Annual Report 2020–2021

HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Castilleja Community, We opened this year with our community together around the Circle once again! We welcomed new students, new faculty, new leaders—and even those who were new last year. It was a Tie Ceremony like no other, with many grades running, many ties being tied, and many feet pounding with anticipation as we gathered in the Chapel Theater. For a community like Castilleja, so rich with traditions, being together again has been both joyful and steadying, even as we recognize that many elements of daily life have changed. One thing that has remained the same is that we have a guiding theme again this year to frame our social and emotional learning. These themes usually rise from the moment and address the questions we find ourselves exploring inside and outside the classroom. Two years ago, our theme was Belonging, and we thought about how we, as individuals and as a community, could help everyone feel that they belong. Last year, through distance, hybrid, and in-person learning, we explored Justice in countless ways, often thinking about how compassionate leaders can effect change to bend the arc of justice. I think you will agree that this year’s theme—Dignity—is a natural extension of the work we have done over the past two years. As we become a community that nurtures a sense of belonging and we work toward creating a more just world, we realize the importance of honoring the inherent dignity in everyone we encounter, everywhere we go, every single day. This acknowledgement changes our lives on every level; we don’t just greet each other differently while crossing the Circle, we see each other differently. In addition, we are more able to be our true selves within our school community when we tend to and preserve our own dignity. In these pages, I hope you will come to appreciate how these three recent themes have aligned to shape and inform daily life around the Circle and our hopes for the future of Castilleja. As donors, you support us both by enriching our current programs and by investing in our plans for the next generation of women leaders. Thank you from all of us at Castilleja. Warmly,

Belonging

CASTILLEJA LEADERSHIP VOLUNTEERS AND LEADERSHIP TEAM Annual Report 2020 – 2021 | 1

WELCOME TO CASTILLEJA

Leaders in Agility Castilleja welcomes new Leadership Team members Dr. Nadia Johnson, Laura Zappas, and Anne Rubin

Agility calls for perspective, which we gain by learning from others and listening to new stories. These tales teach us how to take risks and dream big. “Independent schools must embody the values we are teaching,” Dr. Johnson stated matterof-factly at a faculty meeting late this summer. New leaders Dr. Johnson, Assistant Head for Curriculum and Community, Ms. Zappas, Head of Middle School, and Ms. Rubin, Head of Upper School, all model Castilleja’s leadership competencies in different ways. All three of them moved across the country this summer to come to Castilleja, definitely demonstrating agility from the very moment they set foot on campus. As Dr. Johnson, Ms. Zappas, and Ms. Rubin reflected on agility, each one of them remembered a person who had faith in their capacity to take risks by pursuing paths they might not have considered on their own. This highlights another important element of the Castilleja experience, relationships. The connections that Castilleja students feel to their teachers is a critical step toward developing initiative, agility, and purpose—and becoming compassionate leaders.

TAKING A ROAD UNKNOWN

Nadia Johnson Assistant Head for Curriculum and Community “Being agile helps you understand what really matters. It helps you develop strong mental health. It helps you consider: what do I do next and how can I adapt?” After college, Dr. Johnson faced some of these questions as she made choices about her career and her happiness. Soon after starting a job in banking, Dr. Johnson realized that this path was not meant for her, so she asked herself, “what’s the next best scenario?” When encountering obstacles, Dr. Johnson follows a three-step process: stop, regroup, and pivot. It is this very process that eventually led her to Castilleja. Deciding it was time to pursue her passion, Dr. Johnson left the banking job and enrolled in a PhD program for cultural studies. She then began her career in education. However, growing up, Dr. Johnson never imagined she would end up working in schools. Her goal was to become a lawyer. But sometimes opportunities arise that require us to deviate from our plans and exercise agility. Along the way, we may even uncover hidden talents that bring us strength and happiness. Dr. Johnson exemplifies the courage required to stray from a prescribed path and the delight that emerges from taking a new road.

