for individual conferences foster a collegial atmosphere between students and faculty, in which mutual trust and respect are the norm. Teachers are encouraged to become involved in student life as advisors to a small group of students, club sponsors, or as a grade-level dean, among other opportunities. Signature Programs • ACE Center (Awareness, Compassion, Engagement): The ACE Center empowers girls and women to learn, to lead, and to effect positive change in the community both locally and globally. • Bourn Idea Lab: The Bourn Idea Lab is a key component of Castilleja’s larger vision for the 21st century. Castilleja believes that deep learning entails active, handson pursuits, and our curriculum unites engineering, mathematics, physics, design, psychology, materials science, and other disciplines in a rich framework. • Global Program: Castilleja’s Global Program got its formal start in 2004 with the first Global Week, evolved to include the endowed Global Investigator Trip in 2008, and continues to expand by deepening partnerships with schools and organizations around the world.
“The students I teach at Castilleja are motivated, inquisitive, and diligent. They value dialog and encourage each other to express their unique viewpoints, and are genuinely appreciative of the faculty and staff.” - Dave Lowell Mathematics Department and Senior Class Dean • Joined Castilleja in 2000
“The professional growth opportunities here are simply unmatched. Faculty have had the chance to travel to China, India, Central America, Europe and Africa, and the administration has remained financially supportive of myriad opportunities that enhance our work in the classroom.” - Jeannine Marston History Department • Joined Castilleja in 1977

Located in Palo Alto, CA, Castilleja is at the heart of Silicon Valley, and has a rich history of innovative partnerships with industry. Palo Alto is just 35 miles south of San Francisco, arguably one of the world’s most beautiful and vibrant cities. We are a short drive from the Pacific to the west, and the Sierra mountains are just a few hours to the east. We enjoy northern California’s mild-year-round climate. Our community is comprised of 448 students, 135 faculty and staff, and more than 4000 alumnae and alumnae parents around the globe.
Faculty are generally required to be on campus mid-August through mid-June, and are paid over 12 months. Faculty contracts also include four long breaks during the school year and several additional paid holidays. Additional benefits include access to Castilleja’s state-of-the-art fitness center and our on-site food service program — which focuses on organic and locallysourced gourmet meals — both at no cost to employees.