CELEBRATING CONNECTIONS

BUILDING CONFIDENCE

Laura Zappas

Anne Rubin

Head of Middle School

Head of Upper School

“By moving here, I wanted to model to my children

“Agility is an accumulation of hard conversations and

how to step outside our comfort zone, so they could

difficult experiences and how you react to them.”

see that there are many ways to live a life.” An English teacher at heart, Laura Zappas knows the power of a great story. Her own story includes a chapter about her grandfather, a main character who modeled risk-taking and agility. He set off on his own as a teenager traveling by horse from Iowa to Wyoming to build his homestead, always learning new things, much like Ms. Zappas. While Ms. Zappas’ mode of transport differed— travelling from Ohio to California by car and with her family of seven (husband, three kids, and three pets), — her grandfather’s adventurous spirit certainly infused their journey. Imparting lessons to our children takes time, but we know that sometimes, the best lessons are taught by example. Ms. Zappas understands the relationship between trying new things, developing confidence, and becoming a changemaker. This very concept is embedded into Ms. Zappas’ philosophy about educating Middle School girls. She aims to build upon and deepen an interdisciplinary curriculum that engages students in identifying and celebrating those connections. As a former teacher, department chair, dean, and now Head of Middle School, Ms. Zappas herself models agility by embracing new roles and challenges. In turn, the students, and her children, will begin to tell themselves, “I can do it, too.”

To Anne Rubin, agility means balancing two opposing concepts at once. For example, balancing positionality and belonging is a paradox. We must understand our positionality—recognizing our identifiers—but also feel a sense of belonging in all situations. The flexibility this demands is difficult, and our reaction measures our adaptability. So how does one improve? We must continue to find ways to know ourselves. Growing up with parents from two different countries and cultures, Ms. Rubin constantly evaluated her own positionality and belonging; agility is embedded into who she is. Perhaps this is what contributed to her steadfast confidence. Understanding that confidence is built, Ms. Rubin is purposeful about creating experiences that give students room to grow and flourish. While these experiences may be challenging, they also provide a safe forum to have hard conversations and unravel reactions. Ultimately, she understands that the conversations that make for an agile student often depend on the strength of the relationship with the guiding adult.

Farewell... TO THE AGILE AND BRAVE CLASS OF 2021 Last year, 64 seniors were admitted to 125 colleges and universities and enrolled at 33 across the United States, listed below. These seniors navigated an unusual process—adapting to online learning, researching colleges virtually, taking the SAT and ACT outside on the Circle, and committing to attend colleges they’d never even seen. They are ready for whatever the world brings them; in fact, ten percent of the class is taking a gap year. We can’t wait to witness the incredible good that the Class of 2021 will bring to their communities as they embark upon their next adventures. Amherst College

Welcome... TO THE INSPIRATIONAL AND IMAGINATIVE CLASS OF 2028 These 59 girls said yes to Castilleja after going through an entirely virtual admissions process (at the age of 10–11!). We are in awe of their resilience, creativity, courage, and flexibility, which will undoubtedly grow during their years around the Circle. In their class, 11 languages are spoken at home, and there are 52 different first names! We are so excited they have joined the Castilleja family. FROM THEIR ADMISSION APPLICATIONS:

I dream of... ...having a whole week to make whatever art I want (without having to clean up!). ...starting my own dance company and teaching girls they can dance and code. ...becoming a professional soccer player, dog breeder, architect, and best mom ever! ...meeting and holding a sloth in real life. ...being a scientist because I like to figure out how things work. ...someday, everyone will live in harmony. ...studying law and working in the government or public service. A Gift with Purpose

Artwork by Thea Dai ’24

AN ANONYMOUS ALUMNA DONATION FOCUSES ON DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND JUSTICE

“A sense of purpose to effect change in the world” is a phrase from Castilleja’s mission statement that can be hard to bring into focus. Purpose doesn’t always come easy. It can take time, and often a significant amount of struggle to identify and define. And since the start of the pandemic, even the community members who had found their sense of purpose have been beginning to rethink the ways they wanted to make a difference in the world around them. In response to the enduring impacts of systemic racism that were made more clear by COVID-19, one alumna, who wants to remain anonymous, was moved to make a difference by giving $1 million to Castilleja to seed Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice initiatives (DEIJ) on campus. While we know that access to an outstanding education is something that every child deserves, we also realize that true access to an education isn’t just about where you go to school. It’s also about feeling like you belong. It’s also about seeing yourself reflected in the community. It’s about gaining confidence in the knowledge and skills you bring into the classroom conversations. It’s about finding a clear path toward new opportunities.

6 | Castilleja School

This gift will begin to address all of these elements by focusing on three key initiatives: 1 TEACHING FELLOWSHIP A portion of the funds will be dedicated to creating a fellowship program that serves to increase representation of people of color in the field of education both as teaching faculty and as leaders. 2 EQUITABLE ACCESS TO ACADEMIC RESOURCES We want to assure that all students have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive at Castilleja, regardless of economic needs or status. 3 PARTNERSHIPS WITH OUR COMMUNITY We will seek intentional relationships to develop a broader scope for student recruitment and increase representation in STEM for graduates. With the first gift in the school’s history that is dedicated entirely to DEIJ efforts, the donor hopes this is just the beginning. She sees that by giving to Castilleja, she can support the process of creating compassionate and inclusive leaders whose sense of purpose will be guided, just as our recent students have been, by themes like belonging, justice, and dignity.

Transformative Giving CELEBRATING WOMEN LEADERS IN CASTILLEJA’S HEAD’S CIRCLE In September, our Head’s Circle gathering honored donors who give annually at a transformative level. Their support of all programs at Castilleja fundamentally changes the student experience. This year, three women leaders within our own community spoke about the role education and mentorship have played in their own lives while they reflected on why supporting Castilleja’s mission is important to them. Lori Goler P’21 ’25, Head of People at Facebook, shared that her own experience at a girls’ school similar to Castilleja helped her understand her full potential from an early age, which is why she sought out Castilleja for her own daughters when she moved to the Bay Area. From her foundation in a girls’ school setting, she understood the value of gaining confidence in her own ability to learn new skills and the importance of supportive relationships, especially with other strong women, throughout her life. One of those relationships began in high school at a summer program when Lori met Aileen Lee P’24, another member of our community who spoke that night. Aileen—the founder of venture capital firm Cowboy Ventures and All Raise, an organization that accelerates the success of female founders and funders—went to a coeducational public high school and remembered being impressed by Lori’s confidence. In her own life, she also recognizes the importance of having a teacher who really believes in you. Her grandfather arrived as an immigrant and did not speak English, but one teacher took him aside and helped him after school, which changed his life, allowing him to offer new opportunities for his children. As time passed, this opened more opportunities for Aileen, highlighting that the connections students make with faculty stretch far beyond the time they spend together in the classroom. Despite busy schedules, both Lori and Aileen have served on the Board at Castilleja, and they were joined at the Head’s Circle event by current Board Chair, Mary Speiser P’20 ’22, who through her work on the strategic planning process, the Master Plan, and the Capital Campaign, is helping to prepare the school for the next 200 years. Mary shared that one experience she had in high school, a youth ambassador trip to the Soviet Union, forever changed the trajectory of her life, leading her to study Russian and ultimately become an intelligence analyst for the CIA. Throughout her time on the Board, Mary has always worked to keep the mission at the center of all conversations about the present and the future of Castilleja, understanding that the world needs women leaders with ambition, imagination, and courage now more than ever.

VISIONARY LEADERSHIP

Innovative Donors, Lasting Impacts We honor the visionary leadership of Bill Kind P’09 and Castilleja’s in-house educational researcher Karen Strobel, whose contributions enable Castilleja to measure the hallmarks of experiential learning and teaching in real-time.

Finding the Best Route Forward Bill Kind P’09, former Castilleja trustee and visionary donor for the Partnership for 21st Century Assessment Every Castilleja student’s experience is unique; it’s amazing how many different paths can be forged while walking around the same circle for a few formative years. Even so, all graduates share and continue to appreciate Castilleja’s Core Competencies— initiative, agility, and purpose—throughout their lives no matter where they go or what they choose to do after they graduate. These competencies have always been central to the work of educating girls to become compassionate leaders and effect change in the world. However, identifying a common language and tools for tracking how these competencies evolve to meet the challenges our students face today required an investment of time and resources. It also required vision, which as a member of the earliest wave of high-tech leaders in Silicon Valley and the Board of Trustees at Castilleja, Bill Kind P’09 could provide. When the school approached Kind in 2013 about attaining a matching grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation to support sharing best practices in 21st Century Assessment, he immediately understood the importance of the request. Kind, who is also an avid rock climber, likens innovating to climbing. “You need to be aware and alert at all times. That way you can make changes and adjustments to find the best route forward.” Similarly, Castilleja’s innovative teachers needed to be able to measure their impacts to continue to make adjustments to be able to do their best work with students. 8 | Castilleja School

INNOVATIVE INVESTMENTS Thus Bill and his wife, Jaynie Kind, became leadership donors for a new Innovation Investment Fund (IIF). Along with other donors, they provided the matching donations that allowed Castilleja to receive funding from the grant to establish the Partnership for 21st Century Assessment, which sought to find new ways for teachers to measure the hallmarks of experiential learning, such as curiosity, collaboration, global awareness, and problem-solving in their classrooms. There are always important turning points in the history of a school as old as Castilleja, and this moment is one—it gave Castilleja the capacity to be creative and responsive in real time, a luxury so few schools enjoy if they always need to wait until summer to reflect and adjust.

Discovering our Core Competencies Karen Strobel, Castilleja’s Director of Institutional Research In 2013, Karen Strobel, who had been an educational researcher at the Graduate School of Education at Stanford, became the Director of the Partnership for 21st Century Assessment at Castilleja. At the outset she worked with faculty to identify, define, and name Castilleja’s Core Competencies. Dr. Strobel explains, “I listened to the teachers describe the skills students were building in their classes. In the process of sharing back their words with the full faculty, a pattern became very clear: their words clustered around concepts like curiosity and self-directed learning (initiative), flexible problem solving (agility) and interpersonal skills such as empathy and collaboration (purpose).” LEARNING AND LEADING Since then, her title has evolved, and she has become Castilleja’s Director of Institutional Research. She has worked with faculty and administrators to reflect on questions they want to pursue and evidence they need to inform their decisions in the classroom or for the institution. Meanwhile, her work defining the core of the Castilleja program, has also guided the school

through developing more specific Learning and Leading Competencies and newly-defined Antiracism Competencies. Having an in-house educational researcher assures that as we innovate, we remain true to our mission. Dean of Faculty Christina GwinHA explains, “She helps teachers translate big ideas into pedagogy and works with teachers to make sense of data to inform and improve their teaching.”

Partners in Innovation FORGING PATHS Castilleja students are lucky that Bill Kind and Karen Strobel both share strength in one particular core competency—agility—as they zero in on a question to understand it fully, then quickly back away to see it in context. Within our program, we encourage students to develop agility by engaging “in creative problem-solving both independently and collaboratively.” Over the past decade, Bill and Jaynie Kind’s support of the Innovation Investment Fund was both a vote of confidence in the mission and a form of collaboration with Castilleja’s educators. It is also part of the reason our program is agile enough to accommodate all of those countless paths around the Circle.

The Pursuit of Justice “Justice is a story that is never fully completed.” — MARIANO-FLORENTINO CUÉLLAR, — JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF CALIFORNIA

The first virtual View360 began with a video of students answering the question, “What does Justice mean to you?” “Empathy. Inclusion. Fairness. Action and solution-oriented. Rights for all. Work together” are just some of the words Castilleja students shared. This year, our community gathered on couches or around the dinner table to hear inspiring speakers reflect on the meaning of Justice, the school’s 2020–2021 theme. Typically, View360 is an annual event that brings the Castilleja community together in support of the Tuition Assistance program. Over the last 14 years, View360 has raised more than $11M, helping ensure that finances never impede a student from accessing a Castilleja education. View360 speakers Mariano-Florentino “Tino” Cuéllar, Justice of the Supreme Court of California, and Kimberlé Crenshaw, Executive Director of the African American Policy Forum and originator of the term “Intersectionality,” are scholars whose thought leadership has deeply impacted the pursuit of justice. Both shared how their origin story propelled them to pursue careers that would enable them to help others lead better and more just lives. More than 250 viewers joined the livestream, helping raise over $1.2M for tuition assistance this year.

Alecia DeCoudreaux, President Emerita, Mills College, interviews Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, Justice of the Supreme Court of California

ON IMPROVING JUSTICE:

“It takes effort, ambition. It takes being hungry for more justice. It especially takes the ability to build bridges with people who don’t agree with you on everything.” — MARIANO-FLORENTINO CUÉLLAR

“It’s a really simple metaphor: if we’re all protected against racism and if we’re all protected against sexism, then we have to be protected against it in all of its forms, including its intersecting forms.” — KIMBERLÉ CRENSHAW

Malika Saada Saar, Global Head of Human Rights, YouTube, interviews Kimberlé Crenshaw, Executive Director of the African American Policy Forum

SENIOR GIFT

MAKING A DIFFERENCE The Class of 2021

A Legacy of Justice COMMUNITY GIVING In recent years, during the spring of their last semester at Castilleja, seniors form a gift committee to determine what their legacy at the school will be. A group of passionate social justice advocates, the Class of 2021 wanted to focus their gift on something that would most impact students. The events that transpired in the summer of 2020 deeply affected the Class of 2021 and galvanized them into action, leading them to dedicate their gift to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) initiatives.

CONNECTING ACROSS GENERATIONS Castilleja students and alumnae are drawn to make a difference. Maybe it’s intrinsic, and maybe it’s learned. For Viola Meehan ’82, it’s both. A boarder from Hong Kong, Viola was grateful for her teachers who made Castilleja feel like home, and for creating an environment where she felt she belonged. Reflecting on the deep impact of her teachers—like Mrs. Sheehan, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Hsu, and Madame AndreopoulosHA—Viola realized, “Maybe I can make a difference for someone else, too.”

The Senior Gift Committee members, Lishan Carroll, Alana Stull, Mariel Gunadi, Sela Dingpontsawa, Aramis Mendoza, Diana Viveros, Georgia Wluka, and Saayili Budhiraja, felt it was important that their class’ gift build upon programs important to them. Lishan shared, “Castilleja has been our second home for the last 7 or 4 years and our teachers have given us so much. But we wanted to leave campus with something that we didn’t have when we got here.”

Viola spoke to the Class of 2021 Gift Committee about the importance of giving back, and her generous gift to the school inspired the Class of 2021 to also invest in Castilleja’s future. Effecting change does not always equate to financial giving; sometimes, modeling what we wish to see is crucial too. Castilleja alums understand the impact of demonstrating leadership. After their conversation, Lishan expressed, “Viola helped us understand the purpose of giving back early.”

Over the last several years, an increasing number of both students and employees have attended the Student Diversity and Leadership Conference (SDLC). For many, participating in this conference has been life changing, and the new ideas students bring back for diversity and antiracism initiatives have benefitted the entire school community. Knowing the far-reaching impact of these conferences, the senior class wanted their gift to support similar initiatives and opportunities.

38 | Castilleja School

It’s a full circle moment when each graduating class begins to reflect on the ways in which they’ve benefited from the gifts of past donors, and thereby express their own gratitude by giving back. In addition to leaving behind a legacy of social justice advocacy, the Class of 2021 has also become part of a legacy of Castilleja graduates who are making a difference in their communities.

A FOUNDATION OF GIVING

Decade Club The Decade Club was founded in July 2012 to recognize members of the Castilleja community who have demonstrated a lasting commitment to the school by making gifts for 10 to 19 consecutive years. Their annual gifts provide the critical foundation for the excellence in academics, programs, and teaching that is the hallmark of a Castilleja education.

Margarita Espinosa Society The Margarita Espinosa Society was founded in October 2010 to honor members of the Castilleja community who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to the school by making gifts for 20 or more consecutive years. The consistent support of these donors has enabled Castilleja to remain at the forefront of women’s education, and their generosity and continued support of the school is deeply appreciated.
